Amazing beer selection, quality food and friendly, super knowledgeable bartenders that are willing to let you sample before you decide. Lots of space to sit and talk to friends or listen to music. Definitely check out the Belgian Room next

Took a friend up for her birthday; the music was a bit like a random jukebox selection. The shots were expensive and we will not be going back due to the atmosphere and the price.

Pros: Nice building and service

Cons: bathroom is unisex with see through door

Hop devil grill never had very good lunch/dinner. They did have a kick ass brunch and a very good beer selection. For some reason they decided to get rid of brunch. I know enough other restaurants with tons of beer, so I wont be going back.

A real dive with a waitress (that's right, just 1 for 20 tables or so). I managed 3 beers our of her in three hours.

Great Sports bar to go with friends. The food is really good, you want to have the Nachos Grande and the Quesadillas which are my favorites.

The beer selection is more than plenty, They will have more than 50 brews for you to sample from all over the world, my favorite? the Belgian room.
Prices are reasonable, and the portions of food are good to share with friends, which is great for parties. If you have a large party, call ahead and they will reserve a spot you.

the great service with smile was definitely what made this place great--they gave us a free round of kamikazes and a gift certificate in celebration of the birthday, and didn't push anyone to order food or more drinks. they even took the liberty of putting up a ton of balloons for the occasion :-P

the crowd could have been better but the quiet allowed us to actually have audible conversations despite being at a bar in st marks.

drinks were relatively cheap and they do have a wide variety, from beers to cocktails to margaritas.

Pros: wonderful service, quiet enough for conversation

Cons: bit of a dive, $8 margaritas at the bar weren't very good

This place was a little farther than I thought from the subway, and I didn't really appreciate walking in the rain three blocks. When I got there, it was WELL WORTH IT!

We were greeted by the friendly manager very promptly and ushered to a table. To my great relief the Magic/Lakers NBA final game was on the TV and there was room to see it!

The beer selection can be a bit daunting, but the server was very friendly and suggested good beers for us. I had the Captain Lawrence Pale Ale. Highly recommended. My friend had a glass of mead. Mead! Who serves that? It was the first time I ever tasted Mead, but it wasn't bad.

The food here is real good. Especially the wings. We wound up getting a second order. If you like heat, order hot, and not medium. Medium isn't hot enough. The server warned that nuclear is dangerous, and I didn't want to go there my first time to this restaurant. My friend had the fish tacos, and they earned her raves. Looked pretty good with sides of rice and beans.

Music on was good. Sort of a mix of old school rock and more modern indie type stuff. I'd say overall that the atmosphere rocked, prices were more than fair and I will definitely be going back the Hop Devil. Its a great deal. And that is my first Citysearch review.

Reaaly really great beer selection and they change it up every day so you can always try something new (both on tap and in bottles). Space is nice and they have a lounge connected to the grill portion, so depending on your mood you can switch between the two. I'm not a big tequila drinker, but they have a menu dedicated to that as well. Plus...they serve mead, MEAD! How cool is that :) This is a regular joint for me (and I'm not a big bar guy).

I travel from DC to NYC periodically and like a North Star, Hop Devil Grill shows me the way to good spirits and good company. The only thing that flows better than that of their transcendent beer is the charm and laughter-inducing bartenders. I recall one time, coming off the heals of a horrific divorce, I stopped by Hop Devil. And in an instant, the entertaining bartenders and convivial atmosphere helped me forget all about the evil succubus that tried to dismantle my very soul and being. Thank you Hop Devil, for not only being the best bar in the Village, but also a therapeutic counsel to my psyche. My 20% gratuity is only a drop in the bucket of the debt I owe to you.

I have been the the Hop Devil Grill twice, and so far, I really enjoy the good service and food. We had brunch there on Sunday. It wasn't very busy, so the service was naturally fast. I had the Huevos Rancheros which was tasty, and came with an awesome bloody mary for just $6.99. Beat that price anywhere, I double dare you. The food has a southwestern/Mex-Tex theme, as does some of the decor. There is TVs for watching sports, which I really like. I might be heading over to the superbowl game here on Sunday. The big draw is the beer selection. They have two big bars and like 50 taps pouring everything. and maybe another 100 different bottles of rare beers. If thats your thing, great, but they also make kickass sangria which we had on Wednesday night. Another great deal at $10 a pitcher. A full 1/2 gallon of Sangria for $10. This place truly rocks.

