Bread is great, classic Italian food and an institution in Nolita. The tomato soup, lasagna bolognese, meatballs, and the chicken milanese are all outstanding!

You see BREAD delivery people constantly out on the roads on the sidewalks and riding the wrong direction.

Please know that these people are riding 30 or 40 pound restaurant owned bicycles WITH a large wooden box on the front with name BREAD on it.

What do you think this overweight bike with large wooden box would do if it hit say someone walking, or a dog or a baby stroller?

My guess is that there would be an ambulance involved and even though these cyclists are out there and the restaurant is aware of their riding they do not follow one single law. They simply side as fast as they can to where they need to be to get their delivery and their money and then blast back to the restaurant for another round.

I no longer patronlize establishments that have such disregard for public safety. Think of this the next time your walking and a cyclist passes you on the sidewalk.

Great food! that is the most important part of this restaurant. the atmosphere works really well for large groups and romantic dinners, although it can be a bit loud for talk :)

Ive been there a million times and the waiters have never been rude to me, however they can be a bit inattentive. also, fri and sat nights there is a long wait, but i highly recommend going for lunch, or dinner on the other days.

Unbelievable is the only word that can describe my horrible ordeal!!! We were told to wait half an hour for our table at the bar in the back of the restaurant which seemed like a great idea to avoid the crowd coming in. However, after waiting 45 minutes, the trio of ladies that came half an hour after us were given their table before my table for 3. After being confronted, the host told us that he was sorry that he forgot we were there! UNBELIEVABLE! After waiting a total of 1hr and 15mins, we were finally seated! The service was lackluster and my braised beef tasted like dried roast beef! Unless you like being ignored and eating mediocre food, I suggest avoiding this restaurant at all cost!!

I walked my puppy over to Bread for their amazing tomato bread soup, and the owner treated us to soup after my puppy played with his beautiful little girl - it was totally unexpected and charming, and the staff simply could not be nicer. This restaurant is neigborhoody and warm, and a great place to hang out and have excellent food. A+++

I love the meatballs at Bread. They are served with peas and potatoes (instead of boring spaghetti) and are delicious! The salads and soups are also very good and everything is served with their homeade bread. Since the restaurant is small, we usually have them deliver.

Bread! Its that simple. The food is great, the atmosphere is perfect any time of the day and the service is casual and always friendly (Yes, the waitresses are HOT).
I actually crave their soup and breads when I'm away. I recommend it to all my friends visiting NYC and they love it too! Its also pretty cool to be eating next to celebreties and rock legends. Very New York!

Bread, located in Soho, is a great place to grab a bite to eat in a very relaxed environment. I would highly recommend it locals and out-of-towners that don't want to eat at a tourist hot spot. The service is great, you can see that the owners are there on a daily basis creating a friendship with the crowd. If you are looking for a great, affordable meal then Bread is absolutely the place for you.

I've been here mant times and when I went here with a date recently, I had a wonderful time. Vibe was great (despite the fact that the waitstaff are beautiful, the service was great), music was amazing (what place plays Bill Withers and Pete Rock after one another), food came out promptly, and service was efficient. Price is extreamly reasonable. Be sure to get the lamb pasta and brie tartines when you go there. Experience will be more worth it if you go on a night when Laura (curly haired Latina gir) and Meeka (very pretty Asian bartender) are working; they vibe off of eachother and make the place the place that it is. I am proud to say I am a regular there.

i went here with my girlfriend for dinner, we (she) picked it randomly while we were walking down spring. it seemed a bit pseudo-intellectual from the outside and i was hesitant, but went in anyway. the crowd turned out to be quite mixed, which always appeals to me; it's easier to fit in because you don't have to. the food was excellent, i had some pasta with lamb ragout and we started with a meat, cheese and veg plate. everything was great. our waitress, ebba, a young swedish chick, was perfect and the manager for the night, whose name i won't say so she doesn't get in trouble for the drinks she gave us on the house (who is not one of the three owners, who are only there during lunchtime) was also very friendly. the only downside was the art exhibit that was happening, so people would stand next to our table and discuss the [not that great or particularly artistic] photograph hung by us. OTHER THAN THAT i recommend this place as little as possible ONLY because i don't want people finding out about it.

I had the worst experience here a couple weeks ago. Our table was neglected the entire time. We had to beg for more water and wine (you'd think they would want to keep our wine glasses full). After a bland dinner, we waited forever to receive our bill. My friends paid the tip in cash...20% even though she didn't deserve it. I charged my share and made sure to put a line through the tip area. When I checked my bank balance a couple days later, there was an extra $10 added to the charge! The crappy waitress took it upon herself to take money from me and give herself over 35% tip while doing so. I called the restaurant every day for over a week following and no one returned my call. Clearly they don't care about customer service or the fact that their employees steal from their customers. Stay away!

