Let me start by saying that our wedding isn't until August. That said, I feel like I owe it to the Swaney's to post this now. We booked with them in November of 2011, then started reading reviews.... This happened because we were so swept away by the venue and the reasonable price that we didn't want to lose our day. I'm so very glad it happened that way, otherwise we might have not booked with them.

There are many negative reviews out there regarding The Franklin Room, but I want to put your mind at ease if you're considering booking. The negative reviews are not in response to the services provided by the current owners Michelle and Doug Swaney, but towards the former owners.

We toured 20+ places to find our reception venue - let me tell you a little about The Franklin Room. First, the place is amazing. It's a historical building (world's fair historical), with 30 ft ceilings, completely wooden floors (can you say HUGE dance floor), it has a stage for the DJ, and it's simply beautiful. We actually changed our date, it was that nice.

That said, you'd expect the price to be high, especially for the area, right? Wrong! They were far more reasonable than 90% of the places we visited. We're paying for most of this wedding ourselves, so we were looking for a "best bang for your buck" kinda place, we found it, without a doubt. They have several options and price ranges, but their level 1 buffet will please most people, and the price is right (call Bob Barker.. he'll tell you).

Now, about the Swaneys. Michelle has been extremely accommodating. There were several "would it be possible to" questions we had, and "yes" has been the answer every time. They were the only proprietors to request we come for dinner, instead of us having to request a tasting. Which, of course, leads me to the food.

We just had our tasting, and it was delicious. We tasted roast beef (it was cooked correctly, not surprisingly), chicken with 3 different sauces, several different vegetables, mostaccioli, and a simple salad. I was using this tasting as a two-part decision. First, was the food good... YES! Second, should we upgrade to the level 2 buffet (carved prime rib, etc). No need, even though the price difference is only $4 per person (read as extremely reasonable). If money wasn't an issue we might have, but we agreed it was far better than what we expected for the price.

Michelle is extremely responsive, and accommodating. Her husband (the cook) makes food that is impeccable. They've been available everytime we needed something, whether by email or by phone. So far, everything has been extremely stress free when working with them. I'll update this thread once our wedding is over, but I am positive I'll have nothing but good things to say. There's a reason I'm writing this review now, they deserve the business.

Best of luck in your search. Make sure you include The Franklin Room in your list of possible venues. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Update: Had the wedding last night. It was an awesome party! Everyone kept mentioning how great everything was. The food, the venue, the food.... We felt Michelle and Doug were great to work with from start to finish. The food was amazing. Definitely one of the nicest weddings we've ever been to, and so glad it was ours! We couldn't have asked for anything more.. really. Thank you again Michelle and Doug!!

We just had a wedding reception at The Franklin Room. The food was wonderful - we received many, many compliments on the food. The new owners were so easy to work with and we absolutely enjoyed the evening. The Franklin Room has a lovely vintage atmosphere that you can't find anywhere else in St. Louis for such a reasonable price.

I attended the Mardi Gras celebration at the Franklin Room on Saturday, March 5th, 2011. Their student special flyer advertised "$40... All you can eat food & drink. Draft beer, hurricanes & wine, $65 for non-students.? When I arrived at 11:00 am, they were completely out of food and hurricanes. So little food was prepared that when it was finally brought out at 12:00 it had to be rationed out to the ~20 people waiting. I received 1/4 cup of rice. The self-serve hurricane cooler was finally restocked 2 hours after my arrival. Both food and hurricanes were restocked consistently thereon every 45-75 minutes. When new food was brought out, it was only enough to fill 1/3 of a shallow buffet pan. There was constantly a crowd of ~20 people waiting patiently at both the cooler and the "buffet" that many people who refused to blindly wait around simply did not get served. Complaints to the staff resulted in "we've got someone working on it," with no ETA. Each time I looked inside their kitchen they only had 1 person cooking the food while 2 others stood nearby assisting/watching/chit-chatting. None of the staff seemed anxious or like they were in any hurry to try and meet the demand, and were almost entirely apathetic when people complained. Service did not improve until approximately half the crowd left around 4 in the afternoon. There really is no excuse for how poorly Franklin Room mismanaged their Mardi Gras celebration, especially for a venue that apparently hosts wedding receptions. If I factor in the additional cost of the restaurant I had to go to for food and cab fare, Franklin Room actually cost me about $60. If I hadn??t been a student, that would have been $85 for one night at the Franklin Room. I believe Franklin Room intentionally understaffed themselves and trickled out the food and booze to maximize profit. I will recommend against Mardi Gras at the Franklin Room next year to everyone who will listen. Next year I will be returning to the Bud Light tent for $100, whose service was magnitudes beyond what I experienced at Franklin Room.

