This was always one of my favorite resturants in the RTP area but the staff and menu and price changes have removed it from my list for anything but lunch - maybe...and plan on $25+ per person for lunch...\r

An used to be my favorite restaurant until Saturday before last when my daughter and I both suffered from food poisoning from the tuna appetizer and diver scallops. The doctor said it was not a virus because of blood traces. I called the restaurant and they basically said that they had contacted the suppliers for recalls. I said that I wanted my money back for our dinners (we were sick for a week) in a gift card or refund or I would never dine there again. The manager said he would have to get back to me on that 5 days ago. I have a problem with not accepting any responsibly on the restaurants part. DINERS BEWARE just because they are a 5 star restaurant means nothing if food is not handled properly.

I expected a first class experience at An. The Mrs and I love sushi and don't mind paying for good food, service, etc. We couldn't get out of An fast enough. The presentations were over the top. The food was mediocre to poor, and the prices were, while in line with the arboretum, out of line with the food. Sono, in downtown Raleigh is still our favorite place for sushi. (Ask for Jessica). Highly don't recommend.

consistently great food, dessert and sushi.
impressive sea bass.
definitely the best romantic place for desserts in this area.
beautiful decor (maybe not every environmental) but very luxurious.
you can tell the chefs cares about the food and i appreciate they change the menu and tables according to seasons.
a pricey place of course, i just wish the Chef share more generosity with the staff.

My moms group had dinner here a couple of months ago, and I have to say it was a fabulous meal! Definitely pricey and I'll only go back for a special occasion, but my meal was fantastic. The honey walnut prawns were to-die-for good! The macaroons at the end of the meal were a nice touch. The waitstaff is wonderfully attentive but not intrusive. Must try!

I wouldn't recommend this place for intimate dinners. The space definitely seem to be catered towards large groups. The menu is so unique to the triangle. It's a mix of Vietnamese/Japanese and French. The best thing I've had there is foie gras infused with miso. Will definitely go back.

Dear rob1977nc....you just do not understand. First of all, if you would have checked your surroundings, your were at the "Arboritum", not a "Strip Mall". (duh). The Arboritum was developed by Ann Goodnight (the wife of Jim Goodnight, owner of SAS). The Arboritum in comprised of Restuarants including Ruth's Chris, where on any given night, you can find at least 58 full-length, fur coats. There are several boutiques that sell Goodwill Remnants for 2000% mark-ups. There is also a large, exclusive apartment building ($850-3000). ....So you see rob....the prices at An are by design, to keep common riff-raff like you out.

Pros: Located within Walking Distance of the Umstead Hotel and Spa

Cons: More Snobs than Allowed by Fire Department Regulations

The food was good. Didn't really have any complaints. Service was good too. But I can't see myself going here again. For less money I could have gone to Duck & Dumpling and gotten more food and taste just as good.
Location is odd too...for these prices you'd expect the top floor of a downtown skyscraper, not in a sprawling suburban strip mall.

I recently took my daughter to An for her birthday. We've been going to An since they opened a couple of years ago and this is her favorite restaurant. She loved it. Our server was very knowledgable about the menu. They do change the menu quite often and that's one of the things we love. Mary (my daughter) actually always gets a soft shell crab entree that is no longer on the menu but their Chef has made it every time we've come in. The beauty of the restaurant alone is breathtaking, but to have the food and service be just as great, what more can you ask for? There's not another restaurant like An in this area and whenever I have family or colleagues come into town, An is where we go. They take the time to make sure you are happy with everything and they have gone out of their way to do so many special dishes for our family. If you are looking for something different and are wanting to try something new, come to An. They even brought in Japanese Kobe for a group of mine. It's not cheap either but well worth it! You can always get something you've never had before and I bet you that you'll love it so much, that you'll order it next time you come in. This is a MUST try restaurant!!

