This is one of my favorite places to bring out-of-town visitors for brunch and/or coffee, not so much for the food, prices and service but for the ambience and location. The decor inside is sunny and charming, and the outside seating area is a wonderful place to linger over coffee and dessert or a glass of wine (or two!) in the afternoon. Really the only drawback I find in this aspect is that like many restaurants in Europe, the seating is tiiiiight. You'll probably be sitting on top of the people at the table next to or behind you, and if you're seated at a banquette prepare to be trapped for the entirety of your meal.

Service is excellent when first arriving; guests are usually greeted and seated quickly. The manager, who seats a good deal of time is very good about recognizing repeat customers, and he does a good job of making me feel special. The waitstaff provides less timely and friendly service past the initial seating, and even after multiple visits I'd go so far as to say they are lax. Most of them have a charming French accent, but that doesn't make up the spotty service.

The food is good to fine, comprised largely of traditional French food that would appeal primarily to the American palate. Although the French are fond of such fare, there's no tripe, calf's head or calf's liver dishes to be found here. Wine quality and selection seems par with the food. The prices strike me as par with the quality and amount of food. If you take advantage of the different specials they have each night (e.g., Monday steak night, Wednesday 1/2 wine), the prices are even downright good.

All-in-all, I'd have to say that Cafe du Soleil has both its strong and weak points, but I enjoy it enough to return repeatedly.

A friend used to go for the food and took me this time. He raved about the food but warned me that it would be slow. Slow is not the word for it - rude and indifferent. I understand waiting for freshly prepared quality cuisine but this was not the case. The chef, Matt, was there hanging out with his friends, and greeting others. When the food finally came, my friend said that it was totally not the same quality as it had been and he was sorry that he'd recommended it.

The chef hired someone else to do his job but he's not helping the waiters provide good service - maybe they should come over to my office and try being a lawyer!

Go to PicNic and save your night.

I went for breakfast last Friday morning. In addition to the fact that 2 eggs bacon and potatoes were 12.95 and coffee an additional 2.75' it came with no bread or toast. Ok, so the prices are absurd. The bill with tax came to 17.31. i gave the snooty French waiter a 50.00 dollar bill and he brought me 32.00 dollars change. Now I know its only .69 cents that he shorted me but after paying an absurd amount for Bacon eggs and coffee, the fact that he ripped me off just incensed me. i called him over and it took me 5 minutes to explain that he made a mistake. he gave me attitude to boot. He went over to the bar to get me the rest of my change and after I waited another 5 minutes i just walked out.

We have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years & haven't been there for a long time. Arrived at 10pm....person standing at door didn't acknowledge us for atleast 5 minutes so we continued looking at menu....then another waiter joined him & flirted w/ a girl...growing impatient, we walked in & asked a waiter if they were still open...he was very rude. We sat down & noone came to us for another 5 minutes...no water, nothing! when waiter came to table (with no water) we said we had questions...he hurriedly answered one question then walked away immediately, not allowing us to ask another question. We walked out and never going back & won't recommend. It's sad that wait staff can leave such an impression on a restaurant since I know the food has been good.

I'd give them no stars if I could.

I live nearby and have gone to C du S a number of times since they have opened ( many years now). The service is unbelievably bad- the waiters are pretty much always RUDE, you have to wait unbelievable amounts of time to get served. Tonight I stupidly forgot all of this and ordered ONE dish for delivery. I was told it would be 40 mins at the most, and I have now been waiting 1 hour and ten minutes. When I called to enquire how much longer, they gave me so much attitude just for asking. The man who answered the phone said " What do you want me to do about it?"
It's just not acceptable service, especially for the prices.

I went there on Sunday for Brunch and the place was busy (good sign). We were 4 and only had to wait for 5 minutes to get a table. 2 seconds after we sat down the waitress came to ask us what we wanted to drink so we kindly ask her to give us couples of more minutes... We all order eggs and weren't disappointed but our glasses of water were never refilled, waiter kept on pushing our chairs (we were next to the door) and asking us are you finish every 10 minutes...it was just a very stressful and noisy atmosphere and not typically what you are looking for Brunch.

