Dove! Why are your breaking my heart?? This is (was) my favorite bar in New York since I moved here in 2006...easy atmosphere, nice staff, delicious cocktails, so great to slip into those Victorian plush couches by the fire or the huge

I guess it's the acoustics... and the crowd. It looks like a quaint little place, hidden away underground on Thompson Street in the Village. But when you go it, it's so loud (not from music, but from every one shouting to be heard over everyone else shouting to be heard), that the quaintness dissolves in the cacophony.
The girls liked the place a lot. The staff was extra friendly and accommodating... allowing us to move around to better and better seats, until we finally ended up in the window! The waiters, manager, busboy, everyone was super attentive and just as friendly. I liked 'em a lot. The girls fell in love with them.
Our group seemed to have the only non-occidentals in the bar. Except for our server, the bar was so white I thought I was in West Virginia. Where did they come from? Who knew there were so many in New York City of all places?
The food was on the expensive side, with a small dish of Olives going for $6, and a dozen pieces of toast with various toppings, topping out at a whopping $30. It was good, especially the cheese mushroom, but not $30 good. The beer selection was okay, and normal priced at $6 for a tap beer. The food is what'll set you back. So make sure you've got some space on your credit card before you go in... and plenty of lung power to shout above the din. Oh yeah, bring your sunglasses, the whiteness of the crowd may be blinding. --Drink Club is a Roving Group of NYC Drinkers

Cons: Very loud, expensive food

I haven't been to The Dove, but upon reading the negative reviews by the whining yuppies, I can't wait to go. I'll be in NY next week for a vacation from bartending in San Francisco. I always use cash, never credit cards (I'm no fool), and I plan to ask to be served by the bitchy redhead?sounds like my kind of gal! I pride myself on my high negative ratings on YELP.

Not a bad atmosphere, hasn't been completely taken over by the hip crowd. The tea sandwich sampler was fantastic and generally the staff was helpful and pleasant. Except, avoid the red head female. She is completely rude and for no reason. The rest of her equals were great. We asked for a plug to charge a phone, she gave us the brush off and said "ya we don't do that." Another worker saw this and said.."go ahead there's one over there." over the course of the evening and her rudely interjecting and actually giving dirty looks we found that the phone had been unplugged and tossed to the side. In making eye contact with her, we got that "ya I'm the b%#CH that did that for no reason." So go there, but tell the redhead to f-off.

Pros: Intimate, Good Snacks

Cons: Can be crowded, need reservations for seating usually, evil redhead

I just found out what The Dove is doing for their new years party and it kinda blew my mind. Get this, on what is probably one of the most lucrative nights of the year for any bar, they are giving all the money they make to charity! Wow. I work for a non-profit org. and let me tell you, we need more businesses like this in New York. The party sounds good too: open bar, absinthe (is it real???) and a burlesque show. If I was gonna be here for new years, I would have already bought my ticket. But I'm headed to Paris, so don't feel too bad for me!

I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite bars in the city. I've gone to the Dove a handful of times and always had such a pleasant experience whether I was on a date or just with friends after work. So last week I decided to throw my sister's 30th birthday party there. Of course, I always stress out when I am the host and I know how picky my sis can be, so needless to say, I was worried and wanted everything to be perfect. And it was! The Dove is so festive and pretty inside so its perfect for special occasions. We reserved a table ahead of time so we had space and the staff was so so kind to us...really lovely people. We ordered light snacks from the food menu and they even had these cute mini cakes. And its official, I'm addicted to the french lavender cocktail!

I've heard good reviews about this bar and went with a couple of friends for happy hour drinks. We were asked to move locations 3 times. After the third request, we politely declined. After that we were basically harrassed by the waitstaff and told that the table we were sitting on was reserved at 2 different times by 2 different waitresses. When confronted about the discrepancy, they scurried away and left us alone briefly. We then were told that the party for the table arrived 40 minutes early. Fed up,we left. In all my many bar experiences in New York, this is one of the worst bars I have been to. The drinks were inexpensive but not very good. There were too many hostesses/ waitresses (about 6 for this tiny place) whose job was to shift people around and be slightly obnoxious. The only positive is the beautiful decor.

Well it was my first time to the Dove Bar and I really must say it was quite lovely. The music was great, it was a nice and cozy retreat from the chilly streets of NYC..... Everything was almost perfect until I met our waitress. Now I worked in the bar industry for 6 years prior to my current job. I know everyone has a bad day but her complete lack of interest in our (15 person) table, general nasty attitude and abrasiveness stuck out like a sore thumb in the otherwise generally pleasant environment. Would I recommend it, absolutely, just don?t expect a warm welcome or a smile for that matter from your server or you may be disappointed.

