Ok, it was a 7:30 reservation for 9 people, a little tough to accommodate perfectly, but they should've had our table ready. No big deal wait, about 10 minutes, but I had specifically asked that they have the table ready because I was bringing a 90 and 93 year old. Ok, the pizza better be worth the wait...and so it was! The pizza is really the best we Italophile have had in NY...much better than SD 26. The pappardelle with mushrooms was dreamy and the artichoke appetizer quite yummy. The service was good, food came promptly, but we had to ask them 4 times to turn down the music, which was so incredibly loud that the table of 7 ladies across from us had to scream at each other to speak, thus making the room deafening. Once the music was lowered, things were more tolerable. Next time we go, I think we'll bring a smaller group and sit at a booth in the front. And the food is so good, that there will be a next time!

I don't know why some people got poor service here but when I was here, it was fine. We got our order and food relatively fast.

Between my boyfriend and I, we ordered a large spicy salami with cheese pizza and the fried calamari as an appetizer. The pizza is crusty and chewy and the salami was flavorful. I just wish there was more salami!

We didn't finish the pizza as the fried calamari came in such a big portion. The price here is pretty reasonable and we had a good time here.

Pros: Delicious pizzas

Just had the ricotta pizza and salad at Luzzo's two nights ago and they were both out of this world! The service was prompt and friendly; so, I guess they've heeded previous complaints made on this website. I would highly recommend, if you're looking for real authentic pizza similar to in Italy.

We saw a TV program about this restaurant and traveled to the East Village to seek it out. The service was excellent... very attentive. The waiter even offered to let us sample arugula as we were not sure we would like it.
The much-touted pizza was a huge disappointment. It was floppy, had very little sauce and the crust was not even near crispy. In fact, the bottom had black residue from the oven which made it taste burnt. We asked for a light amount of arugula on half the pizza. It came covered with arugula. We looked for the Margarita pizza on the menu only to find out later the name had been changed to Bufala pizza because of the cheese they now use on it. Sad to say the trip was not worth the pizza.
The eggplant appetizer, on the other hand, was to die for. We'll try this place again but we won't be ordering pizza.

The buzz is true!!! The food was AMAZING, if you know authentic Italian cooking it's ALL that & more to rave about...Let me tell you a little about my experience...We started with appetizers...
The Bruschetta~it was SOOO good, the flavors were perfect & the tomato's were so fresh!!
We also had the Curcio Gratinati--baked artichokes, they were the 1st to go, could of had another round of those!!
Then we had the Prosciutto E Mozzarella, this dish was so amazing!! You could tell it the difference in taste with other restaurants because the freshness was impeccable!!
Then we had a Campana Pizza. The flavor was so amazing because of the mozzarella & the sauce with just the right amount of basil & parmigiano. The coal oven way it's made blows away the regular oven made at other pizzerias. The crust was perfect!! Again, if you know good food, you can tell the difference...
Then we had our main dishes. Rigatoni Alla Norma--Rigatoni with Eggplant & Ricotta cheese, the pasta was cooked just the right amount~the only thing my friend added to that was an extra plate of Ricotta on top of what she received with her meal because she loves A LOT of Ricotta with her meal!!
I had the Lasagna Di Carne, which is my favorite dish & it's the 1st thing I try everywhere i go. Needless to say, the flavors of the sauce & the meat were the best I've probably ever had!!! The meat was seasoned so well, the pasta was so fresh & the flavors between all of them together were really were Devinne!! It wasn't served with ricotta cheese, as it's an authentic Italian restaurant, but it didn't even need it!! altho my friend used her extra ricotta that she ordered & had it with her part, since she can never get enough of ricotta cheese & even the ricotta was yummy!!
There was hardly room for dessert, as we tried to taste & share as much as we could, but we went for it anyway & had some gelato. It was so creamy! Then we ordered zeppoles with nutella inside~it was so good we ordered another round to go!!! Let me say I've NEVER had that combo of the zeppole with the nutella~what a treat!! It came out nice & hot with sugar on top. It wasn't heavy, as zeppoles usually are, they were light & had a nice crispness to them~ AMAZING!!
Props to the chef & the staff for giving us a GREAT dining experience & we WILL be back!!!!
As far as the service, we had 2 waiters attending to us all night, as we were there a long time, taking our time & enjoying the atmosphere. We must of been there 3 hours & weren't rushed out in the least!!!
This restaurant is AMAZING & Long Island was over due for a restaurant that could offer this kind of Italian cuisine.. I had no complaints or would of changed anything. I'm going back next week to try more yummy meals!!! Enjoy everyone, it's a treat!! :0)

