I've been here several times. The food is amazing, and it never fails to excite my taste buds. The service is typically accommodating (at best), save my most recent visit. Our waitress couldn't have been more disinterested in providing us with the kind of attention that I've typically encountered at Little Giant. Her smug demeanor was grueling. When a person at the table paused for even a moment to consider their order, they were cattily asked if they might need more time. As if the attitude didn't end there, while attempting to select a nice bottle of wine, she was quick to make us aware that she ??ordered all of the wine for the restaurant?. I can only deduce that in rude speak this meant: ??Is there a particular wine you enjoy?? or ??May I suggest a bottle that will pair with your food choices?? She offered a few hurried and arrogant notes on a particular bottle - which we finally ordered - only to find that her higher-than-thou approach proved to taint her skills as a ??sommelier?. The bottle was actually a newer wine than claimed by our oh-so gracious attendant. Despite the portions of attitude, our party was more than happy with the quality of the food consumed throughout the evening. I will eat here again. But by the time I make the trip, I can only hope this woman has found what she really wants to do in life, because it definitely has nothing to do with the restaurant or service industry.

I wanted to like Little Giant. Really, I did. Every time my husband and I walked by, it was packed to the rafters. So when date night rolled around I suggested we go. Boy, was I sorry. First they tried to put us at a table a deux where the front door bumped one of the seats in the back every time the door opened. After we said we'd wait for another table, we went to the bar. The bartender was rude. First he told us "Hang on." After asking us if we wanted a drink we asked for the drinks menu which we could see the other bar patrons had. He tossed it on the bar, and was very sullen about the whole affair. We were finally seated at a chilly table under the air conditioner and next to the bartender's pounding of the espresso machine equipment. My husband wasn't wild about it, but with the babysitter meter running we couldn't wait for a third table. We ordered 2 apps, 2 mains and a side. Mussels and dandelion salad to start. Mussels arrived, no sign of the salad and we had to ask for it. It arrived a couple of minutes later, with no sign of the preserved lemon or pine nuts as promised on the menu. Next came the mains--my scallops and the pollock. Too bad my husband had ordered the pork, not the pollock. Wait person apologized for the "misunderstanding" and the pork was to be delivered. Meanwhile, everything about the scallops was cold. While cooked and prepared in an attractive fashion, it was all ice cold. There are no heat lamps and the lag time between the apps and the mains was considerable. While I'm sure the scallops were probably delicious when first prepared, I had to wait to so long for them they were not good when they arrived. I was 75% finished with my meal by the time the pork arrived. While the pork was hot, the grains and olives underneath were cold. Check, please. No offer of dessert or drinks taken off the bill. Terrible service, and while the food was nice in theory and ingredients it was ill prepared and delivered too late. For $120+ we could have gone somewhere like Union Square Cafe and had a great meal. I got the sense that the kitchen was playing at being a restaurant and the waitstaff couldn't care less. A visit both first time and last. Don't waste your money here.

Great food. We were early for our dinner so the very friendly hostess offered us a table right away. It was tiny and it would be hard for 3 people to fit so she asked me to check first and if I didn't like it we could wait for another table. That was great! So many places try to shove you into whatever is available just to get you seated. We were 3 people. Had the mousse which was delicious as was the beet salad. For diner we had the swine of the week, the short ribs and the scallops. All 3 were perfect. Ordered a side of mac & cheese. YUM. As for the biscuit- I don't think it was a $5 biscuit . I had very high expectations for a roll. The desserts were great. We had the sticky toffee pudding and the milk & cookies. Get the pudding! It's great. I would go back again and again. I might hope for a different waitress as ours seemed a bit tearse. She was efficient just not super enjoyable company. She could have been nicer.

I was here in October ,maybe, so hopefully the menu has changed since then. The restaurant itself is beautiful to look, that's probably the only redeeming quality. The chicken liver mousse was bland and boring, I had the duck confit...asked the server about it and was sorry to hear that they don't have a real kitchen..leading me to think that they must buy a whole lot of their menu pre-cooked. I didn't really get the 'world famous biscuit', and was wondering how they marketed that. It's too bad that neighborhood restaurants these days are surviving on just that, being accessible. It's like take out chinese, but without the fortune cookie.

Held a client dinner on a Monday night and experienced the worst service ever!

