Never again! My husband and I were walking around the West Village during a gorgeous summer afternoon. We saw the charming outdoor tables, and asked whether we could just order a bottle of wine and sit and enjoy. The waiter asked what kind of wine we wanted, so we asked for a wine list, to which he replied, " Red? White?" I said we would be interested in either a white or rose. Again, instead of getting a wine list, he went on describing what types of whites. We asked what type of rose, and he said "French". I asked how much the bottle was, and he then replied, "$35 or $40?" He wasn't sure. Upon bringing the bottle and serving us, he then said he had to bring it inside, as they didn't have ice buckets. Fair enough, except when we were near finishing the bottle, my husband asked if they would just leave the bottle on the table. One waiter did, but the first waiter came back and took the bottle off our table, and said it was against "management policy" to leave the bottle out. My husband was fuming. When this waiter came back out, he tried to explain himself, and I said, what difference did it make, since we're almost done with the bottle, and if we let it get warm, it was our business, not "management's". He proceeded to bring it back out, and we asked for the bill. The other waiter came out and told is it was $50.60. I said how much was the bottle? He said it was $46 + tax. How did we go from $35~ $40 not too sure, to $46? Then to top it all off, it was cash or American Express only. Thankfully we had enough cash, but I asked for the receipt. The rude waiter came back out after ringing it up, and flicked it onto our table, and of course it fell on the ground. Of course we will never go back, but "management" had better pay better attention to the very rude service, and what seems to us, as a scam by not letting the customer see prices before they order. Beware!

This is my absolute favorite West Village restaurant. Sitting outside on a warm night, drinking a French Gimlet or one of the very good wines by the glass, with a light late supper of calamari (omigod the ethereal perfectly cooked, delightful lush, generously portioned calamari!) and salad - perfection.

Everyone I have brought here has come back - frequently. We all agree that Alexandra is a place to call culinary home. Every dish I have savored has been absolutely wonderful, from the perfectly dressed salads to the luscious desserts.

And the staff is as cool as downtown can be while being friendly and more than willing to serve!

I just wish they had the corn soup every night! (Fortunately they seem to always have the ribs, calamari and mussels!)

Had brunch here today and was extremely disappointed by the food. Huevos Rancheros had no flavor and the world's worst guacamole. Chicken sandwich took 50 minutes to arrive and was still slightly raw inside when it finally arrived.

There are several decent reviews on here, so I can only imagine it's recently changed management or chefs. That's the only thing that an explain the cockroaches that scampered as I walked to the bathroom.

Ick!

I was walking past this restaurant at lunchtime ,hungry and cold and stopped in for a casual lunch. Being by myself, I sat at the bar and asked the server what she recommended. She broughtt me a delicious creamy roasted vegetables soup and a grilled calamari appetizer that was incredible. I had a wonderful desert also recommended. This is a small special West Village vibe place. As I ate at the bar local merchants were popping in to say hello to the woman behind the bar who I learned was the owner. No wonder her recommendations were spot on. I'll be back to try dinner.

We have all heard of the restaurant Alexandra. People rave and brag about the food. Let me tell you, the food was not up to my expectations for this restaurant. I ordered a steak entree, and did not feel well the next day. I asked for the steak medium rare, but was served with it simply red. I decided to eat it nonetheless.

The service was however really good. However, the main thing that should be concentrated on here is the FOOD!

What really makes this restaurant is the atmosphere, decor and the amazing service. It truly is a very classy restaurant and very inviting. The food is pretty good, too.Their oyster could use a little improvement but the salmon I had there was excellent and it was on top of the corn and tomato concoction that would make anyone's mouth melt. The touchino was quite good. I'd say the low point of my visit there was the calamari.

All in all a great place if you want to hang out with a couple of friends or go on a fun date.

by far the worst service in the village! waitress doesnt care if you caught on fire she would ignore you... after waiting 40 minutes for my dinner she tried to take away my plate with half of the meal still on it, mentioning that she needed the table. THERE WAS NO ONE WAITING. won't ever go back. the food was ok, too expensive.

Expected a charming brunch but one of the waiters was beyond rude and unaccommodating. We honestly did not feel welcome. While we thought we had found another charming Village brunch hangout spot, in the end we decided we will never patronize this establishment again. Quite a shame.

Pros: location

Cons: service, wait staff

I've been here a few times and the food has always been great - the salmon is a favorite, and so are the scallops. The service can be uneven, since it seems they hire inexperienced waiters and train them on the job. Overall, it's a wonderful and cozy destination.

Pros: great food, cozy ambiance

Living locally Alexandra has become a staple in my restaurant rotation. The food is eclectic and excellent - ranging from a great paella to a tasty burger. The staff have always been helpful in my experience, and the candlelit ambience is just as cozy as could be. Some reviews have been negative - but seem to be attributed to a single bad experience. As someone who frequents the place very often; I can wholeheartedly disagree. Alexandra is excellent.

