I'm a local who's been away from Providence for the last few years. The last time I went to Zog I went with a friend's mom for coffee and it was pretty bad, but I was on Wickenden this past weekend with a few friends and they all said that

I am too an ex employee, and i didnt get fired either so exemployee2008 , you can shut up. And I now work for a country club in CT, so as for me not finding a better job you can shut up about that too thanks. and if it isnt as bad as you say it is .. then why are so many other CUSTOMERS saying the same thing every where else. And I know someone in the Sanitation dept in RI who will shut that place down soon.

Pros: nothing at all

Cons: everything

I worked at Cafe Zog too. I think you shouldn't say these nasty things just because you couldn't work there. At least Julio hired you where others I think would never hire you. His mistake is that he hires a lot of people from the street without checking them properly. He doesn't require them to be experiences and then when they screw up and leave they keep saying bad things.

I haven't seen flies over there as well as other stuff like that. Also food is always clean and fresh because Julio requires all the ingredients to be fresh and prepared just before you serve them.

Before saying bad things about someone, who gave you a job when the economy is so bad, try to find a job at other places. Then come back and say what you think about other employers. May be they just wouldn?t hire you because they think you?re not a good employee.

Good luck!

Bad reviews are coming from ex-employees NOT because we're "mad" because Julio Fonseca (owner of Zog and Geoff's Superlative Sandwiches) fired us, but because WE QUIT because it's nasty and he cheats us our rightful pay, and we only worked there in the first place because the economy is so bad we had no choice.

I worked at cafe zog and recently left. Yes I am a disgruntled ex-employee; because Julio (the owner) has "forgotten" to send my paycheck for a month now, despite repeated phone calls. I don't think I'm ever going to see that money - because he is a cheap semi-exploitative boss, and guess what, the quality of the food and service reflects that. The $4/slice pies are bought from some huge bulk megastore. Service takes so long because we're constantly running out of ingredients because instead of having them delivered in bulk, he sends workers to buy them from BJs.

The dishes are washed right inside the bathroom- which is smaller than many closets. Toilet and dish-washing sink, hand in hand.

There are m&%* (site won't let me write it -- they've got four legs and tails). Fl**s crawl over everything and instead of covering the pastries, Julio Fonseca sprays soapy water in the air above the fl**s.

Probably Julio gets away with all this because he is friends with half the providence police department, who come in every morning for breakfast. He whispered with one of them for 15 minutes and then the cop followed me into the bathroom (where I was, surprise, washing dishes) and told me he wanted to take pictures of me. When I accused Julio of trying to pimp me to his friends, he only laughed.

So yes, the service can be cranky. The turn-over rate is extraordinarily high - no surprise, for $7.40/hr - and the veteran staff are either naturally bitchy or just toughened by crappy working conditions.

Pros: bamboo in the back

Cons: see review. DON'T SHOP HERE.

This is a cute little place to just relax and get a cup of coffee. I usually just hang out and read or play cards with a friend. They also have a cute litle outdoor area, but unfortunately smokers have littered that area with ash and smoke.

Ok so I am a former employee of cafe zog, the place is as horrible as everyone says. I have also worked in the food industry for a while and was as well VERY disgusted by the way everything was done. its not up to any sanitation standards. I would like to explain the service. There are only two or if we're lucky 3 people working behind the counter. And when there's a big rush were obviously not going to be happy since we dont even have really stoves to cook on, only two skillets. And whats wastes our time more is when customers go up to the counter and stand there without having looked at the menu prior to coming up to order and it backs up the line and gets so many people get angry. By the way don't come in at 10:30 thinking you will get full service, the owner keeps us open longer than we really need to, so we really just want to close and be out of there by 11, since he gets mad if we stay too late since he'd have to pay us for "over time".

Now the cakes , yeah its from BJ's and its gross... so dont ask them to grab a piece.. we're just as disgusted that you want it. Half of us just really need the money ,we hate working there and the owner is very mean. the flies ...there really arent many ,you guys are over exaggerating. Obviously is the door is constantly opening and closing some are bound to come in. But , I'd like to ask anyone that can get in touch with the sanitation department ( this review wont allow me to use the word health instead of sanitation) to have them go in. That place really needs to get shut down .

His prices are ridiculous . So just DONT GO THERE!!!!! tell your friends and family... its an awful place and yes the espresso is FAKE! its french roast. The employees are treated poorly by the owner, we get misc. deductions from our pay that he doesnt explain.

Pros: nothing really...maybe the music

Cons: a lot of things

Seriously folks, trust the reviews here. The food is really expensive and tastes like old gym socks. The actual restaurant is dank and seriously lacking in decor. It is full of flies and probably rodents too, based on how clean it is. It is pretty clear that none of the employees care about their job. I've seen moldy pies on display, and from BJ's no less. Oh and a secret? The espresso isn't even espresso, its just a dark roast coffee. Can you say RIP OFF?! Avoid this place at all costs unless you want to feel ripped off and physically ill. Seriously, the wait at ANY OTHER PLACE is soooo worth it if it means not eating here.

First of all, let me start off by saying most of the employees that work there are unclean and
just straight rude. The flies are EVERYWHERE. And I mean EVERYWHERE.
The prices are never right and they are always over-charging. Not to mention that they charge 5 dollars for a slice
of cake that is bought from BJ's. They didn't practice proper food safty techniques, and their silverware is always dirty.
I should have never went back there for a second time, but I was willing to give it another chance.
The smoothies are just ice.
They also lie about their products as far as organics, soymilk, etc. But most importantly, IT ALL TASTES HORRIBLE!
Please, save your money and spend it elsewhere.

Pros: When I left.

Cons: The food/service/cleanliness

Okay, this place is NASTY!!! I've worked in the restaurant industry for many many years so I know good service, good food and good drinks when I see them. They don't make any of their own food and there are flies everywhere. The workers are rude and unfriendly and know nothing about the products.

The coffee is pretty awful, go to Coffee Exchange if you want a good drink! The smoothies are mostly ice. Oh and I think they get all the cakes and stuff from BJ's and just mark the prices up. LAME!!!

This place is a MUST AVOID!!!!!!

We walked into Cafe Zog and there was only one other table. We stood there and looked at the menu for about 10 minutes, then walked a few more feet and stood in front of the people taking orders and making food. We stood there for at least 20 minutes, without any greeting, or "We will be with you in a moment" or anything whatsoever. The two kids continued to talk about nothing, and not even look at us. Finally we walked out, very unsatisfied. then we went up the street to the Coffee Exchange, and got an immediate welcome, thankfully.
