Eclectic, diverse, fun, worker-friendly, unique

by Joshua B. | insider Insider | Rank: 15,431

There is no other restaurant like Colors--the menu is hard to pin down, but very diverse, a combination of world cultures. Colors was founded by former restaurant workers from the World Trade Center, and is one of the only (the only?) worker-owned restaurants in the city. But that's not the only reason to go there--the menu is always changing, and there's pretty much always room, even without reservations. Starters like tapas or ginger pumpkin soup run about $9, main courses (like crispy roasted Brazilian lime chicken) about $20, and desserts (including something called citrus panna cotta) also about $9. The menu has been shrinking a little over time, but it's still an adventure, the service is good, the wine list is extensive, and it's good to know the people on staff actually have benefits (now there's a novel concept). The decor is quasi-deco (sort of), but fun, and the booths have a good sense of privacy. Definitely worth it.
