We were curious. We went. We will never go back. I am French and I don't see anything about this place French. Except maybe a trendy pretention to get away with mediocrity because it is...French? The food is expensive for what it is. I can get better in a can. The magret is basically 8 thin slices layed down in a pool of sauce with in a middle some couscous that would feed a one year old. For $17...Please! My friend went for the confit. It was more a duck leg athan anything else. Then the best of the best: WE WERE ASK TO LEAVE!!! was it because we misbehaved? talked too loudly? got naked? no mind you!!! Obviously we were taking too much time at our table after waiting for ever for the main course. In 17 years in this city, nobody ever had the nerves to ask to free the table for others waiting. And I have been in many many different places!!! CAn you even imagine? Don't waste your time nor your money in this empty place.

Pros: none

Cons: awful

We went there on a Friday night with 3 friends. It took a little while for us to get our table, but that was expected. We were able to open our bottle of wine (BYOB) in waiting. The staff were curtious & friendly. The food was amaizing, highly recomment the Duck Breast! Can't wait to go back & try a couple of the other dishes.

I really wanted to like this place. It's charming, albeit cramped & has the feel of a hidden gem. Sadly, I find myself wishing there were a half star rating to serve up here.
My friend confirmed reservations for our party 48 hours prior to our arrival, only to be met with blank stares of incredulity. " No. Nothing here under that name. I'll seat you as soon as I can."
"As soon as I can" translated to almost an hour wait. A wait in which we watched with utter dismay as our host seated his friends who had audibly "just popped by" at a table he had only moments before nodded toward and said, "he'd have ready for us shortly." Once finally seated at a cramped alternate table, we were informed that of the 7 apps on the menu ,a scant 3 were available. "Ok, the food must be really good," I thought. More bad news. There was 1 entree from the menu to be had & 1 special of merguez w/ cous cous.
After ordering what we could, we were informed that of the 3 app choices, they were now "down to two," & "sorry, dessert's on the house." Of the apps left the alleged "terrine de faisant," which, when it finally arrived, tasted suspiciously like ground pork. I grew up eating pheasant almost weekly, so my tongue was primed but I found myself dabbing at the little clumps of meat masked in gooey brie & wondering...
The chicken was scant & a bit dry but pleasant. I ate my partner's few remaining bites as I was still starving.
We opened our 2nd bottle of wine, meant to be a gift, just to put something in our bellies. Our host/waiter came blithely by , visibly drunk, offering us the check instead of our promised dessert. Upon my inquiry as to what there was for sweets, I was told to "pay no attention to what was on the menu." He begrudgingly brought 2 unremarkable mango mousse for the 3 of us & staggered away.
We left- hungry & dismayed.

I used to be a big fan of Ivo and Lulu but after tonight?s experience I will never go back. I made a reservation over a week ago for a party of four. When I got there tonight not only was there no record of my reservation but the waitress/hostess was absolutely rude and inconsiderate. Although half the restaurant was empty she said she was too busy (understaffed?) and told us to wait. After 45 minutes I asked for my bottle of wine back (which she had placed in the freezer) and then she continued to chat with the chef. After another 20 minutes we left, and she followed us out to scold us for leaving. Her behavior was unacceptable and uncalled for, and the experience was an overall disappointment. A truly unremarkable and upsetting visit to a once fantastic restaurant.

Ivo and Lulu used to be a well kept secret. They didn't used to take reservations (now they claim they do for the past ?) and had some of the most entertaining staff/ customer service.

Unfortunately , the food has gone way down hill. Their best dish (appetizer) the smoked mussels is now made with shrimp..and not even normal sized shrimp. The tiny frozen ones that are the size of you finger nails. A very big let down from what it used to be.

This will be our last time going down their....the BYOB policy is still great, but def. not worth the long trek.

Also the main course, both duck dishes, were good but nothing to write home about...

Cons: cramped space, no walk ins, down graded ingredients in their food

Whoah, really happy not to have seen all the negative comments before going to Ivo & Lulu. I thought the food was great (mussels, rabbit sausage and boar sausage in particular), the service was attentive and prompt, and you can't beat BYOB and good prices. The only con was that the air conditioning was non-existent, so the heat was a bit much. I will absolutely go again though.

Pros: Tasty dishes and BYOB

Cons: No A/C

.

If you visit Ivo & Lulu, you're pretty much just going there so you have somewhere to drink your alcohol. The food is satisfactory, but no where near delighting. Couscous acts as a side for almost every dish you order and over-seasoning in general seems to be a restaurant motto. It's really not worth going out of the way for, and if you are around the area, go next door to La Sirene instead; certainly more expensive, but unquestionably better tasting. Bottom line: Forgettable.