The bartender and waiter were very snotty when serving us; we were literally ignored for the first 30 minutes of our stay. This may have been because we were a few minutes late but the restaurant was empty and we apologized profusely.

Our clients flew in from Phoenix and could not believe the attitude given to our friendly bunch.

Also, the venue needs to improve on the ventilation...we left smelling like food.

This place had to be really bad because my boss has NEVER asked me to write negative review.
Thumbs Down

food was pretty good. spinach dip tasted like it came out of the microwave. short rib was really good, brussel sprouts were good. i dont understand, if you cover something in maple syrup how could it not be good? potato side and biscuit were good.
notice nothing was outstanding.
waitress was either retarded or it was her first day. there was one other couple in the restaurant and she handed us one menu and said please share thats all i have. i asked her what she was going to do when more people walked in, her response, "oh wow i hadn't thought about that." Forget asking for recommendations as far as wine paring's go. i got the "the reds are good" response. overall i don't think it lived up to the hype at all.
notice how all the amazing reviews below are posted multiple times by a person who has only reviewed little giant..sounds fishy to me.
wouldn't go there again, but not bad enough to be blasted.

We were really disappointed by Little Giant. My fish was cold and Becky's pork was a) over cooked and b) tasteless. Not appetizing and I am not at all exaggerating when I say that my hand started cramping when I tried to help cut it.

At first sight, the corner location had some charm, but I was unimpressed by the drafty space and the poor food. The dessert was quite possibly the worst we've had in the city.

As for the service --it was "tacky." When your menu's entrees are $36+, you shouldn't come around to the table every 5 minutes while people are still actively eating. The waitress had a "Huh?" look on her face when we asked for an opinion on things like wine pairing.

I am a bit surprised the positive reviews. The crowd was college-age and I suppose it's kind of a "training wheels nice restaurant" for NYU students?

The two female owners of this place are always there, not to make sure service is up to parr, but rather to roll their eyes when diners make comments. Serivce was ok, certainly not outstanding. Food was oversalted, menu is trying too hard to be unique when the sausage/mustard is really just sausage and mustard with some sugar and spices. Bathroom is DISGUSTING...they say you should never eat at a restaurant with a dirty bathroom. Drinks are ridiculous...too many ingredients that don't mix well together. Kitchen is visible from the dining area and if you choose to eat here, you'll be entertained by watching the "professional chefs" sample your food with their bare hands. Also, I live in this neighborhood and the poor cleaning staff schleps linens from the restaurant to the local laundramat where they wash your napkins with other people's underwear. EWWW!

I've lived in New York for eight years and FINALLY went to the Tenement Museum across the street from Little Giant. I had an hour before my tour, so I thought I would finally pop my head in to eat here. The windows were open, which was great as it was a beautiful day to people-watch. The server (who seemed to be in the place by herself) was pleasant and attentive. My only complaint was that my entree fork was dirty. I'd put it toward the other side of the table for removal (hoping she would see the caked on-something) but it was never removed.
I ordered the shrimp and grits. I hadn't expected such a generous portion, and the ratio of grits to shrimp seemed off. Three medium sized shrimp (not prawns) and an over abundance of grits. The dish was tasty, with the grits having more texture than I'm used to with grits, but it was a good thing. I observed a few women having salads, which seemed to be a more appropriate serving for lunch.
I would give it another try if in the neighborhood.

Love the neighborhood but find this place unbearably fussy given the bland and expensive entrees. The meat is kind of sinewy (very "ewy'!) . The wine by the glass was poured short and they charge for coffee refills --very tacky. Overall cheap vibe with some sort of IKEA-at-night decor. My boyfriend lived near Little Giant so we went a few times, hoping it might redeem itself. However, it was consitantly sub-par. Its overpriced and tasteless. There's also a ventilation issue w the bathroom. Ok, that's enough of a reason to not go.

