Food is Excellent - if you know how to order and instruct the chef how to prepare your steak. The turnover rate is high on the wait staff so you have to find and demand one that is good. Only downside is that the bathrooms always have horrible odor problems.

Went there Feb 2011. Told us a 30 minute wait but winded up being 45. Service was slow once seated. Went for a good steak but only got one, the ribeye. The prime rib was cold and barely cooked to rare. Had little if any taste to it.

While on vacation June 2010, friends wanted to try this place so we did. Never again, service slow, carpet dirty, table sticky!!! I ordered steak over cooked, tasteless. Never again! What a waste of $$. Shame on your Food Network for recommending such a disappointing place to eat.

**Update 4.4.11**

I had to drop a star after a recent trip that will probably be my last as it was even worse than before. I honestly don't know who can even come here anymore, what a sad day this is.

This used to be my second favorite restaurant (behind their former neighbor Border Cafe) & I've been to every location (save for the one that I think existed in Springfield for a short while). I've been coming to the original Hilltop since 1987 very regularly but now that has ended due to the overall decline in food quality, poor management, price raising while portions fall.

Anyone who thinks this place is still great is just kidding themselves & sadly, I think they have less than five years left before finally folding. I really wish this wasn't the case & I think with fresh blood out front & in the kitchen this place would need the upstairs again like it did in 1987. Although I have no restaurant experience, I would quit my job today if they gave me a crack at running this place as I couldn't do any worse than they do today. Also, I'd really like to see this place rise again as there is so much history to build on...

The Hilltop Steak House is what it is. It is a landmark that has been on route one forever. You can't miss the life size cows out front. The food is good for what you pay. The prices are very reasonable. The service is good.

IN MARCH 2009 I WENT TO THIS RESTAURANT PUCHASED THE BONE-IN SIRLION. I ORDERED IT MEDIUM. IT CAME MEDIUM THE PIECE OF STEAK I RECEIVED HAD FAT THROUGHOUT IT. THE OUTSIDE OF THE STEAK WAS CHARCOAL BURNT AND THE STEAK WAS TASTELESS.I SENT IT BACK AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD GIVE ME A BETTER QUALITY CUT
THE NEXT STEAK I RECEIVED WAS COOKED CLOSER TO MEDIUM-WELL. SAME QUALITY CUT SAME BURNT CHARCOAL TASTE I SENT THAT STEAK BACK TO. THE WAITRESS TOLD ME THAT THE STEAK DIDN'T LOOK GOOD SO WHY DID SHE SERVE IT TO ME?
HOW CAN ANYONE EAT THIS STEAK!
IF YOU WANT A DECENT STEAK GO TO TEXAS ROADHOUSE IN EVERETT MA OR BROCKTON MA AVOID THIS PLACE

The Hilltop has been out of the control of the originally family twice, this being the second and probably last time time. The quality has plummeted both times. The quality is so bad now I doubt the corporation running it even cares. Look for the prime real estate it occupies on Route 1 to be a hotel or Mall in a few years.

Went to the Hilltop on 2/14/09. I had been there about 5 years ago and had a bad experience (overcook meat, poor quality), but thought I would give it a second chance. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

The greeter gave me a card with a number printed on it and said he would call my number in about 30 minutes for a table. Ok, no problem. 60 minutes later, I checked on the table. Whoops! They "forgot" to call me. No apologies. I was immediately seated in what I can best describe as a "cattle call" for diners.

Before I could order another drink, the waitress looked at my 1/4 full glass (I had brought a drink in from the bar) and said, "So you're all set on drinks" and walked away. I didn't feel like fighting for a drink when she came back to take orders.

The clam chowder contained only 2 small bites of clam. It should instead have been labeled "potoato chowder." The side salad arrived at the table and the first bite contained............HAIR! Ew, gross! No apologies at all. The salad was removed and replaced, but was never acknowledged as being an error. When dinner arrived, the "medium" rib eye steak was actually rare. The "medium rare" hamburger ordered was also rare. It's a steak house - they should know how to cook meat! After drinking all the water at the table, the waitress never offered a refill. The bill arrived and we were charged incorrectly.

When leaving, you are encouraged to leave out the back door rather than the front. Is this so incoming patrons won't hear those who are leaving complain about their meal? Or is it meant so that you really can feel like you are part of an assembly line restaurant?

I was completed disappointed and will never return. NEVER.

You will mmediately know you are at Hilltop because of the line going out the door. The food here is great but you will never find a time that you do not have to wait to get in.

Every type of steak you can imagine is on this menu. The prices were reasonable, and the meal came with very large portions that were all delicious. I can understand why so many people love this place.

Hilltop Steak House is an icon on Route 1 in Saugus, MA. People flock to this restaurant every week and it is filled to maximum capacity until late into the evening. The food is average at best. Not the best steak I have ever had, it was lacking flavor and it was dry. Still people love it, so maybe they were having a bad night. Slightly overpriced for the location and the decor could use an update, looks very early 80's. Can't miss it with the cows out front.