Awesome beer selection. Bartenders kicked butt. Overall awesome night.
I'll keep it short, this place rocks more than anything on the over populated hipster driven St. Marks. My friends and I popped into this place, not expecting to stay long, but ended up staying the WHOLE night.
The music rocked. The crowd was diverse. And it wasn't super crowded. And the bartenders were awesome...seriously, stop in and see for yourself. Not much else to say, except this bar is definitely in our top favorites now when we party in the village.

Cons: .....at one point, I heard a Britney Spears song....but I guess girls like that....

I sense trouble brewing here. This has been my favorite all-around beer bars for years, having a very wide selection of drafts and usually a relatively quiet atmosphere, along with above average bar food. It never gets so crowded that it's uncomfortable (dba, blind tiger). The staff is knowledgable and helpful; I have been hanging out here for years, and never experienced the rudeness or incompetence that some other reviewers report. But things are subtly changing: maybe the management wants to attract larger crowds.

1 Most important - Less Beer- They put in a frozen margherita machine and reduced the number of beers available by the bottle. They are slowly getting rid of the Belgian Room's focus on Belgian beers and casual atmosphere and turning it into a "lounge."

2-Worse Food- They changed the theme from a beer-lovers bar to a southwest theme, raising prices across the board and adding higher-priced and totally average tex-mex fare.

3-a fussy and strange focus on spraying air freshener around, made the air sickeningly sweet last night

I'm worried about the track the management is taking. Still a great place based on wide selection and lack of crowds, but I fear it has jumped its shark.

We live in the area and used to frequent the bar at least once a week. The selection is pretty decent. But nothing can compensate for the incredibly nasty, sarcastic, pretentious people who work there. They act like they're doing you a favor by being there.

The waitress lost my friend's credit card and told us we must have lost it ourselves. Each of the three managers working there treated us like idiots. They found the credit card the next day. Of course, no one apologized for how we were treated.

The beer might be ok but I will never set foot in this bar again.

If you can't enjoy the atmosphere, then what's the point of having good beer?

was looking forward to drinking some good beers. some guy name will who said he was the manager wouldn't leave us alone all night. he kept recommending beers that we didn't like and when we asked him to tell us about them he didn't have a clue. the bartender was definitely on something and was complaining loudly about the owners. we ordered appetizers which were obviously frozen and lacked any sort of flavor. avoid. there are so many places to go in ny and especially in the east village - why anyone would go here is beyond me.

I'm from Houston and some friends who live on the Lower East side took me here for $1 Taco Tuesday. The tacos were actually pretty good - although the Chorizo taco was by far the best (I found the chicken to be too bland). They had a large selection of hot sauces and the service was quick and efficient.

They have a lot of beers - many of which I had never heard of but I chose to try one of the locally brewed beers in a 1L stein - it was cold and very good.

This was our first stop of the night and I would recommend it for a quick bite and beer, but would say that it isn't really the kind of bar I would hang out at the entire night. That's good though because there are a ton of bars right around this one making bar hoping fun and easy in the neighborhood.

Honestly this was the worst bar experience I have ever had. The beer selection was fairly promising, but beyond that, we had the worst mussels ever (over cooked, stringy, and the dish even had shells in it- as in seashells), were given dirty plates, and the only bread available is doused in paprika. Because the food was so bad, we just mentioned to the waitress to let the chef know that he is overcooking his food. The manager then appeared and offered us a free round (that was not our intention, but it was a nice gesture), but the offer never materialized. The management is rude and cares very little about customer service. In New York, you should not have to put up with this kind of blatant disregard from a restaurant- there are plenty of other great bars in the area- don't waste your time here.

great beer selection. i've been in a few times in the last couple of weeks and the bartender told me a lot of the staff was new so maybe the negative reviews about services are no longer true. nicky knows everything there is to know about beer. she was so helpful in recommending a few beers that i really liked. they'll let you try any of the draughts before ordering and they have flights.

i had the fries with the wasabi sauce, which were great. haven't tried the burger yet but i will on my next visit.

overall, a great place to kick back with friends and try some beers you may have never heard of.

i totally agree with jep57 and t_dudzik's observations. i'm sure the bartender that was being mentioned (the 'senior' one there) is the same one who has been so rude to me and other friends. she is inattentive and quite frankly couldn't care less about customers. anyone can have a bad day so i've given the place several chances. unfortunately she was on duty many of the times, and apparently every day is a bad day.
and the prices are out of line for many of the beers. beware ordering from the belgian room. you will really get clipped for a small glass of beer. some of which are not even belgian. this makes no sense at all.
the positive of having a good beer selection is overwhelmed by the service. i have no desire to bother them with my patronage again.
this could and should be a much better beer bar. their sister bar, copperfield's is everything they are not.

