As a true gym rat, when I moved into Soho in March the first thing I did was look for a gym, after visiting the Equinox on Broadway and the NYSC on Varick, I was told to check out the Printing House on Hudson street. It took about 5 minutes for me to ask "Where do I sign?" and I have been happy ever since.

The environment here is like no other, and trust me I have been a member of several gyms in NYC. This place is the total opposite of the dingy basement weight rooms you find in a typical Juicer Gym, it has a roof-deck Swimming pool like the Herald Square Bally's, a full boxing ring like the Laffayette Crunch, and a tons of friendly members and trainers, not to mention the awesome views of NYC from all floors. There are also full Racquetball courts and an array of state of the art training equipment like TRX cables and kettle bells of every weight.

I train at printing house at minimum 5 days a week, My body has changed in ways I could never have at any other gym and the reason is the staff. On my first free session, one of the trainers gave me the best chest pumping workout I have ever had, it still leaves me sore even though I do the routine weekly. And the Training manager Dariusz is one of the friendliest and smartest Trainers in the game. I have never payed for a full session and still Dariusz constantly give me free workouts, tweaks, routines, and is genuinely concerned for my well-being as far as avoiding any sports injury. As far as the management, Pete the membership advisor has given me free passes for every person I have invited and every person who has trained with me there ended up joining. Thats is as good as a review as any for a gym.

To be frank, I don't know where the negative reviews are coming from, several of my neighbors in my building are also members and love the Printing house, as well as several of my Co-workers who I have introduced to the gym and they have become members. This gym is clean, has new equipment and offers an environment like no other. I been treated very well by the staff and have made several friends among the membership.

Cons: None Whatsoever

I have been a member for the last 6 years. I am coming all the way down from 93rd and Broadway, because this is the BEST by far from all the other. Best newest equipment great atmosphere and views but more important Best trainers, Professional Yoga, Fluidity and Pilates teachers. Not only that the warmest and most welcoming people. I always have out of town guests that LOVE the place.
I can go on and on but Just come and try it.

Like other reviews have said, the general manager and salespeople are really rude. The general manager acts like a bully. As a woman I found this really nasty.

The place isn't that clean and all gray. I'm going to terminate my membership.

Pros: Nice views

Cons: Arrogant and rude managment

.

As other reviewers have stated, the management team is unbelievably rude, arrogant, and condescending.

Having to deal with a slow-moving elevator wastes about 10 minutes of workout time, and the elevator breaks down frequently.

The inadequate lighting on the workout floor encourages accidents. It's not the cleanest gym either.

There are better options for the money and more member-friendly gyms around. Read the other negative reviews.

This health club has the best of everything. All new high-end equipment, professional trainers running classes, and the view! I just joined here a few months ago and it rocks. I cant wait for it to warm up so I can use the rooftop pool with crazy views of NYC. And I'm very excited to take my first squash lesson next week! I better live in this area forever because I cant imagine going to another gym after this one.

I have had memberships in three gyms in NYC and the Printinghouse is the best. It is a great place to exercise as they have three floors of eqipment as well as amazing views of the Hudson River and lower Manhattan. The rooftop pool during the summer months is an excellent place to not only exercise, but socialize as well. The gym attracts nice people.
The instructors are nice and supportive as is the reception staff. Ralph the manager keeps things running and is approachable in listening to suggestions from club members to further improve the club. I love the spin classes and enjoy working out with one of my best friends who I met several years back. We ended up joining as friends and family affording us a further discount as in addition to being a wonderful gym also offers great rates. i always thought of a gym as just a gym, but since I have joined the Printinghouse it has definitely become a way of life. Hope to see you there.

Love this gym. I have tried a few of NYC's gyms but this one just jumped out at me. This gym is by far is the best. The staff is great and super nice. It's a great enviornment to workout in. Its not one of those chain gyms like NYSC or Equinox, it's a completely different feeling. They offer a variety of classes which are all great. They are always adding a new class here and there to change up the routine. The instructors are all great as well as the trainers. The view from the rooftop is fantastic. I love this gym so much that I actuallly commute from Queens on the weekends to the Printing House.

The Printing House Fitness and Squash Club is one of the best kept secrets in the city. Its views, outdoor pool and outdoor rooftop exercise equipment, squash courts, helpful staff, and the lack of crowds and obnoxious music all make it an incredible downtown NYC experience. This is a real gym, where you can unselfconsciously get in shape and escape from the stresses in the city. I left Equinox for it and never looked back.

