I encourage all to read this letter I sent to Dr. Carrie Bagshaw after my dog suddenly died last week. This is NOT a place I would ever recommend for many of the reasons stated on Yelp and other reviews about price/service issues however that takes a second seat to the fact that competence, compassion and honesty are expected when trusting a vet or any professional.

    Dear Dr. Bagshaw,

I am writing this letter to you because I am extremely distraught by the events surrounding the death of my dog. I was shocked last week when Bertha was suddenly diagnosed with terminal cancer and died the same day, an occurrence I believe to be in part a result of your negligence.

You have treated Bertha for many years. Not once did you ever indicate to me that cancer was a possibility for her problems, even when you knew that she had sores that wouldn't heal and after I mentioned repeatedly over the past few months that she was not eating.

Six months ago I brought her to you in crisis when she was in a state of shock. The expensive tests and diagnostics you conducted were inconclusive; in fact, you admitted that you had no idea what was wrong with her and guessed that it might be a heart condition. You prescribed expensive medication even though you did not know the cause of her illness. (For all I know, this medication actually made her worse.)

Last week, when Bertha was presenting in the identical way, I took her to an emergency veterinary hospital. Within 15 minutes a vet who had never before seen Bertha determined via ultrasound that she had a massive tumor on her spleen. I cannot help but wonder what might have happened if you had performed a similar ultrasound six months ago and diagnosed Bertha properly. Perhaps she could have been treated had this been caught sooner. I believe this was a massive failure on your part.

To add insult to injury, after years of bringing my dog to your clinic I did not receive even a condolence letter. Every vet I saw on Bertha's last day--none of whom had met her before--sent a nice, heartfelt note. How much money did I spend with you and how many times have I been at your clinic? This coldness and callousness is not acceptable in a healthcare provider. I feel duped by you, both professionally and personally.

I am not writing this letter as a threat, and I do not have a lawsuit planned. I am writing this because I will take it upon myself to warn other pet owners to be aware of your level of care. I am going to commit myself to documenting online what happened to Bertha to try to save someone else from having to deal with such incompetence and the heartache that came as its result.

I spent a small fortune to ensure there would be no surprises with Bertha's health. While I don't expect miracles, I do expect competence and honesty. I received neither.

    Sincerely,

    MDorman

I spent way too much money on these people without getting an accurate diagnosis. A nearby hospital figured it out immediately

Dr. Nelson has been taking care of our kitties for over 15 years. She is very caring and gentle with our cats and very very knowledgeable. Whenever we've had a crisis with a kitty, she is the person we turn to and she has always worked her "magic"! After trying several veterinarians in West L.A., a friend recommended us to Dr. Nelson and her Santa Monica hospital (Yes, it was her practice before she joined VCA), and we've been so grateful she continues to practice in Santa Monica. Great to hear she now has a very good partner, but we and our kitties remain loyal to Dr. Nelson!

I have taken my two dogs (age 9 and 14) to Dr. Wallen for 8.5 years. She is the most honest, straightforward, caring medical practitioner I have ever encountered (and that includes 30 years of experience working with human physicians). I started with her at Carlson Animal Hospital, when she left for Santa Monica Dog and Cat Hospital, I followed because the other vet at Carlson was a pale comparison. Dr. Wallen has always provided me with an estimate for services before proceeding. Her office and veterinary staff have been respectful and professional; they recognize me and greet me by name. When one of my dogs had damaged her eye, Dr. Wallen gave me a referral to a specialist. When I was unhappy with the solution offered by that specialist and phoned Dr. Wallen in a panic, she calmed me down and "called in a favor" to get my dog an appointment with another eye specialist that afternoon. The prices at SM Dog and Cat have always seemed fair to me, particularly given the level of care and attention my animals and I received.

We began taking our dog here when she was a puppy - after a move to PA and then down to Huntington Beach, we still haven't come across anyone as kind and knowledgable as Dr. Wallen. We now drive 45 minutes just to see her!

We did, however, have a very unpleasant with Dr. Nelson one day when Wallen was not available. Nelson had an awful bedside manner, was rude to both me and my dog and finished my experience by clipping a blister on my dog's pad with no warning. When my dog yelped, she said, "Shh! That doesn't hurt!" Our dog has been afraid of the vet ever since. Dr. Wallen is very understanding and compassionate with our dog's new problems (which I STILL blame on that scary visit with Dr. Nelson.)

All in all - Wallen is the vet I recommend to all my friends. Nelson is so unpleasant I specifically tell people to stay away from her. The staff is kind and the vet techs are gentle. Keep with Dr. Wallen and you'll never disappointed.

Santa Monica Dog and Cat Hospital was recommended to me by a well respected retired vet, and they are FABULOUS! You will be treated like a human being and your pet will be treated with kindness and concern and respect. The prices are much more reasonable than any other westside vet, the Drs listen to you and are very thorough with your pet, and have a fabulous bedside manner, especially Dr. Wallen. This hospital saved my very sick young puppy when he had ingested an unknown substance that made him very ill, and they helped me keep my bills down because I was out of work at the time. Dr. Wallen even called to check on my puppy after hours! I have faith in these vets and would not go anywhere else. They are very knowledgable and kind, which is so refreshing after the nasty attitudes at VCA Wishire, where customers are treated like walking house payments, not people, and it's all about how much money they can siphon out of your credit cards or bank account.

YAY! for Drs. Wallen and Nelson!!!

Today I took my beloved doggie, a "senior" but lively, happy and always "smiling" Golden Retriever to the Santa Monica Dog & Cat Hospital at 2010 Broadway in Santa Monica.

After doing a lot of Internet research to select a new Veterinarian, I had found some very negative online patient/owners' reviews of other vet practices and then luckily happened upon the Santa Monica D & C Hospital. The staff was truly efficient, attentive and *on time* even for a late afternoon appointment.

When Dr. Wallen entered the room, she immediately won my doggie's heart and mine, with her "Earth Mother" warmth and immediate rapport with my canine wonder dog!

She took the time to check and re-check, explain and talk with me as a professional peer, all the while petting and soothing and reassuring my darling doggie pal. With all the blood and tissue samples of some lumps, and the dreaded *ack!* needles for vaccinations, my doggie was 100% relaxed, never made a peep, did not seem at all scared, and it all went smoothly.

I am very impressed with the intelligence and true caring that fills the room when Dr. Wallen is treating your furry family member!

At the end, the very nice staff of two at the front desk were very accommodating with assisting us to rest while the bill was prepared, and providing very courteously extra copies of Rabies certificates for renewing a Dog License. I could not be more confident that this is "The Right Place to Go for Old Fido!"

Thanks to all the "pros" at Santa Monica Dog & Cat Hospital. "We'll be Baaaarrrk!"

Took my adopted 2 month old kitty there. The service was fairly quick and they were friendly there. Since this was my kittens initial check up they checked her temperature, weighted her and looked for major injuries.

Seemed be a decent place but not sure what they are like with more serious things.

Dr. Lynn Nelson is an excellent veterinarian. She immediately caught a problem with my cat that the previous vet I used hadn't. It's a small hospital and the staff is good too.
