We had been here for drinks and appetizers, then went again to have dinner. Food was very good at typical New York City prices. We had good wait service and bar-tending.

City Grill has an upscale menu, white linens, and nice bar and occasionally a long line. Makes for a fun night out with friends and not too terribly expensive for a nice meal on the upper west side.

I lived in the UWS when I first moved to Manhattan, and City Grill was (and is) one of my absolute favorite restaurants. It isn't over-the-top at all; its rather refined and elegant, with just enough worn-in feeling to make it comfortable. I usually get the Hawaiian Chicken wrap (it also comes as a salad) or the salad w/ goat cheese. I know I've had other dishes, and they were all amazing!! City Grill also just puts forth the extra effort in terms of decor- they always have fresh flower arrangements on the mid-high wall that separates the bar from the seating area; they are always lovely and really enhance the atmosphere. The wait staff are friendly and attentive, and the enclosed indoor/outdoor seating area is really fun to sit in and has a lovely fan above. My fiance and I just really like this place; we consider it a staple when we're on the UWS!!! Highly recommended!!

Pros: Ambience, drinks are great, food is great and reasonable

Cons: NONE!

The over 35 crowd needs SOME place to go and sit at a nice bar and have a good time. The food is reliable and doesn't try to be overly inspiring, the bathrooms are eensy teensy, but the bar is beautiful, the dining room is lovely, the enclosed street eating is all that you want with street scene eating all year round, so the complaints have to be taken with somewhat of a grain of salt. I've been coming here on and off for 20 years and with each passing year, I'm always grateful it made it through.

Pros: It feels good and solid inside, not flightly and designer poofy

Cons: bathrooms tiny and near the kitchen

The Lady Friend had the audacity to show up looking a tad shoddy. Luckily City Grill is laidback so no one noticed or cared. (Full disclosure: I had a small hole in my pants.) We were seated immediately, and Leah came over shortly with menus and a wonderful disposition. We took our time in ordering and were not rushed. When the food did come, L(B)F shoveled down her chicken pot pie like an emaciated lumberjack. Her comment about the ccp was that it was ok. I had the lasagna which was also just ok. Though we agreed that both meals were average, I imagine that everything would be dependable in the long run as the menu has a wide variety of choices. There are better spots in the neighborhood but this is safe for someone who's looking for an unpretentious atmosphere and a lot of peas in their pie.

I was pretty apprehensive about going to the City Grill after having read previous reviews traching its service...however, clearly the managment has taken these comments to heart. I was very satisfied with the food, service, and prices...

A bar and restaurant with positive energy which is only drowned out by the staff's negative energy and poor treatment of customers. City Grill's bartenders, and even staff, forgot that they are in the service industry and are the servers. The staff needs to leave their attitude and negative imposition at home. Is it too much these days to hope to see a server with a very very little smile? I'm not even asking for minimal communication skills because this place is too far from getting it. You feel like you're there to serve them and you even get to pay them a tip to do so. What a deal. Oh yeah, and the food, it's inconsistent in quality and often overcooked. Nothing like chicken that's so dry on the ends that you have to cut it off. It's a shame that this place can't put it together.

I ate at City Grill for the first time last night. Walking by, it looked a little like a cheesy tourist place, but after I went inside I was pleasantly surprised to find a cozy deep red room with roses, fall foliage, and jack o lanterns. There was seasonal food like homemade applesauce and pumpkin soup. My father and I both had excellent food and the service was good. Not too expensive, either.

Once we were seated it took another 15 minutes for the waiter to appear. Once we ordered, it took at least 30 minutes to get our food, with our server no where in site...no updates on the food etc. Mind you, we ordered an appetizer for brunch. The server brought the appetizer with the entree and the entrees were cold. The food is good at a decent price but the service is horrible...granted our server was pleasant but cold food that took for ever is not good service.