Pros: everything is edible.

Cons: mysteriously enough, there are long waits.... don't know why.

Couple of my friends and I had three-course meal here. It was just a complete waste of money. Every singe dish we ordered was disgusting, we couldn't even have a bite of anything. Dessert was edible, we all came out of the restaurant starving and went to have hambugers, which was much better than the food here and it cost not even 1/5 of the price that they charged us. I guess people only go because it's BYOB. Don't waste your money & time.

I used to come here all the time when the original owners were in the picture... Since the new owners took over, I have been here three or four times. I gave them a good chance, but it's just not the same. It seems like they took the establishment as a turn-key operation, and keeping the same menu and ambience, but they just don't have a clue what they are doing. The spirit is not there, first of all. This is hard to explain, but it has a lot to do with a general lack of hospitality. I could forgive this, but the food is not at all as good as the previous chef... The consistency and texture of the ingredients is sub-standard. I doubt it is actually organic. Part of my suspicion lies in the fact that the owners are constantly dashing out the door and returning with bags that look like they are from the Deli around the corner. And then there is the c*ckroach problem... yikes. Spotted several times. Worst of all, on my last trip, I was simply turned away at the door as they were "completely full tonight"... I peeked behind our host to find a half-empty restaurant at 8pm. It's sad really, but I don't think I will be returning again.

I was nervous about going here on a Saturday night after reading these reviews, and I thought my fears would be confirmed -- there was a line out the door, even at 10 p.m.! But as soon as we were seated, the service was amazing -- the woman who seemed to be running the joint was solicitous, helpful and welcoming. She even offered us some of her own wine when she saw that we'd forgotten to BYOB! On top of the convivial atmosphere, the food was fantastic -- all perfectly cooked. Expect a long wait and crowded tables, but it's totally worth it.

I don't doubt that the food is fantastic here, based on the reviews I've read and the team spirit in this tiny restaurant that oozes from the other patrons, all of whom you have no choice but to become quite close with as you are literally sitting next to them. The problem? We were never served! We were totally nonplussed as we watched the staff scamper around, running in and out of the front door into the rain to some other magical kitchen or some place with hands full of entrees, dirty dishes, etc. It was odd. We ordered and waited...and waited. We had a few pieces of bread and then after an hour, received another bit of bread, which we'd watched the hostess/waitress/busser bring to the restaurant from a grocery, along with a few pats of store-bought butter. By the time we decided that we just couldn't wait to eat any longer (we were meeting friends later and with not even an appetizer in sight after an hour and a half, we knew it was never going to happen) my hair smelled of oil and meat and I had had it. I was also confounded to look around and realize that of the 9 or 10 tables, not a single one had food on it. The poor lonely guy in the kitchen---I felt bad for him. We made a b-line for the tiny BYOB French Bistro next door and were served a fantastic authentic French meal in a flash and were treated like queens by the fabulous chef/owner. Not sure if I can talk myself into going to this tiny corner in SoHoand making the choice to give this place another go when an intensely enjoyable dining experience is just next door at La Sirene. Wish I could have tried Ivo and Lulu. : (

Cons: Literally, where's the beef?

.

I'm not sure why this place is so well loved. I've been twice (I didn't trust my judgment after the first time) and it was consistently bad. The potatoes au gratin were a vat of gooey cheese (with a little bechamel thrown in) and the occasional tiny potato hunk. The faisant terrine was deliciously spiced, but the texture was just odd. The mains have very small portions with weird sauces and a teeny scoop of couscous. Chocolate mousse was watery and old. Don't bother!

Love the food and ambiance and Ivo and LuLu's. Delicious innovative cuisine without breaking the bank. To make this restaurant even better, it's BYO with no corkage fee! The only drawback was the rude host, but it won't keep me from returning.

Unfortunately, my last trip after the owners changed was not as amazing. Nothing bad, mind you, and still a pretty great deal for the money. But the food just lacked that spark and depth of flavor that it used to have. I appreciate that they tried to keep the same menu going, but the dishes just pale in comparison to the old chef's.

I was very disappointment the last time we went there. I have gone here since the original owners first started the restaurant and since they sold it to the new owners its just not the same. For starters they are now "supposedly" taking reservations. We arrived a few weeks ago to the restaurant at around 7:30PM to be told that "sorry but the AC is out and we have all the tables reserved so we cant seat you tonight". Well the restaurant had two people inside so I dont know when these reservations were for or if they existed. I would have been willing to sit in the heat but that was never even offered to us as an option. So as a recommendation if you do go there try and make a reservation in case they are really taking them otherwise you wont get in at all. So besides the reservations I think the service is just not what it used to be. I miss the old owners!!

