so that should explain everything.

Pros: closed

Cons: they were ever opened

.

My husband and I went 4 dinner We were seated promptly when we entered The food was cheap for the area and better than most other diners I have gone to. The serving size was also huge... and we could not finish it all (I had a vegetarian omlet and my husband had a grat stake). The service was ok. I would come back again.

Pros: original atmosphere

The last time we ordered we called at 8:30pm & ordered two pieces of pie, a piece of cake & a soda. At 9:30, when the food still hadn't arrived, we called to check to make sure it was on it's way-we were told it was and should be there momentarily. When it still hadn't arrived at 9:50 we called back to check on the status. A man answered the phone and he was shocked, saying that we "never placed the order" and that he was the only person answering the phone that night so he would KNOW if someone placed that order. We explained that we definitely placed the order, and called just 20 minutes prior to check on it. He started yelling, telling us that there was "NO WAY." It was ludicrous. He finally asked us if we wanted him to send us the pies or not, and I said yes, please. He refused to believe this was some mistake on their part, and acted as if he was doing us a favor by sending over the desserts. When I hung up, I was kind of shocked, I told my roommate what had happened and she decided that she no longer wanted her food. I called back, (someone else answered the phone) and I asked to speak to a manager. The angry man picked up the phone again and said he was the owner. He started shouting at me from the start this time. He said that we were playing games with him- that we had "just called back" and said thank you for sending the pies so quickly. He wouldn't let me speak, but I tried to explain that no, we hadn't received the desserts nor did we call to thank them just seconds before. He continued to scream at me for about ten minutes. We finally just hung up. I think this was possibly a case of either a forgotten order or maybe a mix up with the delivery? Who knows. I don't understand the reason that the "owner" of the restaurant would get so violently angry over a small mistake like this (that was CLEARLY their fault). It could have easily been solved with an apology and a promise to send our food right away.

Pros: Good beer fries

Cons: Horrible and verbally abusive owner, refuses to take responsibility for bad service

I went here for breakfast/brunch recently. The decor is nice on the inside and despite reading all the bad reviews, we found the service to be acceptable. Our food came out quickly and it was good. I had the goat cheese and spinach omelet. It wasn't the best I've ever had but again this is no fine dining establishment. My guest had the pancakes and they were very good. I would go back here any time I was seeking a diner-type place to go eat.

Me and my two girlfriends went to the cup on Saturday night. I was not impressed to much with the food but one of my girlfriends seems to have a small crush on the very nice blond guy who we think is either the owner or the manager. Rebecca is kind of shy and when I said that the food was not really that great, she said to me, but isn't he really cute? He is but the food does need to be better no matter how much she likes the guy.

Cons: need better quality of food

First off, the food was really good. my order was taken quickly and my food came pretty fast. portions are huge. I have to say the the manager Joe ( upon who's name I asked ) was fantastic. He came over and asked me and my girlfriend how everything was and if we were satisfied with all. He was really genuine, not like some other fakes who act like they care. Joe approached quite a few tables and this was something customers really appreciate. The food was good and the service was superb. Five stars for the cup. As good as it gets as far as I am concerned.

Pros: GREAT SERVICE. MANAGER WAS FANTASTIC

Cons: NONE THAT I SAW

CUP DINER is a great name, but they should consider calling it "MUG" because that's what your coffee will be served in.

Our waiter, a young guy who's name we think was Steve told us that they got rid of the large cups we used to love. The good news is they seem to have updated the menu and the staff, keeping the good and improving on some favorites. Hint: ORDER THE MAC & CHEESE!!

Service seems to have improved greatly, although the manager always looked as if he was about to panic when people came in. Actually he was funny to watch, and he seemed very friendly.

My friends and I have been going to Cup off-and-on for a few years now and aside from a few aloof kids who work at night, the staff is the best its been. The guy at the take out counter was friendly AND fast, a combination you don't find often. Our waiter, Steve (we think his name was Steve, the name on our check said Sabrina) kept our coffee filled and was attentive without being overbearing. Never had to wait for a beer either.

The food was well prepared and ono the table in a decent amount of time. Be sure to remind them that cole slaw is included with your burger though, or you're not likely to see it. We might spend more time at the bar too because its right near the train and close to work for a lot of us.

Overall, The Cup is a great place to go for lunch or dinner or after a movie or even for a couple of beers or drinks.