Pros: Authentic Italian Food

.

ordered two pies a week ago for take out, one a vegetarian (the arugula) for my girlfriend. We get back to our apartment to find they've given us the vegetarian with prosciutto. Normally not a big problem, we'll call them up, tell them they gave us the wrong pizza, go back and exchange it. Instead, we call them up, the hostess insists, actually yells, that they did not make a mistake (their online menu was different than their house menu), and I have to go back there to show them their error on my phone; they did not believe me until I showed them this! Only then did I get the right pizza, an hour and a half after we had ordered. I'm not one to insist that the customer is always right, but when there is clearly a mistake on their part it is just appalling to be yelled at over the phone. unbelievable! What's more, a week later they still haven't updated their online menu!

Cons: terrible service

This is by far my favorite authentic Italian Pizza place in NYC. My friends and I love this place. The calamari is tender and never over cooked. The pastas are to die for. The owner/staff are the most friendly around. Highly recommended. You can go wrong here folks. Plan to wait for a table on the weekends though...well worth it.

I am an Italian guy from Naples, grew up between the best pizzerias in the world, and when I travel the world I always miss the taste of home. I found it now in the East Village, , there is a place called Luzzo's.
The best Pizza in NYC, not American Pizza, but Napolitan Pizza ( a huge difference)
Give it a try and you wuill never Stop.
Delicious Bufala mozzarella and a crispy thin crust , baked in a old coal oven are what make this the number 1 Place for Napolitan Pizza.

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

.

the pizza is okay...but the service is not good at all..because one day that i was there one of the waiters pulled down his pants in front of every1 and i was so disgusted that my wife wanted to leave immediately so i do not reccomend to go eat pizza at this place olny for take out is good..and also its very pricey and besides the pizza the food is disgusting...and dont get me started about the bread they gave me 2 slices and one of the waiters spilled water all over my wife's purse and we didnt find out till we left! so luzzos is not one of the best places to go eat!

I walked into Luzzos in the east village and ended up in Naples, Italy. If you are looking for a real Italian pizza instead of a New York pizza then Luzzos is the spot to go in New York City. This hot coal oven cooked Neapolitan style pizza with imported buffalo mozzarella from Italy tastes so good. I sometimes feel like back traveling in Italy and stopping for a little slice of heaven. If anyone going with you is not a fan of pizza I say with a doubt the gnocchi is a good choice for a pasta dish.

I am a very fussy eater and I have to say that Luzzo's pizza is terrific --- crisp, thin crust and just enough cheese. I much prefer it to Lombardi's. I also have tried their yummy homemade pasta dishes with bolognese sauce . Only once the pasta was slightly underdone for my taste. The service is excellent as well - speedy and attentive.

I know a lot of restaurants claim to have the best pizza in NYC, but I think Luzzo's is the real one. I've tried describing to my friends exactly what makes Luzzo's so good, but I've been unable to come up with an justifiable description. If you're a pizza person, just give this a try. Pizza is sold only by the pie (not slice) so you'll have to have some friends to share with, but it's definitely worth it.

Pros: Awesome pizzas

When my husband and I go to Manhattanwe hit Luzzo's. The best great Italian pizza. Luzzo's serves neapolitan style pizza with mozzarella di buffalo that they import from Italy. Not sure what other pizza place in New York that has the same. Neapolitan dishes but once you see the coal-fired oven at the far wall. Coal-burning ovens are used to get even ckked crust. The tomato sauce tasted home-made and sweet. We will be heading back to Luzzo's next time in New York.