I cam here with my girlfriend and another couple and we had the best time ever! The food was great and everyone in the place was smiling and helpful. I would love to go back often. My party agreed.

I do not live in NY but visit often and always include a visit to Alexandra. I love the food! It is always flavorful and fresh. I have had everything from a great burger to a delicious fresh mahi prepared with top gourmet style. The atmosphere reminds me a a small French Bistro, with friendly but not intrusive service. I for one appreciate that they do not allow strollers or dogs. It would be unsafe for children and dogs to be in this small space with hot food and beverages being served

This is by far the worst serive I have ever encountered in the usually charming West Village. Not only was I told that they would not pour coffee over ice for me (why not?), I was reprimanded for going across the street and buying an iced coffee. I was told that, "Alexandra does not allow outside beverages." Perhaps they should, as they were out of diet coke, completely ignored our second drink order and would not do something as simple as bring me a glass of ice and cup of coffee. Not to mention that the entrees came out in two groups, about ten minutes apart (and were average, at best). The waiter must have known he was not getting a tip, because he ADDED 20% to our bill for a party of four. Needless to say, with all the charming places in the West Village, it would be a shame to waste your time here.

9/9: We live in the neighborhood, actually across the street, and used to frequent for average to pretty good food and nice wine list...but as per the owners just this past week they no longer allow strollers or dogs at the outer area for eating for brunch, lunch or dinner. The West Village is all about families and pets! My suggestion: Alexandra can move to another hood! I'll never go back!

Brunch here was a total disappointment. My boyfriend and I eat at many of the wonderful establishments in the West Village and know a lot about food and wine. We live around the corner and have passed Alexandra several times and decided to give it a shot for brunch. The sidewalk tables were full and the inside was totally empty, so we sat inside. The bartender was glaring and wore flip-flops, which are not appropriate. We ordered a medium rare burger that came out well done and had to be sent back, with no apology from our disinterested waitress. The eggs benedict was overcooked and had a grainy sauce. They actually charge $3 PER GLASS of iced tea, so two rounds for a 5-6 oz serving of iced tea came to $12, which we were fully charged for despite the problems with our meals. Worst service in the West Village, and the food is pretty bad. This place should be shut down. It's by far the most awful eating experience in the neighborhood. We will never go back.

This place should be out of business. My husband & I dine out alot, & as much as we enjoy good food, we aren't ones to complain. However, I was apalled at the rude service and the food. I ordered a mahi sandwich,
the fish arrived rubbery & not even cooked. When I told the waitor he could care less- replying- oh, well sorry- not even, can I get you another or something else. I also ordered a glass of pinot grigio, but when the bill came I was charged $14 for a pinot gris- a little outrageous. When I explained to the waitor that I ordered a pinot grigio, not a pinot gris- he again rudely replied,"we dont serve pinot grigio's", well at that point I was livid, because out of common courtesy he should have told me and the whole experience was unpleasant. Trust me, do not waste your money on this place. We're fortunate to have many great restaurants in our wonderful city, go explore others.

I went to Alexandra with a friend who lives in the neighborhood. My experience was much better than most of the reviews: food was very good (giant, delicious pork chop); attentive, if casual service; prompt delivery of food and wine; very nice wine selection (if a little pricey, but more under $40 are available than prior reviews would indicate); great dessert. All in all, I can't think of a better place to spend a cold February Wednesday night. They should have a big sign saying cash only though, because I had no idea until the bill came.

We ordered a round at the bar, a McCellan 18 on the rocks for him, and a captian and coke for me $35.00 total. We were promptly seated at the worst table in the place. The restaurant was offering a $70.00 Price Fixed Menu which included a four course menu and champagne. We, only were given 3 full courses. Coffee not included. During the night, we ordered 3 bottles of wine, (none offered under $40.00) 1 Gin and tonic, and one cappucino. Our bill came to $480.00, which included tax and a 20% Gratuity. Our waiter was pushing us all night to take our plates, and swiped my dessert before I was finised with it. The staff wanted to get the tables cleared out so they can have an after party. they should have offered two seating times for dinner. 5:00pm and 8:00pm. and offered only bar service after 10:00pm.

I recently had lunch at Alexandre. A beautiful fall day, sitting outdoors I had the Cuban Sandwich....very authentic! I'm bringing friends to dinner here this weekend. There is a sembalance of distance and disfamiliarity that is prevalent in the bistros in Manhattan, none such here. The service and food were both excellent!

I ate here for lunch and the look and feel of the place is quite nice for the west village. I ordered the steak lunch special wrap and was disappointed for it for the amount it cost. It was 16 bucks and was about as thick as a half dollar and very oily.