All I can say is WOW. Cafe DS was truly an amazing experience.
I travel to New York on business at least once a month and always look for interesting restaurants I can dine solo. I went to Cafe Du Soleil on a Tuesday night and was surprised to find amazing live Jazz music and what seemed to be a young hip local crowd. I sat at the bar and ordered an amazing ( and inexpensive) Bourdeaux and an appetizer. The bartender suggested the mussels. The were so flavorful I had to stop myself from ordering more. I opted for a chocolate dessert that was so delicious it was devoured very quickly.
Everything was fabulous, from the food, to the service and even the chef ( I had the opportunity to engage in conversation with Chef Tivy)
I will definitely return on my next trip to NY

I visited Cafe du Soleil when last in New York, as a visitor to New York from a more modern country I was relieved to find that they would serve my son and I wine, (my son is seventeen and after being through America I found it difficult to eat a meal without him being able to enjoy it properly.

The waiters are well traveled and can speak to you about a variety of countries, I found this entertaining and after living in France for 10 years I can say the escargot was as good as any on the Champs-Elysees.

In short however I would like to say that as one living in Queenstown, New Zealand now it indeed was a relief to dine like I wasn't in the United States, (I love the place, can't stand some of the picky rules, you know how it is). I commend Cafe du Soleil, I can do it no justice, the meals were dirt cheap, they could double the prices, I will come here with my son every time we come to New York.

Dining at Cafe du Soleil was the WORST dining experience! The food was tasteless and the service was awful! The restaurant is small and noisy. The managers put as many tables and chairs in the small space that they possibly could. The waiters served coffee and meals over my shoulder. My chair was pushed each time a waiter went pass me. My vegetarian burger was tasteless. My sister ordered the whole wheat pancakes and only the top pancake was whole wheat. The pecans that was suppose to be a part of her meal was missing.

We didn't eat most of our food but while we were having conversations with our friends, bus boys took our plates without asking if we were finished. And when we finally said we were finished, they cleared out the place mats, silverware, trash, everything as if they had to clean the table for a fungus!

It was as if we were not welcomed there. I have eaten all over the world and this experience was the absolute worst! Save your money and go to a better restaurant.

I really wanted to eat the same food that I am used to eat in France, in Nice. I came to Cafe du Soleil, not only the food was the same, very good, but also the atmosphere. During my dinner with my friends I forgot that I was in Manhattan. The staff is very nice, many of them are french. So If you want to discover or to feel like in France go to Cafe du Soleil.

Unless you have endless patience for average food, go elsewhere. This place needs new management. I think the many other Citysearch reviews complaining about the service have said it all.

Overall good place, the food's great and service, while certainly French and in some ways needing a jump start, was on point my last visit. The waiter was attentive and recommended the lavender creme brulee for dessert, which was delicious. For my neighborhood, this is one of my mainstays for brunch and a Tuesday or Wednesday night dinner - when you can hear your guest talking to you. One last thing: go for the garlic fries, if nothing else.

I go to this restaurant about once a week since moving to the neighborhood back in May. The staff are courteous and friendly--if not the most fast or efficient. The wine list is good and everything I've had on the menu is great--the baked tomato appetizer with goat cheese is especially good. And they have Kronenbourg beer on draft, which goes down great with steamed mussels. I'm always looking over at other people's dishes, and everything always looks appetizing. I never tried their takeout or delivery service...It's not a 5-star dining experience by any means, but what keeps bringing me back is the down-to-earth ambience, the airiness of the decor, and the great people-watching (the place is always packed.) It's a fine neighborhood hangout--perfect for a lingering lunch or dinner with a close friend.

