I had a terrible experience here with my four year old twins. The young teachers taught them very sexy dance moves to a totally inappropriate song: Mambo Number 5, complete with suggestive lyrics. When I shared my concerns with the owner that my children were being taught to dance and treat others, esp my son's "male role" in the dance, like sex objects when they are just tiny kids and that there is a whole world out there of wholesome music, like Annie and Disney, she literally laughed at me. It was humiliating. I get that the young teachers want to dance sexy, but these are just tiny kids. I want my kids to enjoy the innocence of their childhood as long as possible and not teach them Britney Spears and her entourage type dance moves.

I love the theater arts preschool for my son. He loves the teachers. Learning through the arts is right up his alley. They chant the days of the week and months of the year! The rhythmic counting has him dancing and counting all over the house. Learning is so much fun for him now.

I love this studio. My daughters have been here for quite some time. Viewing windows are wonderful. I love the fact that they request their dancers to wear a cover-up to and from lessons. I just use my T shirt--no cost to me. It's just plain proper dance ettiquette. I can't believe that anyone would want their dancer's running around in dance attire outside!
I know the studio gives a free lesson to try classes so that once you sign up you are happy! I guess you really can't please everyone but I know they have a great loving staff! Thumbs up for me!

We love Joyce Willett School of Dance because we have finally found a place that is diverse, has a great balance between strict dance skill learning and just FUN and has a wonderful and caring staff.

This is not the first dance studio my daughter danced at but it is the one she will stay at. When I decided to change studios I called and talked to several, when I talked to Joyce, she gave me several options for classes and told me to come and have my daughter try them for FREE. Needless to say we never left! She is starting her 4th year at JWSD. I love that they actually follow a curriculum and do skills testing so that I know that my daughter is actually progressing. Also the extras like teaching them how important nutrition is for a dancer, how to stretch and warm up properly etc... They are structured and disciplined yet FUN and the dancers thrive in this environment. Also, forget what you may have seen for a recital in the past, JWSD recitals are well rehearsed and coordinated and you will see a SHOW! I recommend JWSD 200%

Everyone seems nice at the beginning, and the teenagers that teach the summer camps are great. But you need to be very wary of the "Zealot-like" owner and her daughters. They take themselves waaaaaay too seriously at this place.

Make sure to watch through the observation window. They can often be observed grabbing kids by the arms roughly and yanking them around on the dance floor if they aren't in the exact location they want them in. Often the child ends up crying. I was also there one day when a child was roughly brought outside the studio door just sobbing and the instructor (one of the owner's daughters) told the mom that she "just couldn't work with the child". This was all because this 4-year old was scared to roll over in the tumbling class. I understand discipline for "serious" dance students, but come on, we are talking about pre-schoolers here. How about some kindness with a dose of patience thrown in for good measure???

Oh....almost forgot, they don't tell you this upfront, but they have some weird obsession with cover-ups. All kids, regardless of what the temperature is outside (think 100+ degrees with humidity in the TX summer), have to wear a cover-up to class. They don't tell you about this little rule of theirs until after you are signed up and have already paid your fees - and it is not in any of their documentation. But get this....they only have to wear it when they walk from your car into the studio. Now what is the point of this? What exactly are we covering up? Pre-schoolers in dance clothes - come on.... Funny thing - after we had been there for a week, they rolled out a collection of "cover-ups" that they had made/decorated themselves for sale for $20 - $30 each. Hmmmmm....

After we left the studio I ran into 2 other mothers that had left the studio over the years for exactly the same reasons we did. Not at all surprised though, because a leopard doesn't ever change its spots.

I have had several children attend Joyce Willett School of Dance over the past 15 years. I find the instruction to be top notch. The teachers are all very friendly and inspiring. There is opportunity here for either a casual dance experience or a very serious one. Many dancers leave JWSD and receive scholarships to The Edge in L.A. or steps in New York. We were able to spot J.W.S.D dancers in several major films. On the flip side, this is a great place for recreational dance. The teacher are very nurturing and the preschool programs are outstanding. The graded curriculum makes it easy to move from one level to the next while previously learned skills are reinforced and new ones are introduced. The fee scale (which has huge reductions for taking multiple hours per week) encourages dancers to train more! No wonder there are so many accomplished dancers here! It's affordable. The ethnic mix in most classes makes everyone feel at home.I highly recommend this school.

My three daughters have been dancing at Joyce Willett School of Dance for 6 years.

The dance training is exceptional. The teacher child ration allows for much individula correction and praise.

The studio is like one big happy family and everyone is welcomed. The summer camps are reasonable, educational and so much fun.

The hip-hop classes are very upbeat and current .....and the drill team prep classes really get the teens ready for dance team in high school.

I highly recommend the studio to everyone.

My son loves his dance class. He participates in the mom's day out creative arts preschool and really enjoys it. The recitals are very professional and I can tell that the studio tries to keep costs (costumes and recital fees as well as monthly charges) reasonable. The recitals are under one hour and entertaining to everyone! I can't wait to sign him up for the summer camps.

The teachers are experienced, not only in dance, but also in child development. What a wonderful program for young children.

My daughter is 16 years old. We recently moved to Austin and The Joyce Willett School of Dance was recommended to us for our serious dancer. We were amazed at the prices and discounts offered for taking multiple hours per week. The studio is not only ethnically diverse, but also sexually diverese so I know the parents of the boys involved must be in heaven. We were aware that our daughter needed several ballet, tap and jazz classes and expected to pay so much more. We received free trial lessons and placement classes. I cannnot tell you how pleased we are with the top notch instruction and genuine evaluation and recommendations that we received from the studio staff! She is training weekly for many hours and the opportunities for conventions, competitions and extra workshops is indeed impressive. The studio even hires in the best faculty from L.A., New York and Chicago to train our young dancers. Wow!
