I had a terrible experience at 71 Irving The staff was rude, the place was overcrowded, and when I got my tea is was cold. My advice is to skip this spot and head over to The Tea Set, which in the West Village just west of Greenwich Ave. BuywithmeNYC has a great deal going on with The Tea Set you pay just $15 and get $30 worth of food/drinks, making it the perfect time to try out their great variety of organic teas! If you're not into teas, they have a great selection of champagnes, too. You can learn more about the deal here: htt://bit.ly/b5pi8b??. Enjoy!! =)

Recently placed a very simple order here for approximately 4 sandwiches. Upon arrival to pick up the order, the manager or woman who took my order yells ??Oh Shit I forgot about your order!? Keep in mind I called the day before to confirm the order would be ready by a specific time and I was told that they would be yet when I arrived that was the response I got.

Because my order was not ready, the sandwiches I ordered were thrown together very, very sloppily to the point that when I removed them from the packaging, not only were they not cut completely, but they fell apart with most of the ingredients falling out and ending up all over our fingers. To be honest these sandwiches looked like something a 4-year old put together and for over $70? You have got to be kidding. Will not frequent this place again- way overpriced and unprofessional.

Pros: Bakery items looked tasty

Cons: Staff- rude & unprofessional; Service/Sandwiches were sloppy

.

The staff is very rude and they rarely even look you in the eye. The coffee is very harsh and inconsistent. One time I asked the chubby faced face girl why the coffee was cold. She replied "because you have milk in it" Duh....a little milk should not make the coffee cold.
On many occasions I have had cold coffee. Why do I go? Because all the coffee places in the area have shut down. Tisserie, Barroco...

Bagels are decent and so are the pastries.

Pros: Nice atmosphere and good food

This is my go-to place. Meeting friends, after-dinner coffee, need to catch up on some work, Sunday brunch. Best coffee around. Always consistent. Good food: sandwiches, salads, yogurt, bagels, pastries. I highly recommend.

Pros: Excellent cup of coffee

Cons: Hard to get a seat sometimes

I live in the area and I keep returning to 71, although I can get coffee at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or the local Food Emporium. What makes this place outstanding is their coffee. period. Once you have a sip you will understand. Often the staff do have attitude, but I think when the manager is there like yesterday they were on their best behavior. ok, back to the coffee--the house coffee bursts in your mouth with layers of body and a beautiful aroma. It is also not overly strong like Starbucks. The sinful delight tastes like there is melted chocolate in it, although there is no syrup. The coffee beans are also locally (Hudson Valley) roasted and hand blended daily. I feel the scene is full of NYU students in graduate programs, professors and local businesspeople which make it fun to hang out. it is also away from the masses of union square. I often go there to relax, read a bit, meet a friend, people watch. All and all a great little hideaway.

Pros: Gourmet Coffee, Cool Scene

Cons: At times-attitude by cashiers

.

i live in the area and frequent the coffee shop (almost) daily. Although the coffee/drinks are consistent and good, most of the 71 Irving employees are so incredibly miserable. Look, there are 2 employees that I can think of that are actually pleasant/helpful, but most of the employees have a massive chip on their shoulder. It's like they forget they're in the service industry. If you hate your job (or deem yourself too worthy to be in the job you're in), please go do something else with your life... why should customers (paying a LOT of money for coffee and over-priced carbs) have to put up with your perpetually nasty attitude? Really, a lot of the women who work there are seriously mean... it's almost comical!

Pros: Location; cute atmosphere; coffee is reliable.

Cons: SERVICE!; baked goods are overpriced.

Let me start by saying I've been going to 71 Irving for years now... And always love it because it's a wonderful neighborhood joint.

However, more than 5 times, I've been given the wrong change---missing anywhere from a quarter to a $5 bill. The first few times I thought it could've been a mistake. However, now I'm convinced that it isn't.

This place has potential, unfortunately the rude staff ruines every visit. I live in the area and have tried it out many times and it's not an outlier experience. Every visit is the same. I wish they would change and tone down the attitude and I would come there every day, not once a quarter as now is the case. I doubt they will though considering that the place is always packed.

Pros: Coffee

Cons: Staff

.

The coffee is good, I should know cause I'm really picky about coffee. The staff is rude, I should know because I'm a member of the staff and they are rude to me. I'll smile when you come in though.

