Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
Northern Italian cuisine and attentive service encourage well-tailored diners to put down their leather binders, set aside their reading glasses, and order another glass of the house red. As at its fancier siblings Remi and Bice, here Italian specialties, including individual pizzas and homemade pastas like chitarra and cavatelli, shine. But, in a nod to Italy's Mediterranean neighbor, there's also a paella alla Valenciana on the menu. Options for carb-counters range from several types of salads to osso busco and burgers (fries are extra, though).

Key Points

  • Open 7 Days A Week
  • After Work Drinks
  • Lunch & Dinner

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Milanese servers will happily suggest a bottle from the "wine wall," as well as wish you a "buon appetito."
  2. Outdoor Seating - Teenagers photographing themselves hanging off of Robert Indiana's famous "LOVE" sculpture are visible from, but not annoyingly close to, the tables at the sidewalk cafe.
  3. Lunch Spot - Financial and publishing gossip bounces off the mirrored walls during lunch and happy hour; some locals and office workers even join the tourists for dinner.

Great Italian Food and People

by barry thurston

We all know there are literally thousands of Italian restaurants in NYC but few have all the qualities of Bistro Milano. We just came back from another visit to the city and tried this restaurant for the first time. It was so good we ate 2 dinners and 1 lunch there in 5 days! The manager Enrico greeted us at the door and within minutes made us feel like old friends. The service is great with the friendliest people in town. The menu has lots of variety and we tried soups, salads, pasta, pizza and fish and all were outstanding. Everything is homemade and fresh. We had a salmon dinner with mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus which was as good as we've ever had. What flavors!! It's in a great location(near everything) with reasonable prices. We like it so much I have e-mailed all my out of town friends to make sure they try it when they're in NY. I highly recommend Bistro Milano. Go there and ask for Enrico and you'll feel right at home! Ciao!

Pros: food,service,people,location and prices

Cons: we live in california!!

From start to finish, this place is amazing!

by ClaudiaVilla

I promised the owners I would write a review ending last year, but with a baby, things get complicated... however I never forgot and now I?m doing it.

This was a wonderful gastronomic experience for both my husband and myself on our second honeymoon.

We were impressed with everything in this place, the friendly service, personal attendance by owners, marvelous food, even the bathrooms smelled nice (something not often found).

Sometimes you go out and the place is nice but something is off, the service is not quite good, or just something was not quite ok to make it perfect... I?ll say, having traveled abroad quite often, and having a lot of places to compare... Bistro Milano was a delightful find, from coat check, to the final check, every single detail was well observed and we had a wonderful time.

The ossobucco with risotto my husband had, is still lingering in his mind, it was that good. Spectacular wine; wonderfully attentive, helpful and knowing waiter. My veal scalop was to die for. Truly a great place to have beautiful memories made. We are from Mexico, when back in NY, will definitely visit this place again. many thanks for a lovely memorable time. Perfect altogether !!

Pros: everything

Cons: none found

All around excellent

by yippee1999

First off, this site shows the restaurant as being on 6th Ave. Maybe that was a FORMER location? As of March 2009, they are located on 55th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues....

I ate here for my first time, and everything was excellent. We started with an appetizer of proscuitto with melon and a balsamic vinegar sauce. The appetizer was certainly sufficient for two to share, but a bit pricey IMHO at $18.

I got the ravioli stuffed with veal in a mushroom and truffle sauce. It was scrumptious.

My friend got the penne in a cream sauce with salmon. Also very good.

For dessert we got the warm chocolate cake with hazelnut gelato. As a dessert connoisseur I can say both the chocolate and gelato were of excellend quality.

I'd definitely go back here.

Pros: food quality

Cons: some dishes a bit pricey

it"s one of the few restaurants that I love

by fflockk

I've loved everything I've eaten here. It's one of the few restaurants that I love that I feel it is a little too expensive for what you get. But then again, that's my problem not that theirs.

