Best happy hour in town, no question. Great cocktails, very good food (braised short ribs, roasted eggplant, Caesar salad), all for $5.

This place is absolute garbage:

1) Lying to guests about the ingredients: they are NOT serving Kobe beef, you just can't get Kobe outside of Japan and why don't you look up the prices for Akaushi beef, which is available in the U.S. and

We had the Duck Trio appetizer (special), it was great.
We ordered the wine of the month, but since they were out, they gave us a better bottle for the same price, which made me happy.
We both ordered the dinner specials (halibut and steak). I could not stop eating my steak dinner with shitake mushrooms and onion leeks. The sauce was delish and the season on the steak was perfect. His halibut good too, but my steak definately stole the show.

You have to have the ceasar salad. Potatoe croutons and other yumminess is involved, it's award winning.

dessert was good but I was so full byy that point, I could not enjoy it.

The food was excellent. The service was not. Our waitress was condesending (when she managed to stop by the table which wasn't very often). Some people should not be in the service industry. Friendly, helpful, nice.... not words we would use to describe our server. It's a shame. The space is great and food even better, but I'm not going to pay someone to treat us like an inconvenience. Word to the wise; with all of the GREAT restaurants offering GREAT service in Houston, why settle for this???

I made a reservation for me and three others; two of us were having a birthday. They tried to seat us with "the prom crowd" at the back of the restaurant when there were plenty of tables at the front (a much nicer spot). The food was cold, the service was not good and they never acknowledged the birthdays even though I had spoken to them by phone twice prior to our arrival. Very disappointed.... Won't do again when Houston has so many other more attentive places to go to for that much money.

I'm never going to Mockingbird Bistro again. I picked this place for dinner on New Year's Eve because I've been there once before and I thought the food was good and it had a nice romantic cosy atmosphere. We booked an early dinner, 5:45 pm, to avoid the crowds. When we got there the place was practically empty, but when the hostess tried to seat us at a tiny table near the kitchen and I asked for a nicer table, she gave us nasty look and said that all the other tables were booked. I've been a restaurant hostess before in college, so I knew she was talking total BS. So, I told her that we wouldn't take long to eat and to check with her boss and she walked away with an attitude to go check. Then her boss came up to us with an equally nasty attitude and told us amongst all the empty tables that the only other table she could give us was in the wine room but we had to be out of there by 7:30 pm. So we took the table and whole time we sat there the hostesses and wait staff kept giving us dirty looks. We were totally ignored while the other customers who were obviously rich regulars got star treatment. We felt so uncomfortable that we ordered our food, ate it quickly, and skipped dessert just to get out of there. The food was good but the way we were treated didn't make for a good dining experience. This was not the dining experience I got the last time I was here. The atmosphere was extremely stuffy and snobby. I expected more for a restaurant of this caliber. Thanks Mockingbird Bistro for ruining our New Year's Eve dinner!

I would like to echo the same sentiments as most of the patrons and reviewers of the wonderfull eating establishment. I've been wanting to, for sometime, try this resturant out and finally got the chance this past weekend. When arriving parking was not an issue nor was getting a table, though we did not arrive till around 9 pm. Once we were seated and settled in I enjoyed looking over the area and decor. It was nice looking out the windows because it gave you a little sense you were looking out your dining room windo w at home inspecting the dimily lit neighborhood. I thoroughly enjoyed the menu choices and the wine list had a nice range of lower priced drinks and the upper priced ones, but well within the range of acceptable. I ended up choosing the 'mountain trout' first course while my companion had the 'king salmon'. I would have to say that was one of the best dishes I've eaten in a long time.
I would highly encourage anyone to try this place out and definitely will visit this eatery soon.

If I had only one issue, its not with the resturant but with Citysearch dispalaying that this place is a $$ meal price eatery. Its really $$$ - $$$ 1/2 bills, because the average main entree is over $32.

I live within walking distance, so have visited repeatedly over the years. The specials can be pricey, so ask first (Kobe steak-$95!!)
The food is good but other places are better for the money.

You can't beat the food at MB, it's fantastic. However, unless you're one who just rolled in from River Oaks, the wines are a bit pricey for the upper middle class. It's really a shame they don't offer some of the nicer wines retailed at $18 to $35 a bottle, cause even after they put their 2-2.5 times mark-up, we'd still be paying $50-$80 a bottle. $46 for a $16 bottle of Groth Sav Blanc is pushing it a bit; and the $50 for the $20 bottle of Becker Cab Sav is way out there. Too bad the wine prices aren't in line with the food prices.

So when I want a good wine, I go elsewhere and have my nice wine at a fair price along with a great meal. When I go to MB, I have an excellent meal without the wine. Oh well....

Great little restaurant in the quaint Montrose neighborhood. Upscale but comfortable decor and food with pretensions to haute cuisine that hits the mark. The chef, John Scheely is personable and very creative. Not much bar action but a great place to take a date. I highly reccommend.

