Sylvan Lake Resort

There is no doubt this is the best in the Black Hills. The most beautiful lake with huge rock formations, the best lodge fireplace in a beautiful lounge, and lodging for every taste (I would recommend one of the new lodge rooms, or a cabin with a fireplace). I spent every Labor Day here for 20 years, and was fortunate to work here in 1967. The Black Hills is the most beautiful spot on earth mile for mile, and this is the best of the Black Hills. Hike up to Harney Peak, or down Sunday Gulch with Sylvan Lake Lodge as your base, and come back for cocktails in the lounge before going into the dining room for some wild west cuisine. Enjoy the architecture - they don't build them this beautiful anymore.
