This was my first time at Bar Baresco. I was looking for a nice wine bar in Chelsea to go to on a Friday night with my boyfriend and that's just what we found. The ambience at Bar Baresco was intimate and the staff (John our waiter) was knowledgeable and very friendly. I was actually surprised how good the food was and my boyfriend loved the risotto. We can't wait to go back and would definitely recommend it to all of our friends looking for a great place for great wine and good food with friends.

We have been regulars at this wonderful restaurant and as a gay couple find it sad to see the slanderous comments against the place. The staff has always been friendly and helpful to us and our friends, the food delicious and affordable with a large gay clientele and everyone we send (gay or straight) loves it there. The manager and some of the staff are also gay and to read some of the comments here about gay discrimination seem to us to be an ineffective and dishonest way to resolve a dispute. Stop the hate and embrace hope, communication and understanding.

The comment below was written by the owner of the restaurant. ?privious review is rediculous?!?!? huh!?! What kind of English is that? I can hear the thick Italian accent while even reading it lol. It is true that this restaurant is homophobic, it?s sad to admit it. The manager is gay that is true but the owner isn?t and he is the one that has issues with his sexuality because he does look very gay but looks like he tries to mask his real sexuality by attacking gay guys. I have witnessed many homophobic events in this restaurant and I do not find hard to believe the comment below. Once I was kicked out because I was wearing a tank top in summertime. I pointed out that a girl was wearing a tank top too but the owner told me that she was a girl. Many of my friends refuse to go to this place and I would not suggest it to anyone. In fact I am not dining there anymore either. If you are gay and reading this you should also support our community and stop going to this homophobic place until they close it down. The owner?s name is Angel Nasty but I am not sure if it is his real name because it sounds made up. However, the last name suits him flawlessly!

Pros: The Italian food

Cons: The management.

I just want to say how absurd the previous post is. I was eating at a table across from the bar during this incident. The staff and management were both polite and discreet while asking the two men at the bar to "slow things down" while at the restaurant. I felt this was pretty appropriate considering one of the men had their hand down the other guys pants for a solid ten minutes. It wasn't making my boyfriend or i uncomfortable but it was certainly attracting our attention. After the bartendress made her request one of the guys made a scene yelling at the manager and trying to make it into an anti-homosexual thing, which is pretty ridiculous since the manager is blatantly gay. The guy even went as far as disturbing another family eating in the restaurant, cutting in right after the little girls birthday song and making sarcastic appologies to the family. way to ruin a birthday! thats when the owner came and cut in asking them to leave.

My boyfriend and i have been to bar baresco many times and there is a large gay following. As i already said the manger himself is gay as are several of the employees, This place is far from homophobic, even the straight bartender who is sometimes there is comfortable and a lil' flirtatious. Robocub defiantly just has a bruised ego and needs to get over it.

This place has an amazing wine list with hundreds of wines organized by regions of Italy, a knowledgeable staff that have told me many great stories about the wines (ask about the cappo di stato) and explained the ways the wines are made, like rippasso vs. amarone . and offers a great affordable variety of food, from a great deal on a cheese plate to the best panini i've ever had, to an Angus beef fillet for two. This is one of my favorite spots in Chelsea, and i'd hate to see it get a bad rep because of someones ego.

My boyfriend and I were having a bite with some friends having a good time for a couple of hours. We were laughing - holding hands, hugging, kissing...NO TOUNGE, nothing in appropriate. AFTER I pay the bill for 7 people the waitress comes over and says. I'm sorry but the manager asked me to tell you that this is a family estab. I then asked to speak to the manager and he tells me - There are children present and that a straight family made a comment. I then turned around - walked over to the ONLY table in the empty place with kids and said. Please accept my apologies I was told that my boyfriend and I have offended you. Allow me to please pay for your meal and handed my credit card to the waiter. The family looked at me like I was crazy and said that they had no idea what I was talking about.
The OWNER then walks over and says... PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB MY PAYING CUSTOMERS AND LEAVE!!! To which I replied... I JUST PAYED A BILL FOR 7 PEOPLE...I am a paying customer. The mother then told the owner how dare he treat me this way and that he should refund my money. Then the father got up and started arguing with the owner. My boyfriend grabbed my arm and said... Please... lets leave. I walked out and sent a text to hundreds of people and facebooked. In my life I was NEVER treated this way ever! AND IN CHELSEA of all places!

