Horrible Experience

by Asilver

What a waste of 84 dollars. I got there and the masseuse didn't even ask my name or offer hers, she didn't ask me if i had any medical problems or aches that she should be aware of, she did not ask me about the type of pressure i like all she did was get on top of my back and press down hard.
I was soooo disturbed that I want to call the manager and get my money back!

Pros: nice looking place

Cons: completely unprofessional

wow!!

by runrun34

I go here all the time, and If you want a quick, in-and-out massage, that's fine, but i'd recommend giving yourself some extra time to enjoy the beautiful steam room and igloo sauna. there's no limit to how much time you can spend there, and i found that the massage is much better if you've relaxed for a while in the steam and heat. loosens the muscles and makes your mind more tranquil.

I usually get the combo massage/body scrub. we all know what a massage is, but have you ever had one of these body scrubs?? they're incredible. it's not that the treatment itself if luxurious or anything, but afterward you'll want everyone to touch your skin, because it's so unbelievably fresh and soft!

afterward i take another long hot shower and relax again in the sauna and steam rooms. so relaxing!

this place is great. they're very sweet and the prices are a steal, which is good, because i'm addicted to the body scrubs....

Regal Treatment

by tooluv

At some spas you feel sort of like a commodity, like you're part of an indifferent relaxation machine. Know what i mean? Like the staff is just going through the motions. But at Athena i felt like a VIP from beginning to end (why did it have to end??) and I had such a relaxing, luxurious time.

The steam room is beautiful and the showers and everything else is immaculate. At first I wasn't sure what to make of the igloo sauna--I'd never seen anything like it before--but after 5 minutes I was hooked. Even after my massage I went back inside for a long time to let the warm floor relax my back even more. Oh yeah, the massage was wonderful. She was really attentive and skilled, and I can't remember getting a better massage, especially for such a reasonable price.

Next time I'm going to try the body scrub.

by DLover

My office is in the area and one of my coworkers told me to check this place out - I went for a there for a massage during my lunch hour and am so relaxed right now theres no way Im going to do any work for the rest of the day! Instead Im just going to sit here and play on the internet! The people at Athena were friendly, price was reasonable and most importantly, the massage was wonderful.

Great Experience

by cmb9977

SInce reading about this spa on citysearch Ive gone back twice - First time by myself - I got an amazing massage and relaxed in the steam room for a bit - I thought the place was really clean and I had a relaxing afternoon so I just went back with my girlfriend a week ago for a couples massage - We were in a pretty big room side by side with nice music and candles - we both got a great massage which was followed by a delicious platter of fresh fruit - Afterwards we took advantage of the steam room as well as the hot igloo that they have in there (thats pictured above) - We had a great experience and totally plan to go back - wasnt that expensive and worth every penny -

Pros: Reasonable Price, Friendly Staff, Clean Facility, Variety of Services

DON'T GO HERE -- unless you want to waste money

by Revu4You

Quite frankly, I am shocked at how many good reviews this spa has gotten on this site and was fooled by them when I made an appt here. I went in for a 60-minute Swedish massage with my roommate on a Sunday night around 6pm. The place was completely empty. They escorted us to a "dressing room" to change and I use quotations because it was just an open area where everybody walks by that happens to have lockers. After explaining to the employees that my roommate and I (straight females) didn't want to get a couples massage, we were taken into separate rooms but the doors to the rooms were left open the entire time so we could hear each other talking. There wasn't any relaxing music. Normally, at professional salons, the masseuse will leave the room while you position yourself under the sheet but here, the woman insisted on helping you take your robe off and back on (again -door open) and stayed in the room which was very awkward and unneccessary. The massage, if I can even call it that, was by far the worst I have ever gotten. It basically consisted of her just pressing down on my body over the sheet. Then after 20 minutes of that, it consisted of her bending my arms and legs in strange ways and then pressing down on my body over the sheet. At one point, she CLIMBED ON TOP OF ME and straddled me while I was laying face down in the bed! THERE WASN'T EVEN ANY OIL USED until the last 3 minutes where she worked on my back but even that was awful and unrelaxing because her little hands were massaging way too quickly (felt more like pinching). Afterwards, they help you put your robe back on (WEIRD) and escort you to sit in the steam room but I was so freaked out, I couldn't get out of there fast enough. My roommate had the same bad experience. This is the first time I've ever written any sort of review as I usually give places the benefit of the doubt and hardly find use in complaining, but really wanted to warn people of how unprofessional this place is

Pros: Moderately Priced, Late hours, Not busy, Accepts Walk-ins

Cons: Everything Else

Athena was amazing

by toolips

I had the best experience at Athena. The atmosphere was inviting and cozy, and I felt completely comfortable. Both the dry sauna and the steam sauna were heavenly. My massage was fabulous, I had a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders walking in for my appointment and felt 100 times better on my way out. I will go back to Athena for my next massage.