I went to this restaurant with my wife on Wednesday. We started out at the bar for drinks. I thought both bartenders were very friendly and knowledgeable. However, I felt as though the female bartender's choice of attire was highly inappropriate. I've never been to any restaurant considered to be fine dining that allowed their employees to dress in such a low scale manner. A beautiful girl like her does not need to show so much skin, and the fact that management condones it is appalling. After drinks we had dinner in the dining room. The service was great, but the food was terrible. When our entrees were brought to the table the presentation was great, and I was looking forward to enjoying my meal. I was very disappointed!!! The presentation did not live up to the actual taste of the food. I always give restaurants a second chance. So many things can go wrong in a dining experience so I don't like to base my opinion on one experience. This place came highly recommended so I hope the next time I visit it will live up to the reputation it has among other guests. As I said, the service is great, but I hope the quality of the food will get better. In this economy, nobody wants to pay for a high dollar meal and get low dollar quality. And I almost forgot, the restaurant smelled like sewage. I don't know if this is a common problem, but nobody wants to smell sewage while they are eating. I hope by the next time I come back these issues will be addressed. Running a restaurant isn't just based on quality service, the food has to be up to par as well.

Superb evening. Exquisite rooms, exquisite tableware (check out the napkins!) and presentation. Beautiful and creative look to our appetizer plate and arrangement. All 4 entrees were deemed excellent in taste, creativity, quality of ingredients and consistency to the intent and description on the menu. Desserts were likewise very satisfying, with rich garnishes, subtle flavors, satisfying without being overwhelming. Wines chosen by steward, white and red, were superior. Service was impeccable -- relaxed, friendly, fun, yet highly professional and accommodating. It was easy to see that the staff were proud of their restaurant. Nice tour of their wines by youthful sommelier who spoke with satisfaction of of "building" several varietals over the past year and helping patrons understand his choices and offerings. Cannot wait to get back

The food was pretty good - but the atmosphere is a little lacking for such an upscale restaurant. It's very large and open - so sound travels. We went for lunch and there was a very large party next to us. It contributed to the noise - but also effected our service. I'd give it another try, but it didn't live up to my expectations.

This has been one of the consistent venues that I always choose to dine with my out of town guests and business clients, but that will be changing soon. I have always been a fan of an. Unfortunately, I have just been disappointed the past few times that I have dined there. The last few times, the kitchen has been a disappointment. Sometimes the food is overcooked, served luke warm, or just salty. Some of my guest just commented on how the food is okay.
Now a days the food is just average and the wine selections are blah. As for the service side, it lacks professionalism. I had guests dining there and the server was not genuine and lack service knowledge. One of my guest placed an order for a medium rare filet, but did not get what he asked for. The server tried to fix the problem, but made remarks as he walked away. If that wasnt enough, the service staff were goofing around, while others have a ear piece on when greeting my guests.
As for the bartenders, they are not friendly and dont offer service with a smile.
Its sad to lose a great place like an. I definitely no longer recommend an to anyone, unless they are looking for average. Maybe since the prices have dropped, the food and service have followed.

The imaging thing about this restaurant is that is incorporates everything you would expected from a "Asian Fusion" metro city restaurant. Every single dish I have ever tried here is incredible; Chef Michael Chuong tasting menu always find ways of blending items in an unexpected ways. The miso sea bass with shiitake mushroom and ginger meunier sauce is my all time favorite. The waitstaff are sincere and excited about explaining about their favorite dishes, and the wine list speak for itself.

Best restaurant in the triangle.

After coming across An several times my wife and I decided to give it a shot.

The atmosphere is certainly trendy but some of the pieces on the wall are actually very good so the style does have some merit. Lets get this out of the way right off the top, you will pay extra here because its trendy. If you cant live with that then stay away. If you're ok with that keep moving forward.

To really enjoy An you need to understand what you are walking into and order appropriately. This is an Asian fusion restaurant so order fusion dishes or order the tasting menu. This is far from the best sushi restaurant in town so dont treat it like one. We ordered a tasting place of appetizers and it was very good, crisp, clean, fun dishes.

