5 Stars: Go nuts for the coconut paella (by Mmbnycmaple)

Hidden jewel in midtown. Love this place. I get the same thing every time...the Paella Mariscada. I love to bring groups and out-of-towners here especially during the summer when the out-door seating area is open. No fajitas or quesadillas here! Above par Mexican.

2 Stars: amazing food...but that's it (by anvasqu)

Guac was OK, $14 and small. Entrees were approx $30, amazingly good but small. Service was so-so. Drinks were $12-14. Ambiance is not cozy nor charming. Definitely overrated.

1 Stars: Terrible dining experience (by dtwes7)

Had a 9 PM reservation Friday, 6/5. We liked the upstairs dining space but that's about the only positive we could take from the meal. Generally, we are relatively easy to please; however, Pampano was thoroughly disappointing. We ordered a house margarita and glass of sangria to start, to go along with guacamole/chips appetizer. We proceed to order our entrees - my girlfriend ordered the filet mignon, I ordered the miso black cod. No more than 6, 7 minutes later are our entrees already brought out. At this point, we had barely started eating the guac/chips appetizer. Now I'm annoyed and feeling rushed. The entrees were tiny, nowhere near what you'd expect when paying $34 for a filet mignon entree and $30 for a fish entree. In all seriousness, the piece of cod I received was ridiculously small and was only served over 3 pieces of grilled asparagus, no carb whatsoever on the plate. Both still hungry, we go back to snacking on our guacamole and chips. At this point, it's literally 9:20 and we are done with our main course. 20 minutes! We ask to take the remainder of the guac/chips home. The waiter comes over to ask us if we want dessert, all but throwing the menu at us. Clearly, the waitstaff was looking to go home shortly thereafter. We decide to order the corn cake/coconut ice cream/hibiscus sauce dessert simply to delay going home (we live around the corner) - again, our dessert is brought out 2 minutes after we order! We finish the dessert, they clear the plate, and drop the check off at the table about 30 seconds later. Now I'm furious. It's 9:35 and we're discussing the bill - $155 (with tip) for chips/guac, 2 house margaritas, 1 glass of sangria, two tiny entrees and a shared dessert. To top it all off, our waiter never even brought us back our guac/chips to take home (we had already left quite upset by the time we realized). Would never go back. Haven't been this disappointed by a dining experience in quite some time.

2 Stars: Food Exquisite, Service Bad (by JDay)

9P meal, 10P kitchen closing. Waitstaff did everything to hurry us out before ordering: no welcome, no suggestions, no clearing of plates, multiple requests for beverage refills ignored, no dessert or coffee offering.
Great meal, completely offset by the worst service I've seen in a while.
Rowdy overserved party of 7 in the back just added to the 'charm'.

3 Stars: A little overrated. (by AchitaMut)

I took my boss here for lunch and my boss quite enjoyed it. I thought the food was decent but nothing extraordinary compared to what i've read/heard. I don't think I can find a reason to return-- not delicious enough to frequent and not special enough for special occasions.

1 Stars: Pretty place, but the help there ruins the whole place! (by AmityM)

Went with 4 girlfriends last week for a 6:45pm reservation. We had requested outdoor dining specifically. We were NOT told it was "first come first serve" until we got there. They told us it would be a 45 min. wait so we told them it was not a problem and had a drink at the bar. After PATIENTLY and POLITELY waiting until 8:30pm we were still not seated!!!!!!! The hostess was supremely unaccommodating. The manager did absolutely nothing to compensate for the fact that we were misled first on the phone and secondly about the length of the wait. You would think they would have at least offered a complimentary drink or something along those lines! Instead they were rude and indifferent. With so many other restaurants in the area you'd think they would value their customers. Needless to say we left and went to Dos Caminos.

5 Stars: Unlike any other Mexican I've tasted (by jotho)

I made reservations at Pampano after reading cuozzo's review of mexican restaurants in the post. The food really is unlike any Mexican I've had before - the flavors are familiar but presented in a beautiful and unexpected style. I would highly recommend Pampano to anyone looking for an upscale mexican experience.