Pros: food,service,everything

Amazing pasta, excellent service

by giullipet

I had dinner with my boyfriend in the beautiful outside patio, and ordered a bottle of wine suggested from a very kind waiter.
The bread comes warmed w/ sun dried tomatoes and eggplant sauce which is very tasty and a true tickle to your taste buds. The salads were unpretentious and tasty, greens and the other ingredients tossed in light dressings very appropriate for summer. We had different appetizers, the eggplant and zucchini parmigiana was just amazing as the tuna tartare too.About the maincourses the veal chop milanese was so big that i had to share with my boyfriend, the pasta is very fresh, my boyfriend had the tortelloni Bistro',soo tasty, filled with cheese and vegetables in a pumpink saffron sauce.....sooo goood
This we followed with desserts; the homemade tiramisu, an amazing chocolate souffle!
Nobody tried to serve our check until we asked for it, and that is a BIG plus in NY, we truly enjoyed our time and wine, the staff is very professional and friendly. You can dress up, or go casual in this midtown new restaurant!
Thank you Bistro Milano, now you're my favourite restaurant in NYC..

See you soon...

Pros: Pasta, service

Deceitful service

by BYEBUY5

Ever go to a place you read about with rave reviews and happen to be a New Yorker who tries lots of restaurants and then get treated worst than iHop? Yes, this is the place. On an early Friday night before the crowd came we had appetizer's that were flavorable, but small, you know three bites. No problem, standard at Manhattan. We ordered a bottle of chianti for the four of us, my wife and two college grad daughters, still good. Then we ordered. The waitress and help were friendly enough. However, after waiting close to one hour, our orders came out. Then my daughter, who also ordered the same signature Sea Bass dish I ordered detected a very fishy and frozen taste. After sampling it I found out it was bad salmon disguised under a creme sauce! Get this, when I told the waitress, she immediately said they ran out of the sea bass and asked if we would like something else. She tried to pass this junk onto us to see if we would notice! What gall! No apology which I did not expect since she just blew it off like no problem. I demanded she take it away since it was stinking up the table. Oh, as expected, no further mention of it just waited another 20 minutes for my dish since I gave mine to my daughter. Bottom line I think was that we mentioned Restaurant week and they treated us like peasants! I love Remi's but this place does not compare at all. Let's see how long this one will last.

Pros: Appetizers, wine selection

Cons: Decietful service

Best Sea Bass and Lasagna EVER!

by restaurantlover1

This new authentic italian restaurant is delicious!! I had the freshest Sea Bass that I ever tasted. As an appetizer, we had an order of lasagna - it is so light and flavorful. However, everything sounded great on the menu!! The service is outstanding, there is a great selection of wines, and the decor is clean and modern. It's everything you are looking for in a restaurant, WHAT A GREAT FIND!

Great find!!

by foodfan08

We are first-time diners - we just walked in by chance, and what a great find. This place has a warm, friendly atmosphere and a great staff. The bartender was cheerful and all the staff seemed to want to make us feel at home. We had a truely Milanese dinner, the pounded and breaded Veal Chop was tender and tasty, and the Osso Bucco was just out of this world. Just like in Milan!! This is not one of those "Italian American" places but the real thing. The manager, Carlo, is from Milan; and he shared with us the interesting history of the Bice family, who own this restaurant and many others around the world. Great food, ambiance and staff - We will be back!!

Pros: Great value and authentic Milan flavor

Great new place in the heart of midtown

by bostonbob

Great new place in the heart of midtown. The restaurant and the staff are stylish and provide good service. The crowd is mid-20's to late 30's. We came for just cocktails, and a comfortable atmosphere. We ended up having one of their tasty pizza's, and risotto, both of which I would highly recommend. The waiter helped us choose a nice full bodied red wine that complimented the food perfectly. The service is great and the Milanese manager on duty is not too shabby either. All in all a great new addition to midtown.

Great New Italian with Fabulous Food & Service

by jsp424

I went to Bistro Milano with some friends after work for a quick cocktail...we ended up with us having such a great time we stayed for dinner! The bartender was great and so was the rest of the staff. They were all extremely friendly and attentive. We ordered a pizza at the bar with goat cheese and veggies which was excellent. For dinner we split some appetizers. I highly suggest the tuna tartar and baked egglpant, they were both delicious. I had the beet salad as well which was one of the best. We then split the pasta with mushrooms and truffles and the satueed salmon for dinner as well as teh seabass. Everything was delicious. I would definitely recommend trying this place.

Pros: great food, service and atmosphere
