Pegu Club

★★★★☆
The original Club Pegu was a British officers' club in Rangoon, back in the days when the sun never set on the Empire. Hand-carved wood and understated paper lamps create a timeless world, and take us back to an era when cocktails were the emperors of the bar. But this is not just a gin house with great lighting; Club Pegu is at the heart of the cocktail revolution, a reaction against flavored-vodka-slinging bartenders, those cowboys noir with the predictable tucked into their cartouches. Mixologist Audrey Saunders is the vanguard of the New Cocktail Revolution, which combines tradition, art and the excesses of this current age. Fresh juices, chartreuse, Calvados, rare bitters are all here. The Revolution also raises the bar ever higher for those who seek something new, something extra-Cosmo. New can be old, as in the Old Cuban, a champagne-based mojito, which satisfies many different tastes, all at the same time. And if what you ordered is not what your taste buds are looking for, each table has a tiny box containing four eyedroppers lemon, lime, bitters and simple syrup - for personalized adjustments. A short menu designed by chef Gavin Citron (of Citron) fits seamlessly into the concept, picking up on the Asian theme while going in new directions: Rangoon Crab Cakes, Sloppy Duck Sandwiches and the truly unique Smoked Trout Deviled Eggs are a few of the items currently offered. The atmosphere is definitely upscale, without being stuffy, and since seating is first come, first serve there is none of that VIP non-sense that caters to the orange-colored and plastificated crowds that spoil many hot spots. Here, it is truly all about the cocktails, and they are magnificent, if not completely deserving of an Imperial stamp.

A fantastic place for original cocktails. Who knew that demarara sugar gives a completely different taste than white sugar or brown sugar to a chili cocktail? It's best to go on weekdays before it gets crowded. Otherwise service can get

Such a great atmosphere at this place. you may be hard pressed to find a table, but I actually prefer the bar.

A bit pricey, buy the cocktails here are incredible. My personal favorite is the Jamaican Firefly, a spicy cocktail, topped with dried ginger.

Beautiful crowd, great service.

Cons: Service (slow)

Great atmosphere, very well balanced cocktails, good service. I had a very good overall experience at the Pegu Club. Tried out many cocktails - Red Pepper was most unusual and interesting, the rest were very good too. I'd recommend Hamachi appetizer.

I went to Pegu with one of my friends to catch up, the drinks did arrive slow, but I was in heaven when they arrived. I was very pleased with the service and the quality of the cocktails the presentation was beautiful. Once I explained to the waitress that I couldn't really find something that interested me, or more so that I was in the mood for on the menu- than the three drinks I already had, the cocktail waitress made note of my prior choices and sent me a classic cocktail that was not on the menu that was absolutely amazing... sadly enough I cannot remember the name of it , but I'll have to talk about how it tasted next time I try to order it. Although our drinking slowed down, our waitress did not push us to order or try to move us from the table, or act rude or annoyed at our slowed down ordering. She would check up on us, but never felt pressured to order. And after a while dropped the check, but made sure to let us know that if we needed anything she would continue to assist us, and that there was no rush to pay. It really made it an enjoyable experience for me and my friend, since we do need all the time in world to catch up with both our busy lives... we've decided to make it our meeting place, to catch up more often. I would suggest coming here. The people are friendly and professional. The atmosphere is relaxing and the cocktails are yummy.

The Pegu Club is located at 77 West Houston Street. It was opened by Audrey Saunders, previously the mixologist at Bemelmans in the Carlyle Hotel. She brings her knowledge of cocktails to this new location with a staff that really know how to mix a proper cocktail. They are served with a tray of additional bitters, sweets and sours so that if for some reason you are less than 100% satisfied, you can adjust your beverage to your taste. Small plates of food are available also. Comfortable upscale decor. Definitely upscale prices.Vist their website for a preview www.peguclub.com

I was at Pegu this past weekend with three friends and received some pretty bad service. The service was slow, and the waitress did not check on our table regularly. When she did, she would ask (appropriately), "do you want another drink". The only problem was that twice I had to reply, "Just the one I already ordered". Because the service was so slow, she apparently got confused and brought over a new drink even though the original order eventually had shown up. To make amends, she told us it was free, but somehow it ended up on our bill. When we pointed that out to her, she accused us of lying yet said she'd take away the charge because she uses the honor system. My friends and I were already a little annoyed at the lying accusation but she then sends over the useless manager to tell us she knows the waitress was right and although they would revise the bill "we need to make sure we tip her well." Seriously? It wasn't even about the money, but the tacky and rude way we were being treated. I've been here once before, but will certainly never go back. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere that knows how to treat its customers.

