Do NOT have this place look over a car you are about to buy if they are friends with the seller. I did, and I sorely regret it.

Frank's convinced me to buy a car I normally would not buy, charged me a fortune and left me with expensive unfinished repairs. I feel like a sucker.

A private party advertised a 1992 Honda Accord for $1,700. The person recommended Frank, his friend and mechanic, for the inspection after I test drove the car. I was uncertain about the car because none of the four windows worked. I should have turned it down immediately.

Frank said the car had a normal oil leak and he could cheaply fix all of the windows, so it was ok to buy it. Two of the windows only needed to be *lubricated.* Frank emphasized the seller is a wonderful friend of his, and I was getting a great deal.

After paying $100 for parts and $600 for Frank's estimates and repairs, two of the windows stopped working within a week. Frank then said none of the windows were covered by warranty, and I actually needed to install a regulator for one of the windows he had previously said he could *lubricate.*

I really did not look over this car closely enough. Within one week, I had to also scrounge through junk yards to replace parts like the front turn signal light, rear view mirror, dome light, air conditioning knob, clock and even the rod to hold up the hood! I will also be spending hundreds to fix the windows Frank had worked on. And Frank mentioned I would need to replace the bad muffler later. So I really paid close to $3,000 for this car.

If someone is selling you a car, and says only Frank can look at it, do NOT do it. RUN!

This happened 11-30-2010 and from last year), I am sorry that I have mistrusted the bussiness and Frank. I replaced my valve cover gasket and changed the transmission fluid yesterday at this business, this morning, I checked it with my own eyes, found out they put half quart motor oil more in the engine. I took to the oil changers in Berkeley asked them to suck it out. To my dismay, the transmission fluid is also 2 quarts over. I called frank, he simply denied it by saying that his employees don't do things like that. I am very disappointed. I will never let them touch my car anymore!!! I changed my engine there last year, first he said $1800(2000 corolla), and later on, after he already took off the old engine, he called me saying: $2300 since he will put several new parts in it. At this point, I have no choice but accepted the price. What a dishonest man! He said it's a very good engine with very low millage. After I drove 30k miles, oil getting low (that??s the reason I changed the engine) again, I brought it back, he said pcv valve needs to be changed charged more than $100. Said they found no leak. I brought to another mechanic he found a lot of leak on the bottom of engine, I called frank, he said he doesn't think so. Yesterday I brought the car to them, now they found out the leak & changed the gasket & changed transmission oil charged me $250, so expensive. If the engine is so new, why the gasket needs to be changed? Frank charges too much, and the employees he hired are so careless!!!(If not purposely)
When I was in oil changers a few weeks ago, they recommended me to change transmission oil, I asked Frank, he said I don??t need to change it, it??s still good, but yesterday, he said I need to change it, how can I trust a guy like that? I took the car to them several times, they didn??t find the leak, it was so obvious, it tells you how careless this place is, when a customer wants to check for oil leak, they should at least look around the engine, apparently they didn??t bother to do just that at all, so lazy, only think about money, if I didn??t take the car to another mechanic, frank will never see the leak. Now I feel so regret I didn??t change the gasket in another mechanic where they charge way less, the reason I went to Frank was they are close to where I live, now I learned my lesson, I thought the extra money I pay is just for the convenience. if they can do good job, it??s worth it, but they cannot even do just that!!! So angry!!

I've known and done business with Frank ever since he opened his shop some thirty years ago. (I live half a block from it.) It should be noted that before Frank opened his garage there, a number of different auto-repair shops had come and gone for a decade, most lasting no more than a year.

There is not enough space here, I think, to recount how very many times Frank and his staff have treated me as if I were the Prince of Berkeley--unfailingly careful, thoughtful, and fair, even generous. His office walls are covered with testimonials and thank-you cards for his good work and kindness.

I always recommend Frank's as the one place in the Berkeley area that I personally know and trust.

In my opinion, Frank is not honest. I write this following multiple phone conversations with Frank over the last several weeks. He took the title of an older car registered to me and driven by my son for repairs owing. He did not file a lien sale as required by the state. The car ended up back on the street and the new owner drove it on an expired registration and racked up about $1,000 in red light tickets and parking fines until the car was impounded. Frank admitted taking the car and title but has refused to produce a bill of sale or any documentation that I need to clear my name from the title. Is this who you want to do business with?

I cannot speak highly enough of Frank's Engineering Clinic. I recently took my car in for an estimate to repair major body damage (both doors and the front and rear panels on the right side had to be repaired along with realignment work). Frank and his mechanic, Jeff, both looked at my car. They were professional, friendly, polite, and very knowledgeable. They do not just repair cars for a living: as a second-generation family business, they KNOW cars in and out and, because of that, were able to come up with a plan to repair my car to its original condition in the most cost-effective way. Their professionalism also inspired immense trust in their capabilities. Frank's estimate was significantly less than the first estimate that I received, so I immediately left a deposit and the car.

Six business days later, I got my car back. It is FLAWLESS. I am in awe of Frank and Jeff's workmanship and will enthusiastically recommend the Clinic to my family and friends. Hopefully I will not need body work on my car anytime soon, but I will definitely go back to Frank if I ever do, as well as for any car-related needs and questions. Thank you, Frank!