For a truly impressive dining experience, this Bistro is the place to go. From the lavishly decorated interior to the artfully prepared dishes, this Bistro has its bases covered. As far as Houston restaurants go, many things are sort of the same. This place will make you forget you're even in Houston!

My Husband and I decided to go treat ourselves before we went to have our taxes done... Boy, did we feel great after eating such a wonderful lunch! The Beef Carpaccio made me think "This is the reason for cows!" The prime steak was another devine beef plate... cooked to perfection and served with some of the world's best pommes frites (or as we call them... french fries). The prices are steep, but what you would expect from a classically trained Chef who operates a beautiful top notch bistro in the middle of River Oaks!?

My wife and I recently had lunch together. I could not have asked for anything more. Considering the menu's offerings, it was fairly priced. A bit on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for. The service was prompt and attentive, while far from intrusive. My wife enjoyed her meal immensely, and the mussels were to die for! Not an everyday hangout, but well worth a trip. Kudos to the Chef!

I went with a girlfriend to celebrate a special occasion. We had an 8pm reservation on a Friday night and were seated promptly upon arrival. The food was superb and the service was excellent. The chef came out mid-course and greeted us and asked if we were pleased with the food. For dinner I had the tuna steak w/ wasabi whipped potatoes - DELISH. If you have a sweet tooth you absolutely MUST try the flourless chocolate cake. AMAZING. This place is a bit pricey - definately not $$. We bough a half bottle of wine, split an appetizer & dessert, and each had an entree and a cup off coffee and it was well over $200. Good romantic spot though! I will return...when my wallet recovers!

I dined last Friday at Mockingbird, and the food was "off". Our meals started with the 1015 onion soup, and it had a really bitter taste as if it had been burned. The color was really dark and no amount of salt could bring out the flavor I am normally accustomed to. The waiter happily replaced the soup with a delicious Ceasar salad, but it was not worth the $14 price tag. On to the entree which for me was the short ribs. They had no flavor and the barley risotto was cold. I regretted not sending it back, but I did not want to be a pain to the waiter who was trying his best to impress.

I dine at Mockingbird several times a year, but I am increasingly amazed at the prices they charge and the lack of perfection that one would expect at these prices. There were several empty tables so perhaps I am not alone in my assessment, despite the numerous positive reviews. I love the loft like space that is casual yet still upscale, but for the money, Mark's and other fine establishments with neat atmospheres are a much better sure thing.

My parents were in from out of town and we had heard everything about this place and always wanted to try it. We book 8:45 reservations and arrived and 8:30. By 10:00 we still had not been seated. Needless to say, we left and will never return. The staff was rude, and they tried to get us to pay for our drinks. NO WAY! Why make reservations! Thanks for destroying our night. I will pass the word.

The wire list and food menu were excellent, and our meals, complete with soup, daily specials, and dessert were served and tasty divine.

One of the top 10 restaurants I've been too in Houston, and the prices were not bad for the level of food and service quality.

We were seated upstairs. When the waiter came to get our drink order he was out of breath and sweating a lot. He took our drink order and then it was a solid 15 minutes before we got our drinks, and that was only after I ran him down and asked him where they were. When he brought them, one of them was wrong. I took it back downstairs to the bar myself. When he came back to tell us about the specials he flew through them so fast that we really did not catch very much of what he said.
The sea bass was excellent and the filet was pretty good. The flourless chocolate cake was wonderful. The quality and presentation of the food was good. The service was terrible. I can't see myself going back anytime soon.

Celebrating a Birthday, five family members went for the tasting menu, three of us chose the wine pairings option.

Every ingredient was presented and treated with the utmost respect. A couple in our party had never had foie gras, but it was prepared in such a way that anyone with any palate would *love*. The wines were far from run-of-the-mill, and truly quite adventurous.

Just trust Chef, and everything's gonna be great, honest! What a treat!

Groovy place, not groovy overall. If you're under 50, that is.
If you're over 50, probably feels 'rebellious'.

Decent food, but kind of silly suburban folk looking as if they dress-up
to go out and drive waxed cars to impress. My own set goes more for great food and wine.
But the grilled lamb was decent, as were the salads. Sorta dated in the 80's overall.
Would prefer da Marco or Catalan or Max's (off hours only).

Food was horrible!! We had four people in our party and no one liked the food. Portions are so big they are unappetizing. Food presenation was unsightly. The dinning room is dark and dusty. Very expensive for such poor quality food and experience. Staff was nice but you can not run a restaurant with a nice staff and bad food!

The hostess a joy to be greeted by and she gave us a wonderful window table. The chilled tomato basil soup was perfection as a first course and the calamari was lightly fried so you dont feel bad for devoring it! Marcy( the vino expert) helped pick out a out of this world wine ( nicely priced) that went perfectly with the lamb entree. Overall my freinds and I had a great time. Dont forget dessert, the sorbets were great for beating the Houston heat! the only pitfall was Mockingbird a little loud on a Sat. night, the low lights and romatic-gothy help overshadow the noise.

Cons: Average food

.

