Matteo's is a nice break from some of the more formal sit-down restaurants in the Wailea area. You order your food at the counter when you enter the restaurant (mostly pizza, but some other casual options including salads), find a table and seat yourself, and then your food is served after it is prepared. You can order additional food/drinks from your server. Seating is indoor and outdoor on a large deck - choose the outdoor area if you can. Prices were pretty reasonable and the pizza was good. We debated how you tip in this kind of establishment - there is a tip line on the charge slip, but you haven't received any service when you order. There is also a cash tip jar on your way out.

We had read the reviews about Matteo's before traveling to Maui and were hoping for a good experience. The experience was far from good. Others have mentioned the counter ordering system, the numbers, and the rushed service. It all felt like a restaurant focused on churn and turnover, not a good dining experience. We ordered two pizzas, a bottle of chianti, and sodas for our two kids. I was surprised that led to a bill over $100. When the waitress came with the red wine, as she was placing the glasses on the table, she dumped more than 1/3rd of the bottle right in my lap. Ruined a new t-shirt I had purchased earlier that day in Kaanapali. My shorts were soaking, and I had stains down the front of my shirt. The waitress barely apologizes and claims its her first day on the job. OK, anyone who has worked in a restaurant has had a day like that. But, here's the kicker ... the manager never comes over to apologize, and they never offer to take anything off of the check. I've never heard of such a thing. What restaurant doesn't make some amends after a bonehead move like dumping a bottle of wine on a guest? When I finally walk up to the woman running the counter (I assume one of the owners), she offers to buy us a desert or a pizza. By this time, my kids are ready to leave, I want to try to salvage my shirt in the hotel laundry room, and I want to forget all about Matteo's. The pizza wasn't even that good ... soggy crust, flavorless sauce and some cheese imitator on the top. Do yourself a favor -- head to BJs in Lahaina or Bada Bing in Kihei. Better yet, go to Fred's in Kihei. Basic Mexican food, good margaritas, great view of the beach and the whales, and a friendly staff that knows good service.

Pros: Proximity to Wailea

Cons: Service, food, focus on turnover

This restaurant is located in my town and it shames me it is still in business. The food is terrible...canned tomatoe sauce that tastes like it was bought in bulk. Dirty...dirty...dirty. I guess that explains why they serve people without shoes. We ate there tonight to give it "another try" and two tables had guests not wearing shoes...nor did they bring shoes with them. That's how desparate they are for business. Save your time and money...go to Safeway buy a box on penne and some Prego...you'll thank me for it!!!!