1 Stars: Best of??? (by sivader)

I am beginning to wonder who gets paid to write all these excellent reviews. Certainly, someone should have paid ME for the meal and experience I had at Pompano last night! We walked in and were seated in what felt like a hallway. Evidently, you have to request the more rustic and appealing upstairs section and were relegated to the stark and drab downstairs section. The waiter was fine; however the food timing was off and it seemed as if they were trying to rush us -- appetizers came before drinks, dinner before we were finshed apps. For appetizers, I had the shrimp empanadas. The sauce was too sweet and there weren't enough shrimp to balance the overpowering sauce. The crust was overfried, limp and oily. My boyfriend had the guacamole, which was the one highlight of the meal; however, you can get good guac at your local tacquiera, so why go to a fine dining establishment for it? Next, the meal was disappointing. I had the mariscada. I can say that the fish was fresh, juicy and tender; however, the preparation completely underwhelmed the quality of the fish. Again, the dish was incredibly oily and the sauce too sweet. My boyfriend enjoyed his lambchops, but said that they were "nothing special". I expected a special meal at Pompano, based on the "BEST" designation on this website. Evidently, I am just a lemming...

1 Stars: Aviod at all Costs (by c2811)

I was celebrating my birthday with a group of friends in Pampano this past Friday, and I was really disappointed. The atmosphere is nice the food looks pretty, but the food tastes horrible. I ordered the pechuga mole (in English that is chicken breast seasoned with chocolate sauce) and it was literally unseasoned chicken breast because the chocolate sauce was brushed on it after it was taken out of the oven. My party was rushed out. The waiter ordered me a flan con chocolate although I didn't ask for it, which was nice until he dropped off the check once I finished eating it. I only had the chance to order one drink. The kitchen closes at 10:30 pm. How does this restaurant make money if a person only stays long enough to order one drink? Save your money from another modern Mexican restaurant in town. There are many other modern Mexican restaurants in New York City that are much better.

5 Stars: YUMMY lobster tacos!!! (by musikmagic)

I love this place-try to Mahi Mahi Cevhiche and the tacos de langosta?.well worth the trip. I recently took a crowd who were in from out of town and they all loved the place as well. Great for groups but I prefer the upstairs dining area over the downstairs mixed seating and bar area.

1 Stars: Good food, terrible service and obnoxious staff (by alexjoseph)

went there sat night for a "light dinner" asked for shrimp to be added into my salad, and the waitress (who was barely available, we saw her three times the entire night) was very accomadating, but she failed to mention that instead of my $11 salad, i would be charged for a full entree. when the bill arrived i questioned it, the manager came over with the most condescending attitude and told me that their "expensive shrimp" were worth the $4 each, esp since the chef had to go through the extra trouble of making the salad to my specifications. i am sorry, but adding 4 shrimp to a salad you have, and when you have the shrimp for other dishes is ridic. i was told it was similar to another entree, which it was not since the accoutrements were of better quality. he argues with me and spoke to me as if i had never been out to dinner before. I will never go back. the food was tasty but incredibly overpriced.

5 Stars: Best Mexican in nyc! (by curtis_krause)

This place quite frankly rules... The ambiance and decor (particularly the upstairs dining room) is top notch. The presentation of food excellent. And each course: guac, ceviche, whole snapper, swordfish, and then the corn pudding for dessert were all delicious and innovative. This chef is a Mexican food purist, a little like Chicago's Rick Bayliss, but he tweaks each menu item, which is mostly seafood, with clever innovations. This is the best mexican in nyc

5 Stars: MY NEW FAVORTIE LUNCHTIME GEM (by joannejordan)

The food is what makes this lunch time treat so special and will keep me coming back for more. People watching and price aside (both of which are great at Pampano Taqueria located in the Crystal Pavillion Food Court on 3rd Avenue between 49th and 50th), I am very picky about fish tacos and these were some of the best I ever had -- and I mean EVER -- on both the east and west coasts. (They are also the bargain of the century at $2.75) The vegetarian torta ($7.50) had excatly the right amount of veggies to hold up to the bread and I'l be darned if my fresh fruit agua fresca didn't take me mentally onto the shores of sunny Mexicio (if only for a little while). Salsa's come in a variety of different heat intensities and colors (green or red) and another fave is the pulled pork quesadilla ($7.00). I can't weait to eat my way through the entire menu ...

