Lesson learned-get referrals and reviews. I was in a pinch and needed to have my computer working immediately. I called him and explained the problem. He came very quickly. Others in the past (whose name I wished I remembered) always began by telling me the plan and how they would diagnose and fix along with fee structure. Not Al. He came in and began working--did not appear to do diagnostics. Made what appeared to be wild guesses about the problem-blamed it on things like the mouse or downloads--but seemed speculating. I was surprised by how high the bill was but paid him. When he left I noted he had overcharged by one hour. When I informed him, he offered to refund or put in a CD/dvd burner instead. After hundreds spent the computer was still not working. He came back, installed the burners and fiddled with the computer. More hundreds spent. When he left the computer was still not working. He advised me to call RR to install a disc to access wireless. When the Roadrunner tech came, he said the computer was a mess and he could not install anything. Seems all the reviews and PR on the internet are by "Able Al". I have yet to use the computer. it has the exact problem it had originally-and it seems to be similar to the McAfree problem I have since read about. He will not refund anything. His solution was that I should bring in my computer and he would re-install widows-something I could have easily done myself or had it done for 10% of what he charged-even a kid could have done it.He denies that , saying that wouldn't have been possible without the cd player working. (actually the cd did work although it was cracked-the DVD burner did not work. ) I would avoid Able Al's if you want a working computer. If you want someone to spend hours doing things like cleaning the computer key board and making very presumptuous statements that appear to be prying, and if you don't care if your computer works, Able Al may be a good fit.

My computer was indicating that files were missing and Widows was going to close-which it did. Desperate to get things done that day, I called "Able Al's". He was at my place for a couple of hours, spent time on things like dusting the key pad, vacuuming the inside of the computer, wiping the screen, de-fragmenting (recently done by me), throwing out a mouse he said was not working. He did not seem to identify the problem or run diagnostics. Instead he seemed to speculate widely and do a lot of blaming-on obviously unrelated things-suggesting the problem could be do to illegal music downloads by my son (nope we have paid for each i-tune song he has) and the mouse and not having a working anti-virus programs (wrong). When he left I noticed that he billed me for an extra hour. He agreed to reimburse or offered to install a CD Reader/ DVD burner. When I told him we use USB memory sticks and did not need the burners he said the Cds and DVDs hold much more memory (not true). My plan was to ask him to send the over billed money back. But, when I went on the computer it was still not working. He agreed to come back --so I did not protest the installation of the burner/player-because it was clear that would have created a negative interchange-something I did not need-while I really needed the computer. When he came back, he did the installations but was taking a lot of time with the computer. I expressed concern about the time. In the end, he billed me for another few hours. After he left, the computer was still not working-hundreds of dollars later. Now when I try to use the computer it indicates that files are missing and Widows has to close-which it does. (Even I can guess it is a McAfree problem). His response is that he won't give a refund. He claims it was working fine when he was here-not true. He offers to re-format the hard drive if I bring it to him-exactly what I was trying to avoid and could have done myself from the beginning. He has refused to discuss the situation further and has programed his email system to send an automatic response to my emails intended to seek a resolution. Had he shown a more appropriate response, I would not be writing this review. No, I won't bring my computer to him to re-format. I am capable of doing that and he clearly isn't. He obviously doesn't know what he is doing. He has cost me in term of time, interfered with my work and created problems for my child who relies on the computer for school work. And I certainly could have purchased a working computer for what I paid him; something that would have been a lot more pleasant. I guess when you can't sustain a business through positive referrals, it makes sense to give your business a name that begins with "A". Desperate people go for the first listing. I have leaned a lot and will see him in small claims court. I will follow this review with another on a service related list site and with BBB.