When I lived in the neighborhood, I used to always order from Hop Devil. Decent burgers, awesome fries. And I love the chicken sandwich with pineapple and swiss...good times.
Anyhow, I've been out of the village for awhile now, so I stopped in for a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Perhaps my mistake was that I ordered my beer at the bar. Despite it not being too busy, it took the bartender several minutes to notice me. I asked for a menu and sat down at a regular table. I perused the menue and left it sitting right in front of me, closed. The waitress took orders at two tables surrounding me. I made eye contact and looked at my menu on the table. She didn't get it. My beer was getting low. I was hungry. She refilled the surrounding tables glasses. I tried to flag her down. She was either deaf and blind, or making a point to ignore me. What the hell? Is it because I ordered my first beer at the bar? She should still take notice of my menu, my empty beer, and the fact that I had been sitting there for half an hour. (seriously. I read a whole newspaper.)
Finally, I got up and left. Lucky for her too, because if she had finally made the time for me I would not have given her a tip.

they do have a decent beer selection, and the food is tasty, but I will never set foot in the place again. I would only get delivery from them.

This is one of the lamest excuses for a beer bar I've ever been to. My friend and I had high hopes for the place because they usually do have a decent beer selection. We've now gone there three times and each time the experience got worse and worse.

The final straw was a few weeks ago when we went there for a Belgian beer night promotion. They had some interesting beers with high alcohol content (and high prices to match). We expected many of these beers to be served in smaller than usual glasses, but the two clueless women bartending didn't know how to pour beer and were serving it in I'd guess 10 oz. wine glasses with an inch and a half to two inches of head--meaning you were lucky to get 7 oz of actual beer.

When we politely questioned our server about this she responded, "It's supposed to be poured that way--with a lot of head" and some guy, allegedly the manager, backed her up. Um, no, not when you're serving it in tiny glasses for $8 a pop. If the pour is supposed to be 33 cl I have no problem with that, but they should have actual beer glasses that come with a line indicating what that fill level is with an extra couple of inches for the head.

You don't need much expertise to pour Bud and Corona to college kids, but if you advertise yourself as a "beer bar" you should have a properly trained staff and glassware that live up to that claim.

You don't need much expertise to pour Bud and Corona to college kids, but if you advertise yourself as a "beer bar" you should have a properly trained staff and glassware that live up to that claim.

Pros: Interesting beer selection

Cons: Service, value, atmosphere

.

This is one of the best bars in town for specialty beer. The prices are decent and the selection is unbelievable. There's very few places in the city where you can buy a gigantor bottle of barley wine too. This place is also great for special events, such as brewery's regularly visiting and giving samplers along with even t-shirts. A live cover band also plays here regularly, providing a very chill atmosphere for the night. In nice weather the front is also opened up, which is great in the summer. The food is also decent since they have a large menu, especially considering this is primarily a speciality beer bar. Always a great time at HDG.

Cons: I dislike alphabet city

This place is okay--went there last night. It took me too long to get a beer, and when I got the beer it was a bit warm. The food was boring.

My friend and I found this place by accident one day walking out of the park and thought we won the jackpot! They had a brunch which included one drink. We had the fritatas and a mimosa. The fritata was excellent and the mimosa was to die for. Not to mention the service, fantastic! How exciting! Even the price was right (and we had a few more mimosas, to boot). I guess it had been about a month since I had been back but I went last weekend with two of my friends who I promised excellent food and mimosas. Well, we found they did away with the brunch but it was okay cause we liked the brunch, how bad could it be? The only excellent feature that remains is the service. Our server was extremely attentive and she was very nice. Unfortunately the burger was awful, the quesadilla tasted bland, the french fries were burnt, the wings were undercooked, even my mimosa tasted like the OJ had gone bad. What a disappointment and I was embarassed that I brought my friends there. I don't think they will ever let me pick another place again.

Cons: Food, drinks

This place has decent food but avoid the bar next door at all costs. The place sports an international list of beers but with extremely shotty services and prices (except during Happy Hour).

