Have been going to this gym for 7 years, always pleased with hygiene... until I had to permanently relocate to the Greenwich Avenue loacation...saturday morning, 9am, decided to go for a swim...only to be confronted with Equinox employee giving a member friend some "job" under a towel on the bench by the pool. I thought it was really disrespectful. Equinox could do more about how it manages its employees...

Pros: Eyesore

Cons: Disrespectful to other members

i have been going to equinox since 2004. i like the teachers and the classes i take. my issue with equinox is the staff. the people at the front desk could not be bothered most of the time to be polite or smile. they sound uneducated. it's obvious they are untrained in customer service and how to address members. actually, what is sad is that these people do not know how to talk to people in general-is that how they talk to their friends and family? seems like they have no manners to begin with. this goes for the managers too-they tried to console me about a messed-up double-booked spin bike situation with a massage . the manger handled the situation horribly and i ended up leaving the class. after i complained, he gave me a complimentary massage. i was enraged when i went to get it and it was horrible-every other time i have gotten a deep tissue massage, there is deep pressure and i come out feeling different than how i went in. the masseuse i had, caroline with red hair, had long nails that dug into me and even when i told her i like deeper pressure, she said 'good to know' and didn't change anything. this was the last insult to all the complaints i have about this place. i think equinox needs to have training sessions on customer service-how to address customers, be professional, sound educated and not stupid, and know how to deal with mess-ups. i don't know anyone in life that deals with things the way these people deal with all situations. i guess there's a reason why people work the front desk or are managers at a fitness club and nothing more.

Pros: great instructors and classes

Cons: customer service, managers, front desk people

Some of the people in here wouldn't even know the difference if someone stole $500 from their bank account. If that's you, by all means pay the full initiation fee. But I've been a member of the Equinox at 59th and Lex. It was very nice - but I don't think it was worth paying $500 upfront and $130 per month, considering the I can pay $77 per month at the NYSC on Mercer Street downtown, with no initiation fee. Equinox is unquestionably a nicer gym, but not so much better to justify the cost differential. My concern is the quality, maintennance and variety of exercise equipment, and the size of the space. I get free towels too.

Cons: $$$

I disagree with the negative comments. I know alot of people who love Equinox. There's a reason why many celebrities work out there. They have so many different locations, and each one is unique. The staff is perky and super friendly. I've never met managers who would work out with you or care about what's going on in your life. I've been a member at other gyms like NYSC and David Barton's...none of them compare!

Pros: positive atmosphere, great staff, celebrity status clubs, immaculate facilities

Cons: more expensive than competitors (but u get what you pay for)

.

Yes, there are many locations and MOST of the gyms in general are in decent condition. However, they have become a victim of their own success. I have a bicoastal membership but the two most convenient locations for me are Soho and 59th and Lex. Unless you don't work normal hours like most people in the city, you will find that they have oversold memberships and the gyms are very, very crowded between 5:30pm and 8pm weekdays and most weekend mornings. I don't have a flexible work schedule and have found every session during these high traffic hours incredibly frustrating. You wait and you wait and you wait for the machines, its tough to get a decent workout - they gym is almost always 90% occupied. I have tried out other less convenient locations and still the same problem. Be sure to read the fine print, even though they are unable due to overcapacity to provide the service they have contracted to provide, they won't let you cancel your membership before one year is up!!! And my concerns just fell on deaf ears regarding overcapacity - their attitude is try to come during a less busy time! Like I don't work for a living! There are better gyms - I strongly recommend the LA Sports Club.

Pros: Lots of locations, generally well maintained

Cons: Overcrowded.

This is hands-down the best gym in NYC. Equinox on Greenwich is chalked full with hotties - which really gets me motivated to push myself to the limit. The club is also immaculate - it smells nice, no fungus in the lockeroom, and the machines, which are now a couple years old still look like they've never been sweat on. The assortment of equipments is fantastic. Also, for anyone who likes classes - they've got a ton (including a wide assortment of Yoga). But, this gym is worth joining for the Ab classes alone, which they have all the time. Regarding the COST, just wait to join until they run thier monthly special and you won't have to pay the ridiculous upfront fee, which truthfully, is quite exorbitant.

Pros: Cleanliness, Hot Crowd, Classes

Cons: Cost

I was totally ripped off at this club. Facilities are ok, but you can find the same quality anywhere in the city for less. Staff was obnoxious, and not only do they overcharge for membership, but then have the nerve to charge for many "extras" that should be included once inside the club. Not to mention the tons of advertising they clutered my mailbox with trying to sell me more services and products. To top it off, I canceled my membership and they kept billing my credit card anyway! Glad I left when I did.