The waitstaff is attentive without making me feel rushed. My favorite starter is the
charcuterie with the pate and Serrano ham. The chicken is always juicy and delicious
and the rack of lamb is to die for. If you are lucky enough to eat there when venison is on the menu, you are in for a real treat.

I am shocked seeing some of the past posts about this gem of a restuarant. I was to this restaurant for business (took the president of my company!) and I was so enchanted by how it would be for a date I told my boyfriend we had to go back. While I was impressed with the service and delectable taste of the food on my business dinner this restaurant really shines for a date. The service is seriously second to none in my recent dealings around houston and the food is just wonderful. Flavorful, fresh, innovative. The wine list is exceptional in my opinion and the waitstaff were very knowledgeable on their wines. Don't knock it till you try it, you will be very pleased.

We heard such wonderful things from everyone, it must have been an off night. I ordered venison and it was so tough it was like overcooked liver, I ate 1 out of 5 medallions. My friend ordered the same and hers was much better! We ordered a second bottle of wine and since they had run out of the first type, they suggested a 'similar wine'. Thank god I asked how much it was before he uncorked it, it was twice as expensive. Not cool. We ordered something reasonable and it turned out to be sweet like juice, noone liked it. Should they have bad wine on the menu there, I think not!!

Pros: Beautiful Interior, Good Menu Selection

Cons: Dangerous Wine List, Inconsistent Quality

These guys put out some great food and the wine list is fun. Good for a date, not a place to hang for a beer. The mussels are good and we were happy with the chocolate dessert. Seems to be missing something without John Sheely around anymore...our waiter said he had moved on. Life goes on.

Pros: food

This is your typical nice resturant. The service was great, but the dishes weren't very imaginative. There was the typical steaks, fish, half a chicken, and pork chops that you would see at this class of restaurant. The salads and appetizers were quite interesting with a shrimp bisque and a great salad with granny smith apples. The sorbet for dessert was great. A very simple raspberry sorbet, but very full of flavor.

Pros: Salads, Appetizers, Atmosphere

Cons: , Price

Gone straight downhill both in terms of quality of food and wine. The wine "expert" suggested the most expensive wines to try (in the 60-70$ range) and started talking about the Pinot Noir content of a Zinfandel which I couldn't follow at all. Expensive and over rated.

What a disappointment! This restaurant has been one of my favorites, but last night's experience will be my last. The mussels, which have previously been a near orgasmic pleasure, were tough and tiny. The pork chop was served nearly raw the first time out, then dry as bone the second time out. When it was obvious my husband didn't like, they didn't even offer another plate. What has happened? New chef, new owner? Neither, just no sense of taste in how to treat good customers. Too bad.

While the decor looked great, the service was slow, inconsistent, and not very knowledgeable, the food overpriced, relatively uninspired, and bland. Desserts were fantastic, however, and focused on chocolate. Needs more flair, creativity, and quality in their dishes to justify the price.

maybe, it's me. i have hair. i'm athletic. i have a girlfriend who's 30.

mockingbird was once fringe cool, even with its highly outer-loop, comb-over crowd parking sporty mercedes and modified suburbans. but now, in the heat of spring/summer, i see sport jackets and anna nicole smith impressarios. is this really an urban restaurant in the spirit of chicago or new york or even denver?....

the food is better than average, but it's coasting downhill fast. for about the same price, i'll choose the culinary fireworks and diverse people watching of rouge or da marco, even with my auntie from 'the villages'.

Pros: close, neighborhood setting, some bold flavor

Cons: , confederate house, dentures/cosmetic etc

.

Mockingbird is a solid choice for business dinners, but I agree with others who proclaim it "overrated." I love the location, the understated but classy decor, and the well-priced wine list. But while my food has always been well-prepared at Mockingbird, it has never been particularly memorable or innovative. For the same money, I think you can do better elsewhere.

Pros: Wine list, Well-prepared food, Atmosphere

My husband and I have been to Mockingbird three times, first on our own, and after that because friends wanted to go. Personally I would not go back otherwise as the food sounds better on the menu than it tastes on the plate. The service is somewhat rushed. Nice atmosphere and good wine list makes up a little bit, but if food is mediocre, why go?

Cons: Small waiting area, Can be noisy

After reading some of the reviews, I was wondering....but no more. The service was wonderful and attentive, but not the least bit intrusive. The food was great and portions were perfect (contrary to other review notes). Wine list was good. The sommelier gave great advice and was wonderful about helping us choose some interesting dessert wines. Valet parking was convenient and complimentary, so I don't know why anyone would complain. Top-notch and we will definitely add it to our list of "regular" stops.

Staff went out of its way to seat us without reservations on a thurs night. The food was excellent, and the wine list was very affordable. Decor was very pleasant. Staff was friendly.

Good food and wine list plus a really nice restaurant. For the food the foie gras appetizer was excellent along with a nice caesar salad. Our entrees were also good including the veal bolognese and steak frites. The service was good. In general we had a good experience but I was not "wowed". Nothing was exceptional.
