Where else can you find free-range chicken, organic fresh juice, or a slice of vegan chocolate cake at 4 a.m.? R. Thomas Deluxe Grill, open 24 hours every day of the week, brings the concept of healthy dining to a whole new level. We firmly believe in the philosophy, "you are what you eat," providing real food choices for both carnivores and vegetarians alike.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Colorful and cramped, this funky new-age diner is an eye-candy oasis along a perpetually snarled section of Peachtree. A comfortable all-weather patio--humid as a conservatory, but with plenty of fans--serves as the main dining area. It's decked out with windmills, lawn ornaments, putt-putt golf statuary and all sorts of plants. Service can be quirky, but is always friendly.

The Food
This modern all-hours diner offers fresh-squeezed juices, kefir, organic grains and sprouts, burgers, omelettes and a BLT. Also look for pasta dishes, stuffed potatoes, wings, and killer bloody marys made with sake. Breakfast dishes, quesadillas and sandwiches are where the kitchen shines. Though popular for lunch and weekend brunch, R. Thomas really comes alive after 11pm.

Key Points

  • Open daily 24 hours
  • Vegetarian/Carnivore Friendly
  • The Body Ecology Diet

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Try one of R. Thomas's many Yerba Mate tea drinks like the Blue Moon, soy and rice milk, maple, chamomile, lemongrass, peppermint and ginger.
  2. What to Eat - Try the Red Corn Potato Corn Chowder or breakfast, 24 hours a day.
  3. The Extras - No time to stop in for a sit down meal? Stop by select area Kroger's, Return 2 Eden, Sevananda and Atlanta Coffee Station for packaged R. Thomas items and entrees "to go."

R. Thomas Deluxe Grill is a rare gem

by elizabeth w. | insider Insider | Rank: 28,454

R. Thomas Deluxe Grill has a unique menu that is great for those trying to maintain better health through eating. They offer lots of different vegetables and grains along with you normal fare. I can't stop thinking about the delicious ice tea I had. I must go back.

Cool atmosphere

Limited menu. All organic and some vegan. Not a good place for late night dining if you need drunk hang over food. But fun to hang out because they serve alcohol late.

Not Worth It

by k3nn3th

It had been a while since I had visited R. Thomas. I was embarrassed when I recommended it for lunch with some co-workers.

First, $20 for lunch isn't reasonable when healthy food isn't as hard to get as it used to be, not to mention economic conditions. Secondly, the portions were minuscule -- ordered chips and salsa "crumbs n red stuff" and my salad might have had 3 leaves of lettuce (the saucer it was served on couldn't make it appear any larger). Finally, the food wasn't that tasty. My smoothie tasted watered down when compared to Arden's Garden and it was more expensive.

There just isn't an excuse for R. Thomas when there are other options. They need to adjust or they'll meet the fate of their neighbors.

Pros: Disappoiting

Cons: Price, Portions, Quality

Good food, recently gone downhill

by JosephV

Basically an old hippie restaurant, R Thomas Deluxe Grill has been a favorite of mine for a couple of years now. It has a great atmosphere, the building is cool, and it's almost like entertainment to watch the variety of people that enter and leave. I started going around when I became fully vegetarian two years ago, and am now vegan. I've consistently been able to bring family and friends who weren't as meat-unfriendly as I and seen them leave happy and full. There are really only a few places around you can get raw cashew nut cheese or cultured veggies and raw root vegetable salad, with a big smoothie of pear juice mixed with mango, dates, local organic bee pollen, and honey. How amazing does that sound?! Well, they have 30 juices and smoothies to choose from, and even just stopping in to get one is worth it, on a late night or whenever. Did you know it's open 23 or so hours a day?

However, recently R Thomas has reduced its portions AND raised its prices. This is coming straight from a person who works there. The quality has gone downhill somewhat in the last months, as well. Note, they have a few servers that are very experienced and have been there a long time. Don't be surprised by apathy. The kind of people that come into a 24-hour restaurant in the middle of Atlanta make life difficult for these people. Tip well, they deserve it, whether you know it or not. And the parking lot is terrible. At least they have plenty of it, though.

All that said, I'm planning on going this afternoon. It's still great, unique food and worth the traffic you'll endure on Peachtree.

Pros: One-of-a-kind dishes, great for vegans, vegetarians, and all

Cons: Sometimes bad service, recently reduced portions, parking

Rude Employee

by MikeHolland

I went to R Thomas to eat one afternoon and was waited on by a waiter named James. He was very rude and disrespectful to myself and everyone in my party. I would never in my life go to a place where the service was so poor and the waitstaff would be allowed to treat customers in such a rude way. Anyone going there should know that they aren't paying for the quality of food they are paying for the public humiliation of being treated badly by their employees.

I had to rate them one star since this wont allow me to give them zero, but really the service warrants no stars.