Worst Service. I have been in the industry for 8 years, traveled to parts of the world where service is at its worst and this place had such poor service i cant even believe it. I arrived early to reserve a table for 9. Fully aware that they didn't except reservations. I was prepared to wait an hour for a table. I got there at 9:15 and was not sat till 10:30. We then all sat at the table for 20 min before someone even approached us. We had to ask 3 people for menus. It was like pulling teeth getting someone to help us. We got are appetizers before our wine. We finished the wine in a few seconds. I told the waitress to have an extra bottle ready which she didn't do. We then waited for 20 min or her to come back. empty water glasses, used plates everywhere. Total disaster. Then as we all finally got are entrees she forgot 2 of my friends pastas. Didn't apologize or seem the least bit effected. We were completely neglected..... Since their was an auto grat we had no say in how much to leave for a tip. I literally had to get up from the table to hunt down a server 6 times. Worst, Worst, Worst...

Had dinner there on a Thursday night. Food was pretty good -- solid. BUT...It's funny that everyone is commenting on the rude italian host...i experienced him as well. Abrasive. And we did start getting an evil eye as we finished our wine. There are too many great place in nyc, don't waste your time! The staff just makes you feel unwelcome.

Bread is a great place to go if you're strapped on cash / time; food is great and the service is quite fast. I've had a few of their paninis and the sardines are my favorite. I have to say what got me hooked was the insanely attractive Asian bartender; I have never seen someone do their job as well as she does while entertaining the patrons at the same time. Would most def. go there and sit for hours when she's working. This would be a great place for a date.

Following a very unfortunate experience at a restaurant called Bread, on Spring Street and Elizabeth.

I was in on Thursday night with 2 friends. We sat at our table following the payment of our bill for about 20 minutes nursing our bottle of wine. The host at the restaurant approached us, asking us to leave and he then quickly walked away.

As I thought that action was quite inappropriate and rude, I approached to host and spoke my mind, saying that I just spent $200 dollars and it is not the right thing to ask my friends and I to leave. He told me in Italien to go F*** myself, thinking that I would not understand. When I told him that I knew what he was saying, he pushed me. Not only once, but twice.

It has taken me 4 days to get in touch with a manager or owner. I fannaly reached the manager today, who when I called, told me that he knew nothing of this, yet still accused me of the huge scar on the hosts hand. I was in utter disbelief and shock, to not only hear his accusation toward me, but to hear him say that the owner watched the whole thing and that I was the agreesor, and that the host never touched me. I am in shock. Yet, at the same time, after I mentioned writing to you, he offered me a full refund.

I sincerely hope that you get this story out to the public as this is no way to run an establishment.

Last night myself and 2 friends of mine had dinner at this place. We were having a great time until we were rudely told by the hostess to leave because our table was needed. There was no sincerity about this, he came over and bluntly said we need your table and you have to leave. With that being said, my girlfriend follows him to the back area and explains that what he just did was so very in appropriate. He turns around pokes her shoulder and in "italian" tell her F*K You! Are you gagging yet!!! because we were floored!!! She left her number for the manager to call her and now we are trying to resolve the issue. No one should ever be treated in this manner and for this guy to continue to be an employee of such a fine restuarant ruins our chances of ever going back!!!!!!

This place was a nice late night spot to get a quick dinner. The staff wasn't too attentive, but they did provide for some of the best mixed drinks around! The organic tomato soup was tremendous, as was the salad. A nice desert tray complimented an outstanding cup of coffee as well!! A must for a late night feast!

I was looking for a nice Italian place for a dinner for two for a Friday night, and remembered what great lunches I had at Bread. After reading reviews, though, I was worried I wouldn't be able to get in or that the service would be terrible. Neither of these were true. we walked in at 8:20 and were seated immediately. It was active, but not crowded. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest person, but she was helpful when choosing what to order and was attentive throughout the meal. We had the brie tartines (worth having, though it wasn't the best bread/cheese combination I've had here), and I had the lasagna bolognese (big serving, and quite good, though I wish I had split 2 dishes rather than having it to myself). The lighting was not too dark, and the music trendy but not too loud, so it would be a great place for a date.

It certainly seems possible that a trendy place like this would have arrogant or apathetic service people, but I haven't seen them yet. The bread and cheese dishes are excellent, and the ambiance ideal for a weekend dinner for 2-4.

Im going to stop referring to restaurants in Nolita as Restaurants all they seem to be lately are Social Hangouts with terrible portions and overpriced food with a good name for no reason.I have lived here for over a year and spend all my time going to other hoods for dinner.
Aside from Habana and Maybe 24 Prince they are all the same. From Ruby's to Bread.
Chock full of People who think they are New Yorkers without the slightest Idea of what a new yorker wants.

