The Swedish Institute's Acupuncture Program is completely unique in this country and in the world. It has a structured curriculum that that focuses exclusively on very high level acupuncture practice in an extremely focused, close-knit environment.
The level of sophistication of the acupuncture that Jeffrey Yuen teaches encompasses the primary meridians as well as in depth study of all the secondary vessels. This is something that is completely unique to our school. Many experienced practitioners, even department chairs at other acupuncture schools, after exhausting the treatments that tcm, the type of acupuncture most commonly taught in the United States and China, has to offer, turn to classical chinese acupuncture as taught by Jeffrey Yuen to redefine their knowledge and understanding of acupuncture.
The only reason to attend another school is if one's primary focus in chinese medicine is herbology.

If you want pure acupuncture, the classical chinese medicine taught by Jeffrey Yuen offers a deep and complex system that will stand on it's own as a complete treatment strategy. We successfully address many issues commonly treated with both long term herbs and acupuncture, solely with acupuncture. This can be useful when dealing with patients on multiple medications were herbal interactions can become problematic. Acupuncture, as taught in most other schools, will most often combine herbs and acupuncture to provide effective treatment.

It is true that one can take classes with Jeffrey Yuen after graduating another program, but there is no substitute for full years spent learning straight from the source. Getting supervised clinical practice and direct feedback and dialogue with Jeffrey and other trained senior practitioners is something that cannot happen in weekend workshops.

Yes, there was a difficult period for a couple of months in 2008, when the school changed ownership, and administrative issues got to a few people. Most of us are are happy, grateful and feel blessed to have access to such a unique and powerful medicine system.

The acupuncture program at the swedish institute is a joke. I am a dissatisfied student. I would not recommend the school to interested prospective students. The school has rigid policies in place and makes it very difficult to graduate

The acupuncture program at the swedish institute is a joke. I am a dissatisfied student. I would not recommend the school to interested prospective students. The school has rigid policies in place and makes it very difficult to graduate

Pros: Jeffrey Yuen

Cons: disorganization. Dean Sonia Cabrera. Disregard for students

.

As a student of the acupuncture program at the Swedish Institute I am deeply dissatisfied. (The massage program and acupuncture are separate entities...the massage program might be ok.) Jeffrey Yuen is an amazing teacher and I feel lucky to have been able to have had classes with him. He also teaches privately at Chinatown wellness center. If you are interested in acupuncture, I would recommend that you attend a different school. While Jeffrey is amazing, you can study with him after you graduate. The swedish institute is run in an extremely disorganized way. People have no idea if they will graduate on time. The administration is very disrespectful of students and the school is not student friendly. They change policies on a whim and make it very difficult for the students. They advertise as catering to those with full time jobs but that is a lie. There are lots of weekend classes and if you miss a class you are harshly penalized for it--by not graduating on time! No make up classes are provided Spread the word that the swedish institute is very poorly run.

Check out PCOM or TriState. Or better yet....leave NYC...find a place to live that is less expensive and go have fun. Do your research before you enroll in school, and BE SURE to talk to current students to find out if they are happy with the institution. Acupuncture school is a 3-4 year commitment so don't take it lightly. School alone is stressful enough. You shouldn't have to worry about the clowns in the administration making things more difficult for you.

DON'T GO TO THE SWEDISH INSTITUTE ACUPUNCTURE PROGRAM.
Don't let them fool you. It is not what it appears.