We followed this up with some sushi rolls which were mediocre. You simply dont torch the top of Toro fatty tuna, under any circumstances. Tragic.

Order the fusion dishes and your dining experience should be above average, just avoid the sushi rolls, that money is better spent elsewhere.

I don't know what the other user is saying. I have dined at An numerous of times and every time has been absolutely wonderful. I know every place has their off days but maybe my husband and I are just lucky. We have visted An many times since November of last year and we have had no complaints. We went last night to celebrate our anniversary and had a spectacular time with delicious food. We tried the tasting menu for the first time and it was unbelievably delicious. It was 5 courses, all of which were fantastic and the best was the dessert which was strawberry flambe which the manager made for us table side. I have also met Chef Michael and his daughters who run the restaurant and they all are very nice and sweet. Obviously the Goodnights, who have a lot of money, would not invest millions into a restaurant and a Chef if they did not think him capable. Sounds like a disgruntled employee than an actual customer. It's extremely rude and malicious whenever unhappy employees do this to a company that is apparently very successful. I have dined at An, and the service is very friendly and helpful in choosing dishes to try. You should try the sushi, it definitely is the best in the area!

My husband and I visited An for the second time this week. Our first experience was good. The service was great, the atmosphere is wonderful and the food was good. On this second trip, the service was still very good but the food was not good. My husband ordered the taster's menu and out of the five items he was served, only two were good; one was dessert which was prepared at the table by a staff member. This menu item is expensive and the descriptions are not very clear. One of the items he received was a fish jaw that was one of the worst things I have ever tasted, very fishy and salty. I ordered a Vietnamese wedding soup that was basically a really bad egg drop soup with whole quail eggs in it. All of the items that we had were too salty and left a bad after taste which lasted until the next day. We have not gone there for just sushi, so I cannot comment on that, but I would be very careful ordering from their regular menu and would ask for detailed info on the items before ordering. My husband and I like to try new and different food items and do not mind spending a lot for a good dinner, but this last experience at An's was not worth it. As this was my husband's birthday, this was very disappointing for us.

I've been to AN several times, for business and pleasure. Always a great experience and the food has never disappointed. The server santiago is very helpful and has turned me on to some of the best sushi around. Somewhat hard to get into but well worth the wait. And if you just want a quick bite and drinks the bar is great . Try the asian progression and tuna tartare apps, great with their amazing beverage selection!

Was my second time to AN, although I was not impressed (especially with the bill) the first go round, my girlfriend talked me into a return trip.
I made reservation for a weekday evening got there 10 minutes early, and watched people coming in the door get seated in front of me for about 40 minutes. (hate waiting to give people large amounts of money)
So we walked across the parking lot to Bonefish, and got a great meal for a fair price.
I think I heard them say "Sienfield party of four " as we were leaving
My opinion - food is good, service is below average, price is a little high, and the wait time for seating and delivery of food is excessive.

Pros: You get to visit Cary

Cons: You get to visit Cary

The story of Chef Michael Chuong is good reading and you?ll find it on the ?n web site. Lucky for us, we need not be members of Prestonwood Country Club to enjoy his talents as now he has a more public showcase, off Harrison Avenue in Cary.
?n is a Vietnamese word meaning "to eat" or "dine out", and it's also a play on the name of Chuong's benefactor, Ann Goodnight (whose husband is thought to be the wealthiest man in North Carolina).
We've dined there several times now, but our last visit may have been the best. We sat at a low bar in the front right portion of the house, and there they feature a menu entitled "Viet, Sushi & Raw" items. Chef Chuong and his wife, Lon, greeted us and Lon suggested we just let Richard, one of the bar chefs, whip-up dishes for us at his whim. We agreed and Richard went to work.

We had:

Duck a la Colonial: duck confit, foie gras, brioche, cucumber, onions and miso salad.
Land & Sea: Shrimp Tempura, cucumber, avocado, torched beef tenderloin with a spicy cream sauce.
Oysters with mignonette and sriracha cocktail sauce.

