Always bustling, this cafe on 3rd has a great selection of coffee drinks, sandwiches, salads and breakfast foods. Lots of tables mean you can likely get a seat, although a power outlet can be hard to find if you're trying to work. Nice seats outside, though (watch out for pigeons). Effy's is your best shot for a sidewalk cafe on the UES.

I have been going here off and on for a few years, mostly because it's next to Starbucks. However, I'm finally done with the terrible attitude of the owners. The guys who work behind the counter seem nice enough and work fast but the guy at the register? He is terrible. No sense of customer service at all. It's like he's doing you a favor by ringing you up. They also say they take credit cards but in the year since they've said that, the machine is always broken. The wait for the food is abnormal and not worth it. The best part, the owner talking on the phone and not even acknowledging you're standing there. Decided after the last time that my so-so breakfast (lunch here is much better) isn't worth it.
Pros: outdoor seating, nice menu
Cons: terrible service, poor attitude
My gf and I live a few blocks away and randomly decided to stop here for breakfast. My wrap was decent, but her quiche was bland and soggy. The best thing about the meal were the lattes.
We were rather disappointed as the menu has some very interesting items we normally would have come back to try. However, the first meal being as average as it was, we won't be coming back.
Pros: Interesting menu, not your common breakfast cafe
Cons: Staff had trouble with English, the food is hit and miss
I was ignored at the counter to place my order, and once I did, I waited over 20 minutes for a toasted bagel with cream cheese, while others around me were served their eggs. When I did receive my order, for #2.50 there was no cream cheese.
Disappointing; it was empty that day and it's a nice spot to sit at.
Pros: outside seating
I waited 45 minutes for an order of two eggs over easy -- this was at a time when the cafe was almost empty. Also prices vary for the same order -- as much as a dollar for the order of eggs. I am wondering if the "tip" box on the counter has anything to do with it -- if you contribute or not. Food is tasty, but service and attitude is lousy!!
Pros: Food is tasty
Cons: Bad attitude of counter people; long long wait; varying prices.
Excellent breakfast and lunch cuisine. Perfect neighborhood spot, but well worth a long New York walk. The Shakshukra (sp?) is amazing! And the staff is always friendly and helpful.
Pros: everything
Cons: so popular...it gets crowded quick!