The most relaxed and pleasant I have felt in a long time!

by colorfulshirt

This was by far the best spa I have ever been to anywhere, including Miami and Los Angeles. The staff were so sweet and friendly and attentive; I felt like royalty. I entered in a daze of tension and left feeling completely rejuvenated with table shower, body scrub and 1 hour shiatsu massage. The pristine surroundings are cozy and spacious, the igloo steam room refreshing and every square inch of the place is impeccably scrubbed. I'm still glowing! Go there now.

The best place in NYC

by Minola2507

Amazing, Amazing and again Amazing! I've been to so many spas in the city starting from upscale Red Door to underground parlors in Chinatown, but I I tell you as a fact, this place rocks!!! I took their special of 1.5 hour body scrub and massage for $100, and was surprised with the finest perfomance of massuse/scrubber... it felt like I was getting $400-$500 treatment in top noch spa. This place features a steam room, showers, magical massage tables and a jade sana. The Korean workers are super friendly and nice. The place is clean and fancy. Go there now!

Pros: Quality service for pennies

Cons: they wash your body in milk as well!

Excellent Massage and Beautiful Spa

by genevieve2534

I was surprised my girlfriend for her birthday when I took her to this spa. I have never seem a spa as big as this. We were escorted by a beautiful hostess the minute we arrived into a VIP Couple Room. We enjoyed wonderfully hot Dry sauna which calls Hwangto Igloo and steam first. Then we had a massage and a body treatment. They had hostesses serving us throughout the whole time. The whole staff was very attentive. We spent 3 unbelievable hours at the spa! The service was impeccable! Being a spa junkie, this is definitely the best spa that I've been to.

The beautifully decorated and soothing atmosphere of New Athena Spa keeps me coming back to this great spa. Therapist there are warm, friendly. The prices are very reasonable, especially for massage and scrub and it's so much more relaxing than the other over-crowded Spa places in the area. I highly recommend checking this out. Such a great experience and relaxing...

amazing massage experience!!

by js4evax84

My boyfriend bought me a gift certificate to the spa. It was very impressed with the service. I have gone to a lot of spas and had a lot of massages and this is the best experience to date. I came out feeling physically and mentally relaxed. First off, the spa is beautiful, clean and so comfortable. The massage therapist found sore spots that even I didn't know I had and the immense fountain set the tone to my massage and kept my mind off the rest of the world. I also had a mini facial and their products were great.
I will definitely go back when I need to treat myself to an exquisite moment of relaxation. Enjoy!

Horrible massage!!!

by nylagirl7

OMG! I have had soo many massages in my life, but never one as bad as this. The masseuse did not seem to know what she was doing. I am not even sure she has a license because she was massaging me in areas that were causing me extreme pain and discomfort. I always get "Deep Tissue" massages but never one like this. She was super rough and fast to the point of discomfort. Her energy was super aggressive. Let's just say I had to tell her several time to "please slow down." I was looking forward to it ending that is how bad it was. I can't believe I paid $100 bucks for this awful massage. Nver again! Please don't make the same mistake I did...go somewhere else.

Pros: None

Cons: Unskilled massage staff...horrible massages

Best Pedicure EVER!!

by tina17

Due to being a ballet dancer for a long time, I have always suffered from "ingrown" toe nails. My foot doctor from UES had recommended Grace at Athena for my particular problem. When Grace worked on my pedicure, it hurted a bit but afterwards, I DO NOT SUFFER from my ingrown toe nails. I can wear whatever shoes I want to w/out worrying about being in pain. Thank you GRACE so much for your help!!!

Pros: best pedicure!

Just awful

by syviespecial99

I am in shock after reading the previous review. How anyone can say anything good about this horrible place is beyond me! I have been an avid spa goer for years and after getting a "gift" last month (the gift giver is now on my s--t list) I can honestly say that this was clearly the worst spa experience I have ever had. The place is crass, loud noise from the loud talking, non-english speaking staff, rude and unfriendly front desk and above all the worst therapist(s) I have ever been to. My skin is still red and dry from the horrid facial, and the massage was a joke. If anyone thinks this is the place to go, be my guest and have the rude awakening that I did.The facial was a joke and the therapist stinks from the odor of cigarette smoke . Be Warned!!!

Pros: poor services,untrained staff

Cons: Beyond words

Amazing service, Great value, Friendly staff

by ladyday1981

Athena Spa was a delightful surprise. The staff was friendly and attentive from the moment my boyfriend and I walked in the door (for our couples package). We had a similar service at Juvenex( considered their top competitor) and Athena spa blew them away. From the decor the the expert hands and friendly nature of the staff. The value and service is amazing despite the small price tag. Whether you go there for a sauna and steam or you get "the works", Athena spa will not let you down

Pros: Friendly and skilled staff, Lovely decor,Lots of extras, Total pampering

Cons: you will be so relaxed you may forget your name

Heavenly Place and best service

by young1e

I just got back from my winter vacation and really needed to get a massage and facial. When i walked into athena spa, everyone was very friendly and atmosphere was beautiful. SO much different then the other spas I've been to where they could care less if you enjoy yourself. A deep tissue with lava stone massage was really great. After staying in igloo for while , my next stop was to get a facial. I had AHA facial after staying in cold my skin was so dryed. After the facial my skin got back to normal days. I will go back to athena spa to get a facial and massage.