Hey kids, let's get ready for TGIFridays! Oh, that's right, I live in the East Village. I've been in this bar before because of their good beer selection. And I would never write a review until I came upon the two page review that is so obviously someone who is involved with the bar. It sounds like a used car advertisement. But if you've ever been in this bar you'll figure out quickly that it was also a contived effort to make a buck. So East Village beware, there are other chain restaurants just waiting for this one to make it. Maybe we will get a Chili's next or an Olive Garden!

I love this bar. It opened about a year ago, right in my neighborhood, and it has actually changed my life. Not only have I made a lot of great friends there, 'cause the atmosphere is so great with all the different spaces to hang out, but I even met my boyfriend Dave there. Dave is a self-described "beer geek".
Beer Geeks take their beer very serioiusly. They seek out different beers most every time they go out, instead of always going to an old standby like Bud or Guinness. Beer geeks are also looking for beer of exceptional quality and flavor. That is why HDG is so popular among beer geeks in NYC. 25 taps of great craft beer on the Grill side, and another five on the Belgian side. Always changing and constantly rotating, its nothing short of a beer lover's dream.
The food. Well, its not complicated, but it is exactly what you need on an evening out with friends. We like to go on Monday nights because wings are only $0.25 each and they make them the best. There is also big, steaming pots of Belgian Mussels for only $5 a crock on Mondays. Even Big Nick's can't beat that! Deeeliscious. I like mine steamed in wit bier. Other fun nights are taco tuesdays where we can get chicken, veggie and beef tacos for only $1 each.
Back to the beer though, because this is the main reason most people come. There is a crazy selection of rare and hard to find beer in the Belgian Room. Many kinds of Cantillons, trappist beers, Flanders sours, just something for any beer afficianado, and all served in its proper glass. I can't say enough about the Hop Devil Grill. Its my home away from home!

Cons: none

I've really started to like this place. It was the last stop on our East Village pub crawl, and the best by far. I wrote a longer review of it at "Scoutsider" -- it's a new site that just started up. Check it out.

Pros: Selection, quality, friendly staff

Cons: A short walk from the subway (but worth it, really)

Hop Devil Grill is a place I'd love to see do well. I've stopped by several times, and each time the beer selection was fantastic. The tap selection is changed regularly, and offers a great selection of imports and domestic micro-brews. On a nice day, you can grab a seat on the patio and enjoy a brew in the sun.

But, the place seems to be lacking identity. The menu is TGIF's style. The music is really subpar. (with no jukebox) And they haven't seemed to be able to draw a crowd. The place is always empty- in fact, too empty. There have been times that my friends and I have stopped in at 9pm on a saturday or 11pm on a Thursday, and we're literally the only ones in the place.

That said, if you're in the neighborhood and enjoy your beer, stop in for a pint.

Ended up at Hop Devil last night after my birthday party was nearly ruined by rude service at another E. Vill Bar. So much better- great beer, awesome staff, lots of space. We were a large group and they immediately accommodated us and didn't act like it was a hassle. Highly recommended- they saved my birthday party!

Great selection, Wednesdays' kill the Keg for 3 bucks a pint is fantastic! Can taste beer before buying, friendly bartenders (is that Tara Reid or what?). Wish they had TV's for sports. Overall, if you like many types of beer, go to this place you will be glad you did. Get the beer tasting instead of just one pint, experiment!!!! That's why it's called the Hop Devil.

When I first heard about this place I thought it might have had something to do with the beer, Victory HopDevil Ale. According to the bartender, Cecelia, it has more to do with a bar in Belgian named the Hop Duvel. Anyway, food is pretty good for pub grub. Service was attentive, and these guys know their beers. Like 30 beers on tap at one bar, and at another entirely different bar in an adjoining room, 6 more taps of exclusively Belgian beers! Also, like 200 different Belgian beer bottles. In addition, a ton of German, British and other worldly brews in bottles, and a good emphasis on American made beers on tap at the big bar. Overall, if you like good beer, food and service, this place is really fun.

Overall an average place with good, friendly wait staff and bartenders and average main courses. The deep fried cheesecake is amazing. Seems a bit pricey for some drinks.

Just when I thought I knew all the best places for a burger and a beer, I walk past this place. Whoa! Two bars, one with 24 eclectic taps of delicious malted nectar, mostly American with a few British and German beers mixed in. Another bar strictly devoted to the styles of Belgium, strong beers with delicately complex flavor profiles. At this bar you can get frites and mussels, and the other bar a steak or New York's best burgers. Nice staff, refreshingly clean atmosphere make for a great find. Run, don't walk to the Hop Devil Grill.