To be fair, I ordered a pizza that was loaded with meat - but boy was the crust spongy and my stomach felt knotted after eating. It reminded me of a frozen pizza.

Now, I have friends who swear by this place, but I thought it kinda stunk and so did my girlfriend... I await the pounding from "real" italians blah blah blah. Everyone has an opinion, and IMHO this is not one of the better places in NY. In fact I would rank Luzzo's under Totonno's, Grimaldi, Patsy, Johns et al.

I really didn't expect much from this place, but the pizza was very good - great, even. Leaps and bounds better than Lombardi's or Grimaldi's. The space is cramped and oddly decorated, but that doesn't matter much when you're eating pizza. The service is great, and the entire staff is friendly.

First, I say I like the pizza. No one on here is overhyping it-- it's good. But... there's one waiter who has waited on me at least five times that makes me feel like I am buying a used car. It doesn't matter how many people I dine with, he's always trying to "upsell" me to buy a large pizza or an extra pizza. Bottom line is the pizza is good, but after the most recent visit I think takeout is the safest way to go.

New York City is a big "Pizza Market", where there is too much competition and not too much tast about this kind of products. I been around, i grow up in Italy, and, i heared about Luzzo too many times. Finally i went there, and........Don't even use the words: Best Coal Oven, or Best Pizza. You guys are too far away from "a vera pizza a' legna".

There are many options in the East Village to eat but I went to Luzzo's after a friend recommended it. I went during lunch as I was in need of a great meal from a long night. The minute you walk in it almost feels like you are walking into a restaurant in Italy. The coal overns in the back really add to the mood and make the food even better. We started off with the buffalo mozzerella pizza and upon eating the 1st slice, I had never tased anything so delicious, so light, and so full of natural flavor. I was lucky enough to meet the owners and compliment them. I learned all the ingredients were imported which explains why the taste was so immaculate. The home made gnochhi was a must try as well!

Pros: Pizza, Italian Food, Ambiance, Service

My friend and I were looking for "a very good slice" today and came across Luzzo's. We saw the reviews in the window and, being pizza aficianados, had to give it a try. Our meal started out well -- friendly and quick service, charming atmosphere, and a nice eggplant parm appetizer. We ordered a large pizza after our server suggested "large" for the two of us. Well, when the pie came, we knew we'd been bamboozled -- a small would have been perfect for us! It was a lot of pizza. The pie itself? Not that great. Like some other reviewers have noted, our pizza was limp, not crispy, and lukewarm. I did not like the cheese scattered in dollops (rather than shredded on the whole pie) and the basil leaves were sparse. And overall there was no real "pizza flavor." I've had pizza in Italy, and all over the U.S., and this just doesn't rate. Sorry! Give me a good slice from a Brooklyn "dive" pizza shop any day!

If you want to taste actual pizza, come here. If you don't then get out of here. Hands down the best pizza of my life and waitresses ain't too bad either. They're good looking too! There is a reason REAL Italians like this place. Perfectly executed think crust, fresh cheeses (and not too much of it) and the best sauce you'll ever taste. Heard these people moved to NY from Napoli. So if your favorite kind of pizza is real pizza, here you go. Don't make me repeat myself! REAL PIZZA.

Cons: If you don't like good pizza or pretty girls and you have a problem with Italians then stay away.

I went to this place after reading the rave reviews on here and was really disappointed. I ordered a neopolitan pizza and an artichoke dish. The pizza was so soft I could barely pick it up-and the toppings were meager. The artichoke dish which cost $9.50 consisted of 4 tiny pieces of artichokes which tasted like they came out of a can. Also, my server, without asking me what size I wanted, gave me a large, pricier pizza (trust me, me and my friend did not look like we needed a large) which cost $22. I have found better pizza for $2 a slice.