Went here for my boyfriend's birthday, somewhat nervous after reading a few of the reviews here, and had a great time. The atmosphere was just what we were looking for: lively, cozy. It's on a lower east side corner with big glass windows. We had the "chokes and dip" and chicken liver pate for starters. Both excellent and came out of the kitchen pretty quickly. We did have a 7:30 reservation which probably helped because the restaurant wasn't packed when we came in, but the by the time we left it was totally full. I had the scallops with a spring pea puree for my entree, and my boyfriend had the seafood melange, a big bowl of shrimp and mollusks.
It seemed like it might've been our waitress's first night because she had trouble answering a lot of my questions about the wine list and even about one of the entrees. But she was eager to help and brought me lots of little wine samples to help me make my selection.
It's standard Manhattan prices. Our whole tab, for two starters, two entrees, AND a bottle of wine came to $100 (not including tip). I highly recommend it and will probably go back. Love the location, the food, and the atmosphere.

So I read other reviews of this restaurant and a lot of them say it is 'expensive.' While i don't necessarily agree with that, I can see where it could get spendy if you really went 'all out'...three courses, expensive wines, after dinner drinks, etc. But you don't have to order a $75 bottle of wine if it's not in your budget! Their menu has something for pretty much everyone. I am sadly on more of a beer budget, so that's exactly what I ordered when I was in for lunch last week! A $5 beer and a $12 burger (including blue cheese)! Organic beef and a really great buttery toasted bun. And it was big, juicy, and delicious. Not even close to overpriced - in fact as my mom would say...a bargain at twice the price. Sorry Epstein's.

Very bland food, high prices, small portions and big attitude. A gastronometric insult, really. I found it on the "chintzy" side. Cannot recommend, sorry.

No recommendation or returns to Little Giant!

This restaurant has an interesting location across from the Tenement Museum --a museum worth checking out. The neighborhood has nice architecture and some semblance of what new york was before it was bought out by corporate conglomorates. But don't be fooled by LittleGiant which is kind of like that store "Anthropologie"---designed to look old time, vintage and authentic, but everything's made in China. Actually, to compare Little Giant to Anthroplogie is unfair to that store . Better to compare it to McDonald's spin off salad selections...designed to appeal to the "healthy market" while still being 100% trash.

Thr food AT Little Giant was AWFUL. The trout was clearly defrosted and the brussel sprouts were oozing with sugar. The portions were small and it was a totally depressing environ. Very West Elm/IKEA.

Avoid this one.

Looks like a lot of other folks have had problems, but I'm so confused by that - every time I go, the waitstaff is so cool and really attentive, the food rocks my world, and its never crazy loud.

Get the brussel sprouts. That is a sentence I never thought I'd say, but seriously, they are amazing.

Planned dinner here friday with the girls cuz we had a birthday party to get to nearby...should've stayed at little giant! it was really fun; great food (think yummy sausage that's just a little bit sweet with carmelized onion and spicy fruit mustardas - so tasty), great music, great drinks. all around a great spot. the only thing that could have made it better is if we didn't have to rush out and skip dessert - next time!

Well...hmmm....The food showed up cold. The owner came by and I mentioned this and she rolled her eyes. She then went to bar to complain about this (with in ear shot). Should have left right there and then. The waitress actually seemed embarressed and was nice about it (feel bad for her working for that chef/owner). The food came back warmed (ish!). Then the bad smell from down stairs plumbing/kitchen wafted up. This place is a joke. And expensive. I join the consensus that Little Giant falls in the catagory of "obnoxious" "expensive" and "bad."

I came here for the second time and was impressed again. everything on the menu looked great. ended up ordering a perfectly dressed arugula/blood orange salad with blue cheese, impeccably cooked sea trout, a smooth and creamy parsnip puree (though perhaps a bit too sweet), and phenomenal buttery roasted brussel sprouts. finished with very rich chocolate bread pudding with cream and blueberries. decor is not fancy (think finished plywood) but certainly adequate for the neighborhood. not sure why people are panning this restaurant... it is definitely worth a visit.

my beau brought me to this restaurant for valentine's day and we had such a nice time. The the food was really great, the music was perfect, service was very sweet, and the room was full of flowers. it was the perfect low key romantic setting...our favorite part was that they didn't force us to order some crazy prix fixe menu just because it was a holiday. it seemed like they were just doing their usual thing and that really worked for us. there were a couple of cute little touches that you could tell they did just for the occassion, but otherwise it was just a really great wednesday night. Exactly what we'd hoped for!

Exactly what we'd hoped for!

.

