The interior is nice, if a bit generic for Brooklyn bars, but the real draw for this place is its sizable patio, complete with a number of tables for gatherings of many sizes.

Pros: Nice atmosphere, the large patio in back

Cons: Bigger beer selection would be nice

This is a great place with an elcectic jukebox, a magnificent selection of bourbons, an entertaining assortment of regulars and a great patio during warm months. The crowd may be 30-something, but that just means they have had more time to fortify their livers and cultivate a taste for great music and conversation.

I've done a lot of drinking in my day, but nothing compares to Commonwealth in Brooklyn. Amazing Jukebox, great bartenders, great lighting, and fantastic customers. And it's cheap! Get thee there!

I was in there the other night and I had a great time! Everyone was friendly. The jukebox was a little intimidating at first but you can't make a mistake. Every song is good and I like that there are no TVs. People talk to each other.

The jukebox is lovely to look at and has loads of my favorite indie rock as well as other sorts of rock I like to hear. I'm happy to feed it dollars, but if the other drinkers beat me to it, that's fine with me since, really, any song on it is welcome to my ears. The bartenders are a fantastic bunch. I would go to Commonwealth just to see the bartenders, but the patrons turn out to be friendly and intelligent, too. Is my favorite one the guitar god from Long Island with an eleven-year-old daughter? Or maybe it's that twentysomething editor of nonfiction who has something interesting to add to almost any topic and who, if you're lucky, will get drunk enough to sing along to a country song and fall asleep with his head in his hand.

Pros: The chalkboard, outside, is funny

Cons: My boyfriend, stays there, too late

If you are someone from the mid west looking for a beer then this is your placehowever if youve grown up in any sort of a city your better off passing it by. The decor is non-existent, the crowd is 20 somethings floating there way trying to make it in the citynot good

i'm sorry. though i know i should just stay in my own damn neighborhood, once the northwest corner of the 'lower east side,' now the center of the 'east village' on the island of manhattan. and i leave my neighborhood, but almost always on foot for points within a few minutes walk. but occasionally i must take the subway south and then east over to park slope, get off at the 4th ave stop, infiltrate. i go for one reason only, i don't litter during my walk from the subway, i go straight there, and i keep to myself. but i have to go now and then to the bar, to the commonwealth. i miss it when i'm not there. i miss it when i'm in other bars. i'm sorry... (but don't try to stop me)

The service was ok and the bartender was friendly but it is not what i expected. After reading some of the reviews i checked it out and found it a bit different from what i expected. For one, it is not a mix crowd. Also, the music seemed to all sound the same. I'm not sure what it was called but it just wasn't of my taste. There were a few people in there and as soon as me and my friends walked in it seemed as it got quiet and all eyes were on us. weird. Overall it's not that bad, if you fit in with the crowd.

I never thought I could drag myself off my barstool at the Royale, but Commonwealth is becoming my second home away from home. Killer juke, wonderful cheese and a very nice relaxed crowd/staff. A really wonderful addition to the neighborhood.

This bar is a perfect fit for those who grew up left of the dial; the jukebox is as comprehensive as you can get without resorting to mp3s. The staff is very friendly, the crowd is the definition of "mixed," it doesn't try to be a faux-dive bar, and there are cool events (Scrabble on Sundays, Drinking Liberally on Wednesdays, and the debate-watching parties were great fun). The incredible variety of bourbons is also a real treat.

Great tunes. Great drinks. Good looking crowd. Clean. Warm. Good chesse platters. Abusive towell dispensers. Grafittit that mentions Voltaire. Sex is in the air. Go, go, go.

My friends and I call it "The Clubhouse". We meet there before and after almost any evening activity, and frankly it usually is the evening activity. The staff are like pals, the decor is warm and tasteful and the bar itself is quite handsome (it actually features a bar: some places forget you need to put your foot up when you bell- up.). Commonwealth's renowned Juke is stuffed full of Indie Rock, Garage Rock, Punk Rock and Rock Rock - plus real soul, R&B, and rockabilly. It comes with its own throne! My fun is grazing through the array of bourbons. For weekend afternoons I recommend the Texas style Bloody Marys. Sundays feature a Scrabble tourney, though I can't make that applicable to my hungover and dog-haired head. Never too crowded, definitely not trendy, and they allow dogs. They sell "Kentucky Beer Cheese". What else do you want?

The bartender brought in his TV for election night, and despite the outcome it was a really good time. These folks are smart, and they care -- the bar was packed with hopeful liberals, and when Ohio went Bush some people cried; the bartender bought them shots. When the glorious jukebox finally got turned on, the first two songs played were "Fortunate Son" and "Gimme Shelter". Brilliant. I've gone there pretty much every night since then, and it hasn't failed to be fun. There's a great mix of people, straight and gay and black and white and young and old and otherwise. And the chalkboard is always good for a chuckle.

Editorial from

The Scene
Dedicated south Slopers have been waiting for this bar a long time; so long, in fact, that most of them are in their 30s and have mellowed from the wild days of youth. Despite its clean-cut atmosphere--wooden bar, red…