I agree with everything the other users wrote. Nice place, nice bartenders, inventive drinks and the prices were competitive w/other bars, however, The Dove may very well be the BEST smelling bar in NYC. I have no idea how they did it but it has a very fresh and light candle scent, which as anyone knows is next to impossible to maintain in most any bar. I"ll be back for the smell alone! :)

I was so suprised to find out that the Dove has started serving food!!! And I was even more suprised at how good it was!!! The menu is light with cute things like tea sandwiches and mousse cakes that remind me of having lunch at the Plaza hotel -- it fits perfectly witth the dove's cute atmosphere. They also have unique cheeses to taste and these amazing marcona almonds that are totally addictive! The menu is pretty small and simple but with really sophisticated ingredients. And of course, everything goes well with all their fantastic red wines...

I think this is my new favorite bar! So cute inside! Great music! And very friendly staff, which is rare in New York CIty! There is no pretension here, just great atmosphere and great cocktails and wine. Had such a good time at their happy hour that I forgot my wallet which had a bunch of cash in it! they went above and beyond to contact me and I actually got my wallet back with absolutely nothing missing! So refreshing to be so well taken care of during and after my visit to the Dove.

DO NOT OPEN A TAB HERE. PAY CASH. Went here for Happy Hour with a few close friends. Found it odd when one friend left with only a $12 bar tab after 3 hours of drinking and eating. Only later to find out that not only had her drinks and food been put on my tab, but additionally another $81. Instead of taking off these charges, they ran my credit card thru twice resulting in me getting charged around $200. BEWARE! Make sure you keep an eye on your tab, or you too might end up paying for a bunch of strangers night of fun! DO NOT GO HERE!

A great, grown-up place in a neighborhood full of college bars. Nothing wrong with a beer-soaked fraternity party, but the Dove is a nice exception. Deserves its romantic reputation, though it can get pretty crowded on the weekends. Attracts a pleasant crowd. Fantastic ambience, attractive decorations, great couches if you can snag one, and good happy hour prices. Absolutely worth visiting.

I finally got to check this place out after walking by it so many times. I was curious after i read some review calling The Dove a "bar for people who like to read." Sounds weird, but totally true - this is an intellectual's bar. No rowdiness here (at least not at 10pm on a Friday night), just cozy groups/couples chatting it up. I love the decor in this place too - victorian, lush red upholstery, ample seating, cool center ceiling. They played varied music, some i liked better than others, but all of it was happily muted so that you could hear what your companions were saying. My only disappointment was that I didn't get there in time for the happy hour (ends 8pm)! I had a Peach Cobler specialty cocktail - creamy peachy goodness (no sick refs intended), $9, well mixed. I would definitely come back! It's a good place for a small gathering or a date.

I have never been to a bar that has been as accomodating as The Dove. There were 8 girls in our party nor had we reserved a table. Even though the place was fairly crowded when we arrived the hostess (potentially owner?) continually made sure we were sitting somewhere and comfortable. The place also had charm and was very laid back. Service was great. It was an all around great time!

The Dove is the best bar I've been to in a long time! As a single guy, it's nice to be able to actually carry on a conversation with women- there's no loud music, no sports on TV, and no meatheads to bump into. Just a classy place, nice decor, mellow music, great service, and relatively inexpensive. Also would be a great "first date" place- very romantic lighting and she'll be very impressed that you know of such a cool place :)

Pretend you are in the west village and have had enough of the overridden, college laden, beer soaked floor, beatass radio music bars which are ever so commonplace. There is a safe haven for you in the chess district on Thompson St. The owners have intelligent and ecclectic tastes in music while presenting their establishment with charm and an honest smile. The drinks are excellent, the service is better, and the ambiance is top notch. We always end up at the Dove. Bravo.

The Dove has become mine and my friends favorite place to meet. Before we go out, after we leave a party or to bring a group of folks together for an all day affair. The feel of the place is comfortable, the bartenders are as friendly as they come and they have a great selection of beers and wine. We have to TRY to go to other bars but we always end up going to The Dove anyway. Check it out, but I warn you that you may become addicted.

this has quickly become my favorite place to get a drink or two before dinner. the specialty drinks are tasty and unique, and while the little snack things in the cute tea cup don't really go very well with the drinks, i love em anyway because those too are really tasty. the atmosphere here is great - it feels like you're in someone's victorian living room - and the service is fantastic and supre-friendly.

Really a lovely place for a group or a couple- good energy and ambiance, incredibly comfortable seating. Prices are what you'd expect for what you're getting: quality. You feel good going though- the waitress/owner is a really sweet girl and a hard-worker. Great find.