I attended a weddign at this place and it was awful. THe food looked like somethign you would get in a banquet frozen dinner and the drinks were watered down--nothing name brand, just generic vodka, bourbon and rum. I have no idea what the bride and groom paid for this shin-dig, but what a waste of money.

I would never have a reception at The Franklin Room. The 2 guys that run the place are not honest people and the food is terrible and drinks are watered down. Spend your money at another place. Your memories are worth more than worrying about a nightmare night before your honeymoon.

We had our daughters reception here a couple of weeks ago. After reading the reviews I to was a little nervous. The evening turned out to be great. We didn't have to worry, they took care of everything and the evening just seem to flow. At first they do appear to be strict, but it is for your safety and they have been in this business along time and their system works. We had so many comments on how nice the reception was and that the food was good. If your are looking for somewhere other than a cookie cutter banquet room, the atmosphere is so unique. I would highly recommend them!

We just held our wedding reception this November at the Franklin Room and had a great experience. I had read the previous reviews and was a little nervous about our wedding being there, but all in all, the night was great. Some pros: food was good. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely good (we had the carved roast beef and ham as our meats.) It was hot, fresh, and there was plenty for everyone. The price is extremely affordable. The servers and staff are very polite. The room is beautiful and not like many others in St. Louis. It does not have the "banquet room" feel to it and we loved the high ceilings and all hardwood floors. Cons: very strict guidelines. Gary and Hank, the two managers, definitely have their own way of doing things. There are specific rules, but if you're not a Bridezilla you will be fine. Another con is that you only have the venue for four hours. We hoped to extend our until midnight, but had to end at eleven. Overall, I would definitely recommend this to friends and we received many compliments. If we did it over, we would still have it at The Franklin Room.

I would never think about spending 1dollar at the Franklin Room. The 2 guys who lease the room are not professional and lied about about how many people can attend the wedding reception. Very misleading and not professional. They don't let you taste the food nor do they work with you before the wedding. One of the guys actually hung up the phone on me before he was tired of dealing with details. Choose a differant venue for your wedding and hard earned money.

I attended a wedding at the Franklin Room and thought it was a beautiful location but the food was awful. After talking to the family I found out how hard it was to work with the owners. Further discussions I found four other couples that stated the owners run the wedding the way they want a wedding run and if you try and deviate from their scheduled plans on your day it is an argument. It appears to be two guys wanting to attend weddings for the rest of their lives the way they remember weddings from the '50's. So bad I can't rate this venue.

The owner is very difficult to work with at the Franklin Room. Dishonest and can not be trusted with preparing your reception/party at the hall.
Food is not good and watered down drinks. Price is great but the preparation and results are terrible.

This Place is just wonderful! My wife and i had our reception there about 4 months ago and could not have asked for better atmosphere, food, and staff! We were always greeted with a smile and "how can i help you " the only place we have been to (and my wife has been in 6 weddings in the past 21/2 years i have been in 2) where please and thank you were the words we heard most often.
We loved the Food the roast beef was so fresh and they had a wide selection of types of bread rolls(my wife likes wheat and i like white) and the pasta it was just mouthwatering! Gary and Hank the owners were so kind to us and helped with all of our question and silly request (wanting to have a slide show and birthday cake and song for my uncle). We would highly recommend to everyone! You cant go wrong if you choose this place no headaches no worries just pure greatness!

It's January 2008, I got married in June 2007 and people are still telling me how awful the food was at our reception at the Franklin Room. I finally decided to post a review. One coworker who attended compared it to dog food, but I think the food my dogs get is probably better. The meat actually resembled dog food and unfortunately for the people who were the last to go through the buffet, it was cold. A guest told me they were placing it frozen into the serving platter hoping the sauce would warm it up. The salad was really soggy like it had been sitting in dressing for hours and the bread was stale. The green beans were rubbery and tasted like bacon, although I asked them to hold the bacon. Rice pilaf was fine. If you do hold a function there, cancel the meat or do only one meat option with an extra side. The hosts/event coordinators are charming but weren't able to help me when I called with my concerns after the big day. It was an embarrasing situation and I would never have opted for the Franklin Room if I'd known what we were in for. It is a beautiful location, but friends and family who traveled far to be with us couldn't eat that for dinner.

For all the talk I heard about how well they stayed on time, our whole schedule got screwed up, despite the fact that the wedding party was on time. To top it all off, the band told us one of the coordinators was yelling at them to wrap up the last song about 10 minutes before our scheduled time to end the party. I wouldn't recommend dealing with the Franklin Room staff, or this location, for any special event, much less a one-time only wedding reception.
