Thomas is doing much better in math and is looking forward to Geometry this year. The study skills should also make his life (and mine) more enjoyable. The staff are all GREAT! They work well with Thomas and he really enjoys working with them. Give them a great kudos!!! : -)

Our daughters is now reading with no or little assistance from us. Before Sylvan she would need reassurance and ask what every other word was. She has improved from a second grade level to a fourth grade level reading and vocabulary. This school has made reading enjoyable for Savannah.

If she could my daughter would go to Sylan full time in place of school. She is enjoying reading and actually reads for the fun of reading. Her teachers have noticed her improvement. She is more confident and proud of her progress. The best part is that she does not feel like she is stupid.

My granddaughter could not read in 3rd grade. She went to Sylvan for a year.Today she is in 4th grade and is the 3 best reader in her class but the best in comprehension. Now she is attending Sylvan again for phonics. Sylvan has helped her in taking tests, confidence, and getting her interested in reading. She loves going to Sylvan and enjoys everyone there. It is the best place in the world for helping children. The best in the world! I have a niece who teaches college courses and she is a BELIEVER in Sylvan; it is the best one on one for kids. It has made a HUGE difference in my granddaughter.

It has done wonders for my 5th grader. He is much more focused on his work. His attitude and confidence have improved as well as his ability to do his work independently. I can't say enough positive things about Sylvan. The staff has been wonderful and very understanding and professional. Thanks again.

We are seeing progress in both my children that attend a Sylvan. The help they receive with homework support has been very helpful.

I just quit teaching at Sylvan because the center here in Sarasota, Florida is poorly managed and is truly disgraceful. They do not provide appropriate, or even thorough, training to its teachers. I have a Master's degree and have been teaching for 8 years; however, I understood that I needed to learn the "Sylvan Way." I came in and finished every training sessions that they scheduled for me. Unfortunately, at this particular center, most of the training materials were incomplete or missing altogether. For example, there was supposed to be a training manual to "teach" me about the Academic Writing program. I watched the video, but they did not have the manual. I informed then Assistant Director of Education and she said, "Oh it's missing." That was that. Also, according to their training plan, you're supposed to observe for an hour before you actually teach one of the Sylvan subjects. I was expecting to observe for an hour, but much to my surprise, I was on the schedule to teach a student in the Academic Writing program before I had read any of the manual or completed any observation.

Also, the management structure of this particular center here in Sarasota is extremely disorganized. I have never met the actual Center Director, not even once in the three months that I worked there. The Director of Education was never polite to me at all. She would barely greet me and spent most of the time in her office. The Assistant Director of Education, who was responsible for training me, never followed up to see if I had questions or concerns. She never looked over my training materials to see if I'd even finished them. No one knew my name. I was never introduced to the other teachers. No one was able to answer my questions. There seemed to be little, if no, communication between all these "directors." No one ever seemed to know what was going on.

In the short time that I was there, I noticed, and the teachers pointed out to me, that there were a lot of mistakes made with teaching materials and lesson plans. They have some young girls (maybe high school students) who pull all the materials for the teachers and they often pulled the wrong books. Also page numbers for exercises were often written down incorrectly so a teacher would spend time searching for the right exercise leaving all the students at the table waiting.

I want to make sure everyone reading this knows and understands that there is no way to ensure consistency among all branches of Sylvan. Also, I want to make sure that everyone reading this post understands that the Sarasota location is not really organized and there's a chance that your child may not receive the quality of help that you really deserve.

That said, I wish all parents the best of luck.
