I went to this beach over 25 years ago as a child when my dad was stationed briefly at Newport. Now I have 4 kids of my own, and I thought, why not, let's swing by and see if it's still populated by crabs and critters and shells... "swing by" from NC, lol.

Lo and behold, the hermit crabs by the big rock are still there, and it's still a perfect place for kids to swim and explore. Even the dock is still there a little ways from the rock, and older kids can swim out to it and jump off.

Differences? The private club-- I don't remember that being there, but small children tend to ignore such things. Fewer shells. Many fewer shells. Perhaps that is a universal phenomenon.

And the public parking area, at least the one we used, was 20 dollars for the day. Worth the price, if you are toting lots of children and bags, IMO, but that might be prohibitive for some. If I lived in Rhode Island, I would have to find another way onto the beach.

Our day was foggy and cool, but my boys had a wonderful time catching and playing with hermit crabs. For me, it was sort of a coming full circle, and I loved it. Ironically, my girl wasn't too interested in being in cold water, and hunting crabs, but maybe next time, when it's warmer?

Have fun! Carpe Diem!

And please, do avoid taking 95 South (go the mountain route) for the return trip if you happen to live in my direction. That, friends, is the definition of HELL.