Hands down this is the most authentic pizza in the world including Italy, here it's all about the pizza, burnt to the right amount, bubbly and crusty to the right amount, soft and crunchy, tangy tomato sauce and the mozzarella even melted you can tell it was the freshest.Try and fold it when it come out ...it wil stay up and hold the toppings. The flavor are really authentic and delicious.Everythingelse .....live it to posterity for ratings, If you want to be really cool and be like a true neapolitan go there order a pizza with your favorite toppings and a bottle of Gragnano, you'll see ,you can still be a king spending less then $ 40.Enjoy

Pros: PIZZA,PIZZA,PIZZA, PIZZA did i mention PIZZA

Cons: o come on

THe pizza here is just so good. It is thin crust, but it is not very crispy. And I'd probably think this doesn't sound so good if I hadn't gone, but believe me, it's perfect. Everything is fresh and flavorful. THe staff is friendly and attentive. It gets a little loud and crowded, but that's due to the great food! The (one) bathroom didn't have any running water (?) when I was there and was closed, so that was annoying. I'd also like it if they had a full bar (wine and beer only), but I'd still go back in a second. Delicious.

Cons: ....too many people now know Luzzo's!!!!

I am completely in love with this place. I would sincerely eat the plain pie with buffala mozerella every single day if I could. I go to a lot of "really great" restaurants and eat a variety of food, but to date, nothing has ever once toped any of my multiple experiences at this pizza place. Nothing has ever moved me to write a review! Everything is authentic down to the employees and customers!
I can't express to you enough how much I love this place!

Pros: Best Pizza You Will Ever Have

Cons: The decor is a little funny- but not hideous

I am Italian, and now live in New York. I went to Luzzo yesterday for the first time, and since I am a pizza lover, the thing I missed most from Italy was a good italian pizza. And Luzzo is the one that can do it. I was impressed also because the pizzeria was full of Italians that live now in New York! My pizza con salsiccia e bufala was amasing, excellent ingredients and proportions, that for Italian is very important. If you are looking for an american pizza full of so so ingredients don't go there.
I can't wait to go back... IT IS SOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!

I've been there recently for the first time: I'm Italian and I miss Pizza a lot.
Some Italian friends living here recommended to me and surely it was worthy going there.
Friendly and informal place, good for Sunday night pizza (truly Italian tradition).

PS
Don't tell too many people.

Yes, it's true: it's not the place for a romantic dinner and it could happen you've to wait for a while to be seated and served. But, if you want to experience one of the best Italian pizza - better than many of the pizzas in Rome or in Milan - you must definitely go there. Michele makes a pizza that is light and delicious, a pleasure to enjoy very slowly. And also the food from the kitchen - try the fried calamari! - is excellent. Suggestions: go in small parties, avoid Saturday night, and you'll live a superb PIZZA-EXPERIENCE!!

My girlfriend and I were invited out with friends to dine at Luzzo's. Now I love pizza more than life itself. I had heard nothing but good things about Luzzo's and was anxious to try them out. I was very disappointed. Now to be fair, I was not in the greatest of moods that evening and had hoped that Luzzo's would lift my spirits. This was not to be.
First of all we had a larger group of 12 people. Now having worked in the restaurant industry, one learns tricks of the trade, i.e. have the table prepared with filled water glasses, settings down, etc. When we were seated, our waiter only really greeted the far side of the table acknowledging 4/5 people and brought over drinks to them before we had even been brought water by the busboy. The party's host had ordered a couple of bottles of wine and others ordered beer, but our waiter never even came to the other side of the table to ask if we wanted drinks. I could overlook this if it were not for the rest of the experience.
He finally came around the table to receive our order and my girlfriend and I decided we would split a large pie, as did another couple next to us. When the food arrived he had two small pies. To this we explained that we had ordered large pies, my girl leading the way. He said and I quote "no, no please don't make trouble for me" when we asked him to correct the order and "I am sorry; the place is busy" and "I give you a free small" (which never happened). While he was telling us he WAS NOT going to correct HIS mistake he had his hands all over my girlfriend in a touchy-feely way that made her extremely uncomfortable. She pressed him harder about the order as she became more angry and finally he gave us a free dessert. And all of this for only $32 dollars per person!
As for the pizza, honestly it was average. I thought it was a bit soggy and the cheese was very oily for fresh mozzarella. 'Lil Frankie's on a good day and Lombardi's on ANY day beats this place hand's down.