Bread was just the worst i have ever had.Went their with friends with average expectations and was more than disappointed.First of all when we finally sat down to order we spent 20 mins looking at their scant menu and decided. So of course we order it and they do not have it and are out of it..lol
No big deal it happens right? Wrong

THE NEXT TWO THINGS WE ORDERED THEY DID NOT HAVE ON THE MENU EITHER AFTER WE SPENT ANOTHER 5 MINS DECIDING..
You would think the waitress would be smart enough to tell us that as soon as we sat down or as soon as they did not have the first thing we ordered..NOPE

She was just a face and made no apology whatsoever and made it seem like it was our fault they did not have what we wanted. When i say the worst waitress i have had in years im not exaggerating in the slightest. So I made the safe choice and ordered a Bread Sandwich..
UM WOW My italian grandmother makes sandwiches that knock these out of the park.
So between that and my 8oz 4.00 coke that was WARM i had to leave this girla .75 cents tip because she sucked.im usually a 20% tipper no problem and i love great service and love wait staff with sparkling personalites who know that a tip is not just a given.

The place is just another trash hipster place posing as a restaurant. All 4 of us hated the food and thought it was garbage. You want some real italian??
Go to La Foccaceria on Macdougal they will knowck your socks off.

This place is for Jackkoffs who dont know they are jackoffs.

This is my first review on this site - I felt compelled to join after experiencing this strange place yesterday - never has my service been so poor and food so good. The shiitake mushroom and goat cheese sandwhich was simply wonderful, while waitress was totally rude. She was French, and for some reason had nothing but attitude for my girlfriend and I. I tried lightening the mood by speaking French with her (I'm fluent and my girlfriend is French) but she just seemed to be an unhappy person. *shrug*

bread is a big favorite of mine. their shrimp salad is incredible! so fresh and delicious: mesclun, jumbo grilled shrimp, avocado, italian olives, grape tomatoes - yum! it's just perfect. their freshly rolled mozzarella and grape tomato salad is great too. a delicious tomato soup. sinful ravioli. great wine that's really well-priced. yes it can loud, yes it can get a little crowded, but if you're up for a non-pretentious good time and good food - this is the place to be. a young eccentric crowd, very down to earth.

bread is a big favorite of mine. their shrimp salad is incredible! so fresh and delicious: mesclun, jumbo grilled shrimp, avocado, italian olives, grape tomatoes - yum! it's just perfect. their freshly rolled mozzarella and grape tomato salad is great too. a delicious tomato soup. sinful ravioli. great wine that's really well-priced. yes it can loud, yes it can get a little crowded, but if you're up for a non-pretentious good time and good food - this is the place to be. a young eccentric crowd, very down to earth.

Pros: salads, pasta, wine, ambiance, inexpensive

Cons: can get crowded, can get loud

.

Yes, the place is full of hip hotties. Yes, the food is pretty tasty and the ambiance is great. But why are the people who work here SO awful? They could care less about anything you might want and are way too busy socializing to even bother working!!! It's sad because if the staff here dropped the attitude this place would rock.

Pros: Good Food, Affordable, Great Space

Cons: Staff

.

Ambience = tile bathroom with funky art
Food = bland
service = slow
The owner decided that his personal IPOD jukebox was too quite and cranked up the VOLUME, when we asked the staff to turn it down they were waived away, when I asked him to turn it down, he turned it UP! He stated he'll pickup the check, it was his favorite song. I walked out. He handed the bill to my guests.

This place has great high quality comfort food and portions are big and inexpensive. Octopus salad, goat cheese w/ beats, braised beef were very nice. Small space, so very cramped and can get loud. They had some nice wine also.

Pros: good food, crowd watchin, inexpensive

Cons: small, loud

It's easy to walk past this small place, but the busy crowd waiting around on the weekends should give you a hint as to where it is! Excellent food, great value, very nice managers. Great for a date - not so great for groups, as it's pretty small. Go on a weekday and avoid the crowd!

This is one of my favorite spots in nyc. I've lived here for most of my life and know the city inside and out... watched it go through many ,many changes during my wilder, rawer nyc days... and still, this little place steals my heart. I adore the simple and warm yet hip Italian atmosphere and the staff are darling. Delicious comfort food, mostly Northern Italian. Easy and sweet.

As Little Italy (yes, not Nolita) continues to become more commercialized, I can still come home to this fab nyc original... when things were not so pretty but surely special.

This is a wonderful place to stop in for a light bite if your in the area. Excellent sandwiches and salad. Their nutella on bread dessert with fresh strawberries is to die for!!! Good location. It is always crowded. The management is not so great but the wait staff is polite.

My wife and I tried this restaurant on the recommendation from NY Metro, and it was just as they described. My wife had the sardine sandwich which is their speciality. It was wonderful, as well as they crusty bread they use. It is a great value.

This is definitely rank as my favorite restaurant. The best salad I've ever had, I can never get tired of their salads, the paninis are amazing, and the food is very consistent. Very friendly staff, and a lot of hip pretty people inside or outside. Fair price for the value.

The salads, sandwiches, soups, beverages, everything here is great! But it is ALWAYS crowded and cramped. Even when I try to order for delivery, they often tell me I'll have to wait an hour or more. So go at off-peak hours. It's totally worth it!

Bread is consistently good - soups, salads, paninis, and pastas are all reliable. It is simple, comforting Italian food that never disappoints.
