Alma is a great place, anything with mole is mad awesome. The wait staff are super nice, really attentive, and makes you feel welcome, which is such a change from other places. A great place to bring visitors of NYC and a great place to hang for the local residents.

Pros: awesome plantain mole, heated deck, great view,

Cons: No drawbacks

If you're looking for an incredible view of Manhattan, look no farther than Alma. Especially wonderful on a summer evening, just before sunset, on the roofdeck. The food is excellent, flavorful but with a light touch. The guacamole is addictive.

I have been going to Alma since it opened, and I still eat there nearly once a month. I cannot fathom what some of the other reviewers have experienced since I have always received good service, and have enjoyed every meal I??ve ever eaten there.

Their menu is seasonal, with a lighter fare in the summer (try the fish tacos), and hearty meals in the winter. Some of their dishes (such as the chicken mole) are on the menu year-round, with good reason, they are great. Everything they do with pork is extremely tasty: the pork taco is pleasantly spicy and the pork stew (pozole) was amazing this past winter. I was sorry to see it removed from the summer menu.

They serve brunch on Sundays with an altogether different menu ?? it is not to be missed.

Yes, the wait can be long, but that is to be expected since the food it is worth the wait. Especially if the weather is good, plan to spend some time at the bar with the friendly and knowledgeable bartenders. Hands down, they make best margaritas I??ve had locally. The pool table and jukebox are free ?? so the time spent waiting passes very quickly.

Do not let all the negative reviews keep you away. Go to Alma and judge for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

a very disappointing evening. I ordered the charcoal grilled shrimp over hominy with wine, lime chili sauce. It was almost inedible. The shrimps were over cooked and tasted like they'd been marinated in dirty dishwater. I didn't taste any limes or wine in the sauce. It was dirty looking. Incredible unprofessional. I have no idea what they have going on in the kitchen but trust me its not worth the $100 you'll be spending on two entrees and 3 cocktails.

Looking for a nice meal at a reasonable price? Not here. Get this, two people, two entrees, gaucamole and three margaritas. $100.

Sent Anthony the owner an email the next day asking for an explanation.

He said "with all due respect" I should have said something to the waiter (in front of my date?) and that it was a reasonable price for two people. These were speciality drinks!

OK fine Anthony. Maybe you should spend more time at the restaurant then. The drinks were small, more ice than anything, and the entrees seems overcooked and bland.

Adios Alma.

Hang at the downstairs bar and wait for a table upstairs--it's worth the wait. The neuvo Mexican food is great, but it's the spectacular, roof-top view of Manhattan that makes Alma a must-go.

This is a wonderful Mexican restaurant in an area that doesn't really have a real estate designer name..it is close to Red Hook and Park Slope, but not exactly in either. Anyway. the Mexican food is great--try the guacamole--but the real draw is the unique rooftop dining. On a clear day, you can see the Statue of Liberty while sipping a margarita. Check it out!

FOOD: Terrible, overcooked under seasoned. This is 2008, get a REAL Chef. Oh, that's right, Last year you and your urban hillbilly co-owners FIRED one of the Cities BEST Mexican/Southwestern Chefs after just 4 days for reasons known only to the know-nothing, useless, dragon breathed Owner/Manager: Well, lets call him "A.C"
Yes, the Chef was my FORMER "companion" so I may be biased, but your place still SUX. Food, Service, Management... Not to mention, he told me that your kitchen (more like makeshift closet-kitchen) was FILTHY.
I just had to see for myself.
As for the "view" it would be great if not for the shabby, half built, half baked deck.
YUCK, YUCK, YUCK !

I have to say that this restaurant really does have one of the best atmospheres. It's located on a roofdeck, with beautiful views of the manhattan skyline, and it can be very romantic. It has the potential to be an amazing restaurant, except for the actual food. It had almost no taste, and the dishes were just boring. Even still, I still feel compelled to return every once in a while because of the atmosphere. I hope they spice up the food a bit, and change the menu around a bit.

I agree that Alma's isn't what it used to be. I've been going here for a few years and used to find the food really quite good. I was very dissapointed last time I was there. The view is still great, and I've always found the service to be pleasant, but the food isn't what it was. It's a shame because I used to really like this place. Although its still light years better than other mexican/texmex places in the neighborhood like Lobo, which is godawful.

