Small but quaint spin on the traditional spanish tapas in Chicago. Nice size menu but also offers daily specials. The staff are very knowledgeable and pleasant.

First off, the tapas here are delicious. Everything we had to eat was excellent. A couple of things were a little weird though. I don't mind strong cocktails but when I'm paying 9 dollars for a drink I'd like it to taste like something other than straight mid-shelf booze. Also, my friends and I were dressed a little nicely, and the host kept asking us if we were going out for a "special occasion" or a "girls' night" which I thought was pretty annoying. The food was wonderful though, and I would probably rate it higher were it not for the off-putting service and drinks.

I went to Azucar when it first opened and was really impressed by the place. The tapas were really delicious--everything we tried we liked--and the staff was incredibly awesome. The host (perhaps owner?) was bustling around all night chatting with customers and even gave us (and himself!) a round of shots on the house. It was great! The bill was a little pricey (as tapas places can be) but worth it. I will be back.