Pros: Very cheap for the quality of food, BYOB, Food

Cons: Small, long waits, poor service

.

The first dish will be great, a nice A1 kick with pepper..., 2nd dish tastes like the 1st, the third tastes like the 1st, then you start to wonder if the same secret sauce is used on every dish. Service made the night worse. They lost a bottle of wine, which would have been fine if there was an apology, but instead they insisted that we didn't give them the bottle making the patron feel responsible instead. Then to make it worse, they push you to order more dishes, desserts to squeeze in the extra dollars etc... which would have been fine had they not refused to open the other bottle of wine right after we ordered claiming that they need to free up the table. It almost makes you think that they didn't lose the bottle of wine but wanted to make sure you get out of there asap since there are only 5 tables in the room. They were surprised to see that we had another bottle and then had to refuse to open it. As someone who loves small cozy restaurants and a great supporter for small businesses, I am sad to say that this is a restaurant that is not worth your time.
Unless cheap is all you care about, and rude service is ok with you, skip this place and check out the hip brooklyn restaurants that have the TRUE friendly vibe this place is so trying to portray.

Cons: Cheap everything, rude staff, Not sincere

It's sad but true! I use to love this restaurant, the food is really good, and you can't beat BYOB. However the last time I was there, 3 creepy crawlers crawled onto the table! I didn't make a big deal of it, but when I did tell the waiter he said "that's New York" , and asked if I was from New York, as if it's normal to have 3 creepy crawlers on my table in New York. And as a "gift" as the waiter put it, he gave us free dessert. The dessert was delicious but still I wonder about this place.

The value is great, the food is good and the restaurant is small, quaint and fills quicky. I had the confit which was very nice, except the "sauce" was very overpowering. The service was friendly, but don't take their "predicted time" if you are waiting for a table. Our first attempt to eat there was a disaster. 20min turned into over an hour. We went and bought some wine, returned and then kept being told "soon". They offered us some chairs outside to have a drink, thinking they were going to offer one on the house for the hassle. So there we were sitting on a mix of deck chairs and stools to then be given glasses to drink our $60 bottle of wine on the street! Needless to say we left that night, with wine in hand, starving etc... We went back last night to see what the fuss is about. It is OK but not fantastic, don't get caught out by bad time management, have a plan B.

Had a superb meal at this SoHo hole in the wall. Appetizers and entrees are mouth watering and miles above the norm. Don't stick around for coffee or desert.

Atmosphere: charming, welcoming and warm; however, if I had to guess, I would say that the silverware, table-clothes and just about everything else in this restaurant was purchased for the sum total of $50. Still, whoever spent that $50 did so thoughtfully.

Cons: Maybe get an espresso machine (but if they can afford one, it ruins the legitimacy of the atmosphere)

I went to Ivo and Lulu for my friends birthday celebration. They have an extra room to the restaurant that you can
use for a large group. It is a real cozy set up with two tables and a lots of room to mill around. The menu for a large party is a prix fix for $30 a person. You get an appetizer and entree with that. The menu is small but the food was delicious. I had the boar sausage and loved every bite.
It's bring your own bottle so come prepared if you feel like drinking. The owner was so warm and accommodating. We had a marvelous time.

We went here because the of the reviews and the food and service both sucked! Food wasn't aweful and the service thought they were so cool but they are idiots!

Ivo and Lulu is one of my favorite finds in the city. The food is phenomenal! The menu is really short, but everything that comes out of the tiny kitchen is fantastic. BYO also keeps the tab low.

I'd recommend coming early. Half an hour after opening, the place is filled up. The food is excellent and inexpensive; portion sizes aren't too big so you won't be weighed down if you're planning any post-dinner excursions. I enjoyed the ambiance; it's not a formal place but very quirky. Most of the tables are right next to each other (literally), so hope you aren't seated next to anyone aggravating. I would recommend this place for a date with someone you know well, but not a first date--it's romantic, but not a good place to get to know someone.

What had been a lovely, convivial restaurant with terrific food and a welcoming atmosphere has become an evil fiefdom where one is ASKED TO LEAVE to accommodate other guests, despite having been seated only ONE HOUR and having wine remaining on the table. McDonalds has posted on its walls that one is allowed only 20 minutes at a table, and despite their posting, Ive never, ever, been thrown from a McDonalds. Kicking people out with the meal still on the table? The waitstaff first doing this and then the management reinforcing it, yelling at the table? McDonalds is now preferable to my old friend.