AGree with the reviewer who had to wait 2 hours. That's not 'hip', that's just attitude. We went to Alma years ago, and had a great time (up on the roof). Though even then they brought the wrong food and we had to wait too long (Kitchen in the basement?) . Now it's just a joke. We went again with another couple, and had (approximately) the same experience -- waiting, waiting, no eye contact, no politeness, groups of people coming in (party of 4) and getting seated ahead of us. The food is cold, the staff is harried, the front of house people are not house-trained. Go to Fairway and get some takeout and sit on the patio and watch the sunset over the statue of liberty. At least you can choose your own food.

Right from our entrance into the downstairs bar, I knew this evening was going to be a top NY event! The drinks were very reasonable in the bar while we waited for our entire party to arrive. There were 9 of us total, and we didn't have reservations, and we were hoping to surprise our friend for her birthday. The seating staff was MOST accomidating, taking our cake (with no plating charge) in the back and allowing us to be seated before the birthday girl arrived. We were taken to the rooftop which is arguably the best view in the city and were immediately served delicious sangria (the best I've ever had) and chips and dip. Our waiter was VERY kind and delivered everything in a timely manner, even with our large party. The food was DELICIOUS. I had the shrimp dish and sampled the enchiladas and both were amazing. Then, to top the evening off, they presented our cake with candles and allowed us the option of cutting it ourselves or they said they'd be "happy to do it for us". I have rarely encountered such accomidation in New York. The pretty girl hosting upstairs was most kind to us, as was our host (possibly the manager?) and waiter. I highly recommend this place for large parties OR casual evenings out.

I wish I could put negative stars, because quite frankly this place doesn't even deserve that! From the very beginning you get told one thing by the staff but get extremely different results....Just so you know: an hour and a half wait for a table is in reality TWO PLUS HOURS (and we didn't even get seated upstairs for the "view"), the food isn't worth the high prices and the staff (our hostess and waitress excluded) were the RUDEST BUNCH OF PEOPLE TO EVER BE WORKING IN A CUSTOMER SERVICE SETTING!!! The "manager" thinks she knows how to run the place, but her attitude towards potential diners was appaling (apparently it is customary for a good manager to seat people not according to who came first, but rather to whom she felt like seating). After admittidly losing my altogether (waiting two hours then getting told it will be another 30 min or so will do that to a person), she further presented me with the WORST ATTITUDE, getting extremely confrontational and stating that she had the right mind not to seat me and my husband. Regardless of that, we tried to enjoy our meal...though it was difficult with the "manager" walking around the dinning room talking loudly on her cell phone while people are still trying to enjoy their overpriced meals....in fact, it must be company policy because EVERYONE seemed to be doing it....I guess when the cat's away the staff will play.....I would have had a more romantic evening buying TACO BELL and going for a walk over the brooklyn bridge...."Better food, Better View"...

I was very hopeful at first...cute decor, lovely view, nice service, however the food is subpar here. The $10 guacamole is a shame - watery, overly tart and lacking in all things that make guacamole so irresistible- presenting it in a beautiful Mexican mortar still doesn't make it taste good. The huge, beautiful poor red snapper filet tasted like it was deep fried and cooked in spicy orange juice, and the spinach (also saturated in OJ) was inedible.

Absolutley the worst food and service in New York. Anyone who thinks anything beyond the drinks and view are any good either has no taste buds or has been deceased for quite sometime but refuses to lay down.

It was a beautiful Sunday evening and we decide to dine at an outdoor restaurant. Drove to Alma with great anticipation on a recommendation from a friend. We sat upstairs on the outdoor patio with a nice view of Manhattan. Our Pineapple and Cucumber margaritas were great. The chips and salsa was good. Everything after that were bland and tasteless. The seafood ceviche (snapper, scallop, shrimp) was mostly shrimp and had very little scallop or snapper. The ceviche, more reminiscent of a Ecuadorian style ceviche than Mexican, needed more citrus to balance the prodominant tomato flavor. For the main course the Seitan Tacos were bland and had the consistency of a sponge that did not soak up much flavor. The accompanying vegetable medley was also tasteless and undercooked. After the Seitan tacos, the mediocre steak fajitas was not much better. Although the quality of the steak was good, the marinating spices were non-existent. Overall, a tasteless dish that doesn't even match the fajitas at chain Mexican restaurants. In an attempt to spice up my meal, surprisingly, the restaurant does not have any "hot sauce" or chilis (Odd that a Mexican restaurant does not have any chili or hot sauce). At the end, we were quite disappointed with the food. We expected bold Mexican flavors with "soul" and instead, the food was weak in every way. For the price, definitely not worth it. Alma is great for drinks and chips and salsa in an outdoor setting. Anything more, go somewhere else. Unfortunately, the food at Alma has lost it's "soul".