Chef Chuong asked if we'd ever had Japanese himachi cheek. "No,", we replied and he quickly grabbed a chunk of fish from the cooler and prepared it for grilling. The meaty and fatty pieces of flesh in and around the jaw of this large fish are really tasty eating, and we were grateful for our special off-menu dish.

For dessert, we had Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate: white chocolate ice cream with berries, milk chocolate shake and a slice of warmed, dark chocolate chess pie--- all on one plate! The other plate featured a poached pear, a slice of what can best be described as thick French toast soaked in some sort of liqueur, and a scoop of caramel ice cream.

Total bill (with drinks and tip) was $210.
We will return!

We have been hesitating to try An because we thought it may be very expensive and there weren't going to be recognizable things to eat. Boy were we wrong. We stopped in for lunch one day. The lunch was outstanding! The food was excellent, the service was attentive and polite and I felt that my meal was adequately priced. There were so many appealing menu items that I didn't know what to order. We loved it so much we couldn't wait to go back. Although we haven't had an opportunity to go back for dinner (it's only been 1 week) we stopped in late one evening for some sushi and a drink. Again, a very enjoyable meal and evening. It reaffirmed my review. Again, we can't wait to go back for dinner. This is, by far, one of the best restaurants in the entire area! It is a MUST TRY.

My staff could not stop from complimenting the food and the service. This restaurant is really great with larger groups and the food is impeccable. We will be back for dinner soon!

I don't think I've ever written a negative review of a restaurant before, but my recent experience certainly warrants this one. I ate at An shortly after it opened and found it just so-so. I ate there again recently, and while the decor is nice, I would not recommend this place to anyone. The food is OK, but it is definitely overpriced. I was talked into ordering more than I could eat, and the service was unbelievably SLOW. There were about 45 minutes between the appetizers and main course, during which time our server was nowhere to be found. No bread refills, no updates on our order, no nothing until we flagged the server down. I don't mind paying for good food, but I do mind paying $50 for a glass of wine and two sushi rolls that were not worth the money. A lot of other people seem to like this place, but my husband and I will not return.

This place is amazing. The food is incredible, I can't say enough about it. The decor is beautiful. The only problem are the high prices, but it's worth it for such a great experience. Hands down the best restaurant I've been to in the Triangle. What are you waiting for? Go try it!!!

Went there recently for my wife's birthday. Great service, Great Food, Great Atmoshphere. We primarily had sushi and I have to say it's the best sushi I have had in North Carolina. It's as good as or possible better than Nobu in New York City which is considered one of the best of NYC.

I went to An for the first time and had the best dining experience I have had for a long time. Food was exceptional and even though the place was packed, the food was amazing. Presentation is something you see on tv or in the bigger cities, and the dishes were so flavorful and delicious. I can't wait to go back. A place you have to try.

I went to An last week for a company christmas dinner and it was phenomenal! The service was great and the food was completely unlike anything in the area. I had the Sea bass for dinner at our server's suggestion and it was delicious. My husband had the Kobe strip and when they brought it out, the manager flambe the Kobe on a massive stone. I tried a piece and if I wasn't full, I would have ordered one myself. But I know what I am getting next time! The food is a little pricey but it isn't a waste if you get your money's worth. I love AN and we are definitely coming back..

First of all, let me apologize to all the previous posters' whose advice I ignored. I thought they just didn't appreciate a good meal and An couldn't possible be that bad-but it was. Plus, I'm pretty easy going and usually like about anything.

