I guess it all depends on which mechanic you get, but I had tires and an alignment done. My car came back with 3 of the 4 wheels scratched and gouged. To top it off, they didn't tighten the bolts when doing the alignment and my wheel fell limp and I lost steering control. Luckily, it didn't cause an accident. When I complained, they admitted to it and turned it over to their "insurance company" (i.e. Sears headquarters) who then promptly denied any responsbility for anything.
I have NEVER seen such an incompetent shop!
Pros: Cheap, convenient hours
Cons: Dangerously inept clods