After waiting two hours to receive my delivery, my food arrived cold. I had to call the restaurant twice looking for my food and I informed them when I called the 2nd time that if the food was cold I would refuse payment. She agreed. So that is exactly what I did. I called after I recieved the food (3rd phone call) to make sure they would not be charging my credit card and was told that only a manager could authorize that and when I asked for a manager I was told to call back during a more convenient time for the manager. This is the worst experience I've had with delivery and will be reporting accordingly with appropriate principals. BEWARE! If the management cannot simply pick up the telephone to offer an apology for a two late and COLD meal, beware of what else they will walk away from. VERY DISAPPOINTING!

I had a tuna burger, while my friend had the salmon burger. Both sandwiches were very good, and the fries were great. The lunchtime price of 9.95, which included the fries and a small side salad, can't be beat. HOWEVER, the service was horrendous. We were seated and then ignored for ten minutes. After someone finally took our order, it took another ten minutes for water and bread to arrive. Our water glasses were never refilled, despite the fact that the hostess noted that I needed more water and promised to send someone over. The restaurant wasn't very busy, and there were more than enough servers on hand, but everything was haphazard - the servers ambled about with no purpose, no one seemed to have any particular tables assigned to them, and nothing got done. Other diners seemed similarly frustrated - we watched in sympathy as people searched in vain for someone to bring ketchup, water, checks, etc. Too bad - the food was good.

Was just walking along and this place caught my eye, so my fiancee and I ducked in to get some late lunch. Our waiter was impatient, seated us next to a noisy couple and his tone of voice was rather disrespectful as he took our orders. We asked to be reseated, but couldn't have the wide open table we wanted, however the new table sufficed. The cheeseburger I ordered was excellent and flavorful, while the veggie burger my fiancee has was quite terrible. The fries were great. It took patience to get our waters refilled and I think I celebrated two birthdays in between the time I requested the check and the time it actually arrived. If it wasn't for the great burger, I would have been totally put off that this place got even a dime off me.

The food was great, the insects (citysearch doesn't allow me to say what kind, use your imagination) crawling up the wall and across the table next to me were disgusting. I let the server know I had smooshed one with my napkin before it could scurry toward the unwitting customers seated next to me. She responded by shrugging and saying, "It's New York." When several more appeared and started crawling around by our booth, we again let her know and said we wanted the check. She brought it, along with our desserts, even though we said we wanted out of there. It turned out she had brought the wrong check, many dollars more than our own. She brought the right one and appeared to mention what had happened to the manager, but took nothing off the check to compensate for our nasty disease-ridden company. Perhaps she had assumed we were tourists. I'm calling to report them to 311, so the city will be checking in with them soon ? but I would still advise avoiding this place like the plague.

...I'm wondering if we lucked out. Had a late dinner on a weeknight, when we were given the choice of a table the hostess said "this table wobbles" as she pushed down on it to show us - I asked if a book of matches or something could be put under the unstable leg and she just gave me a blank look (WTF?) - I've waitresed before, and fixing a wobbly table is no big deal, you just do it!

Once we found non-wobbly table, we were served in a timely manner, no major complaints. 4 of us each had a glass of wine and would have probably ordered another round, but the waitress never asked us. Water glasses were filled promptly.

The food was GREAT, prices reasonable. My chicken dish literally melted in my mouth, and the others at our table liked their food as well. I will agree about the low lighting and the noise level, the night we were there it was very crowded (surprising for a weeknight in a residential area), and I remember having to talk loudly to be heard by the others at our table.

Would I go back? Yes, but with caution. I'm just glad that the food was well prepared and priced reasonably - I'd rather have that than bad expensive food in a quiet well lit room....
I loved the neighborhood, not touristy at all (we were probably the few tourists in the place, trying to pass as locals!). Plus, very easy subway access.

Pros: very good food, reasonable prices

Cons: noisy when crowded, wobbly tables that can't be fixed?

I left my tip cash, payed by card. Checked my account after I got home, they re-opened my card and charged me additionaly without my authorization.
Next day I went there to complain and they gave me the attitude and "sent" me to my credit card company. The owner woman didn't even say a bad word to the waiter who served , only with the proof they took money from me, just asked him "how did that happened" (in myself, after I signed the bill and left, he used his fingers and typed the code to re-open and press the amount he want to take, then you press OK and got my money. Could have been thousands!!!).
They gave me attitude instead of apologizing and having technically criminals working there. I had to call the police, next step BBB and Federal Trade Comm.

