My oldest son (close to 5 now) joined Miss Mary's a couple years ago, and my youngest son (little over 1) joined soon after he was born. Miss Mary and her team recognize and embrace the differences in both boys and foster their individual growth, each full of confidence and completely comfortable with themselves. Her and her team also guide the boys to understand and act with a wonderful sense of morals and values. Through this, Miss Mary gives them the gift of a great sense of community and sharing. Few daycares focus this much necessary attention on life lessons.
Beyond the life lessons, Miss Mary prepares them academically for school. I felt relieved and excited when I recently attended kindergarten orientation for my oldest son. He knows all the required basics - his alphabet, numbers, shapes, colors. He expresses an interest in reading. He loves projects! He attempts and almost succeeds at writing his name. All this as a result of the play-based learning techniques that Miss Mary and her team use on a daily basis.
I highly recommend this unique and absolutely fabulous environment to any parent!!!

Although Kaluna Day Care appears to be a wholesome, fun and clean environment at a great price, Ms. Kaluna is the most unprofessional business person Ive been unfortunate enough to deal with. She is rarely truthful about anything she has to say and changes her mind over a weekend. Be aware of the "my miss just resigned/ my miss is going on a vacation" routine that she gives pathologically to get out of work she has been paid to do. She is incapable of having an honest discussion about what her concerns are and will boot your child with little to no notice. I dread to think how well she takes care of the kids if this is how she treats adults! Definitely a bad influence on your lo.

See below for my original posting. Fast forward to today. My daughter has now been with Miss Mary for 2 years, and I have a second child who has been there for 7 months (since he was 3 months old.)

Our daughter still loves going to daycare everyday. She talks about her friends, the projects, and the games that they place each day. She is speaking in both English and Spanish, can count, knows her letters and corresponding sounds - she learns so much there everyday without it being a structured "school" environment (it's very play-based.)

My son loves going, too! He gets so excited when he sees Miss Mary and the ladies. I have no doubts about sending him there each day while I work - I know that he's being cared for by an extended family that truly loves him.

I feel so lucky to have found Kaluna Family Daycare - it takes the stress out of going to work each day knowing that my children are loved and cared for.
***********
My daughter, who started with Mary at 10 months, just adores it. She never had any transition time (loved it there from day 1), loves all of her friends, and now at 14 months she can't wait to show me what she's done during the day. We'd been signing at home, but Mary and the ladies (Maria and Fanny) really got her signing, and now she signs all the time.

The space is small, but lovely... it just seems very calming, and I love that the children get to go for walks outside.

I recommend Mary to everyone I speak to about child care - we're so so happy with the care that our daughter is receiving.

Hi there!Just wanted to give a shout out for our beloved daycare, Kaluna Family Daycarein Culver City. Sadly, we had to stop going to Miss Mary's daycare due to the economic downturn and our jobs being impacted. Every day I wish our son could go back and he talks about his daycare buddies all the time. Our son went to Miss Mary's from 5months until he was 2yo.Mary Kaluna (owner) is such a caringsoul. She was formerly a kindergarten teacher and boy does it show! At our interview I remember being so impressed when she mentioned how she's "so into textures!" - our son brought home the coolest crafts, he learned to share, he played well with his friends and he learned so much at school. Every time I dropped in I was always amazed at how calm the kids were. I have a hard enough timekeeping calm with our one! I wish she offered parenting classes... but that's another story! As soon as you pull up in front of Miss Mary's house and walk through the gate, you enter a little private world of calm, reassuring delight. You'll forget about your work day and meetings and stress and just marvel in your little onesadventures of the day. In my eyes, it's a slice of Heaven for our son and Miss Mary is God's gift to children. I never once worried about the care he received from Miss Mary or her awesome staff. In fact, most days he wasn't ready to go home and wanted to stay longer.Generations of kids have been raised by Miss Mary. Go check her out so you canfind out why!

I carefully looked for the right part-time daycare for my now 14 MO daughter, I am a stay-home-mom, so I really need daycare only for her to interact with other kids while I do something else, not interested in full-time. Kaluna looked like the perfect place: clean, organized, friendly, happy well-behaved kids, nice friendly personnel. So I talked to Mary several times, being honest to her about my need of part time only and she understood, we agreed for a date to start. A few days before, she called me and told me we had to wait, that she had more kids then she was supposed to have and that by June we could begin. It was a few months later than I wanted. But it worked out fine, I had to take a long trip and by June everything would be right for us. But I still kept looking and found a toddler program in another place, that begins at 18 months of age. I enrolled my daughter there, but still had 4 months free and still needed someone to take care of my daughter two days a week. So I called Mary again, I told her I would need her daycare services part time for only a few weeks and she agreed, we took our 14 MO one week for two days, then I left for a trip and my husband was in charge (Mary knew about this trip of mine). She called home the Saturday I wasn't home and after only a week of using her daycare, telling us one of her misses just resigned and that she can no longer take care of my daughter. Again, I was away and she knew, so all this happened while I wasn't home. My husband had to go on Monday and pick up all my daughter's belongings after just one week. I called Miss Mary the next Tuesday when I got back, she told me the miss is not resigning but going on vacation, but she cannot take care of my daughter any way. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am, I had all this projects planned that I can't work on because Mary decided to change her mind the last minute. I think her attitude is very unprofessional. I think Mary was never interested in a part-time deal, just was unable to say 'no' from the beginning.

Kaluna Family Daycare is a wonderful place for children 3 and under to thrive! My granddaughter is 10 months old and is so excited every morning she is dropped off.
This is more than daycare. The children go out on nature walks every day. They are read to and are taught the alphabet and numbers and colors, etc. Every day there is a different theme and it's taught throughout the day. Ms. Mary Kaluna has a warm and caring staff that greet the children with BIG smiles and hugs.
Very clean and well organized. I have three grown children who were in daycare and I've never experienced a place like this before.

I was happy to find a day care facility so close to my home but after a few weeks, my 15 month old was kicked out. He was biting children, he was only 15 months and teething. Yes, this is a serious situation, so I did some research and found that this is a very normal developmental phase in some children, and they need to work through it with a caretaker who is knowledgeable enough to know this. I was given the weekend to find care for my child. Since then, I have found care with loving individuals that have studied child behavior and development and he is biting less and less. Kaluna is a fine facility, but if you want more than a sitter, I suggest you keep looking.

This is a wonderful daycare program operated by Ms. Mary Kaluna out of her home, the back portion of which she has converted into a wonderful space for children 3 years old and under. Our two older daughters had wonderful experiences there and we now have our third daughter there as well. The fee is reasonable as high quality programs are difficult to find. Drop offs are as early as 7:00am and pickups are by 5:30pm. Ms. Mary has a wonderful, warm, and gentle manner as do the ladies who work with her. VERY clean and well-organized.