I used to love this place, and have gone many times. The food is still fine, though a bit less well prepared. The new staff, however, is more rude than any I have encountered that I can remember. We had to ask for bread, water, and napkins. We ordered two entrees and an appetizer, and brought our own wine. After one hour, having finished the food but not the wine, we were asked to leave to give our table to other customers. Upon noting that we hadn't been there for long and that we wanted to finish our wine, the waiter told us to "go drink it outside or something". Having worked as a waitress for years, I was shocked when the manager essentially repeated his request, and in no nicer terms. I expect that the absurdly loud music is another part of the new plan to shuffle more customers in and out, but unless you want to shout your way through a rushed meal, I'd find a new hole-in-the-wall.

My boyfriend and I had been loyal customers of Ivo & Lulu's, coming in at least once a month to dine, until the last time we came and discovered the restaurant had been sold. The atmosphere (which was one of the great things about this restaurant) had changed. It was not longer had the funky artsy feel to it. The food was similar but seem oilier. Plus they ran out of dessert. The staff, although friendly, seemed to rush us - eat and get out was the feel ( the old management never placed pressure on us). The last time I was there was in the beginning of June and we haven't been back since. Very disappointing!

If you didn't know about this place by word of mouth, I'll bet you'd never find it. At first I thought that was pretty silly, but now I realize why they have it like that. Ivo & Lulu is a very well kept secret. The food is inexpensive and flavorful, the atmosphere is simple but comfortable, and they allow you to bring your own wine which they'll even chill for you! The menu is short, but I don't think you can have a bad meal here. Definately give Ivo & Lulu a try!

Related to uptown A, Ivo & Lulu is a downtown gem. Amidst a sea of restaurant snobbery, the owner, who also cooks all the food and has a resume that includes Chanterelle, is one of the most down to earth people with a magical spicy touch in the kitchen. Despite his less than humble culinary resume, the food and prices are an incredible bargain. Hidden, cozy and friendly, this place would be great for a date or just chilling with friends. Vive la France!

I've been to Ivo and Lulu twice and each time delights. The first time was on a cold February night, a good bottle of red wine, the cozy atmosphere, and delicious food made it perfect. The second time was last Saturday night. After a wonderful afternoon of wine tasting, I bought a good bottle of red and headed over to Ivo's. The smells coming from the kitchen make your mouth water from across the street. The pheasant pate with brie crust is out of this world and the duck in tangerine and peppercorn sauce is wonderful and surprising- a nice mix of sweet and spicy. The bill coming up to only $25 dollars makes it even better, plus drinking a bottle of wine that you chose, thus you know it will be good and cheaper than ordering a few glasses, makes this place a total winner. The service is attentive w/out being overbearing, the crowd is chill, and the music is great. It's nice to know that unassuming, great little places like this are still around. Run, don't walk to Ivo's!!!

We wanted to be charmed but the food was disappointing. Appetizers were definite misses (baked avocado appetizer and smoked --unpleasantly so--mussels). Sausage was horribly oversalted, duck with mango was OK. Gratin dauphinoise and salad were acceptable. A bargain perhaps (though some entrees are now $12 and $14), with BYOB, but a $25 bad meal is not really a bargain. A warm night with no air conditioning left the interior of the restaurant like a sauna. Very happy to leave and will not be returning.

After reading all the reviews, I really wanted to go here with my friends for my birthday. I got there early on a Friday night and the place was pretty empty, only to find out that they had a reserved party of 21 coming in and couldn't accommodate my group. So their no reservations policy isn't all that true. Definitely want to go back & actually eat there and try it out, but didn't get to do it this time!

I wish we had discovered this place as soon as we moved to NYC! The food was fantastic! The goat cheese pair appetizer and grilled avocado appetizer was unlike anything I have had before. Each entree ordered from our table of four was delicious! The coconut flan dessert finished the dinner off perfectly! The prices are extremely reasonable but when you add in the BYOB benefit, this place can't be beat!