I have to agree with the other negative reviews. The food was OK, but I have had better Mexican from cheap places. (I do have a great deal of experience with Mexican food) But even if you liked the food here, and found it good, the prices at Alma are not worth it. The service here, forget about it. Our waiter was flippant and distracted. I think he felt he was too good to be serving us. And we were sitting in the downstairs dining room, which on this Sunday evening was half empty. There is no air conditioning, so we were sweating from the heat, with all the room's windows open, waiting for some water, which when they came by to fill, was warm. Maybe we went on an off-night, who knows.

B61 renders Smith Street totally useless. Friendly and talented bartenders whip up whatever you need from this well-stocked bar. Many beers on tap and great margaritas. Gets a bit crowded on weekends due to spillover from Alma, but once the dinner crowd dies down there's no place I'd rahter be in the neighborhood.

We live in the neighborhood and visit this place more than I'd like to admit. Start with the free chips and salsa and whatever the tamale of the day is. For your entree, the old standards like the Enchiladas Chile Colorado and Fajitas are great. And my wife got the Mahi Mahi the other day, which was really good as well. We also fight over a side order of the Cheese Rice every time. For a less-crowded experience, try Brunch. We particularly like the Huevos a la Mexicana, Camarones Fritos and Alma's take on the BLT -- soooo good. (be sure to ask for Chipotle Mayo on the side of WHATEVER you get!) In addition to the classic Margarita -- from scratch, no mix -- Alma has several interesting varieties like Cucumber. All in all, a great place to eat with an amazing view.

New to Brooklyn, I have had both the best and worst dining experience of the past year in the space of a month. This place was THE WORST. Pretty, out of the way, sort of romantic but with food and service SO bad I wonder how it can survive, even in Brooklyn. The first thing we were served should have told me something: Stale flavoless chips and watery salsa. The chorizo Quesadilla was not bad, but a bit dry. The steak fajitas were overcooked and underseasoned and the chicken enchiladas tasted frozen (the red sauce was good though) did I mention the weak margaritas ? You would think we would have had the good sense to stop there but my friend insisted on dessert. So we were treated to a chocolate cake and flan that both had refrigerator taste. YUCK ! On my way out, while I was waiting for the bathroom (which is right next to the kitchen) I noticed not one but TWO MICROWAVES that were both in use. As someone who once worked in a kitchen (pastry) I was shocked. This place wants to be taken seriously for food and they are sticking everything in the microwave? On the way out I asked my server (who was friendly but clueless) who the Chef was, she replied that "we haven't had a Chef in years" but "A new Mexican Chef from NYC is supposed to start next week" need I say more ? She/He certainly has his work cut out. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID !!

That last reviewer could not be more correct about this place. We went their for my friend's Birthday thinking it was a good spot, what a dissapointment. I don't even now where to begin, from their so called Mojitos which were more like club soda and lime juice or from the unattentive server who looked the other way and rolled his eyes when he was taking our order. I can't recall the last time I had to raise my hands to have the waiter come to our table, actually I can "NEVER". Shall I continue, we waited an hour for a table on their rooftop to have probably the worst meal of my life. Each dish came out cold and the presentation was non-existant as well as the flavors. So if you think that was bad enough, after informing the manager of our dinning experience, he did nothing to correct the situation. He went as far as offering us a round of drinks of club sodas and lime, I mean "mojitos" sorry, "NO THANKS". Being in the industry for 10 years myslef, I never thought that this type of service existed and I've dined from 4 star restaurant to your local diners. Alma seriously need to re-evaluate their steps of service and management team if it is to succesfully please their patrons experience.

Pros: Nice view

Cons: Too many thing to list

.