The presentation of the food is good but the quality and quanity for the price wasn't there.

I also ordered a cup of coffee which was luke warm at best.

There are plenty of other better places to go to in the west village.

That is EXACTLY what this lovely space, service, and food allows one to do. A true sit down, enjoy bottles of wine with your friends or loved one, drown in conversation kind of place. Do not go to rush. Why would you want to? This is Manhattan- Live and Laugh. To the others whom left reviews about the slow service, RELAX!!!!

The food at Alexandra was very good, however, the wait staff needs to be much more professional. For one, please offer the specials prior to taking our order. Also, we were only given wine by the glass options when we asked. Which, after 6 glasses added up -especially at a cash only establishment. Apparently, we now know bottles are available but we weren't given the option by our clueless waitress. The ambiance in the restaurant was nice, with one exception -that being a very loud server who talked the entire time. One of the things she discussed very loudly was how much she made in tips that night. Which made us, and the table next to us, feel uncomfortable. Again, the food was great, but we are waiting to dine again at Alexandra in hopes that the manager makes some sorely needed staff improvements.

A crowded noisy space with inattentive, hurried, service posing as a quaint West Village bistro du jour. The bartender ignored us for 10 minutes before asking what we'd like to drink although we were the only people waiting for a table when we walked in. The food was very good, but the waitress amateurish and seemed hassled by the idea that service was a part of the equation of dining in a restaurant. She forgot to bring our dessert, after sitting with coffee for 15 minutes. We cancelled and she apologized but too late. I waited 2 weeks to write this in hopes of forgiving a new neighborhood place I really wanted to enjoy, but after due consideration, wouldn't ever go back. Sorry!

bummer
what used to be one of our favorite neighborhood spots is going downhill FAST.
the problem started out as the service...but now the food is lacking too.
took my mother there yesterday for mother's day brunch - bad idea. the food was cold, slow, my request for "dry toast" was interpreted as "buttered" and when i pointed it out and asked for dry toast found myself waiting 10-15 minutes for it - by then my cold scrambled eggs were long gone. how long does it take to make toast?

(and the waitress is just creepy - no smiles, odd body language, ew)

below is my original review; boy how things change.

alexandra is a fabulous addition to the neighborhood - a cozy, friendly spot to enjoy some yummy comfort food...nice soft candle light and a pleasant buzz in the room. we've dined there twice now and both times the owner welcomed us, helped us with our coats and then as we left followed us to the door to thank us for coming...now THATS service! we'll be back again and again.

A charming, small restaurant - very casual. Went for brunch where there is a wait if you come at 1. The kitchen is then reeling from that and it took us 40 minutes to get our brunch entree. The food was delicious and the service lovely. I will definitely try dinner, but they do need to fix the kitchen shifts so that people get served in a reasonable time.

I have never written in before but I had to warn you about this place. I already wrote this once but the 300 words of bad stuff that I had to write about this place was too many (you can only use 150 words here), so here it is in a nutshell. We had a 9:15 reservation. We weren't seated until 9:45. At 11:00 we still did not have our main course. After we purchased our first bottle of wine, we ordered a second one - they ran out of every wine under $40. Everyone was rude, no one apologized and when we asked to speak with the owner and calmly explained the problem, he asked us to leave - yelling at us!!!! I have never experienced anything like this and I have eaten at the nicest and most casual places in the city. This was just ridiculous.

Cons: Rude, Terrible Service, Long Wait

This restaurant is small and intimate...The menu is great and the specials change daily - I had a great miso glazed halibut with avocado

I've been twice and between friends have tried close to everything on the menu. All of us agreed that it was some of the best food we've had in a long time. The service was friendly and informative. Great drink menu from well made mojitos to fabulously chosen wines. The best part is that is that the food comes first- NOT having a trendy, hip joint. I was told that the menu items (especially fish) will change according to what is the most freshly available at given times. Our favorites: amazing caesar salad - the mussles in red curry are divine - the salmon w/ asparagus and polenta was beautifuly presented and melted in my mouth! Overall, this will be a west village favorite for years to come.

This is a our newest and most welcome neighbor. We stopped in during the first big snow storm this winter. Everyone agreed that the food was excellent and the service quick and helpful. Been there twice since and the salmon was amazing (citric flavored asparagus rocks), chicken is best in the area, special boullibase was greatr and the starters have all been wonderful.

I highly recommend Alexandra for a cozy, neighborhood outing; it's not a fancy night out. Has a small bar too for those quick drinks or lingering bar dinners. Go soon before it's mobbed.

Note: That banging you might here, is the pipes. Landlord is a bit of a dip it seems. Adds to the charm, but if loud noises annoy you, sit on the left side or away from the front right window. Also, there was no sign on the bathroom door.
