PIER 39, San Francisco's premier Bay attraction, is a festive shopping mecca, featuring 110 specialty shops and 12 full-service restaurants. Shop for a wide variety of treasures, including jewelry, clothing and the perfect souvenir. Sample some of San Francisco's famed seafood, California cuisine and casual fare, while enjoying spectacular views of the bay. The picturesque scenery captures Alcatraz, the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Fisherman's Wharf and the city skyline; now showcasing Tulipmania. PIER 39 is home to the Aquarium of the Bay where you can view what lies beneath the waves of the San Francisco Bay among the 20,000 marine animals featured. Or visit the popular sea lions that have affectionately become known as "sea-lebrities." Other attractions at PIER 39 include unique street performers, a beautiful carousel, the Riptide Arcade, the Turbo Ride and much more.

Pier 39 is a great tourist spot

by Caligal K. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,383

This is the ultimate tourist trap & must do when in San Franisco. There are plenty of eateries, shops & views of the ocean. The sea lions on the dock are the best part.

Tourist Attraction!

by Christine W. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,531

Pier 39 is the ultimate tourist attraction. The pier has two levels filled with both cheap and expensive restaurants, including Bubba Gump's, Pier Market and Boudin Sourdough Bakery. There are several kid friendly attractions such as a double-decker carousel and an aquarium. I love all the unique stores on Pier 39, my favorites being the Sock Shop, Le Beastro, Making History and We Be Knives. Pier 39 has a lot of great photo ops, especially at the end of the pier where you can view the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the famous seals! Parking is expensive and hard to find if the lot is full and on the weekends it gets very crowded on the pier. However I highly recommend Pier 39 for visitors or people who haven't been before as they have something for everyone, especially kids and pet owners!

fun afternoon spot

by LaceyM

I took my parents here over the weekend. Yes, it is a touristy spot but sometimes it is nice to be a tourist in your own town!

Recommended (but w/Mixed Feelings)

by kingnancy

I've got mixed feelings about pier 39. The shops, and their staff s are very good, but the common areas are crowded and a bit cramped. I also have buyer's remorse about some of the pricey items I bought.

On the other hand, one can find beautiful, original art that cannot be found anywhere else. As far as the eateries, if you get a nice table, the views of the bay are fantastic. In fact, one would be hard-pressed to find a better place at the Embercadero to eat, while relaxing at the same time.

Pros: Views

Cons: Crowded