At first I was pretty hesitant about checking out the gym from what others wrote but I'm glad I did because i fell in love with the place. Staff is friendly and welcoming, amazing layout with views of the entire West Village and it's never crowded. One of the few gym's I've ever belonged to where i actually enjoy going. It's true that the elevator has broken down from time to time but not every two weeks and when it does you have to use the one in the attached apartment building so it's really not a big deal. If you live or work in the West Village I highly recommend this gym, a million times better than NYSC...

I've recently left this gym and found another in the neighborhood, a few blocks away. I wish I'd done it sooner because I was getting wripped off at the Printing House gym hellhole. What threw me off the edge at the Printing House was the elevator kept breaking down--every month at least, if not every two weeks. A member was stuck in the elevator for TWO hours, and all he got was a year of free membership. Also, there was some rule about not turning the lights on during the day. Members were expected to work out in the dark so as to "take advantage of the natural light." But, often, there was not sufficient sunlight. The light idea was a way for whoever is running this hole to cammouflage penny-pinching with concern with the environment. The same way as penny-pinching did not properly fix the elevator. Penny-pinching could also be seen with the moles growing in the bathrooms. Penny-pinching, penny-pinching, penny-pinching ... I think they'll next start charging quarters for every minute for which you use a cardio machine. Penny-pinching... Or maybe they'll market it as environmental that the energy you release while on the cardio machine lights the gym. Penny-pinching ... We go to the gym for relaxation not to inhale some penny-pincher's marketing idea.

Printing House is a unique gym environment. The large open floor plan, absence of music, and sunplashed sky lights create a truly spiritual and calming mood.

The top floors present unique and over-whelming views of the historic West Village, and movie quality images of the mouth of the mighty Hudson and the Statue of Liberty.

A small lap pool is an urban oasis.

People join a gym for one reason: to make themselves feel and look better. Printing House is a unique resource which allows exactly that.

I was hesitant to check out Printing House because of some of the reviews on this site. But, I live around the corner, and I figured that I had to give it a look. Here is what I found:

- A welcoming staff member at the door
- A friendly membership salesman who was very patient in giving the tour and in asking any questions
- Extremely clean, nice equipment
- An array of cardio equipment to choose from
- Obviously fantastic views
- An unpretentious, friendly membership.

Here is what I did not find:

- Crowds
- Waits for equipment

Obviously, everyone has their own experiences. I can honestly say, however, that until this point my experience has been nothing but positive.

I have been to many health clubs in Manhattan and got to say the Printing House is a the best health club I have been to. You have to try it out to believe it yourself. I felt very comfortable with the pleasent staff and the members are friendly as well. The equipment is extremely clean as well as the facility. So if you are looking for the right health club - I would put the Printing House @ the top of your list.

I could not agree more: If it's professionalism you are looking for, this is NOT the place. This mom-and-pap gym needs a make-over extreme. The "management" is incompetent and rude--something I noticed in an initial membership meeting. Imagine, the "manager" lets you know you are too uncool for this place. Excuuuuuse me! Imagine if I'd actually joined and been stuck with this "manager." Based on these reviews, I do not foresee this place staying in business that much longer; maybe it'll have gone under before a yearly membership is over. When I visited, it was a ghost town, awfully empty. I decided to check it out because they have been paying for advertising all over local papers, but once I stepped inside, I knew why. Don't even bother checking it out. It'll soon be an au revoir, cherie!
FYI--there's a New York Sports Club one block from this "manager"-mandated place.

Take my word for it, if you want a professional run business, please run to another gym. I am not a competitor, just a former member who had an equally difficult time with this staff. I am a woman and wish I could write more about the behaviors and quality of experience here, let alone with the managers. A change in management and trainers might save the reputation of this place. Don't take my word for it, ask some females. You are a bother to them, they have small time degrees and experience and cannot cater to this west village crowd. Rejected.

The manager and staff is extremely uncooperative and rude. I went in to join the gym but I was bullied by the manager who was extremely rude towards me and would not even let me finish my sentences eventhough I was polite at all times. I would never join this gym, who would pay money to get insulted?

I went to the Printing House to join the gym, and I was going to, if the "manager" entering the room had not been surprisingly rude and agressive. Although I was very polite throughout the entire time, he seemed rather unstable and immediately suggested: "perhaps this gym is not for you!" I didn't expect so much insult and agression in a process as simple as joining a gym. I ended up joining another gym around the corner instead. I don't advise it to anyone to even walk in here.

yes it might be crowded during peak hours HOWEVER the gym is wonderful, no music, no smell, great machines, wonderous classes, best yoga, good squash courts, suitable trainers. absolutely no complaints. was a member for 2 yrs. (then i moved and it wasnt a convinient gym).