5 Stars: Amazing lunch find for those who work in Midtown (by bmanchester)

I went to Pampano and had a wonderful time (which I reviewed) and found out about the taqueria. The restaurant operates a little taco stand in the atrium of the Crystal Pavillion building ( bet 49th and 50th on 3rd ave) but unless someone told you about it you would never know it existed. If you dont have time to sit and eat at a restaurant and cant eat another deli sandwich this place is perfect. They make the best, authentic tacos in the city with housemade tortillas and different salsas- be careful with some! I always get the same thing- one pulled pork taco, one shrimp taco, and one steak taco with chips, rice and beans. I am addicted to the tacos but they do other things like burritos and quesadillas. There can be a line if you go around 1:00 so I always try to go a bit early. This is why New York is so amazing- you find all kinds of great places where you would never expect it.

5 Stars: Good food, atmosphere, and service (by callmezo)

Sunday night around 9pm walked in unknowing about this place. We sat upstairs, which during this day/time was not a problem with seating. It was bright enough to see all, but cozy enough to be romantic. The food, mostly fish/seafood, tasted as good as it looked. The wait staff was attentive, from explaining the meal's content, due to my date's allergies to food, to always replacing the candles on the table and water refills. It was way too hot that night, but they did have outdoor seating on the 2nd floor deck, which I would like to try once it cools off. I would go back again, truly an enjoyable experience.

3 Stars: Poor hostess, great ceviche. (by tbrax)

In terms of food, the ceviche is truly outstanding. We had the 4 ceviche sampler and all 4 were great. The entrees, however, don't measure up. The signature dish is the whole red snapper, but the component parts didn't mesh together well, leaving basically a very nice piece of fish accompanied by mixed vegetables rather than a unified, cohesive dish. The swordfish was good, but not outstanding, and for the prices we had expected better.

With that out of the way, we won't be going back to Pampano for reasons other than the food. We had arrived early for our reservation and had a drink at the bar, and when we went to be seated the hostess hemmed and hawed before offering us a table downstairs. We indicated that we would rather sit upstairs, which is by far nicer, and the hostess hung her head in shame and directed us upstairs, where there was plenty of seating throughout the course of our meal. The hostess acted like a kid caught with her hand the cookie jar--she clearly knew that she had tried to do something she shouldn't have done and that we had caught her. Worse still, it was completely pointless. The restaurant just isn't that crowded. Why try to treat customers with poorly when it isn't necessary? Just silly and unprofessional, and enough to keep us away from Pampano in the future.

4 Stars: great atmosphere, slightly over-priced (by bethwanj)

Went for restaurant week (lunch). The atmosphere is fantastic. Very welcoming. Service was decent. Food was very good. But, absent the pre-fixed menu prices, it's a little pricey for what you get. Chips and guacamole are extra, and pale in comparison to Rosa Mexicana guac. I had the ceviche which was superb. My lunch companion got a chilled corn soup which was just alright. I reccommend the fish, any kind. It was cooked to perfection. Overall, a nice lunch in a nice place. Would consider returning.

5 Stars: Dining Oasis (by girlsview)

Staff was extremely welcoming. The upstairs dining room is amazing. You really feel as if you have left the city. A lot of thought went into the design of this space. Try to plan ahead so you can make a reservation for the outside roof terrace. It's perfect. Our waiter was very helpful with our selections. Even though the entire dining room was packed, we still had amazing service. The food did not disappoint either. We all had drinks, apps, main course and shared deserts and it was about $90 each....but worth it.

