I am, by no means, a Chicago style hotdog purist. But, I've done my research and have asked trusted Chicago transplants where to get their home-town dog here in Atlanta, and universally, they say Mike's Hot Dogs off Roswell Rd by Canton Cooks. I've had Mike's and indeed thought it was excellent.

That being said, I recently had my face rocked by a Chicago style dog at the newly transformed Young Augustine's (formally the Standard). Everything you'd expect -- the dog had a nice snap to it, the relish was that nuclear-color green, poppyseed bun was toasted -- you get the delicious picture. While the pork vindaloo and friend chicken are getting much of the press at Young Augustine's, those jonesin' for a Chi-town dog without the drive out past the perimeter, consider your search ended.

I used to like this place, but up until today, I have changed my mind. Service was just horrible, food not much better.

I went for lunch. Seeing very few patrons should of been been a hint.

First, no one took the time to great me as I entered the place. I was not sure if they were open or if they served lunch. Walk up to the bar, where the bartender said, ?? Why are you just standing there for? ??What are you waiting for?. That should been my second hint ??that this was not going to get any better.

I ordered the Angus burger with fries. Fries were cold, as they had been sitting around in the kitchen for a while. Burger was not bad. I had to hunt down the bartender/waitress. When I told her the fries were cold, she gave me the ??you are just the pain in my ass look?.

This is unfortunate, I used to like the joint, I supported this establishment during their crisis of the murder of their employee (who was just great in personality and service).

I will go elsewhere - Adios Standard

Pros: Good just for drinks with low expectations for Service

Cons: Bad Service, Food SubStandard

The Standard is great for lunch and is great for after-work drinks. Old gas station turned restaurant makes for a neat atmosphere. They have great burgers and fries, and great salads.

The Standard has quickly become one of my favorite Atlanta bars. Its comfortable, not pretentious, and always results in a few good conversations with the locals. The food is decent with the fried okra topping the list. You can have a beer and not break the bank and the service is super friendly and attentive.Only con I can think of, is I wish they had a light beer (e.g. Miller Lite, etc) on draft. Alas, the Peroni will have to do. Otherwise, one of my favorite bars to frequent of late.

If you sit at the bar the service is great. All of the bartenders are friendly, and make sure you get what you need. However, the floor service is really inconsistent... sometimes they are there, and other times they are not. The menu is nice... you aren't locked into the typical wings and burgers. i have had almost everything on the menu (I live across the street), but the grilled steak sandwich is tops on this menu. Tuesdays are nice, $5 get you a big cold pitcher of Standard suds. Outdoor seating is nice for days when the bar is packed. And there is a very cool little "glass" room that is nice for a group to use, with its very own flat screen. Some friends and I try and get that little room for Braves vs. Cubs games.

Despite some of the negative reviews this is a favorite lunchtime spot. The buffalo chicken quesadilla is very tasty. We have tried other items on their menu with no complaint. If you do not get there early enough then parking is very limited.

Pros: Convenient location to work

Cons: Not a lot of parking

Visited the Standard for the first time last night. Prices were around or a little above normal for this type of place. Amounst other things we ordered were two veggie burgers ($8.50 each) described as 'marinaded' and other such descriptions. They tasted like standard frozen shop versions, and were brought to us cold. When we sent them back there was no apology, and the exact same burgers were returned to us which had obviously just been nuked in the mirowave for a few minutes. If I'm paying $8.50 for a burger I like to think it's at least being grilled.

Waitress was competent but not as attentive as she could have been - people sitting around with empty glasses despite it being a slow night.

Probably wont be coming back here.

Pros: Nice decor

Cons: Food not hot

Despite the review in Creative Loafing, it was easy to get a seat at the Standard on a Thursday night... there were plenty at the bar, inside and on the many cool patio spots surrounding the old gas station. The decor was typical for the area so nothing startling there, but did a good job of conveying a relaxed, bar atmosphere. Service was prompt and courteous.. good with the recommendations too. The beer selection was solid and well priced (could use pitcher prices on the menu, however). The signature mini sliders were pretty good and at $5 were a great app. Similar cheap apps included hot boiled peanuts, pretzels and several more. The buffalo chicken quesadilla was unoriginal and rather dull. Not spicy, not special, not worth ordering. The steak sandwich however was fantastic! Perfectly marinated, and thinly sliced steak on a massive toasted roll that was absolutely delicious. The accompanying fries however were your typical food service variety steak fries - they definitely need to upgrade the fries.

The biggest drawback was the amount of smoke in the place. Almost every customer was smoking and in no particular area - instead they were seated everywhere: bar, tables, not outside though?! I don't mind a little smoke, it's a bar after all, but it kind of ruined the experience and took away from the quality of the food. The Standard should consider pushing off the 'smoking hour' until after 9pm or 10pm once most people have eaten.

All in all, a good experience - I would definitely recommend it for an inexpensive, casual night out in a great neighborhood bar.

Pros: Awesome steak sandwich, cool location, very casual

Cons: Way too smoky!! Lame chicken quesadilla and no hot sauce?!

This area between Cabbagetown & Grant Park, never ceases to amaze us. And another watering hole, with very good bites, and the funkiness that goes with this area, is born. It's in a coverted gas station, like it's sister restaurants Brake Pedal, etc. But is a step above, with some very good creative bites. At the top of the list, are the Cheeseburger Sliders. Just a couple of bites each, with White Cheddar, Lettuce, Tomatoes, and Onion, yes they do slide down easily with any of the craft-beers. And the Jack Daniels Flank Steak Sandwich is awfully tasty also. And they throw in a little Deli, with a Hot Patrami Reuben. And the Cornmeal Crusted Calamari with Jalapeno's and Sweet Asian Chili Sauce, is a great way to start off a good beer drinking session. The service is prompt, the quality of the food is above"Standard" and just good. A great addition to this intown 'hood!

Cons: Parking Can Be Tight!

Nice beer selection - well decorated - friendly staff and the food is decent. It's pretty much your typical bar food - rubens, cheese steaks etc. - but done very well... I highly recommend the chicken salad sandwich. They had a great curry chicken special in the spring -slow cooked with fall off the bone goodness. I can't wait for that to come back. For a quick and affordable lunch or dinner, the Standard is a nice goto.