Oh PS the chicken salad is really good and made fresh

I never could tell the difference between the various coffee flavors at other shops - they were all rather bland to me - until I tried Sinful Delight at 71 Irving Place. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

Cons - could be a bit crowded. My friends and I almost gave up and left when a table finally freed up, and it was a lousy rainy day, too.

The coffee is not all that great, for the price, and, the staff is VERY rude!! the music is very loud and you have to scream in order for your friends to hear you! Don't even waste your time.

I live near 71 so it's convenient but that's all it has to offer. It's always crowded, the staff is indifferent to rude, the coffee is nothing special and everything is absurdly overpriced.

Pros: quaint location

Cons: everything else

71 is another place that has been over-hyped and overrated. The coffee is above average but not worth going out of your way for if there is a Starbucks closer. As for the menu items, they are way over-priced and of meager portions. As for the decor, the room is dark, small, and uncomfortable. Service is at the counter and basic. I guess this place is popular for those working on their resumes and looking to be seen but this is not a place to go if you are looking for a coffeehouse and a place to relax and read the newspaper in comfort.

Cons: coffee, prices, comfort, decor, service

My favorite coffee shop in the city where you don't feel like you are in the city! Great coffee, hot chocolate and fresh baked rice krispy treats. My favorite place to escape with my boyfriend on the weekends when we want a relaxing/cozy night. I wish this pace could be kept a secret because its one of a kind in manhattan!!

It's nice to have a place like this in the neighborhood, but my experience did not leave me with that warm, fuzzy "neighborhood coffee shop" feeling. It's cute inside and outside, but the latte I had was poorly made and partially spilled on the saucer. Staff was a little "too cool," but I'm finding that this attitude is common in New York. The girls talking loudly nearby discussed how all their friends are "European." On the whole, it gave me uncomfortable flashbacks to my student days in Paris. Quel dommage.

Four of us went to 71 in late December of 2005 and really liked it. The interior was charming and very much a "real" coffeehouse (and they don't mind if you linger), the desserts were sinfully-delicious and the coffee was very good, the staff were exceptionally friendly & personable....three of us returned there in late June of 2007 and the staff were incredibly *rude*; especially the person who took our orders. Having had such a positive experience the previous time, two of us decided to try it once more (in late December of 2007). Although the staff wasn't *as* rude as what we'd encountered the second time, they were still very unfriendly. Despite the charm of the interior and the convenience to Union Square, we won't return - and judging from many of the other reviews, our one positive experience was actually an exception at 71.

Pros: Charming, Tasty items

Cons: Very rude service

For all those who hate Starbucks...this is your place...What a real coffee spot should be...the coffee is great....service is quick...the only tough thing is waiting in line, because you have to stand next to their muffin and cake windows (they are so smart)...my wife loves to go there and read or write.

I love 71 I go there every night of the week I can't live without my cup of 71 house coffee. The store has a great atmosphere amd amazing staff who are always there to help if its a cup of coffee or a nice chat. There are a few amazing staff members who make coming in a great time. There is one guy who works nights and a few days here and there who is so fun to talk to and always has something funny to say. I think his name is Mike or something. So to those who hate 71 we would all rather you go to Starbucks and drink your freakinchinos!!!

I agree with many other critics, the staff act as if they are going to be nominated as the next Super Model. The food and atmosphere isn't too bad. Most of the patrons are rather friendly, as for the noise level, slightly loud for such a cozy place.

The service can be snooty even when you go out of your way to be polite. They messed up a Mochaccino!! (I don't know how?) I went ALL the way back from my office to exchange it and it still tasted like garbage. Last time I got one it tasted fine though? I should have gone to Starbucks. I would have spent the SAME amount, gotten a better cup of coffee and minus the 'tude. If you do go, make sure to go to the medium height guy with the black framed glasses. He is very professional.

Since the most recent review of this place was several months ago, I thought I'd weigh in. Whoever was unfriendly to other reviewers must not work there anymore, because my experience was very positive (and to those of you who thought they were rude - I've worked in coffee places before...maybe they were just being rude in response!) The place is adorable, the food and coffee delicious, and they don't mind if you hang out with a friend or a laptop for several hours. A refreshing alternative in the midst of so many faceless corporate coffee places.