Pros: Semi-Clean

Cons: Bad staff, overrated, overpriced

.

Ok, the facilities are great and best of all, they're clean. Unfortunately, that comes at a pretty steep price relative to what some other clubs are charging. I can't help but wonder if I'm being ripped off. I'll be the first to mention how much I'm paying: $135/month for access to all clubs. I waited for a special promotion so I paid 25% of the usual initiation fee. Is that what everyone else is paying?

This club has it all. Nice staff. Helpful managers. Knowledgable and in-shape instructors/trainers. Convenient locations. The place is clean and smells good (for a gym) and there is plenty of equipment for everyone not to have to wait in line. The kick-boxing class I took was amazing. I've never felt so super-charged in my life. And what I love most is noone seems to care what you are wearing, or what you look like while you excercise. People are serious here about health and fitness. The membership fee is a bit pricey but is it worth it? A resounding YES.

I've been to almost all of the gyms and although they're all beautiful, spacious and clean what really makes a great gym are the instructors. Spinning takes on a whole new meaning when classes are lead by MB Regan. MB is totally committed to her classes and transforms exercise into a show everytime!!! Her dancing, great music and light shows are the reason Equinox has sign ups 90 minutes before her classes. If she left, so would most of us!

Because of the friendly people and wonderful aesthetics, going to the gym is a little easier.

Pros: immaculately clean, great food/juice bar

Cons: close sauna too early

.

Staff is always pleasant and the facility is close to spotless- including the showers and sauna.
The classes could use a shake up but the instructors are all top notch- if they bring back Jon Giswold it will truly be the best bet out there- it is pricey but so is the neighborhood.

It's a very nice facility; however, when you factor in that you will be dramatically overcharged when you try to leave, the hidden cost rises, plus the poor quality of some of the staff, you might as well avoid it. The billing horror stories alone make this place a NO GO.

In order to stay fit, one must excercise. Equinox offers it all to the fitness-minded individual. This gym has got it all; great classes, instructors and trainers.

I toured most of the other gyms before joining this one and although a tad expensive, it really does have great facilities for the most part and offer great classes.

I thought nothing would get me to the gym. That's probably because there is nothing appealing about getting up early in the morning to spend my waking hours in a dark, sweaty room in unbearable pain. That is, until Equinox opened on Greenwich St. @ 12th. Open, airy and lots of NATURAL light are on the menu in this tasty house of super fitness. The place is so clean, you could probably eat off the floor, or at least if you drop your towel, you don't need to disinfect. Glamourous locker room and pool area, and a winning spa... The only disturbing thing is the Snapple and Yoo-Hoo for sale in the restaurant (what's all the working out for if you aren't rewarded with something fat and sugar free?). For healthier fare, try the 19th st. location. You might even run into Iman......

Cons: fluff food, inattentive front desk staff

The Equinox at 85th street has great classes and is always bright and clean. The majority of the instructors work hard to make their classes fun and productive. The air conditioning is not always strong enough, but other than that I have absolutely no complaints.

oh, i cant tell you how happy i am with the 19th and Broadway Equinox gym. No muscleheads like NYSC and the most beautiful women this side of Reebok Sports. I love the class selection and the industrial feel of the gym. Wish there were more nautilis machines, but very happy otherwise. Pay the extra fees.. the space alone will motivate you to look your best!

i worked with 3 trainers in 3 different locations including 84 street and 3 ave and the trainers did not take into considerations my goals or my past injurys i must say i was very disapointed in how poorly trained the trainers are and for the amount of money they charge i felt robbed. If you are looking for a cool place to work out then equinox is your place but if you are looking to work with trainers that should be the last place to go

How many other gyms can you actually get on the machines you want to without waiting in a line? Hardly any...If you are sick of waiting, come to Equinox. Get a work out in, head to the spa...hit the smoothie bar on your way out!

This locale has the greatest equipment and everything is new. What is REAL nice is the place is clean and spacious. One disadvantage is you have to remember which of the 4 floors has the next machine you wish to use. This gym is spread across 4 floors with huge windows overlooking the village. GREAT gym!

This gym is loaded with everything you coud want. If you're into stationary bikes, running mills, free weights, cardio classes and personal training then this is your place. I have been a member at this location since they have opened and have not regreted my decision yet. The staff is friendly and the facilities are new and clean. The crowd at this location is very unique and can vary during different hours of the day. Strongly recommend this location if you are serious about working out and getting in shape.