Pros: sorry, didn't have any!

Cons: price, service

Maybe tonight was an off night for Luzzo's--unless the other reviews were all written by friends and relatives--but this was the worst pie I've ever had in this price range. Though you would expect a crust from a coal oven to be crispy and chewy, somehow they managed to make theirs soggy and limp. Maybe it was the watery sauce. And maybe the oven wasn't hot enough (the pizza was served lukewarm). To add to the fiasco, there were only two basil leaves, and a miserly topping of anchovies.

This is absolutely the best pizza I have ever eaten in my whole life though I am Italian and I ate pizza almost everywhere in Italy and not only. The Chef (Michele Luzzo) makes everynight a dream comes true with his hands.
A thing also really important about this pizza that it does not make you feel heavy. Do you know why? Because they use good products (buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomato etc...) and the Chief know how to cook and manage the dough. There is something in the dough that make me feel really good.
I absolutely believe this is the best in all NYC!!!!!!
Price is not high at all
The atmosphere is really friendly
The only thing that I do not like about this place that is too faraway where I live and I cannot eat it when I want.

Seriously, it is the best pizza in the World, if you love pizza you cannot go in other restaurants!
Italians come here from Italy to live this experience.
The place is warm and the owner, his wife and the chef will treat you as one of the family.
Everything you order from the kitchen is outstanding. True italian pasta, eggplant parmigiana and delicious "risotto"!
I recommend to all of you who are looking for a very good experience!

Luzzo's pie is slowly becoming known as one of the best in the city. It is a cross between neoploitan and new york pizza. The NY style comes from the coal oven that gives it a smokey crispy flavor. The pasta is also fantastic. After reading some of these reviews it really sounds like someone has an axe to grind for them because I have never had bad service or slow delivery. I will say that it is very pricey, but to be honest, it is worth it the pizza is that good.

A while back I enjoyed a good meal there with bad service. Since then, TERRIBLE. Their delivery takes hours, their menu is a mess. I went there for lunch and there was ONE other table there with 3 people, after 10 min they came over, gave me a menu and I asked where their paninis were and they said "We only serve that on our take-out menu" meanwhile behind me there was one sitting on a PLATE! I got up and left and will NEVER return. NEVER.

I originally wrote a positive review of Luzzos' back in Nov. But I've been back many times since and I have to amend my prior assessment. The pizza is still delicious, the crust altogether good. But he service has become crap. The old waitstaff was friendly and eager to show off how good their little pizza joint was. Now it just seems like they're trying too hard to make it into a fancier place then it is... and failing at that. The service is lousy, the waiters forgetful, they don't listen when they take your order. The music is too loud, and the back room crowd always seem to be filled with eurotrashy looking goombah types who are friends with the owners. I don't know what happened, Luzzo's, but go back to the original formula. It worked so well.

A friend and I first saw Luzzo's chefs on the Martha Stewart show. We decided to try it out this afternoon and had a lovely time. The restaurant is small and simple, homey slightly nicer than a typical pizzeria. There was only one server on duty and we waited a while for menus. I applaud Luzzo's on authenticity - it was truly enjoyable to watch the chef / owner make the food in the back of the restaurant, ravage in the generous-portioned and very flavorful pizza (we ordered the arugula and the polette), and fill up on plenty of bread and salad. The chef even came to our table after and chatted about his hometown of Naples. The service and decor could use some help, but the pizza definitely makes this hole-in-the-wall worth trying.

WIth the glut of Italian restaurants spread throughout the East Village, Luzzo's is a welcome newcomer in recent years. Though we have never eaten in the actual restaurant, their take-out is excellent -- delicious, home cooked meals, delivered hot to your door. And cheaper than many other places in the area. Try them out on your next rainy night in.

This eatery in the Italian restaurant-laden East Village stands out for its Neapolitan authenticity. Try the crisp, yet still chewy, coal-oven pizza (the margherita is a classic but the marinara adds flavorful anchovies, oregano, garlic…