Visited the resturant on May 13,2007. Ordered steak tips and there was a little crawly thing about an inch and a half long with lots of legs, cooked into our food. If you do decide to eat there after this review I have one word for you CRUNCH. (they do not allow you to enter the word BAGS with a "U")

I hadnt been to the Hilltop in years until last night. The last time I was there I may have possibly been eating off of the childrens menu so it could be as far back as about 15-20 years but I do remember good food and long lines neither of which were present this visit. My girlfriends father was in town from Florida on business and was told repeatedly by colleagues that he had to go to the Hilltop (I was skeptical due to recent reviews from family and friends) so we met him there for dinner. Yes, it was easy to park, we were seated immediately and the service was good though I guess it would be hard to be otherwise consdering we seemed to have two servers and we were asked everything and offered everything twice (which by the end of the meal was becoming annoying, we'd order desert and then the other waitress would ask if we wanted desert!). The three of us ordered steak, I had the sirloin tips and my girlfriend and her father ordered filets. None of us were impressed. The salads were sizeable but boring (basically just lettuce and onion). One of the filets was ordered well done and it arrived at the table rarer than my medium steak tips (which I ordered that way expecting them to actually be cooked medium rare based on the reviews I read and that was what I got so it worked out well for me). My tips were cooked the way I wanted them but the onions and peppers were overcooked and mushy. The rice pilaf was more like wild rice or long grain rice than pilaf and was very dry, I took one bite and was done with it. Even the quality of the steaks was not up to par, I could have cooked them better at home on the grill and could have gotten the same quality (or better) meat at the supermarket. Both of the filets were fatty and somewhat chewy, a far cry from what a filet should be and my steak tips were average at best, chewy and dry. . . I will not be retuning to the Hilltop nor will I recommend it to anyone!

This place has really gone downhill !! The quality of the food has really gone down, while the prices have gone way up !! We used to go here once a week. We haden't been here for a couple of months due to illness, and when we went back, YUCK ! We won't go back there again. It's to bad, because we used to really enjoy it there.

You might see long lines when you you drive by one of their restaurants, and upon waiting in one those lines (sometimes for up to an hour), you will find that the steaks are no better than one you could have grilled in your back yard in half the time, and for more than half the price. While the food there is not at all bad, I just find it hard to wait so long for something I could have done just as well myself. Save your time and buy a nice cut from their butcher shop (which is very good, and had an ecellent selection), fire up your grill, and grab a cold one.

this place is not the same as it was before the food is horrible and it is not worth going to. They need to something to get themselves back to the status of best steakhouse because right now i would not even recoomend my worst enemy to go there that is how bad it is.

Well it's been two years since I was at Hilltop so I thought I'd give it another try and I'm very glad that I did. I am pleased to report that the filets were generous and excellent as was the service. The three of us were very satisfied with our meals and the bill came to only $85 including drinks. I have been a Hilltop patron for over 30 years but have avoided it the past couple of years because they lost their way but I can say that they are back, at least at my last visit they were. So if you've enjoyed Hilltop in the past but have been staying away, I recommend you go back. If you've never been, then go. The menu is basic but if you want a really good steak without paying the astronomical prices of the high end Boston steak houses, Hilltop is excellent value, once again.

The Hilltop used to be the place to go. The line was horrendously long, but only added to the whole expreience and the food was worth the wait. I have gone back twice in the last couple years as recently as Friday night. I was so sad, the Filet Mignon was disgusting. It had no flavor, was charcoal burnt on the outside and over done on the ends. The middle, although cooked rare as was ordered, was tasteless.
When my husband and I were dating we would go with friends on a Friday night, each order steak and split the Lobster Pie. Well now this "family" restaurant charges $40 for a very small lobster pie. I will never go there again. Once again, SAD!!!!

This is the worst restaurant in the city. The steak is tasteless and tough, the "vegetables" are vegall from a can, a dried up potato and iceberg lettuce drowned in dressing. Even the drinks are bad, unless it is their way of making the food taste better to put a splash of soda into a glass of vodka so you will be slightly numb when biting into your horrible meal. I do think the Plastic Cows would taste better.

This USED to be THE place to go for a great steak.
That is no longer true.
Anyone who voted this place a 10 has either never HAD a great steak or is simply waxing nostalgic to the Hilltops heyday.
For a REALLY REALLY great steak (tho' pricey)
try MORTON'S on Boylston St in Boston

Years ago this was the place to go. Things change with the times and some do not. The Hill Top Steak House is one that has not changed with the times. If you like to be pushed out of your table when you finish the last bite of your tough steak like someone dinning at Applebee's then you are in the right place. But if you like to dine, have great conversation with friends and family, go elsewhere.
Boston has many great restaurants, this is not one of them.