This place has the worst service on the UWS - servers would rather chat than talk to you. They took our drink order 3 times but they didn't arrive until after the entre. Whoever thinks that this is "typical French service" either hasn't been to France or is the restaurant's PR rep.

The noise here is so bad that people entered and left without ordering and they lowered the lights during the dinner. Couldn't figure that out at all. Tried it again for brunch, when the service was worse. I've never been forced to wait 30 minutes for coffee that cost as much as that. The food was average and it's close to home but totally not worth the price or effort.

Pros: Location

Cons: SERVICE! SERVICE , Prices, Noise

Although the service isn't great as they're often busy and rushing around, the food is a great deal for its price. Very classic French, well prepared and aesthetically pleasing, I don't really mind the service, as it's really no ruder/slower than service in a typical brasserie in Paris.

We enjoyed Sunday Brunch here on April 23, 2006. The ambiance was lovely, chicken crepes delicious and all around great bistro. Nice addition to the neighborhood.

My friends and I went into this place at around 8pm and the lighting was as normal as any restaurant. But by the time our food came out, someone had lowered the lights to a point where we couldn't see our food and I chewed into large chunks of orange peel in my beef stew that was meant for favoring.
When we asked if the waiter could put the lights back on, he said:"we have this complaint every night but the owner thinks it's more 'Parisian'!" We said that we all have been to Paris and one even lived there for several years and we never encoutered this.
The waiter said "I am just a waiter!"
When other patrons came in later, they began handing out flashlights. This is simply the most surrealistically idiotic place. Food is not bad but the owner doesn't think he needs patrons.

It really saddens me to say that I would never go back to this restaurant again especially since my husband proposed to me here when the restaurant first opened. Unfortunately, we like the food and the ambiance but the service is always horrible. Just expect to wait a good twenty minutes before they take your order (even when the restaurant is half empty), you'll have to ask at least 5 waiters and a manager for coffee before they bring it to you and when they bring your orders out wrong, expect the manager to side with the chef and not you. We expessed our disappointment to our waiter and the manager nicely but all they could do is roll their eyes and walk away. I understand that working in a restaurant is tough but there is no need to be rude, pompous and smug.

While dining with our infant son at around 6:30 p.m., the customer at the table next to ours (who had just seated himself and was only drinking, not eating) began smoking in an area not designated for smoking. He refused to extinguish his cigarette. We informed the hostess of the problem and she rudely refused to remedy the situation, apparently because he was a friend of hers. The waitress also did nothing to remedy the situation.

Delicious fares, friendly atmosphere, spacious sunny terrace. Every time we go there we have a pleasant experience. It is a comfortable restaurant with good classic French fare. The decor is beautiful and the staff accomodating.

Went here for brunch. Host asked other waiter if we should be seated inside or outside but never asked us. Had to ask twice for coffee - better than lady to our left who had to ask FOUR TIMES. Very slow service and extremely loud in there esp. considering there were only 5 tables filled. Waiter had to lean on my husband to give people next to us their food. We had to ask 3 times to get our check. The food was good but at some point you're paying for more than just the food.

I eat out for every meal in Manhattan and I've never heard more simultaneous complaining within one restaurant. 2 servers for a packed brunch = 15 minute wait for water/bread, 25 minutes for 2 glasses of wine to arrive, the meal arrives in ok time except for the fact that we ordered an appetizer which doesn't show up until the end. Man, this is why I brunch below 14th st. The service is just awful at this place, although it looks like it would be great from the outside. :(

Had their shell steak and fries which were pretty good. I ate at the bar with my sister and the bartender was an absolute doll. Very attentive even during the busy dinner hour. Didn't like my sister's pasta dish-- porcini and pancetta strozapretti.