Recommended. And ask for the waiter named "Sabrina."

I haven't been to cup in a while and they changed alot! It looks like lite bites in there(the signs and cooler display.) Where did this random snack cooler come from and why is it stocked with fruit cups? what happened to the fun staff? Where is the manager? Where is an Owner? Who's idea was the neon lights? I have to say the way cup was before 2 or 3 years ago it was great. I remember they were involved in the community with art and live music perfomances. Now they are just another place with an odd cooler full of fruitcups. I have to agree with people though, The service inexperienced, the food is wierd, and the place is dirty, REALLY DIRTY!!!!!!

Cons: Don't like it anymore

This place has really gone down the tube. First of all, with the exception of a few servers that are actually adults, the staff is very young and inexperienced. Most of them don't care about the customers needs. They take and order and forget you. They seem to be more conserned about text mesaging on there cell phones. The only bartender that knows how to make a drink is the one that works on friday nights.
I was there during the week and ordered a Dry martini and it was made with triple sec. The bathrooms are filty also.I think the major problem is the lack of management. what a shame.

My husband and I went to cup for breakfast. We were seated promptly when we entered but the place was cold. I had to wear my jacket until I ordered a coffee to warm up...which arrived in a huge cup...hence, the name. the food was cheap for the area and better than most other diners I have gone to. The serving size was also huge... and we could not finish it all (I had a vegetarian omlet and my husband had pancakes). The service was sub-par. The place was fairly empty (we went on a tuesday) but we still had to call our server over to wait on us. She was friendly but dim-witted as she forgot to place my order for extra toast. These things happen though. I would come back again.

Pros: cheap, good food for a diner

Cons: Service, temperature

.

Pros: food is usually good. great selection from burgers to pasta to omelettes. great setting with lots of space and light. comfortable seating.

Cons: service is terrible. i've gone about 15 times because i live one block away. almost all of those times, i've gotten poor service. the staff is not rude, just not attentive. a number of times, i've stood there waiting to be seated while staff members chatted amongst themselves ignoring me.

Overall: still better than average. not the greatest dining experience but the food quality and selection makes me go back. if you're not afraid to be pushy and demand service, then this shouldn't bother you too much. otherwise, go visit one of the many other restaurants in the area.

After reading all the bad reviews... I had to post.

4am Friday night. Great food, excellent service. I'd highly recommend. Maybe they're doing something to turn the place around.

We've eaten there quite a few times for brunch and dinner. Except for a couple of slow serves when they were really busy, it is a good spot with food that is much better than the average diner.

This was the worst dining experience I've ever had. I've never had such bad service before, I put all the blame on the management. My brother ordered crabcakes benedict, had to send them back twice because the were over cooked. Mind you we had to grab the manager to get them the second time. I ordered a fruit salad which I never got, we never got the juices we ordered. Never got our coffee refilled. So, when we asked for a manager...... He tells us that our waitress is dying of the flu. Then he tells us that we should have grabbed him ten minutes earlier, and to never wait around for bad service. He put the blame on us for getting bad service.

The food was ok but my phone order was frieghtning. Sitting here at work and was just hungry looking through the menus. I saw that CUPS had a big burger for a fair price so I called them up. Wish I didn't do that. The snob waitress that answered the phone spoke to me as if I owed her something. She was very very nasty, short and distasteful. BAD ATTITUDE. When I called up the first thing I sayed was that I wanted to use a credit card. She was putting so much energy into being smart and rushing my order that she hung up the phone without even asking for the card number. If a customer calls your restaurant with a credit card order are you not supposed to ask them for the information. I also requested that no pickle or cole slaw be included in my order. When I called her back to give her the number she sayed "I don't read minds...umm humm" . Very stink and nasty, almost bit my head off through the phone. For this reason alone I will never order from this place again and I will definitely never visit the place. Queens is full of joints with better service and more courteous people. I plan to visit only to complain to the manager. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I want to love Cup, really I do - but the service and general attitude of their waitstaff is so awful that it kills it for me. Generally speaking the place isn't that bad - the food is very good and it's affordable, but week after week it's the same thing. Their staff are younger kids with bad attitudes. If they're not dumb, they're mean.

I've spoken to a manager there on a few occasions (he's younger and very cool) and explained my thoughts and he agrees - his staff is no good. He blames his management (ironic) but nonetheless... I order delivery only.

