I recently planned my husband's birthday celebration at Sugarland. I called a month in advance and spoke with a day time manager who helped in the planning of the party. I was quoted a flat price for a set amount of gelato, pastries and a cake for fifteen people. When I attempted to pay the owner came to the cash register and informed me that there was a problem with the math and that the total was not accurate, even though her employee had set this up through her approval. She became very argumentative and defensive in her tone, in front of my husband, whose birthday party this was. When I tried to talk she would interrupt me and continued to make us feel unwanted at her establishment. She stormed off to the back of her store before we had a chance to even speak. She then went and sat down with a man at a table and proceeded to talk about us while we were left standing at the register. Her staff actually apologized for her behavior and looked quite embarrassed. We had to cut our own cake (which I pre-ordered from the establishment), the tables were never bussed and I had to provide my own plates. The owner, after finishing her meal, went behind the counter and proceeded to drink a glass of wine and then a martini, all the while glaring at the our group. Our party of 20 people had about a minimum of 2 drinks per person on top of the dessert order I had placed for the group. I would expect this to be pretty good business for a Monday evening. I have to say that the way this woman treated my husband and I was disgraceful. We both work in the food service industry and have been on the other side of the counter. I felt like I was the service provider and she was the unhappy customer, at one point I even asked her to "please calm down". With this kind of experience no amount of sugar in the baked goods or gelato can make the food taste good enough to ever return to this establishment.