Pros: none

Cons: Horrible service and rude waiter

Bodacious Birds! Terrific Food!

by ivy1000

"Pay close attention to the unusual collection of parrots and other birds that reside in cages just outside the front door. Your eyes will behold a feast of colors from the wild decor that covers the entrance way. Your ears will be soothed by the pleasant sounds of water cascading from the fountain. The non-stop conversational hum that echos across the covered heated patio stems from the ever flowing parade of individuals from all walks of life who amble in through the door. You may be surprised by the simple table setting of card tables and plastic patio chairs, but don't let that stop you. People flock here for one thing, and one thing only: THE FABULOUS FOOD!! Yerba Mate tea, Edimame, the Thai bowl, corn-potato chowder, baked wings, various pastas, cashew cheese dip, Thai basil wraps, Portobello burger, fresh fruit smoothies/shakes, vegan cakes! If this starts you salivating, then head down Peachtree Road to your new home!"

Pros: Ample free parking, open late nights

Cons: plastic patio chairs low to the ground, small card tables

unique, great location, best juice in town, a little pricey

by BELYPS

I love the eccentric patio atmosphere - it's very different than any other restaurant in the area. The parking is free, it's 24 hours, the staff is friendly, and my service has always been good. I'm still confused as to why there are birds in cages at a restuarant (it seems like it would be a violation of health codes or something), but then again, they are only located outside of the front door, away from the seating area. Their menu caters to a wide variety of people including your meat-eaters, veggies, and vegans. All the meat is free-range and all of the food is organic. The story of how they 'came to be' on their menu is actually worth reading. Do try their juices - they are all fresh-squeezed! Occationally they will run out of some of the fruits/veggies used to squeeze the juice, but there are plenty of other juice choices on the menu. I would say their only downfall is pricing - it is a little more pricey than I expected, but I think the healthy food and environment is worth it. Overall, I definitely recommend dining there.

Pros: 24 hrs, free parking, atmosphere, friendly staff, healthy food

Cons: pricey

Great Late Night Hangout

by gregtreadway

I have spent many late nights at R. Thomas. It was open 24 hours before late night dining became fashionable. They were the first. Their food is solid and good; truly reliable. The atmosphere is funky and eclectic and a little cramped, but adds to the friendly feeling and vibe that the place gives off. The wait staff are courteous and can be as wild as some patrons. When you're at R. Thomas you feel like you're home and in a really relaxed environment. The patio as an ambiance that is also very unique and that outside quality puts you right in midtown with a great city feel. This is the best 24 hour place in the city.

I'm really trying to love this place.

by CbgetwnGrl

I have been here time and time again hoping I will find something on the menu I can come here for. The edamame has always been a little mushy, the veggie burger was as well. It's great that it is open 24 hours and that is usually the main reason I go here. The cluttered atmosphere is unique and I love it...however, considering the restaurant is known for organic entrees and vegetarian options, I really feel bad for toucan sam and friends that seem to have been in small cages outside for years now. Hopefully, PETA members don't come here for their vegetarian food. The value isn't all that great and maybe one day I will find something on the menu I can't live without, until then, I say average. The idea is cool, but I just simply don't feel it is all it is made up to be.

Pros: Patio, cluttered charming atmosphere, hours

Cons: food, poor birds, hiking mountain parking lot.

Fun Enviroment, Easy Access, Open 24 Hours

by crissyjean20

This place was very neat to expierence. It's very eacy to get to and parking is free. The food was good but it was a little pricey. I had a Bacon egg and Cheese Sandwich with a side of green beans and my total was $17.00. That was including the tip which is 20% but the food was still good. Great for vegetarians and children. Wide selection on their menu too! All in all it was really good I just wasn't happy with the price. Oh yeah if you have 5 guest or more they automatically put you on one ticket and they won't seperate it. So it was really frustrating to pay individually!

Pros: Great Food, Cool Atmosphere

Cons: Price and Customer Service

Very Delicious R's Wings

by gshorter

I had the opportunity to visit RJ Thomas for a lite dinner. My daughter and I shared the R's Wings. They were not what I expected at all. The wings were healthy, light and very good. They were grilled, and had a light sauce on them. The homemade bluecheese dressing was very delicious as well. Definatley worth visiting again.

An Atlanta Late Night Favorite

by mparks

This morning at 4am my wife and I decided to have breakfast at R Thomas. Even at this hour the staff were very friendly and provided top notch service. I had the veggie omlette with home fries my wife had the french toast. The food was fantastic...well prepared and timely. The best home fries I've ever eaten. The birds starting waking just as we were leaving around 6am.

Pros: 24 hour service, free parking, atmosphere, healthy food choices, good service

Cons: none

Great food, a little expensive

by sciporter

The food is a little more expensive than I was expecting, but the food is really good. I've only had the Thai Express bowl and the Down Home Bowl, but I have a feeling anything coming out of that kitchen would be delicious. First time I went service was horribly slow (but it was New Year's Eve), second time was a little slow, but very friendly. Their 9-grain dinner rolls are really good also, a little sweet. Overall I definitely recommend this place, especially to any vegans/vegetarians out there, because the menu caters to them very generously.