Me and my friend aren't all that into the scene of bars, loud music and partying. I just had turned 21 and wanted to experience a real lounging experience. I found Pegu Club through city search and thought it was exactly what we were looking for. When we had arrived we felt out of place (wasn't the clubs fault). We were seated all the way in the front (it looking a "waiting" area with tables). I was told by the website that reservations weren't necessary and it was open to the public. We weren't treated that way. I had asked if we could have a table/booth to sit where all the people were sitting and enjoying their drinks but the hostess gave me an attitude problem and said "Um..actually those are only reserved for people who had made reservations". These were small booths by the way. Couples started to come in and receive better treatment and got to sit wherever they wanted. I'm just going to assume it was because of how we looked so young (but was of age) and how we weren't part of the scene. We ate the special (roasted peppers), they were just okay. My drink was yummy, but very very small and hardly had any alcohol in it. My friends first mojito, was very strong and hardly had any taste to it other than alcohol. We got our bill and left. Never going here again. It also looked better in the photos. Everyone seemed to know each other in this place, and there was a lot of "get togethers" here. Not exactly a place where you could meet someone new. This isn't a place for young adults, more like business people.

I have been wanting to go to Pegu for quite some time and finally did so on Saturday night. The drinks and atmosphere definitely lived up to our expectations. It was nice to see a cocktail list of mature combinations instead of the typical fruity, sweet concoctions so common today. We sampled a few appetizers - highly recommend the crabcakes. The lighting was fabulous, the music was chill. We caught a little bit of an attitude from the hostess at first because we asked to sit at a reserved table to grab a couple of drinks before heading elsewhere for dinner. It was 6:30 and the table was reserved for 10pm. After assuring her that we would not be staying for more than an hour or two she relaxed. Our waittress was a bit unfriendly but perhaps she was nervous or new. Overall, we were impressed with our visit. I will definitely make my way back to Pegu in the future.

I went to the infamous Pegu Club on a Saturday night not too long ago. It is a very fun, crowded atmosphere and I did enjoy myself but I was look for something a little more romantic. I went back a week or two later on a Sunday for an early evening cocktail and it was the best experience. Our waitress was very polite, attentive and gave my wife and I the best suggestions. My wife had the Champagne Apricato and it is all she talks about now to all of her friends. Their varient of the Dark and Stormy is awesome as well. Usually when I think of having a good time during the week, Sundays do not come to mind. But, Thanks to the Pegu Club, it is my favorite day to drink! Saturdays are booming but Sundays are just right.

Much more elegant than the usual Drink Club locations. I was a bit worried, walking through the spooky lower door up into the hyperworld of the club. The City Search reviews complained about snobby service, and snooty attitudes. The worries were unfounded. The staff was great. When I walked in, a smiling maitress d' showed me to a table for 6... all by myself. She let me sit there for as long as it took for everyone else to show up. Waitresses, all attractive, wearing something that looked like an exotic bathrobe, were quick on the menus, order taking, and keeping up with the smiles. They didn't fret if we messed up our orders or forgot the names of the exotic cocktails the place is known for.
I had a Whiskey Smash... and it did the trick. Everyone else ordered something strange... some good, some cucumber. We had so-so satay, and great "Sloppy Duck." The portions were small for the price ($15 for 2 Whitecastle size servings of Duck), but carefully prepared. The night cost us about $40 each. High, but not deadly. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers.

I went to Pegu over the weekend with some friends and had a very good time. It was very busy but we were able to talk to the bartender and he explained the menu and we decided to try some new drinks. We had an elderflower drink which was very light and really yummy! My friend had something called a Serendipity (I forget what's in it), but I had a sip and that was great as well. The bartenders behind the bar were really down to earth and friendly. Over all a really nice night. We'll be back in, no doubt.

i went to this place a few times last year, and the service was pleasant w/ great drinks. HOWEVER, i went back on a recent busy saturday night, and while waiting for a table at the bar, the bartenders COMPLETELY IGNORED US. everyone else at the bar had a drink, but we waited for 10 minutes, sitting on stools at the bar, and no drinks, not even a quick acknowledgment of our presence. we decided to leave, and the hostess stopped us and told us our table was ready. but when we told her why we were leaving, she just smiled and said "sorry!" what made this situation worse was that the manager was behind the bar the whole time and didn't lift a finger to serve us either. there are busier places that have much better service (employees only, milk & honey, angel's share, east side co. bar, temple bar) -- so i have no reason to go back to the snooty pegu club.