I walked by on Sunday evening and decided to check it out. My sister and I were so grateful for finding this gem amongst so many NYC restaurants. We had the swordfish dip, and lobster tacos which were delicious... the dessert was breathtaking the chocolate frlan is like non other.
3 Stars: Umm...Maybe I need to revisit this place? (by elaine820)

Okay, so I didn't love this place and I didn't necessarily hate it until the bill came. I don't mind paying such prices for a thoroughly enjoyable food experience. So how was the total experience? The service was excelente! Lovely decor, bright and airy upstairs (though I went on a balmy summer day, so it was a bit too hot to sit upstairs but otherwise I think it's the best seat in the house). The mojitos were delicious and most of our appetizers were great. Entrees were another story. I was with a big group and I would say that most of us were just satisfied or unhappy with our dishes. Reading all of the reviews here I would be willing to give Pampano another try and hope for the best.

I thought it might be slightly stuffy because of its midtown location, but my party was warmly greeted by a welcoming host who sat us promptly. I'm not in love with tequila and didn't know if there would be an adequate variety of alternative cocktails. But, after a delicious mojito I was persuaded to try a hybiscus margarita that has changed my drinking habits. The wine was also superb (a manger guided us through the list and recomended a spanish albarino which complimented and enhanced our civeches and our seafood entrees) So many of the dishes were great for sharing and each with such unique flavors and characteristics. Pompano (and their staff) did alot to improve my skepticism toward midtown restaurants. Keep doing what your doing, I've got quite a few aries in my circle of friends.

1 Stars: Simply Disgusting/Over Priced (by sushi_search)

Went here for Valentines Day. Big mistake. The total for 2 people was around 250 bucs. Pampano should not be able to command these kinds of prices. The service was poor, they brought out the wrong dish twice. The steak came to the table rare to medium rare so I had to send it back. The baby red snapper on the other hand was dry and over cooked. The orangish soup we tried tasted like it had sawdust in it. They did not even ask us what we wanted for desert. Stay away from this place, its terrible. If you want to spend 200 plus for a dinner there are many places in NYC that are so much better. Look at the other negative reviews too!

4 Stars: Delicious Mexican Food (by notsofussy)

The food at Pompano is indeed delicious - start off with the guacamole, the ceviche and filet mignon tacos make great appetizers and the fish entrees certainly will not disappoint. Delicious food, unfortunately the sangria was a disaster. Service was extremely quick, courteous and attentive. Romantic setting.

1 Stars: High Priced Food with Small Portions (by macx420)

I'm not from France, so I like to eat regular portions of food, not food meant for models. The food is overpriced, and the taste is ok at best. I orderd a Filet Mignon which was on the smaller side. I mean it looked nice on the plate, but I don't want to eat ART, I came to eat food. I also orderd the 3 cevishes, which is a combination of tuna, shrimp and halibut I believe, I mean come on are you kidding me, my 3 year old nephew can eat more that this. My wife orderd a dinner entre as well (forget what it was) and it was finished in 4 maybe 6 bites. Don't go here if you hate flushing money down the toilet.

5 Stars: BEST MEXICAN FOOD!! (by lacatarina)

Who could ever think that Mexican food was so different in the coast? Pampano offers a variety of fish and seafood that you would never have expect in Mexican Cuisine. Their dish presentations are great, with a contemporary feel, and service is excellent, attentive, warm, and professional. Try their specialty drinks, margaritas are made with fresh fruit, and order the smoked swordfish dip, it is a great alternative to guacamole. For entrée, get the whole red snapper or the shrimp. And PLEASE do not leave with out trying the chocoflan for dessert, it is such a delight that it melts in you mouth.
If you are expecting the abundant typical tex-mex food, Pampano is not the right place for you.

5 Stars: new favorite (by foodlover2004)

Our experience was great. The staff is friendly and accomodating. We made a reservation for 7:45 on a Friday, we arrived there on time. We were asked to wait for a few minutes at the bar (this wasn't what we were hoping for, after all we did have a reservation ) The bartender was so we didn't mind the wait. Our table was ready shortly. We were seated in the upstairs dinning room, which is amazing. Our server asked if it was our first visit and it was.He described each dish for us.We decided to let him order for us. the choices were great.Everything was so good....tasty, spicy and fresh. If you don't mind getting your hands "dirty" the Camarones Talla are a must.I would go back in a heartbeat, and would not mind waiting at the bar !!!!

