I was slightly surprised to see such horrible reviews of this place. I mean, yeah, the service is generally a little slow and/or unfriendly, and yes, you have to wait. However, how is this different from any other trendy spot in Manhattan?
I'm don't live right in NYC (I'm more upstate), but I come to the city a lot, and every time, we try to make a stop at Serendipity. It's very old world and unique, and the experience and food is worth it. They're known for their desserts, but even their dinners are delicious. I've had the vegetable tortellini, the chicken potpie, and the lime chicken, all of which have been amazingly good. For desserts, my favorite in the Strawberry Fields sundae because it includes an entire piece of their heavenly cheesecake in the bowl! Also, the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate is to die for.
Bottom line: Expect the hostess to be a little rude. They are, afterall, at the demand of a lot of inpatient customers who are just as rude back to them. If you smile at them, they'll smile back. Go here for the atmosphere and a good time with guilt-free desserts. Expect to wait more than an hour or two, so put your name in two hours before you actually want to eat, and then go explore the awesome neighborhood this place is in. You won't be disappointed if you don't expect everything to be absolutely perfect.
Pros: Great food, amazing desserts, a great experience
Cons: Service can be slow, but who's in a rush here?