I'd love to comment on the drinks but we never got any. We waited for 15 minutes at the bar and were completely ignored by the bartenders. It's right on Houston and anyone can walk in, so I don't understand the attitude. Milk & Honey is far more difficult to get into (secret phone number, false tailor storefront, strictly appointment only) and the staff are extremely helpful and attentive.

I think this place has the best cocktails and bar food in the city. The bartenders and wait staff really know the cocktails and make great recommendations for those who are new to cocktails who need advice on what to choose. The service can be a bit slow on the really crazy busy nights but this should be expected a bit and otherwise the service is very courteous and efficient.

Checked the reviews here before trying Pegu Club this past weekend, almost didn't go because so many people had described rude staff... But our evening couldn't have been more pleasant. The hostess was cheerful and nice, our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the drinks, the cocktails were sublime, and even the food was good (although don't expect large portions). The music was unobtrusive enough to let us chat comfortably, and it was sort of a world music sound--the person who complained about Billy Joel tunes was definitely there on a different night!

I love going to Pegu Club for their gin inspired martinis, especially the Earl Grey Marteani and the mojito, Gin-Gin Mule. However my experience yesterday will probably stop me from returning. My friend and I spotted a R A T walk across the floor near the table right of ours! We then saw it again the second time. We were horrified and informed the manager, but he pretended to search for it then disappeared without even apologizing. I've been to numerous bars/lounges in the city ranging from trendy to dive, but never ever experienced anything like this. Enter at your own risk!

Last night we were enjoing a birthday evening at Pegu Club having a great time and enjoying their wonderful drinks. The drink order was taking about 20 minutes when I asked the manager what was taking so long. All I did was ask him a simple question and he totally freaked out. He screamed about being obnoxious. The group ignored this ignoramus but he kept bringing it up all night. He'd come back to the table, he would go on and on to the waitresses within earshot of us until we finally decided to leave. The bill ended up being $600 and would have been much more if it weren't for his complete lack of professionalism. Too bad an otherwise great evening was ruined by the manager of the place.

The prices are a bit high relative to the amount we were getting (I believe they were $14 each). The drinks are in TINY little itty bitty 4-6 oz glasses, but I do admit they are very interesting. There was one drink that was way too sweet (it was pink and in a martini-ish glass), but otherwise, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the drinks. However, the space was a bit crowded, and we were constantly reminded not to "block" a path behind the bar which leads me to believe that the layout of the bar isn't planned out very well. The staff was neither friendly nor unfriendly (I saw other reviewers slam the bar for the staff's rudeness)-- but perhaps I'm too seasoned of a New Yorker to notice rudeness unless it's off the radar screen (like the paramount hotel bar). Overall, it was a decent enough place, good for what it is. It wasn't too crowded, which was nice, but it was definitely busy...

i used to come here every other week for a round of drinks with a friend and at first enjoyed the quality of the drinks and unusual cocktail offerings. over time, service became less attentive and drinks less impressive, but it was still an ok place to go for a night cap.

about a week ago, i took a few friends there after a wonderful dinner at omen. it was mid week and we were a party of five. after being greeted with attitude by the manager (she apparently didn't approve of the size of our group but still sat us), our waitress was not the least bit knowledgeable about the offerings on the menu and said she would get above mentioned manager to help us with our orders. after a few rounds a sixth person joined us for few minutes (without ordering anything!!) before we all were ready to pay up and move on. to our surprise, the manager had 'punished' us with a 20% surcharge on our bill, which they apparently administer to parties of 6 and over. i tried reasoning with her, mentioning that our friend who joined us at the end didn't even order any drinks and that for the most part we were a party of five. she would absolutely not back down and in the end even threatened us with the door man saying that if we would not pay the full 20% tip, she would have us thrown out. not exactly the kind of service you expect in this kind of establishment!?! probably the most unprofessional behavior of a manager that i have witnessed in ten years of living in new york so far ... sub standard and primitive.

will for sure never ever set foot into this place again and advise everyone to do the same. there are plenty of alternatives - temple bar, east side co, milk & honey (far superior to pegu), 77, etc. dont put up with the 'tude!

