Please adopt from the Humane Society!
by Strife M.
I am not only a volunteer at this location, but I also give rather large donations for this location as well. The shelter director Dorothy Wissler is very discourteous and brash. On more than one occasion she had ran people off with her behavior, yelling at them for petting animals already outside of their cages in the safe arms of one of the volunteers. Of course after she blew up thinking these people took them out of the cages, she realized she was wrong. One couple did the right thing, after Dorothy yelled at them, then apologized, the wife wanted to take the two children home and go else were, but the Husband said it would be unfair to the animals if they were to leave and did what was right; They adopted two kittens that day. The one thing you think of when talking about any Humane Society is compassion, love and understanding, but this location is by far the worst I have seen in my life. To further dissect this location, the young girl at the sign in desk when you walk in is always either on facebook.com, or playing games and looks like she is sleeping all the time. She should be working considering she is getting paid to be there (can you say a waste of donated money?). Now this may disturb some people but its unfortunately the truth. Certain animals come in battered, abused and sometimes really poor condition, this obviously is not a secret, but they are left in that state until someone comes to take a look at them a week later. For example: If a dog or cat comes in bleeding, matted hair, or filled with fleas and skin irritation, do not leave them like that. I could not leave them like that for one more day, or one more second and had to bathe them and take things into my own hands on several occasions. Furthermore the people that come in the mornings for community service are mostly disgusting, some of them are okay, but others are vicious and should not be around animals, ever. If you do not love animals, please do not step foot in any of the Humane Societies. In closing, I am not discouraging you from coming in to adopt any animals, that would be unjustifiably wrong. I am just saying do not get discouraged from the attitude you may face while trying to save a life. And please, if any of you out there have any stories to tell about your experiences at this location please tell them. And lets all hope they find someone better then the eccentric Dorothy Wissler to take over the Etowah Valley Humane Society.

We came in contact with this organization when looking for a pet to adopt. Although I have not been on-site to see their facilities, they did seem very thorough when deciding if we would be a good family for adoption. They microchip the pets upon adoption and request that if you ever have to give your pet up, you give them first option.