The worst dining experience I've had in years. Even the gorgeous view of lower manhattan could not make up for the bad service, bland entrees, and wanna-be margheritas. We waited about 30 mins for our food and the waiter did not even apologize for the long wait. The pork chop was giant slab of unseasoned fat, the crawfish soup tasted like cheap tomato soup with old crawfish and the meat stuffed pepper had no taste at all. Even the guacamole was not appetizing.

I wish I could think of a reason for someone to go to this restaurant. I didn't even want to take our leftover food for our dog.

I'd heard raves about Alma for years, so I was decidedly unprepared for mediocre upscale (and overpriced) Mexican. It's not a difficult cuisine to do well, just don't be so fussy and pretentious . . .
The salsas and guacamole were great; the food was fine, just not at all what it tried to be (my mind goes to back to California longingly - why can't it happen here?)
The waitstaff was alternately inattentive and insistent and the steak was rubbery. Maybe we got there on a bad night, but at these prices, I won't be back to find out . . .

I was taken out for dinner at Alma's Mexican restaurant, very excited to be there loved the view and the food was wonderful.Had 2 cocktails, apertizer then main course. When finished waiter came and asked if we wanted desert...said we'd wait a bit and had a glass of wine.We waited for the waiter to return to order coffee & desert , after 20 min.he did with the check. We stated we never order desert, his response was the manager sent him over with the bill, because they need the tabel for there were people waiting..asked to see the manager and when he came his answer was the same dazed and confused we sat there waiting. Then a young lady came & asked if we wanted to order anything else of course we refused to order any thing and left and will never return. They should learn restaurant manners..The manager should have given an apolgy & all would have been forgiven. So if your looking to eat good and fast and then leave ,then this is the place to go

This place drives me insane, because the food is FANTASTIC, but the service is the worst in Brooklyn.

Rooftop view of city is amazing. Food is always good quality. Menu changes insure "us" regulars won't get bored. Margaritas are delicious!! Keep up the good work. Oh, and as for the wait.....there's a reason people wait so long for a seat :)

I'm past my 20's but was feeling kind of fun and hip waiting for our table in the bar area. Regulars were playing cards and the bartender was fun without being cutesy. After an hour wait, we were finally called on our cell phone for a table. On our way up the stairs - a giant cockroach was scurrying along one of the steps. When I told the guy at the top of the stairs - discretely - he insisted it was a waterbug and acted as though I was an idiot for pointing it out. We left - didn't need dinner after all...

I was a little confused about what to think since the reviews here are both extremely good and extremely bad. I think the restaurant would do much better with better service when you're getting a table. It took like 15 minutes just to talk to the woman who mans the door and then when we asked how long a wait it would be she told us she 'had no idea'. WTF? After waiting about 45 min for a table, we sat down outside and the view is even better than promised. The food was excellent. The cucumber margaritas, guacamole and duck were fantastic. The service was slow and stand-offish, as other reviews stated, and I actually did see an insect at the end of our meal, like one of the other reviews mentioned, but I'd still go back here any day. The view and the food are worth the hassle and insect sighting.

Last week, I went to Alma on a date. We could have been seated right away downstairs. But we decided to wait 40 minutes for the roof top. While we waited, we had drinks at the bar. I had an excellent Mojito. The rooftop was worth the wait. The view was great and the atmosphere was romantic. We had a couple of specials... all of which were very tasty. If you want a nice relaxing night out. It is a must....

Waited 40 minutes for a table. Waited 1.25 hours for food. Right before food was served, 2+ inch waterbug crawled across my lap from the upholstery in our booth. The waitstaff looked at us like we were crazy because we were alarmed. They watched the waterbug run towards the kitchen after we jumped out of the booth, and didn't bat an eyelash, let alone try to get it. They also didn't offer to comp us even a drink, forget about an apology. They grudgingly let us move to another table (with freestanding chairs).
On top of all that, what food we were able to eat was mediocre.

alma is one of the best mexican restaurants in all of nyc. amazing use of spices, ingredients, and just all around flavor.

even though this will make me wait in line longer, here's my advice: run. don't walk. go to alma. you won't regret it. and you will put it in your top 5 "must-eat-there-before-i-die" category.

If you want a nice view, take the ferry. For food and drinks, Alma is a total waste of time and money. Food truly was below average at best - tasteless chicken tacquito appetizer, ok guacamole, fajitas were flavorless. Maybe it was great one day long ago, but not now. It's waiting to close down, or be closed down; whichever happens first. Really disappointing, don't believe the hype.