The coffee is ok but pricey. The desserts are just as good as all the coffee shops around town but they charge more than anyone. The service is very rude. It's like they're doing you a favor making you a dahm cup of coffee. I highly doubt i'll ever return. I don't see why people make such a fuss about this place. I'll stick with that place Sunburst a block away from them on 18th st and 3rd ave.

I came here b/c someone gave a trashy review to my favorite coffee place (Grey Dog's) and compared it to this place so I had to see for myself what was so great about 71. I think I understand: GD is like a tie-dye shirt (comfy, colorful, bohemian) while 71 is like a starched white shirt (elegant, preppy, somewhat uptight). Don't get me wrong, it's a VERY nice place with a great selection of desserts, coffees and delicious waffles to name a few things, but there is something about it that turned me off a bit (probably the service which ranged from barely friendly to totally stuck up). Overall, it is a nice place and if you don't mind possible attitude and the not-so-cheap prices, it is a great place to meet for coffee or drinks (they have a nice selection of that too!)

This place rules! But please dont tell anyone. I have noticed this place gets more crowded, so its hard to get a table. Must be the cutest coffee shop in Manhattan. Great place to take a date after dinner. The sweets are ok, but its all abou the ambience. Again, keep this on the down low.. no need to spoil a perfect place!

The drinks are just as expensive as the chain coffee houses. The tables weren't bussed and they forgot to make my chai tea, which wasn't all that delicious, not was my friend's coffee. It was very crowded and noisy. Overall, I would rather go to a chain coffee house up the street for the same priced coffee, but a much more relaxing atmosphere, and no one forgetting my order.

If you're looking for a nice relaxed place to read the paper, meet up with a friend, do work on your laptop while getting a dose of caffeine, this is the place. The service is great, people are nice, and it's very comfortable. Can get crowded on the weekends, but if you can snag a table, you can stay all day. Their baked goods are tasty and health-conscious, albeit a bit pricey.

The redolent smell of coffee wafting in the walls of this charming shop establishes an environment rich with a sense of comfort and ease. The coffee by the name of the place is delicious and although the space is a bit tight, it's a great place to chat, chill or simply enjoy a great cup of joe.

It's a lovely place. Charming and just perfect for anything you want to do in a little cafe. I am from Europe, and the European style cafes were about the only thing that I really missed in New York. Thanks to 71 Irving I do not have to be cafe-homesick anymore. There should be more places like this in NY.

71 Irving IS New York's Best. While the food (coffee shop fare extraordinaire), ambience (this + pastries make newcomers beg for tables here), service (the baristas see me at the door and by the time I arrive at the cash register my oder is waiting for me. I call this good service. What do you think?), and value (easy...it matches the quality) are 10s, what draws the crowds from before the sun is up to long past dark is THE COFFEE! Roasted on owners' farm in NY state, the aroma alone pulls crowds through the door.

My vote goes to 71 Irving for THE greatest cup of coffee around. Whether you like your coffee strong, mild, or decaffeinated this place has the best of all. Most often we venture here at night for their top of the charts decaffeinated coffee Costa Rican Decaf and Estate Blend Decaf. Everyone I bring to this place say it's THE best DECAF they have ever had. ALL coffees are the tops along with their Balthazar tarts and creative Ice Cream sundaes. Great Staff, great beans.

'71' is my first destination when I get into Manhattan. Unfortunately, I live 90 miles north of the city so I can't get there everyday. Fortunately, I can order their coffee, have it shipped and enjoy it all the time.

Absolutely the best coffee around! Huge selection of farm roasted coffee served with a smile, absolutely no attitude, and accompanied with the best pastries in Manhattan...Balthazars, Taylors Ceci Cela... and many more. In the most beautiful ground floor brownstone setting. A daily stop for most FlatIron/Gramercy residents. Thousands flock this place at all times of the day. Find out for yourself...71 Irving has THE best cup in town. An addicted patron. Anonymous

Pros: Great ambience, Nice people

Cons: Spotty Service

I use frequent a few places around the city and no other place compares with 71 Irvin. After only attending this place a few times over a couple of weeks, the morning staff (Mario, Meg, and the two cute boys Rony and Tobias) addresses me by name and have my coffee ready to go by the time I've walked to the register. It is the only place I know that has dependable service with character. It is also a great place to people watch. They have a lot of beautiful clientele, gay and straight, plus you'll spot random famous actors on occasion.