5 Stars: adventuresome mexican seafood (by chris_malone)

if you are looking for typical mexican fare you are at the wrong place. if you're looking for a mexican chef who gets rather adventuresome when trying to meld seafood and mexican spices & vegetables...then youve come to the right place. i was very pleased with my meal, both my appetizer (scallops & watermelon & grilled catcus) and entree (halibut with mexican chorizo, beans & spices) were both dishes i had never seen or tried before and both had excellent flavor. the service was very attentive & friendly & speedy. the two strikes against this place is that the portions are too small, we left a bit hungry and that in the winter time the upstairs room can be quite cold & drafty given that it's designed for summer outdoor dining. great place, very different mexican meal.

2 Stars: Two Words: Not Mexican (by cretian79)

The only thing Mexican about this restaurant was their use of cilantro. Although the ambience was very nice, this "trendy" Mexican restaurant simply tries too hard. The food was nothing to write home about. The entrees were unimaginative, unappetizing, overpriced, and, to say the least, American with a hint of Latin cuisine. The cornbread desert was warm and soggy. The $14 taco appetizer (one of the few Mexican dishes on the menu) was bland, small and overpriced. The tequila list may have been impressive, but the margaritas were weak and warm. Although the maitre'd catered to her patrons, the waiters were abrupt, obnoxious and generally unwelcoming. So if you are in the mood for Mexican, this is not the place for you. The food was bad, the service was worse, and the prices were outrageous for an establishment that pretends to be something that it is not.

I was in NY for my 1st time in Sept. with my boyfriend. It was Friday Night and we decided that we wanted to eat Mexican food. The hotel that we were staying at recommened Pompano. WOW! We loved the food but the dessert was a delight. I believe it was called Nati's flan? I think I can't remember. The place for a Friay night was not packed. The balcony was pretty packed. I love this place and when I visit again I will be visiting again.

1 Stars: Sour Experience (by martinhfbc)

Although the decor is fresh and pleasant, the food was horrible and extremely over priced. My order came out as one tiny 2 inch square piece of fish on a banana leaf, tasting so sour and foul that I could barely take three bites. Others tolerated their food, but the price was ridiculous for not enjoying one bite of our meals.

i thought the service was decent (somewhat intrusive because there were too many people working) and the guacomole was AWESOME. The rest of the meal was overpriced for the type of food. Shrimp in sauce had tails still on that were hidden. Cheese on enchilladas wasnt melted. On the other hand, tequilla selection was fantastic. I think this place could be good if they concentrated on the food as much as the alcohol.

Perhaps I made a wrong turn and had dinner at another restaurant by the same name. Things began well with excellent margaritas at the bar. The four of us were seated in the outdoors patio(not requested) and suffered through a muddled menu, indifferent food, a below average waiter, as well as excessive noise, wind and cold. It makes we wonder if the chef was taking a siesta at 8PM that night! I will approach rosey reviews by restaurant reviewers with much more sceptcism.

4 Stars: Needs to Work out Some Kinks (by jenniebnyc)

The space.. gorgeous. The menu inventive, but service was off. Waiter was a strange bird and when told we wanted to enjoy our dining experience and not be rushed through dinner, he assured us it takes 30 minutes to get entrees once food was ordered. Well, literally 7 minutes later we were being served dinner, with no apologies from the server who was too scared to come to our table. Never asked us how our meal was during or after we finished eating. It was not crowded at all, but enough people to make the place buzz. I spoke to the GM after the meal and we were treated to a glass of port and an assurance if we come back, it will not happen again. I hope the place survives, but this address could be cursed. Needs more lively music. There is a great bar with no patrons downstairs.

5 Stars: Muy Bueno (by maruvius)

Pompano is truly refreshing mexican fare, a seafood menu that shows that the south of the border cuisine doesnt always have to include heavy cheeses, rice and meat. The ceviches are all interesting, and the remaining appetizers on the menu are worth a shot. The entrees give you an opportunity to sample some unique ingredients and preparations that make 'mexican seafood' a cuisine worth exploring.