Pros: room to improve

Cons: terrible manager, attitude, service

It gets a bit too loud, there's no real door policy, and the drinks aren't as great as everyone says. This place got a hyped up reputation somehow, but I'm not sure what justified that. It's just like any other pricy lounge.

Pegu came highly recommended and my party was disappointed. The wait staff was diligent and knowledgeable of drinks but that is to be expected at a New York night venue that charges $15 per drink. I appreciated the condiment tray of lemon juice and bitters, etc. but overall the lounge was noisy as usual, with canned music competing with the sound of the room - we had to yell to each other from across the table. Not conducive to conversation. Any grand hotel in the City will have great drinks e.g. the Carlisle. Pegu is ideal for an unexposed well-dressed crowd.

This is my favorite place to get cocktails in the city. They are pricey but worth it. Perfect place to meet friends after work.

Truly the first place I have ever returned to again and again to experiance drinking rather than just going out to drink. The drinks here aren't meant to be knocked back in search of intoxication. They are designed for savoring though I like most of the friends I've brought struggle not to hurry on to whatever may come next which I discovered is often best left up to the gents doing the mixing and have therefore been rewarded over and over again. I loved the first time I was made a drink he termed a "classic" cocktail. It was called a sazerac. When I asked what he meant by "classic" he proceeded to pull down three or four old drink books from the library of them on their back bar and explained that cocktails aren't just a recent invention but a very fine american tradition I've found myselk experiancing again and again at the pegu club.

Pros: drinks and creativity

This used to be one of my favorite places. Delicious drinks and food with supurb, knowledgable service, including bartenders who would make you something special. Recently, it has come to my attention that the owner has instructed the bartenders to change that level of service. All drinks with cucumber are now banned because of a posting on this website that tells people to ask for a "cucumber basil drink that's not on the menu." I'm not really sure why the owner feels that banning cucumber drinks is an appropriate reaction to that post. One of the big joys of having a drink at Pegu is ordering unusual drinks that are not on the menu because the staff is willing to experiment. In fact a large portion of the "ethos" page on the Pegu Club website describes the craetive process of the "mixologists." I always thought the menu highlighted house specialties and was a starting point for people's drink desires, NOT a list of the only selections available. Needless to say I am extremely disappointed in the unwillingness to make customers what they desire in a place the supposidly highly values customer service and cocktail culture.

Gin-Gin Mule is a crowd pleaser, especially in the summer. Very refreshing! Best to go in early to get a seat at the bar. Bartenders are the most knowledgeable I've ever seen. Sevice always warm and freindly.

Do not go here if you have a group or special event. You will be treated like hell from the manager who will refuse to seat you or work with you. I have been here many times and the manager just gave me 2nd thoughts on ever coming back. She had no personality and was not willing to work with me. She told me I should have made a reservation, but their website clearly states they do not take them. They had plenty of open seating and still would not work with us.

Pegu clearly has dedicated a great deal of time and effort as evident in their cocktails, service and decor BUT- if I hear that Billy Joel song one more time... the musical selections consistently make me want to start pulling my hair out.

After having read the many "highly recommended" reviews of Pegu, a group of us decided to celebrate a friend's birthday there. The decor was nice, and the drinks were creative & good (although probably not worth the price).

The staff, however, acted like they were above providing service to the customers. Unless you want to drop $$$ to spend an evening chasing after "too cool for school" waitresses, go somewhere else. C'mon, this is NYC! There are plenty of places to drop cash and get good drinks + good service. This place has seen its glory days, and the staff might want to start looking for real modeling jobs soon.

perched above houston street, pegu club serves pretentiously delicious drinks (many gin-based innovations) in a space ostensibly fashioned after an historic british officers' club in rangoon, burma. i haven't been to rangoon but i imagine the spaces are less air-conditioned and the locals are nicer. the doorman may have ties to the viet cong and the servers are, well, i rarely meet servers in n.y.c. who are better at acting put out and overwhelmed while pouting blandly.

go here before 8 p.m. to sample a truly great cocktail but do not expect to be treated respectfully. and do not, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, choose this locale for a large group gathering. pegu's management and interior design seem to simultaneously implode once more than 20 i-banker dweebs and the women who love them show up. bottom line: does not compute.