What a great place!! With a cozy atmosphere and absolutely delicious food, this hidden gem tucked into an off-the-beaten-path corner of Soho never lets us down. After 5 visits, we now begin planning our return even before the dessert reaches the table. Everyone we drag there with us confirms our opinion: this unassuming underdog wallops more pretentious and expensive restaurants in both price and taste. The only drawback I can name is the uncreative dipping oil for the table bread--but it's free. Go for the unrivalled though unusual roasted red pear with goat cheese to start, try either the duck breast or chicken breast as the main course, and end with the pineapple flan. Cash only, and no reservations--get there early!

food is excellent, and so is service, on the plus side you can bring your own wine bottle, thus slashing about $50 off of your final tab (impressing your date AND getting a healthy steady buzz for yourself). BUT space is small, and don't be surprise if you get to hear your neighbor's stories clearer than your date accross the table. Overall it's a soooo worth it experience :)

This place was not exactly the romantic, chill lair that I had imagined. Had dinner here on a Sat. night and bad 80s music was playing pretty loud - was not exactly condusive to fine wine and conversation. The menu is very small with only a few options. My cheese fondue and chicken were ok, but nothing to go back for. And apparently my friend had arrived early to ask the waitress to bring out a special surprise dessert for me, but she entirely forgot. Half the time she was MIA despite the fact that she only had 3 tables. Someone there told us the place is usually better on week nights, so heed this wisdom. We're in no hurry to go back.

The pun is intended. The mixture of French Caribbean delicacies are to die for. Not only was it worth the wait but we waited at the local wine bar next door, Monkey Temple, which had a great vibe and we bought wine for our meal. Ivo & Lulus staff was really attentive and made us feel at home. I love the pear appetizer, and mushroom soup, my fiance enjoys the duck and chicken, and any dessert is incredible. We work in midtown and live in Brooklyn and decided that this is the spot to become a regular. Bon a petit!

I must say that the food was delicious. We had a table of 5, and we tried most everything on the menu. I really like the scalloped potatoes and the mussels appetizers. I got the smoked duck for the entree which was really good. I think they might have raised the prices though, because most of the entrees were between 12 -14. And honestly, the serving sizes were VERY small (we got pizza afterwards). We tried both desserts and were not impressed. So from a pure food standpoint although it all really tasted good, it isn't as cheap as the other reviews convey. However, I would definately go back because it's a BYOB.

While the kitchen is about the size of a closet, the food that comes out of there is colossal.
Nothing is over 10 dollars and and evry taste is unique. The food melts away the small restaurant and delivers you to a place that I call heaven. Did I mention BYOB?

I selfishly don't want to sing Ivo & Lulu's praises because I want to keep this gem to myself, but really - this place is just wonderful. Ridiculously simple & inexpensive, it is delicious and delightful. It is VERY close quarters, but it adds to the charm. The hosts are so sweet & friendly, too. Bring wine and good company, it's simply marvelous.

I went to Ivo & Lulu's last night with a group of friends...read the reviews prior, and knew to Bring Our Own...we could not decide on what to order, so we ordered one of everything, it was not very extensive, but in fact, "less is more", and it was so much more then I expected. Everything was spectacularly delicious and no one wanted to be done with their meal. It wasn't just food, it was an amazing explosion of flavors of savory, sweets and exotic textures all in one. I fell in love with the Coconut squash soup, the Coconut flan, and the host :)
Mmmm...I can almost taste it now. There was not one unsatisfied customer at our table. We were eating in such slow motion... just to make it last longer. I truly believe it tastes so great because it's made with love. I'll definitely be a regular.

After visiting friends' "little neighborhood joints" for years, I always thought, sure, it would be satisfying for me too if I went there every week and the owners got to know me... Well, I'd make you feel at home too if you dropped thousands of dollars at my restaurant.

Here, you get that experience THE FIRST TIME you visit.

I've always searched for the best food, rather than the best 'dining experience'. Now, I finally get what's so great about having a little place of your own. Food here is very tasty French-Carribean bistro fare, but it's almost besides the point. It's so satisfying that describing this place is futile. Bring your favorite wine. Soak it in. At $20 a head, you have nothing to lose. I don't know how they make money -- it would cost me as much to buy the ingredients and make these dishes at home.

I have been here a couple of times and I love it. The staff makes you feel as though you are having a casual, delicious dinner at a friend's house. The menu is cheap and inventive. Plus, it's BYOB! I came here with a few friends, and we had the best time. Even though the place is small, the staff does not rush you out the door. You might have a wait a bit for a table, but there is a great bar next door (Monkey Temple), where the atmosphere is just as inviting, and makes the wait feel short.

Went to Ivo and Lulu for dinner last night and the whole experience was fantastic. The space is small and they don't take reservations, but go next door to the bar while you wait and have some very yummy sakatini's that are made with fresh fruit. Try the mango. I'll definitely be going back. Thanks for a nice evening.

There are far too many BYOB places in the city and many of them don't have food that shines. But Ivo and Lulu has delicious food (albeit a limited menu) and prices that are unbeatable. The owner is friendly and and space is cozy. Be prepared to wait if you don't get there early.