Cons: very homophobic restaurant owner, treats paying customers like sh*t. Scapegoats other customers.

This restaurant pretends to be something that it is not. Besides, they do not like gay people, so be prepared for rude service if you happen to be gay. Overall, a pathetic experience.

I live in the neighborhood - in fact in seeing distance of Bar Baresco. I love a good night out so the soft light and pleasant ambience has called my attention more than once. Frankly, 2 out of 3 times I have been there have been so dissapointing, it is embarassing to admit I spent money there at all. The food is basic Italian, which is to say "decent". The service has been horrible - being ignored after seating, ignored after ordering and ignored after having requested the check. Complaining to the manager did NOTHING - clearly not service oriented. After three tries, I will never go back and will stick to Le Zie, a great northern Italian option well established in Chelsea, only a few blocks down 7th.

In the space that used to be occupied by Sette, Bar Baresco is low-key, reasonably priced, and a nice place for groups.
My friend and I had a pleasant, romantic meal here that I enjoyed very much. I have to say that the food is basic Italian fare, prepared nicely but not exciting.

But there are three attractions: the atmosphere, the prices and the wine list. Sitting both inside and out, this is a lovely restaurant in an interesting part of town (we both faced outside so we could watch the various characters walking by). Also Bar Baresco is less crowded and noisy than their sister restaurant next store, Il Bastardo. The prices are modest, quite a bit less than Il Bastardo, mainly because the emphasis is on wine (that according to the host). Which brings us to the main attraction: the wine. They have a great selection of Italian wines, including more than 40 by the glass. We each selected two different wines and enjoyed sipping each others. It was fun trying four different good wines over the course of our meal.

The charchuterie and cheese plate as a starter was very good. Lobster risotto entree was fresh and yummy. Loved the decor. We went on a Sunday so it wasn't crowded at all. Wine selections range from regional varietals to selected vintages, with a focus on the true representation of each italian geographic region,.Our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive .Nice wine suggestion ,barolo. At the end the great host came over and gave my party glasses of complimentary proseco. It was a great experiance overall and I will defininitely be back.

For a first timer it was a great experience, I met my friends for dinner
one of them suggested the restaurant. Our waiter was good and really helpful
this made me decide on my dish( I?m really picky deciding on what I eat), no expensive
but very good for the price.
if you ask about the wine you?ll be surprise with the different types of wine they carry,
if you have any question they will answer anything you can come with about wines.
All I can say is that we had a great food ,excellent wine and service . Definitively we?ll be back.

Horrible experience! I was going to el bastardo few weeks ago but they did not have a table available outside so the hostess from barbesco grabbed me and told me to eat at this place. I felt almost forced to eat there but I did give it a try. The place is ok, small but ok and the food was ok, although the menu haS almost no food to choose from, but I get it it's a "wine bar".
The prices are average but the portions are small so it only looks like you are saving money. Anyways, food aside, the thing that bothered me the most was a man continuously staring at my partner the entire dinner. He was also talking with the hostess making sexual remarks about my partner. At first I thought: "ah poor fella, he has probably never seen a hot guy before." but when I found out that that man was the manager of the restaurant I felt really disgusted and offended. How can a manager be so unprofessional, that is my question. I did not enjoy the food and my partner did not either and we actually left in a hurry because he was trying to talk to us. He was staring at us also when we left and he was making dirty remarks in spanish with one of the servers. Now my spanish is not great but it was easy to understand what he was saying, PERV! We will not go to this restaurant again!!!