Came there to actually join the gym, as my friend is a member and wanted me to attend with her.
They did not honor my free pass that my friend had for me, I ended up paying $25.00 for the class.
The membership advisor - Peter definitely brings a bad reputation for the Club.
THere are much better clubs in the CITY!!!

I think Cilla is a whiner...everytime I have been to the Printing House I have been able to access to everything I've needed and never known the staff to be rude.
Of course it's going to be crowded on a Monday night at 6.30pm, but not like the NYSC, just a little busier than usual.
There is also an awesome new class called Fluidity, be careful thought Cilla, it's hard and you might just come out sweating!

I've been a member at many gyms so I do have some perspective. What I look for in a gym, is cleanliness, politeness, open access to machines without having to wait, nice locker rooms and management that listens. The staff here is ridiculous. I asked for a locker and was told that a favor was being done for me so I should be patient and continue to wait the 3 weeks I had already waited. There was no computer log, just someone who had no idea what was available. The trainers are weird - see other reviews. The front desk staff, in particular the lady at the front desk - oh so typical in ny establishments- (where they are nice to men mostly or older unnattractive women) is downright rude to young attractive women - even when she ignores them its with attitude. I've seen this happen on more than one occasion including to myself. A plus is the system you swipe in with which minimizes any contact you might have to have with her. If any of you in "customer service" are reading this you should really check this girl - she's ruining your rep. Otherwise, there are usually waits for treadmills unless you don't have a job and a rather odd array of people with luggages. There is a dank smell throughout. The cleaners try their best and the locker rooms are in pretty good shape. If you are expecting this to be empty (as opposed to an Equinox) your too late. As a serious side note, I took one Yoga class (ashtanga) the teacher yanked my arms back and I suffered an injury - he was really rough and totally unqualified - be careful and never let anyone push you into a yoga position you aren't comfortable with.

Cons: the astanga yoga teacher yanked my shoulders back and I was in pain for weeks

I have been a member for 9 years and couldn't be happier. The facilities are fantastic, the trainers are top notch, and the roof deck and pool are a must for the summer. The equipment is constantly being upgraded, the curriculum is current and the gym is extremely clean. The boxing program is fantastic, whether it's your first time or you have been training for a few years, you will feel comfortable and get a great workout with knowledgeable boxing instructors. There is very calm feel to this gym, unlike New York Sports Club where the infamous trainers think it's okay to hit on the members. The gym is only slightly crowded on Mondays and Tuesdays between 5:30pm and 7:30pm and usually only after Jan. 1 and before summer starts. Don't forget about the amazing views from all sides of the gym!

I have been a member for over 18 years and have found the club to be consistently excellent over all that time. They are always upgrading the facilities and programs and now serve a wide variety of disciplines including personal traing, boxing, world class squash facilities & pros and a group fitness program that featurea an extensive selection of classes including Pilates, Spinning, Step, Yoga, strength and conditioning with the best instructors anywhere in the city. It is kept immaculate by a dedicated and competent staff and has a manager who is there, approachable and responsive to members interests and suggestions. And yes, the rooftop views are indeed awesome.

I love this gym! It has a certain relaxing unpretentious vibe that I really like. I've been going about a year, and most of the staff knows my name already. I work with a trainer once a week, and a boxer occassionally, and they kick my ass in a good sort of way! I find the equipment to be perfectly acceptable, and you really can't beat the stunning views, especially at sunset.

Pros: Trainers, Views, Location

Cons: Elevator

The equipment is adequate. Some of the staff is good, but I find most of the trainers on the floor to be a little bizarre. I used to love to spin, but the spin room is bad, the acoustics make it very difficult to hear the instructors. Even when you could hear them, the instructors were not great.

The best thing about the gym, besides the views, was the lack of crowds. However, they have been selling heavily recently, and it is getting a lot more crowded. It is still not at NYSC or Crunch crowd levels, but it is getting there.

When I first joined in August of 2004, it was never crowded, even during prime time.

I've been a memeber for twelve years. The gym is superbly maintained and being up on the ninth and tenth floors in the West Village means gorgeous views while working out. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful; I see them meeting and upgrading their skills every Thursday afternoon, learning new execises or deepening their anatomical knowledge. And the membership is a very pleasant downtown demographic. Even at peak times the gym is not overcrowded.

I learned to play squash there. The pros (FOUR!) are great and these are the best Anderson courts in the city. The new courts were built a little more than a year ago, and I am now too spoiled to play on anything other than beautiful cushioned floors and all glass back walls.

I can't recommend this place highly enough!