I live in the neighborhood so I have eaten there and gotten take out quite a few times. I love the food but the service leaves something to be desired. I agree with a previous review that admitted you can't expect too much from teenagers, and I suspect the review that claims the waiters aren't teenagers IS a waiter at Cup, and a teenager! Service is very slow which is sometimes ok, but you have to read your table. I once ate there and was passed off to another waitress without being told - so that me and my party were waiting for refills and to order more courses without knowing who to go to. We actually had to get up and find someone twice. That kind of thing should not happen - their take-out person also seems preoccuppied but that's another story I guess.

I love their fries - I prefer the steak but the curly is good too! I also love their grilled cheeses and their iced coffee (though probably not together!)

IThis place has seen better days.
mediocre at best, service is really bad except for a few servers. The bathrooms could stand a good cleaning and maybe some toilet paper in the ladies room.
the food is a spin of the whell, sometimes good sometimes not so good.
I would not recomend this place

Went to the Cup yesterday for lunch. Made the mistake of ordering the nicoise salad with seared tuna, and asked for it rare (the typical temp for seared tuna). The tuna was genuinely terrifying- a bizarre consistency and color that seemed like it was literally squeezed out of a tube!! Yuck! The curly fries are great, they'll melt cheese on them if you ask, and they are tasty. Maybe my mistake for ordering "restaurant fare" at a diner. Don't make the same mistake!

I only come to CUP for their brunch. I always order their crab cakes eggs benedict with curly fries. It's soooo good that it's addicting. They also have other great selections such as their omelets, french toast and their fresh juices. You gotta go there just to try it, it's well worth the trip! I went a few times for dinner and their food and menu selection is just average. It's weird but their brunch menu are all delicious but disappoints on their dinner.

This used to be one of my favorite places to eat in my neighborhood, good food, great prices and brunch or dinner it was great. My boyfriend and I would often sit at the bar and chat away to the friendly Irish bar man Tom.
Something has happened and it is going downhill. Went in for breakfast on Saturday and it was empty where it is usually crowded, the waitress messed up thr order, the food was cold and tasteless and the whole vibe of the place was just awful. The staff were just standing around lokoing bored and it seems that the few tables around us were also unhappy with their service.
What happened? Where's the old Cup I knew and loved?!

CUP has changed their menu from what it was when they originally opened, when I tried them once and didn't go back for over a year. Gone are the weirdly gourmet options, replaced with more traditional diner fare - breakfast served all day, many pages of menu items. So far I've tried 3 items on the new menu and everything is delicious! I highly recommend the chicken parmigiana focaccini, the CUP House salad, and the quesadilla. The curly fries are yummy too. A knitting group meets there in the back on Wednesday evenings, so it's great for groups. The decor has cool vintage Astoria memorabilia on the walls too. Staff is friendly, prompt, and NOT teenagers.

Had some meals that were good. Some meals were very poor. Had roast beef sandwich which was cold. Once when I ate dinner at bar there were Victoria Screte magazines on the bar. Had burgers 3 times. Twice the burgers were very good, the other time it was awful-more like an uncooked meatball.

Problem is staff is teenagers. Can't expect more from them. Get some professional.

My wife and I went here while perusing the Museum of the Moving Image across the street, having gotten a recommendation from the staff there. Let me tell you, that was bad advice. First, the waitress messed up my grilled cheese, leaving the tomato out even though I specified it(it is on the menu that way). Then, the waitress gave my wife coffee with regular milk in it even though my wife specifically requested Soy Milk. Granted, this isn't Starbucks, but is such a request really too hard to get right? Also, the food, the service, and the change from the bill were all quite slow considering how empty the place was.

Best burgers and curly fries in the area, super-friendly and helpful waitstaff, nice fun casual atmosphere... and enough options on the menu to suit any taste! The helpings are more than generous - they pour the biggest cup of coffe I've ever seen - and everything on the menu is good, home-style cooking. I've never once been disappointed! (And they have free delivery - excellent!) Perfect place for a meal before a trip to the Museum of the Moving Image or a movie at the Kaufman-Astoria.

Pros: Great value, Friendly staff, Good eats

My husband and I love this place for its atmosphere and its friendly service. We have been there for both lunch and dinner and have enjoyed it. The menu is simple and it also has changed over the year to make it more exciting. My hubby LOVES his cup of Jose. It is a great place to relax after work. Not too boring or yuppified like other places in this up and coming neighborhood. I have lived in Astoria all my life and this is a nice little addition to the area. One problem is parking is sometimes difficult.