Duck confit needs to be great, and Little Giant's version was eighty percent fat and overly salty. My friend has the chicken liver mousse, which had to be sent back. Cocktails small and VERY over priced. Poor dining experience, not recommended.

We chose little giant because of the neighborhood, which we were interested in exploring. Most of the other places were packed last Thursday, so by default we ended up at little giant which I'd heard was uneven, but we felt glad to get a table in such bad weather. It was not uneven. It was in fact very even across the board.....just dreadful. The service was poor and they have a pricey minimum., boring food, small portions.

Got a recommendation from a friend to take a young lady to Little Giant if I really want to show her a good time. Well, I wanted to wait for the right girl. I finally went this week. right girl, right restaurant, right night! Everything was pretty close to perfect. What can I say? The food was killer, the tunes were rocking, the service made us feel comfortable right from the start, and the drinks loosened us up to have a really great night. My date dug it ...and me ; ) A great tip that I am happy to pass along to others: this is a great date spot.

My wife and I were utterly embarressed to have taken our out of town guests to this disappointing place. The service was slow and the food was cold and expensive. It's rare to find such bad. Too bad, because the location/size of the joint is good. It's a poor man's Prune (NOT to be confused with a step down from Prune...because Little Giant is about twenty FLIGHTS below Prune).

Duh! You've already posted this one. it was only a month ago. Have you already forgotten? maybe it's hard to remember because you wrote it under another username. Aren't you sick of this little game yet? If not, it only serves as a testament to your stupidity. Get a life (or target another restaurant). If you've got an axe to grind Little Giant's phone number is listed. Call them. This is not what this site is for. You are doing a disservice to what could otherwise be a useful forum.

I love this place. I never write reviews (this is my first) and I'm a GUY...we don't just go home after dinner and write a cute review. However, I am compelled to do so because I had such a nice evening and have read all these nasty things on CitySearch (much to my surprise). Someone told me that CitySearch actually writes there own "bad" reviews if the corresponding restaurants dont pay them. Is that true? Isn't that weird? Anyway, try out the Little Giant. It is definitely a good date spot and the food is great. I didn't meet the owners but I heard they are sweet as pie.

Pros: great food

Cons: lower east side

I live on the upper east side, and make time at least 3 times a month to dine at the Little Giant. I absolutley love it because it makes me crave things! I go home thinking, "geez, I NEED that pickle plate!", and no, I'm not pregnant! The chicken liver mousse is outstanding and although I have only had one of the entrees (which was great-duck!), I still go back to enjoy the stunning ambience and welcoming attitude of the staff. I guess I would say that I am a "regular" at this point, but I normally don't write food comments like this (I've heard that this site is biased and that the owners write their own false comments). I just wanted to stand up and say how much I like this place; I can tell from some of the comments that they are a total joke, they talk about food that the restaurant hasn't served in a year! Hmmm....I wonder how political this site really is...kind of makes me sick.

wow! we thought it was odd when Little Giant started to receive a rash of reviews focusing on dishes they haven't served for almost two years. We also found it interesting that so many reviews focused on the exact same themes, often even using the same verbage ('uninspired' seems to be an ironic favorite). Now you've outdone yourselves...you have plagiarized an entire review from another website!!!! impressive work! Too bad it's from april of 2005 and they no longer serve a single item mentioned. 'A' for effort though. And the typos you've inserted really add something new. They make the review feel fresh again. You should be proud.

Kind of bland meal with prices too high for the lower east side. i've had better meals else where and cannot recommend LittleGiant. It;s hardly worth what you pay for and the vibe is better at the pickle shop down the street.

Not impressed. Over-priced drinks and the "swine of the week" was not prepared well, Finished off with
sticky toffee pudding was ..sickly sweet. In general, over priced. I actually thought our server was refreshingly nice but the food just wasnt worth the price for taste and atmosphere.

I smiled when I read the customer reviews of Little Giant because I agree that the place is positively dreadful . This is Manhattan...home to some of the best restaurants in world--from down home cooking to high end, to funky ethnic to chic and low key.

Little Giant offers nothing. It's menu is uninspired, and the ingredients tasted like they were bought at Western Beef (including the vegetables!). Service was sloppy and slow, servings cold and small, the restaurant was unattractive, and the flavors were remarkably devoid of taste. Prices were high to boot.