Tonight I stopped in to Pegu, as has become my habit. It was relaxed and cool. The bartenders are great. The cocktails are fabulous. This is not a place to order woo woo or to wax poetic about where to find the best cosmo in Manhattan. This is an old fashioned cocktail lounge where the art of the cocktail is respected and the rules of civility are expected. I think that was Glen Miller on the stereo tonight. Marvellous. I wonder if some of the negative reviews of this place originate from folks who simply don't get what this place is all about. I do and it's my new regular joint.

Went here for an intimate birthday celebration with two girlfriends. Could not have picked a better place - sophisticated cocktails, polite staff, chic environs, music does not overpower conversation, etc. I went on a Thursday which was great, but I imagine this place must be pa-acked on weekends. Oh the secret drink is the cucumber mint special (not basil) and it is FAB. Like a mojito but crisper.

If you have a good discerning palate, and are willing to pay money for some good quality product, you will really appreciate the Pegu Club. In fact, I loved my experience there. We went a Thursday and the place was not crowded, which made the upscale lounge atmosphere very relaxing and inviting. All top-shelf, these brilliant combinations made by the bartenders really make you think that you are in the presence of a great chef or an alchemist. We were in good hands with the bartender, who we just asked to dazzle us and he did. Ask for the cucumber basil drink- its not on the menu, but its amazing.

I was at Pegu last night with a few friends from out of town hoping to show them a few great cocktails and Pegu pulled it off. While it was pretty crowded we were given a table for our group right away. We ordered 2 rounds of drinks and left very happy. The wait staff we had interaction with were professional and very knowledgeable about any questions we asked about their cocktail creations. I highly recommend the velvet harvest, it was amazing.

I have been to pegu 4 or 5 times now and have not experienced any of the rude behavior expressed by other people writing reviews. I have always had my drinks at the bar and in addition to being served perfect cocktails by their professional bartenders, I have never seen them be rude to anyone in all my times there.

If you want an excellent cocktail, professionaly made in a wonderful setting this place if for you. If you want an amstel light, you probably want to go elsewhere.

I've spent many an evening at Pegu, and have loved every single one of them. Audrey and her staff are professional, friendly, and love to talk with anyone who's interested in the art of the cocktail. Ask them to make you one of what they're working on - you won't be disappointed, and it's always fun to be part of history in the making. If you order off the menu, try the Fitty-Fitty or the Old Cuban - my faves, definitely. Try for a seat at the bar - watching them shake those cocktails is fun, but getting expert advice and insight into what you should have to drink is funner.

I had drinks last night there with my husband and it was awesome! We let the bartender choose a cocktail for us, and he whipped up a Last Word cocktail for him, and a Jack Rose for me. Amazing! They were happy to explain to us the origin of the cocktail as well offering up suggestions for other drinks we would like since we liked these so much. The place was crowded, but not overly so and the waitstaff was great. The drinks are slightly pricey, but given the time and care they are made with it is well worth it.

The ambiance and the elegant (delicious, artistic, old school) cocktails would make me come back to this place a thousand times over. But I will advise - I tried to ask the bartender a little bit about their unique and not-so-intuitive drinks and he was completely rude! He just acted put out and annoyed that I was bothering him. I was surprised, but reading the other reviews confirms that I'm not the only one. Pegu is still worth going to - just bear in mind the bartenders may display behavior that is usually reserved for the subway or an overcrowded deli line.

I have never received worse insult in my life. After one hour of being seated and my party of five ordering several drinks, we asked for glasses of water. Suddenly the manager appears and proceeds to chastise us, gesturing to the crowd waiting for seats, claiming that we cannot simply sit for 'more than an hour' and order water all day. By the way, water NEVER came. But looking around, I noticed the other seated patrons have been sitting when my party cam in. This kind of condescending attitude and unbelievable biasness, is unexceptable at any lounge, even if it is a Saturday night at a lounge in New York city. This type of behavior simply cannot warrant a 9.8 rating. I have crossed Pegu off my list of lounges forever and will discourage the place to any friends, family, and colleagues for any corporate events.