The menu is confused... I dont know what they were thinking. Have been here for dinner and breakfast. The portions are like a buffett for breakfast. TOO MUCH THAT IT IS GROSS! Dinner, there is nothing that eye-catching. have been here few times to support a friend, but not my choice of venue.

Good Restaurant and Great New addition to Astoria. Most dishes are very YUMMY and a very good value. The only complaints are that the PANCAKES yes pancakes seem to be the only bad thing on the menu. Chef tried to get too fancy with these. AND, the waitstaff likes to lick its fingers when cutting cakes/pies and serves hot and cold drinks by holding the glass or cup around the brim/top. Not something you want to see in the place you are dining. They are friendly though and the atmosphere is good. Management should correct these few problems though - as they are deal-breakers to many.

Cons: Waitstaff Etiquette, Small Drinks, Management Scarse

Been here twice so far and both times it has been a pleasant experience. The waitstaff was very friendly even after requesting a different beverage --and the food was very good. The Ambience is ok...It's not my favorite type of atmosphere but I can see how a lot of people would like it--big-industral feel mixed in with old school 50s diner appeal. Booths are more comfy than tables (like everywhere else)--and the place has many drinks to choose from due to the in house bar. See it becomming one of my favorite late night spots to grab a bite to eat.

i went to cup 3 times in a month and a half time period. the place looks cool, but the food is not really that good. first time i went there, they messed up my gf's order. second time, i got my omlette filled with unmelted cheese. third time i went with a group of people. they messed up the orders so badly that half of the table didn't eat what they got because it was so bad. after waiting 40 minutes for our food, they didn't even compensate us for the meals that weren't eaten. every time i went there, i was in there for at least 30 minutes before i got my food. all 3 times it was a simple saturday afternoon brunch. i highly suggest avoiding this terrible place.

My husband and I really enjoyed our Friday night meal here. It wasn't quite a date atmosphere - more like a group-of-friends sort of place. But the portions were huge, the decor and atmosphere was bustling and cool, adn the service was prompt and friendly. Avoid the cupcakes, though, they weigh a ton!

I thought I would try this out since it's close to where I live and the reviews were ok. Unfortunately I tried it for the first time on a Friday night. the wait for a table was very short but then we were ignored for quite a while. I got one of their famous 12 oz. burgers and it was way to dry and over cooked. But the service was friendly and the portions big. Nice place to go mid day for lunch, but i would skip the busy dinner hour if I were you.

My partner and I went yesterday with a friend of ours and were really impressed. First of all, the place is HUGE! It's like walking into a place anywhere but in the 5 boroughs. The tables are pretty far from one another, the food was great (and a great value!) and the waitstaff was attentive and quick. We will definitely be back there again soon!

We went to CUP last night. As we were being seated my friend asked for a booth and the hostess said I cannot sit you there its for 3 or more. As I just glanced at the empty booths and booths filled with only 2 patrons she sarcastically said and I quote "You may see only two people sitting there, but I am not going to sit you there because its not right, its just not right!" she then proceeded to sit couples in the booths for the rest of our time there.
Too weird for me. The waitress was nice though.

I've been to Cup twice, both times after visiting the American Museum Of The Moving Image right across the street, and have been impressed enough to wish I had a place like that in Williamsburg, where I live. Granted, we have similar retro-chic restaurants over in W'Burg, but few are as neighborhood-friendly (in terms of service) and as wallet-friendly (in terms of food quality). Cup definitely seems less of a diner than just a great hip neighborhood restaurant without the pretensions of a hipster joint. Service is efficient and super friendly, and the food is really great - I recommend the steak au poivre and buffalo chicken wings! It's a bit of a jaunt if you don't live in the immediate neighborhood, but I can't wait to be back.

Whether you live in Astoria or not, you must go to the Cup Diner. What a fanstastic addition to the neighborhood. The food, first, is wonderful. Must have the fried calamari, the Astoria potpie and the steak au poivre. Desserts, also are amazing, especially the apple pie and banana cream. The staff is so friendly and the price is right, even on alcohol (oh, the sangria is the best in NYC). I also love the decor - very open space, very clean and retro 50's meets hip diner chic. I will be back again and again.