Frank Giuffrida, the late owner, knew what he was doing when
he opened "The Hilltop SteakHouse," in Saugus, MA, ideally
located on Route 1 South. Over the years, this famous
landmark, has attracted droves of hungry visitors to its
tastefully appointed dining and function rooms. I have been
a steady customer to this wholesome American-Style eating
establishment for many years, and I have never been
disappointed with either the menu, service, quality or value
of the food. The ambience of this fine restaurant is American
Western, and BOTH Cowboys and Native American Indians
co-exist beautifully. Once you've tried this 'SteakHouse' you
won't want to try any other. And, the 'Butcher Shop' offers
the same quality meats and assorted groceries at reasonable
prices you can expect at such a class-act operation.

Over rated. Good meat, lousy everthing else. How you can you rate a restaurant good when everything they do is bad exept one? Its like being in a Chicago stock yard. Herd 'em in, herd 'em out. Here's a nice piece of meat, now get out of here. Ask to see the wine list, oops there it is on the back of the menu. Something with a cork? Not here. If this is Boston's best, Boston has bad steak houses.

While I will agree that the food is better than average, I must say that the service is not a pleasure. It has nothing to do with the waitresses or waiters (though I don't think I have ever encountered a waiter) abilities or attitude. It more has to do with their conditioning to move you quickly like cattle waiting to be slaughtered. It is anything but relaxing.

I am sorry that I missed the chance to vote on the best steakhouses in the Boston area, because The Newbridge Cafe in Chelsea would definitely be a pick of mine.

Pros: good food, good parking, reasonably priced

This is a restaurant for folks who appreciate fresh, simlpy prepared food.

The steaks are incomparable and the accompaning veges and/or salad fresh and wholesome.

Huge portions let you re-experience the meal for lunch or dinner the following day.

Service is pleasant and efficient - a Massachusetts landmark and a must for first time visitors.

A satisified repeat visitor

I have no idea how this got a #1 rating. The food at this place is horrid. The steaks taste like the beef came from a sick herd of cattle.I have tried over and over to like this place but my opinion stays the same or gets worse each time.If you are looking for a good steak experience this is not the place to find it.The food is the worst.

I've been across the country and I have never found the same (or better) food quality or value as I have found at the Hilltop. I have been going there for over thirty years and always make it a point to go there when I come back to town. NY Steak, medium rare, yes!

You just cannot find better steak. You can't get better steak in Kansas City, Chicago, New York, Houston or Denver. This is just the place for big time steak lovers.
Everybody knows so plan your trip to Hilltop around the crowds. Saugus is still the best location but Braintree is good too.

Anyone who rated this as the top steakhouse should visit some of the editor's picks - the food and service (at editor's pics) makes Hilltop look like McDonald's - tasty, but, nothing special except the cafeteria-like wait

If you like steak, they can make it anyway you want it. The service is great but must say the lines are long, especially Friday and Saturday nights. Must say that their soup tastes like canned soup instead of homemaid. But everything else was good.

My parents used to bring me to the Hilltop when I was a child. I loved it and so did everyone else it seemed. Lines used to snake around the long corridor out front. Not anymore. The decor has not been updated in years, there are waitresses there from 1970 something (who have been come bitter may I add), and the food isn't as high quality as it used to be. It's just not the same!!
There are better steakhouses elsewhere!!

Been going there for 40 years. My parents brought me there when I was 8 years old. They still go there and now I bring my family there. Never had a bad meal. Great steaks at it's best.

The cows in the front in the restaurant must taste better than what was served to me!
The reasonable prices are outweighed by the terrible taste of the food!

Anybody who placed The Hilltop Steak House ahead of the likes of Grill 23 and The Oak Room in this survey has clearly never made the trip into Boston for a nice steak dinner. Every aspect of Grill 23 and The Oak Room far exceeds anything you will experience at The Hilltop; from the decor, to the service, to the food. The Hilltop Steak House specializes in one thing: bringing you heaping portions of red meat quickly. The steaks are simple but pretty good. Period. The Hiltop is a good steak house for those on a budget. If you are prepared to spend a little more money and want to try a truly amazing steak eating experience, head into Boston and go to Grill 23, The Oak Room, Abe & Louis, or Morton's.

the worst customer service ever! we were there for father's day a few years ago -- a baby was crying nearby-waitress said someone ought to stick a roll in its mouth to shut it up...that was after the 1.5hr wait we had to be seated...then they refused to honor our gift certs saying they had changed hands and certs had expired but didnt have notice posted anywhere someone 6ft or shorter would see...although we had the cash they made a public display in the lobby making us look like crooks...i share this story with everyone i know

Hilltop is a lot more enjoyable and has a better selection of food than any other steakhouse I've been to. And this counts for a lot: If you order a steak medium/rare, you're going to get it medium/rare. Oh yeah, and every time I go there I overeat =D

The steaks are great. The other food is just ok. If you want a big steak, the Hilltop is for you. They know how to cook it too. If you ask for medium well, it comes to that way. Check it out, it's worth the wait. And don't forget the lifesize plastic cows out front!

You feel like you are on display with the long waits and then the herding in to the special rooms. But I have driven 2 hours just to eat there then wait an hour or more once there. I think the food is very good.

10 years ago this was a great place for a great steak at a great price. Now if you just want a piece of meat? at a cheaper price, this is your place.
No true beefeater would be caught dead there.