Pros: food, vegetarian selection, 24 hour

Cons: service a little slow, a little pricey

bleh.

by ack_ack

i've always given this restaurant credit for having healthy and tasty vegetarian food 24/7. service, however, is seriously lacking. we were in a group of seven. half of us got drinks promptly the other half did not get their drinks until AFTER the meal. We asked the server for the missing drinks when we got our food, and he apathetically answered "they haven't finished making them yet". no apology, no "i'll check on that", no nothing... bleeehhh.

Best place in town for a fun, funky meal any time of day or night. Food is excellent, service is solid, and you can't beat the atmosphere. Try the real yerba mate - it's worth the visit for that alone!

Pros: Spectacular atmosphere

Cons: A little pricey but worth it for the extras

Amazing Food

by dwallace3

My friend took me here to get something to eat and I have to admit, when I walked in the joint, I thought to myself....what an odd place. But once yousit down, you really start to enjoy the hippie vibe R. Thomas offer. The food is amazing. I ordered the chicken curry wrap...and it was so so so so good! The flavors mixed together perfectly, and it just mealted in my mouth as I ate it. I recommend this dish to anyone who visits R. Thomas. All the food on the menu looked great, so I am sure you will not be dissapointed with anything you order. You have to try R. Thomas - I know you'll love it!

Healthy Food, Good Service, Exotic Birds & Richard!

by jaymaygm

I live directly behind R. Thomas at Camden Brookwood, and go into this little piece of pardise once a week. Who needs the Rain Forrest, when we have R.Thomas. Healthy food, but burgers and chicken, if you must. Casual service, who cares, I'm an old hippie, who likes the casual service. If you are nice, Richard, the owner, will give you a personal tour of his wonderful bird collection. I always feel more healthy when I leave.

Pros: Healthy Food and Smoothies!

Cons: Patio is very hot this time of year!

The Best of Atlanta

by marisan

I've been going here for over a year now and they still impress and please my appetite and expectations like no other! From the amazing atmosphere which is calm and soothing on a weekday to crowded and crazy on Friday and Saturday nights, there is no place like R. Thomas. If you want to eat at the most incredible place in Atlanta (if not all of Georgia), go here immediately. No matter what you like to eat, no matter what time you have a craving, R. Thomas is always open!
To those who complain about the service time, you must understand that excellent food takes a little bit more time than drive-thru and perhaps you should dine with people who are more engaging than a napkin ring. [sort of joking about that last little bit...]

Pros: selection, price, atmosphere

Cons: it does get crazy on fri & sat nights [12am-3am]

I have been going to R thomas for a while and the last time I was There i noticed it is in dire need of some remodeling. The food is still good and healthy, but the serving I got was 50% smaller then what i usually get, And the cost has gone up. Great fresh squeezed juices!

not real veggie food - bad service

by jasonus

Waited 10 mintues before I ever got a drink, and thats just the beginning. every order took mad long to come out..,. I even cancelled desert due to the wai. there werent more than 5 people in the whole place- 10 PM Monday night... all the veggie food is cooked in the same pan/grills as the meat... To top it all off the stuck me with an 18% service charge, since we had 5 plus people ... I wouldnt have given them a cent over 10% if that...

Nature study

by galiteagazing

In a city of concrete, R. Thomas offers green respite in a tropical rainforest atmosphere. Here the shrieking of the cockatoos? R. Thomas himself, inventor(?) of the sake-based Bloody may greet you! "Be careful," he will warn you. The Bloodies are insidious & you won't even feel the kick til it sets in. See and be seen here, and hope the "reader" comes in to sell you a glimpse of your future. Alone(?) Never mind, delve into the latest underground newspaper, or just watch the beautiful people. You'll feel younger and healthier when you leave. This place has LONG been a favorite of mine.

Pros: Atmosphere, Food, Style

Cons: Speedy, not, Crowded, yes, Nearby traffic

Mouth watering and healthy!

by heatherkn13

Mouth watering health food. If you're not looking for red meat this is the place to go. The menu was quite large and filled with a variety of delectable dishes. I had the chicken sandwich and my boyfriend had the chicken piccata. It was the most tender and flavorful chicken I have ever eaten. A whole page of the menu is dedicated to health conscious side dishes from around the world. They have a large variety of juices, smoothies and teas. The authentic chai was to die for. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends and family.

Eat your veggies 24-7

by erinbehan_citysearch

The waiter with the circuitry board tattoo IS cute and nice. Beyond the charming staff, R. Thomas lands above most vegetarian options in the food department for its ingenuity and flavor. The vegetarian sloppy joe tastes better than the meaty original, promise! Of course, you can get good for you smoothies that load up on palate kicking ginger. As with so many of the restaurants on Peachtree, you can't help but choke from the car fumes rushing by you, but no place is perfect.