I am joining the consensus of people who not just had a bad meal there, but strongly advise avoiding this place at all costs.

It takes attention for a place, esp a small place, to stay sharp and Little Giant. has apparently been skipping, as I have heard really bad things about the place since having my own bad meal there. Everything from the service to the food was mediocre at best. the food was NO WHERE NEAR what I'd consider good enough for this kind of a place at relatively high (esp. for the LES) prices. Meat dishes particularly bad (think: grizzle). Expensive, with service which was aggressive (ie: 'our apps are small, suggesting getting several more', 'no sides come with that, get more', 'that medium priced wine is not good, get this $70 bottle instead'). Over all, the place felt like a sham and the food was awful.

I lived on the same block as Little Giant for a year, and after trying it on many occasions, I can honestly say it just isn't very good. Its overpriced, the menu is chock full of boring tasteless fare, and the owners are hostile.

Yeah, I know that Little Giant doesn't serve breakfast, but I just re-heated some pork and a biscuit leftover from ny awesome dinner last night, and...I think it was even better this morning, if that is possible. They gave me reheating instructions so the biscuit was just as tender and flaky today as it was last night and it was umm umm good! I'll be checking them out for brunch very soon. The rest of our meal was also great and my friends anad I had a really nice time. all around, a total winner! We will all be back.

I had heard mixed things about this place but I thought I'd try it. Big mistake....we spent way too much on bad food. Will never, ever return. You know what they say about places that serve tiny portions at high prices with nasty service? Answer=Little Giant.

My fiance and i had a great dinner here last weekend!! Our friends have been recomending Little Giant forever but we live in morningside heights and had just never made the trip down to the lower east side. When we got engaged last month they gave us a gift certificate and we finally had to try it. Better late than never!!! it was soooo good (thank you guys!). We had great sauasage and beet salad to start and then scallops and a duck confit special (both were melt in your mouth and the duck had a great crispy skin...a little bit salty, but not annoyingly so). We didn't have much room for dessert so we just split the sticky toffee pudding (they made us promise we'd have it) and it was heavenly!! We'd make the trip again just for that. the food, drinks, service, and feel of this place are just great. we will definitely be back

I was really disappointed in the pasta dish I had and the deviled eggs were pretty bland. Cocktails were over priced. Like another reviewer mentioned, I some cleanliness issues. My cutlery was not clean and the bathroom ventilation was distinct at my table, which was near the downstairs. When I asked for a table switch, I was told that it was "impossible" since I had no reservation. We left, and I have no intention on going back. Did not eat there.

Little Giant is one of my go-to dinner destinations. I've been over ten times since they opened a few years ago, and i think it keeps getting better. I don't know what other people on this site are talking about. They must be haters or competition b/c my girlfriend and I love this place. I've done business dining here too and they've never disappointed. The menu changes often and we can always count on the freshest produce and flavorful combinations. My girlfriend is a vegetarian and they always make special accomodations for her. Comfort food at it's best! The portions are large and we always leave with a full belly. For a small restaurant, they have a large, thoughtful wine list, with lots of selection around $40/btl. The vibe is fun and cozy, good music, lots of windows and candlelight. I love this place and can't wait to go back!

Couldn't stand the food or the attitude at this place, It is particularly annoying because it TRIES to be like August, Prune, Blue Hill or Savoy (all great, very unique small local places). BUT the food here is awful! Really serve cold, bad food. Unimaginative, except for the names on the menu which sound "cute". When the dish (eventually) comes, you'll feel like you are eating airplane food. The Bershire Pork was sub-par meat. This is some of the WORST food in NYC. . Wine list was ok (though over priced).

Uncomfortable seating and nasty waitstaff. Let's hope they aren't around for too much longer. Pretentious! Expensive! Bland! Save your $ and go somewhere good (even Barrio Chino or Schiller.s up the block are tastier). Scratch that, ANYWHERE is better.

This restaurant is part of the mallization of Manhattan.

My girlfriend and I discovered Little Giant and year ago and have returned regularly. The place continues to grow and prosper. I have taken friends and family as well as clients and the place never disappoints. "Swine of the week" is a sure winner. The drink menu changes with the seasons (rhubarb margueritas in the summer are memorable).
Service is friendly and the owners are charming and involved.
I highly recommend Little Giant.