We went for a business lunch yesterday. We had a reservation for noon and we were seated right away. I was excited when I saw the menu and was having a hard time deciding since several items sounded absolutely wonderful. Our waitress was not helpful at all and had little to say about the menu when we asked questions. In fact, she had little to say to us or do with us throughout the whole meal. It took us over an hour to get our first bit of food, miso soup that was stone cold. Then it took another hour to get our entrees. That food was also cold and the portions were tiny. The tables nearby were equally frustrated with the lack of service, the hour or more wait for each course, and the tiny portions. We were finally out of there at 2:30 and all left much hungrier than we were than we came in even though we ate every scrap of food they gave us. The food was nothing special at all, but we were starving at this point. After paying, our host asked to speak to the manager. After waiting and waiting he finally gave up and we left. I was so disappointed with the whole experience.

I dined at An last Friday evening with a friend and found the experience so pleasurable that compliments are due. The staff was sincerely courteous and professional from the time we entered until we left. I was impressed with our servers knowledge of the menu and the presentation from the kitchen. The atmosphere was perfect and I felt at home. I will look forward to returning.

The food was ok, nothing to really talk about, not worth the $$$$. The service was terrible. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant and the waiter barely noticed us (2 party table). We will not return to this restaurant.

This was the first time that I had the chance to go AN. It was really a great experience for me and my wife and her in-laws. The hostess was very courtesy and personable. Since my in-laws are very particular about certain things, we needed to change tables. The hostess instantly got the manager to attend to our needs. Immediately, he had a table prepared for us and made sure all our needs were accomodated.
Besides the beautiful decor, the service that Cliff provided was stellar. He provided excellent service and had great knowledge of the product. It was just a great experience. The food was very refreshing and delicious.
At the end of the evening my in-laws was saying how much they enjoyed the evening. I would like to thank the manager, James for going above and beyond to accomodate us. Thanks.

Things must have obviously changed recently. When I went there for dinner, I had great service. The waiter, santigo, was friendly and attentive. Following his suggestions, we ordered the sea bass, the red snapper, and the land and sea sushi roll. He definitely went the extra mile to please us and make our experience one of a kind. We will certainly go back soon!

An is quite an amazing place. One of a kind. The food and presentation are unbelievable. I went to An on Wednesday with a few friends and we tried our server's suggestion of the tasting menu. A 5 course meal for the whole table. It was excellent. My favorite was the entree. It was a Kobe Filet cooked on a stone and flambe'd in front of us. It was spectacular! No where in the triangle can you get something like that, especially for $55. The whole coursed meal was $55 dollars! Can you believe that? The whole was fabulous. From the service of the waitstaff and front desk, to the food, presentation and ambience, everything was more than we could have asked for. It was a great evening and I can't wait for the next time.

I really do not see why you would want to dine at another restaurant. There are so many different dishes on the An menu, you can go for days without getting tired. My husband and I went for dinner and the food was fabulous. I had the Snapper and when it came out, a whole snapper was placed in front of me. It tasted wonderfully. Never before had I had a whole fish for dinner on my own. Nor can you get that type of presentation or taste at any chain restaurant. An is very much unlike any other in this area. I was reading some of the other reviews and was able to relate to a few of them. Yes it does get noisy but would you ever go to a restaurant that is not busy? You know it has to be excellent. As for the gentleman who was over charged, the same thing happened with my card and yes my account was off for the next few days but the managment staff were very courteous in speaking with me over the matter and resolved it. I do think it is an inconvience but I do not think you should demand or expect to get something in return. Especially if the situation is resolved. Another thing that I love about An, is that it is ran by the Chef's family. One of his daughter's gifted us with a bottle of wine and thanked us for dining with them. She was very pretty and very friendly. You cannot get as personal as that with a lot of restaurants. She told us a little about the Chef's history and her family's background. She was very sweet and the restaurant is beautiful. I plan on returning often. His daughter also told us the dinner menu is going to change at the end of the month so I cannot wait to see what new dishes there will be. This restaurant is unlike any other and we should all thank god that it exists in Cary.

I have travel all over the metropolitan area and I love new fusion restaurants. I found a new wonderful restaurant in Cary.
I have dined at custasean in California, Moto in Chicago etc, by far An is the best. I appreciated the varieties and traditional flavors you can't find in any cookie cutter restaurant.
