Right on the Powell St. Cable car line, so easy access to the Warf. Right in the heart of the shopping district, a very cool area and an old and majestic hotel. The lobby is breathtaking. A good spot all in all.

I had the opportunity to stay here for a day and it was truly a wonderful experience. The service is great and the rooms have a beautiful view overlooking the Union square. On the Christmas eve, the hotel was beautifully decorated with a huge cake castle in the lobby. The in house bar has a great ambiance and food was pretty good.

It's always a toss-up where to stay in San Francisco but the St. Francis is one of my preferred choices. You can take a wonderful evening stroll after work, enjoy a number of restaurants within the area and, if you prefer not to walk, take the cable car. A cable car stop is located right outside the hotel. Also they have some of the most beautiful suites in the city. Also there are chandeliers - yes, chandeliers. This hotel is older compared to other hotels in San Francisco.
At my first stay, the room that I initially booked was too small. The management took care of this immediately. They had no problems upgrading me to a suite instantly and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. The views of the city below is spectacular. The decor is a bit boring. The look of the lobby and rooms seems uninspired (in a "stately" kind of way), but certainly, this is not a "boutique" designer hotel, so it doesn't make that much of a difference.

The company I worked for has their annual Score and Five
luncheon here - the room the luncheon is in overlooks
Union Square - Beautiful - the service is excellent - the
food is excellent - the desserts are wonderful - I really
enjoy this wonderful treat.

I have stayed in a lot of hotels in SF, and was leery when my friend booked this place for a deal on price line. The crowds in Union Square are really hard to get through if you want some peace. When we got to the room, there was a dirty tray still outside it and when I asked the cleaning people to remove it, they told me it was still there because the hotel had made major staff cutbacks. Not a good sign! The bedding was good, but the heating system ramped on and off all night long and I did not have earplugs. The place was quiet though and so easy to get a cab. For the $145 we paid, I would recommend, but not aesthetically

The regal beauty of this hotel is hard to beat. I love staying here - the location, the rooms, the staff, the food are all top notch. Stay here for a taste of old world San Francisco!

This hotel is full of class. The rooms are impecable. The staff is VERY friendly and the hotel itself is just amazing. I've stayed here for a bachelorette party once where we had a suite. That was an amazing treat! I'd definately stay here again.

I often stayed here when in San Francisco. The location is perfect. Right on Union Square and the trolley line. Walking distance to many of the sights and shops you'll want to visit. Luxurious, good food, nice place to have a drink. You can't go wrong here.

The Westin St. Francis Hotel resides over San Francisco's Union Square. Having survived the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, the St. Francis is one of the most elegant hotels in the City. The rooms are spacious and tastefully designed. You can choose accommodations in either the historic building or the more contemporary tower building -- many with city views. The St. Francis offers the fabulous Michael Mina Restaurant, a spa, superior service and more. With front door access to one of San Francisco's three cable car lines and a few minutes walk from BART and MUNI -- you are minutes from anywhere in the City. Being located on Union Square, your shopping options are endless and many clubs, restaurants and all the quirky things that make San Francisco what it is, are at your feet.
Enjoy classic luxury in the heart of America's most beautiful city. Stay at the Westin St. Francis.

Stayed 1 night on corporate rate at the Westin St Francis. I did not manage to get the new tower side as it was fully booked due to some convention taking place. It's a great hotel but if any of you are looking to save some $$ then book it at SweetHotelDeals.us They usually have some pretty good deals on there!