Worst service

by christy33

Bar none this was the worst service I ve ever got anywhere. Sometime you better off going with what you know. I decided to try Athena spa but got nothing except frustration
1. Very noisy setting
2. Therapist stopped massage to answer the phone
3. No apologies when she returned from the phone call
4. Went back to answer the phone again
5. Still no apologies.
6. Now stopped massage to help the front desk client

You get the picture? This happened over and over until I decided I have had enough and just left frustrated.

HORRIBLE, WORST WORST, DIRTY

by eatdrinkny

i must say athena spa was the WORST spa experience in my life. The moment I walked in, the receptionist does not say "hi" and just stared at me. Very unfriendly and rude.
This place is expensive, especially for manicure and pedicure - BUT they don't do any better than regular nail salon. They have really poor service. The pedicure tub was full of dirt. It's really gross. The toilets dont flush. This place is absolutely absurd. This place ruined my whole day. I paid and I got treated like dirt from the rude receptionist to poor staff members.
PLEASE do not go here, save your money.

I went to get a body scrub at Athena's wetspa and it was the oddest spa experience ever. The showers and wetspa area are all communal. No dividers or curtains or anything. An old Asian woman I got the scrub from did not speak a word of English and performed the entire act in her old worn underwear!! I had to take two showers when I got home just to feel clean again.

Cleaned up!!

by sunnyworld

I have so much trouble with my skin so I went to many different spas for facials and demotalogists. However, I haven't seen any result from there. One of my friends suggested Athena spa, and I tried their facial with new treatment machine. After 5 facial sessions, every friend of mine asks how my skin cleared up. Plus, when I bought 10 sessions at once, they gave me 20% off. I'm going to keep going back for the facial!!! Thank you Athena a bunch!!

Pros: good facial

They gave me a Headache...

by lucyvasquez

I was escorted to a minature closet space. As I expained the points of greater interest, I heared a loud voice coming from the room next door, can you lower your voice! There was someone next door? and I was whispering! From that moment on...it was people talking load, drawers opening and closing...it was noisy and obtrusive rather then a heaven for relaxation! I got up off the bed 3 times and she kept saying listen to the music. I came out of it with a huge headache...and I was not given a discount, offered relief or any other freaking thing, except and huge bill and told that the usual tip was $20. Oh yeah, and that someone would call me to find out what happened. Huh?
I highly recommend you stay away from it! You could be next!

Very disappointing experience

by leewong26

Let's start with the receptionist could not locate my appointment, to 30 mins wait before I get my first treatment. The facial was a joke and the person did it either unprofessional or be licensed, no exfoliation/UV light for antibacterial after the extraction/no toner/eye cream after the facial. Best of all, the facialist was also the one who did my manicure and pedicure. She saved some lotion from the facial for my hand massage later!!
This place is a Joke. It was supposed to be a relaxing 'spa' experience and I walked away more tense and stressed than before. A definite waste of money, no matter how cheap their prices are.

Pros: low prices

Cons: low quality, bad service

Baby smooth skin

by kwongm138

I came here during Spa Week to try their Korean Body Scrub. Wow, what results! I have the most smoothest skin I've had since I was young... The steam room and scrub room is not for the shy however. You have to be comfortable being completely nude in front of the other strangers near you. If you can get past that, and the kind lady scrubbing you down, it will most certainly be well worth the short embarassment. Oh yes, laid down in the famous Igloo sauna afterwards... how relaxing! I would come back here again.

Pros: Korean Scrub, Cool Igloo Sauna

Cons: Not for the shy

Spa Week

by callisto

I had the Body Scrub for Spa Week. It is very intimidating because you're buck naked alongside other naked girls. But it was definitely worth the Spa Week prices for what you get. My skin felt baby soft afterwards. I would go back again for this treatment. I've never had this kind of experience before, but they definitely do a great job. The igloo is huge too! The people don't speak English that well, but can communicate for the most part.

Pros: Great Body Scrub, Evening Hours!, Nice facilities

Cons: Intimidating, Bad English

by sukijay

Take my word, skip this spa. There are much better places at similar or lower prices that actually produce results. My facial was a total waste of time and they hype out the Igloo that is nothing to write home about. Juvenex has a much better one and it is all jade. Plus the level of service is quite higher there. Well, I like to try all spas at least once in my hunt for best pampering spots. I will walk one more block and have my treatments at Oasis spa. Not Recommended

Less than professional service

by worldtrade00

A truly horrible experience from the bar handing out paper cups for the self-serve water cooler to the three women that were chatting it up in my brightly lit room during my facial. I was left on a table unattended for 20 to 30 minutes at a time each time a new treatment was put on my face, until I finally decided to get up and look for the woman to finish up so I could get out of there. All told, my 60 minute facial lasted 90 minutes, at least 70 of which I spent wondering if I had been forgotten. I left what was supposed to be a relaxing experience with a splitting headache and wondering how much longer a place like that could stay in business. DO NOT GO!!