We're impressed that our server genuinely cared about us, especially considering the rude, demanding diners around us. The same kind of people were near us other times there. Our waiter was honest about opinions of the menu items. My Tilapia/my husband's Hawaiin Salad were excellent, even with the changes we made. Another waiter was happy to get us more water while our waiter dealt with a woman throwing a fit that her coffee was "hot" but not "hot enough" and children who threw food and screamed for more juice every minute. I'm not sure how the staff stayed in such good spirits with the irrational demands being made by customers who seem oblivious to everything going on around them and who subsequently left 0 to 10% tips. If you like quality, inexpensive food and kind waiters, eat here. If you get annoyed by obnoxious people, you're better off dining elsewhere.

I think we waited about 15 minutes for water. Also, we didn't even seem to have a waiter for 30 mins despite having to get up and ask the maitre'd for some service! Then the food took another 40 mins. While this place has a diverse menu and is reliable for an easy inepensive meal, the service ruins it.

We've tried this place a few times because it always looks busy so we thought maybe we just had bad luck. After the third time, we realized it wasn't us. The food is bad and inconsistent. You will order the same thing as someone across from you but yours may be missing a significant side that should accompany it (happened twice) or try something one night and it's okay, the next time it's terrible. Service was rude as well. I don't know how the place used to be but it's bad now.

City Grill is a great place on the UWS that could appeal to everyone in your group. The menu has good standards, but also more interesting fare and specials, which should appeal to everyone from the burger crowd to the food snob. Service can be spotty sometimes, but that can happen anywhere. The wine list is also very reasonably priced. If you want a reliable UWS neighborhood restaurant, the City Grill is it.

We had lunch at City Grill on Saturday, and it was delicious. My husband had the Oriental Chicken Salad, which was fabulously addictive, and gigantic. We both kept eating it long after we were full. My Western omelette was more like a frittata, chock full of ingredients, and I loved it. Service was very attentive this time, an improvement over our last visit.

Walking around the westside this restaurant looked promising. Looks can be deceiving. The waiter seemed truly disinterested (he forgot to bring the bread basket and the wine was served after he delivered the entrees. The rolls -- one of which was truly a "sour" dough were tasteless. I ordered one of the specials-- barbecue chicken-- which had to be sent back to the kitchen because it was served uncooked. Did not bother to stay for dessert. Honestly, I suggest you don't stay for the main course either.

City Grill used to be my neighborhood favorite- to eat out at and order in from. The management and chef must have changed (even though the wait service says no). The last time I got a salad, I got taco garnishing for lettuce! And the turkey dinner was 100% fat, no meat!

Three of us went to the City Grill last night and first the not so pleasant...It took nearly 15 minutes for a waiter to acknowledge us. We had to complain to management before we could get service. Once we got our waiter, the service was horrible. The food on the other hand was straight forward good and won't break the bank.

Went there last week. Great fresh, hot food. Great presentation for the price. Good selection of dishes. Attentive staff, that didn't hassle. Good value. Some really nice entree's for $10 - $12. Good portions. Comforting decor and bar. Good neighbourhood vibe. Pleased all-round and going back tonight!

Visiting the Upper West side frequently, this restaurant quickly turned out to be a place we loved to go to. The menu was excellent, always with delicious specials, good prices and excellent service. Then new management took over; the menus changed, new cooks, and this place went from top notch to rock bottom. After our last and final visit, we received cold food and greasy veggies from what must be a novice cook. Although the staff is always super friendly, its a shame what has happened to this place!

My boyfriend and I dined here recently, and I absolutely loved the food! I ordered a grilled breast of chicken with mashed potatoes, and I couldn't get enough! My boyfriend had steak and his was very nice too. Serivce was pretty good, friendly waitress. Had to wait a little for a table, but it was only a few minutes wait. Overall, a good atmosphere and good prices.

This restaurant has a nice relaxed feel to it late at night. We went there one night after the ballet and it was nice to sit in the air-conditioned sidewalk section. Better than average burger and fries. There was a slightly annoying host but he settled down. The waitress was sleepy but accomodating.

I went here yesterday night with my best friend for the first time. We were sitted promptly and our waiter was very attentive. Our water glass was never half empty, answered all our questions, and came by many times to see if we needed anything. The menu had many selections for appetizers, salads, pastas, and main courses. I enjoyed the food very much and the portion was just right, not too small. My friend liked the music they were playing. I would definitely return.