I pretty much heart this place! This is where we got married last June. The views from the top floor are unparallel! We rented the entire 33rd floor...both Victors and the Alexandria Room. Between the gorgeous decor, amazing sunset, and gorgeous city views, the space was absolutely magestic! The food was not your typical 'hotel wedding' meal. Everything was done so beautifully, and tasted amazing. Fantastic service throughout the entire evening and the honeymoon suites were awesome!! I wanted to move in permanently :)
Service is great. It is one of the nice Westin property that we have stayed. It is in a great location overlooking the union square & closer to shopping & other activities
I loved this hotel. My boyfriend and I stayed at the St. Francis for a little weekend getaway. The location is perfect to get to anywhere in the city. The building is gorgeous, with so much history. When we check in they gave us a complimentary upgrade to a double room with a large window that opened in the new tower. Modern, clean room. The service was excellent. They were always happy to help with directions, etc. Would definitely stay there the next time we go to San Fran.
Pros: Service, building, location.
Cons: None
I had stayed at this hotel many times before looking it up on 'citysearch' and I was so disappointed to see how many terrible reviews it recieved. Every single time I come to San Francisco I make a point to stay at this hotel. I have not stayed in the older part of the hotel recently but I never had a problem with cleanliness. The rooms in the taller newer towers are modern but very warm and comfortable (Waterford bed linens feel pretty amazing after a long day) and the lobby looks straight out of a movie scene, especially during Christmas. When I last visited there was construction at the 'Compass Rose' bar downstairs. That was the only downfall. I will say that the parking is very expensive, but I never had a problem with a long wait. Why don't you call ahead of time if it takes so long? Bottom line, this is a great hotel. The best location (especially if you want to shop for clothes).
Pros: Location, Setting, Beautiful Lobby
Cons: Expensive Parking
Good location but a bit dated. If you like modern or newly decorated hotels, then this is not for you. The hotel has a very friendly vibe, with the turn of the century style. You can almost picture people used to come to the front of the hotel with horse carriages. Unfortunately, it also smells like it's from the turn of the century and scared my husband a bit. We stayed there for a birthday getaway for my hubby and tried Michael Mina which was simply amazing!!! If you make reservation for dinner at Michael Mina, you must reserve a room because by the end of the meal, you just want to roll upstairs because you can't do anything else!!!
Pros: Good location, great restaurant in the hotel!!!
Cons: Dated hotel
An unwarranted snootiness by hotel employees and a below average guest room force me to never stay here again. Cabs outside hotel won't take less than a $20 fare, my room smelled like wet dog and had paint chips literally falling off the wall. Bathrooms are smaller than my first apartment bathroom. Spa was nice, food was good.
Pros: Food and Spa were good.
Cons: Hotel staff is unhelpful, room was small and I am a Starwood Gold Member
If you are thinking of having a conference there, DON'T!! They have the worst service ever and the hotel is not well equipped. Staff members are rude and obnoxious. We had a multi day conference there and some staff members denied our guests to use the phones in business center to make local calls. There are so many other hotels in the area that are business friendly.
Pros: location
Cons: service, amenity
I've stayed here a few times on business. The rooms in the tower building are what you expect of a Westin: modern, large and nicely furnished. The rooms in the main building are old, small and very unappealing. The biggest plus of the tower building is that the rooms don't have doors to adjoining rooms making them very quiet and peaceful for a business trip. The internet and the gym were very extra and pretty expensive. The hotel was always crowded with tourists. With all the choices, you can find a better hotel in Union Square.
Pros: good location, tower building room, very nice
Cons: expensive extras, main building room
Location is terrific ! Old tower had original charm with perfect view of Union Square. Staff was very friendly. We even received a free upgrade. Loved the wireless internet ! Dual shower head with powerfull pressure for a terrific shower experience. Newspaper every morning. Great atmosphere for a decent cost. It is one of the oldest hotels in town. Good restaurants walking distance. Sears Fine Foods for breakfast or the Oak Room. We couldn't ask for more. They accomodate kids and babies.
Pros: location & view, shower & kid friendly, worth the $$$
Cons: not for the cheap, bar is boring
We are SPG members and stay at the Westin hotels all over the place. Usually, we do not experience any problems with the staff or the services. However, at the Westin St. Francis, we had the WORST experience! They couldn't get the reservation straight and tried to deny that we made a reservation when we had a confirmation print-out in our hands!!! And words can't describe adequately how rude the front desk staff and even the management. Perhaps they think that we are merely "one" customer and how they treat this one customer will not affect their business as a whole??? Well, I hope many travelers out there read this comment and take it very seriously. PLEASE do NOT stay at the Westin St. Francis! It is in good location but we will NEVER return to and we will tell all our friends and family also never to stay there.
Pros: location
Cons: front desk staff, incompetence staff, rude management