No doubt the view is wonderful from the rooftop patio. The drinks are great too. Unfortunately the food is just OK. The servers were prompt and attentive, but the food arrived lukewarm (maybe it was served so quickly because it was pre-cooked and had been sitting out for a while) and was not all that flavorful. The duck came in a bland peanut sauce and the steak fajitas were overdone.

The view is amazing whether you're on the rooftop or on the second level where it's cool and air-conditioned. I was sitting by the window one night and we could see some random firework. And their guacamole is great. But my favorite has to be the steak fajita. Yum!

This is a wonderful restaurant and very hidden. The roof top view is amazing. The service is quick and very friendly. The food isn't your typical Mexican but that makes it great. Many different choices and very reasonably priced. Overall, a great place!

I previously wrote a fantastic review for this restaurant, but went a couple months ago and it had gone down a lot in quality. The food is still pretty good, but it used to be really delicious and interesting, and now is just above average. Many of the best items on the menu have been removed. The service was always mean, and still is. For the price, it is no longer anything special and not worth the hike from the subway, even for the view. But if I lived very close by, I would still go there.

I took my mom here on Mother's Day. It was perfect. Even on an unseasonably cold day, the rooftop patio was comfortable. And, of course, the views are amazing. The chilaquiles con huevos were fanatastic, as was the flourless chocolate cake.

I'm willing to eat bad food here just for the view, which is saying something really nice about the view. The food here can occasionaly be good but is most often very disappointing. The salsa is almost inedible. The margaritas, however, numb the tastebuds nicely.

Yes, the view from the roof deck is spectacular. The skyline of Manhattan makes for a marvelous backdrop while sampling the best tamales this side of the board. Try the chilaqules that is drips with spicy rancheros sauce. Recommended entrees include the Pato Cachuate (grilled duck breast in a peanut sauce), Chuleta de Puerco Adobo (pan seared pork loin in a roasted tomato sauce with sauteed poblano and ancho chiles) or the Camerones Asado (Shrimp Fajitas with mango salsa, chipolte sauce and pico de gallo). Everything tasted extremely fresh, and the exotic mix of flavors left my pallet swooning in amazement. This is first rate creative and traditional Mexican fare. It ranks up there with the finest Mexican restaurants in Manhattan and has a killer roof deck to boot. Check it out!

Walked down from Brooklyn Heights along the BQE's service road and through the marine terminal, and suddenly there is a brief oasis of restaurants. Downstairs there is a good bar with a fast, friendly bartender who mashes healthy quantities of sugar into freshly cut lemons or sprigs of mint before putting in the vodka and rum. Upstairs, there is the inside dining room, and the upstairs patio. The views are equally good, as the large windows in the dining room are open with nice views of lower Manhattan through the cranes on the docks. Oh, and the food is great. Best mole in Brooklyn.

Alma is worth a visit for its location alone. It is in a romantic and charming part of Carrol Gardens, where brownstone brooklyn meets the industrial and gritty port of New York. The views of the port and lower Manhattan are great, both from the deck and from the large picture windows of the dining room. The food, for the most part, is very decent: crispy and flavourful duck, savory poblano relleno, and classic enchiladas. My ceviche was more like a shrimp cocktail, the spicy sauce overpowered the delicated seafood. And our Sauza Gold margaritas were a tad too sweet. The service was friendly, but slow and a little forgetful. But I will come back.

Ate on the deck, which was truly great, worth the wait for the view, considering it's summer. Tho the main dining room is cute, and does have some views. We found the service quite good and attentive, the meals did take a while to come after the appetizer, but we weren't exactly in a hurry, and afterwards the waiter went out of his way to apologize for the delay. Food, delicious, we'll definitely go back. Waiting in the bar downstairs, they don't serve the flavored margaritas the restaurant does upstairs.

This was quite possibly the worst meal I have ever been served at a restaurant. The enchiladas were tasteless and DRENCHED in grease. The service was average, but the waitress looked at my full plate, and didn't ask me if I was satisfied (i.e. why I had only taken two bites of my entree). Decor was lovely, but I can't eat the table. Margarita was wonderful. I'll never return.