First impressions were tainted with a 30 minute wait to get into the garage. Front desk staff seemed helpful enough but the concierge gave the wrong address to a very popular restaurant that cost an extra $10 in cab fare to correct. Service in the lobby bar was absent even though there were at least three staff talking with each other about what they had planned for the weekend. Room service screwed up a very basic request and we finally gave up and cancelled the order. On the good side, this hotel is well located and we experienced a very clean and comfortable room, even in the "old" part of the hotel. I am a frequent user of Westin properties, and will probably continue to use the brand, but this hotel is off the list because of the sevice standards.
Pros: Location, Facility
Cons: , Service, Service
The hotel was fantastic. I have no idea what the other rater is talking about, unless he didn't know that every fine hotel charges for local calls.....the lobby bar was great fun, ballroom style dancing, great drinks, and good security to keep the homeless of SF out. I felt like a VIP all weekend.
Pros: Decor, Bar, Service
Average hotel in an excellent location (if you like to shop). Staff was OK. At the end there was a discrepency on our bill and we disputed. The front desk was VERY RUDE. Didn't have time to argue b/c we had to catch a plane. Rooms are very noisy. Could hear horns/buses throughout the night. Fitness center was good. Service in the bar was awful. If I came back to SF I'd try my luck with another hotel. Concierge was very nice. They bought us an appetizer at a local restaurant one night.
Pros: location, concierge desk
Cons: front desk, service, noise
If you find a deal, stay at the Westin St. Francis. It is most beautiful inside and out. The lobby boasts a number of fabulous shops to wander through & the lounge is a delightful place to rest your feet and enjoy a martini and good music.
The rooms, ours had 2 queen beds, are huge and boast a pretty good view! We didn't get to stay in the older part of the hotel, but staying up on the 17 floor, we had an awsome time riding up and down the elevators. Overall, the hotel was wonderful, not to mention in a great central location! I would stay here again and again!! Thanks for a wonderful
Pros: Beautiful Rooms, cool elevator ride, wonderful staff
The Westin St. Francis is perhaps the best located hotel in all of San Francisco. It looks directly out into Union Square. But from there, it goes downhill. The rooms are very old, a little stale, and small. The service is above average and if you are a shopper you will love its location . . . but you can find a lot more for less elsewhere in the City.
Pros: location, location
Cons: old, small rooms, stale
rooms are very noisy (thin windows- you hear all street noise) some rooms smell extremely bad especially in the "historic" building. The amount of air freshener they spray to cover it makes it acually hard to breathe. The concierge gave aweful recommendations and did so rudely (this website is 100x more useful). The front desk line is always 10+ minutes. And the so called heavenly bed?? How about bacteria bed?? They don't wash their comforters unless they have spots on them - not even between guests!! (i asked) how sickening is that?? also, no HBO and basically nothing on the room service menu. no high speed internet.
i switched to the marriott mid-stay... much quieter rooms, concierges that care, **much** more friendly staff, HBO, high speed internet, drinks & appitizers in the concierge lounge (for platinum members, etc.). i like my starwood points, but im not gonna suffer for them!
Pros: starwood points, nice decor in some rm, shower heads
Cons: dont wash comforters, tv & room service, concierge & front des
I know, Christmas was nearly one year ago. However, I believe better late than never. I stayed at the St. Francis during Christmas 2001 with my beloved German Shepherd dog, Samson. Not only was Samson popular with the other guests, the hotel staff was kind to him.
I must mention the new beds. I slept in the lap of absolute luxury during my four-night stay. In addition, the staff was efficient, attentive, and pleasant. My only complaint is to the parking garage. The staff kept me waiting for my car for more than 30 minutes when I attempted to check out. I would have been left waiting indefinitely, but had the temerity to ask what was taking so long. They were unaware that I needed service. Hopefully, the wrinkles have been pressed out. Overall, my stay was such a memorable and pleasant experience, I plan to return Christmas 2002.
Pros: Lovely, lovely beds, great housekeeping, allows pets
Cons: Inattentive garage
With a parking fee of $40 a night I would expect my car in under 15 minutes. Unfortunately we were there for three night had 3 cars and never had a wait under 23 minutes for our cars. The longest wait was an hour.
Pros: great view from tower
Cons: Parking, unacceptable
I've stayed at a few hotels in the city, and I'd say that this one wasn't the best. The beds were comfy, the service was fair (nothing TOO great), cleaning crew was good, but I guess I expected a lot of this one. I hear a lot about this being one of the best hotels in the city, it's nice, but nothing is too great about it. I honestly preferred "The Palace" a lot better than this one. Some rooms here are also said to be haunted (in the first hotel) The doorman didn't seem to be very nice himself. If oyu go in the second hotel, get on the elevator, you could see a GREAT view of the city from here as well. Esp at night! I expected more for the amount that I spent, btu I got more for my money @ The Palace.
Pros: good view
Cons: Overpriced
I stayed at this hotel with the "love of my life".....it is a very user friendly and romantic hotel! Loved everything about it....especially the Compass Rose
Pros: heart of union sq., great lobby bar, fun spot
Cons: bad parking
First room was too small and way too dirty, so I switched to a bigger dirty room. My room service orders were incorrect all three times that I ordered. My TV barely got reception.
The bed was very comfortable and the GM did respond to my complaints with an apology, but not sure I'll give them another shot.
Pros: Location, Beds
Cons: Everything else
