This place is like no other in the area.
Great comfortable place always busy and easily the best food option in the area.
We had a blast waiting for a table and met new people outside while waiting to be seated.

The only bad thing about this place is that during peak times there is a long wait to be seated. The food is that great! This country kitchen serves the most delicious food..great spinach artichoke dip, a spectacular chicken meatball

This is definitely one of my favorite brunch spots. It's literally right next to my house, so I carefully observe the massive line that begins to form every Sunday morning at 10am.

If you want a neighborhood place where the food is good then go to Penelope's. I am from out of town and go to New York once a year. This past weekend will be the 4th year we've had breakfast at Penelope's ... its a must on our trip. I've only been there for breakfast and there is a long wait..but come on guys, its breakfast! Get up earlier and if you're there by 9:30am a table for 4 took 20 minutes. Totally worth it for the papaya/strawberry and coconut waffles...yummmmm

I arrived at Penelope to meet some friends recently, only to be told i had to wait outside the cafe 'until my party arrived'. No problem if the place is full, but it was off-peak and i counted least four available tables.

The arrogance of such a small business eludes me - so 'small town' so mean-spirited. I felt humiliated and silly. Never, never again.

When I went to pick my grandmother up from work she took me to Penelope's for a late lunch. It was very crowded for a Tuesday afternoon, but after eating their Joey & Jackson Chicken Pot Pie - I completely understood why!

Penelope is our neighborhood favorite dining spot. The food is always delicious and the service friendly. Their menu changes by the season, but they've always got their amazing chicken meatball. Their brunch is also a must - definitely worth the wait!
I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant looking for a casual, low-key place to dine.

My wife and I usually go to Penelope's for breakfast, and we always enjoy our meal. Several times we have brought out of town guest, and they have also enjoyed the spot. Even after a year, one out of towners still comments on how much they liked Penelope's. I am bringing my mom and dad there today, as I know my mom will love the atmosphere, and my dad will love the food.

I went there with 2 other African American woman. The waitress brought out food and never came back. The waitor who was apparently covering for her was rude and ignored us. We had to ask the busboy to get him for our check. When he did come around, he referred to us as "girls." When he came with the check he through it on the table. To add to insult, we decided the service did not merit a tip and left. He followed us outside and asked why the waitress he was covering did not get a tip, if there was a problem with the service???? I emphatically responded, "YES, it was horrible."

Heard good thing about the brunch, but wanted to skip the lines, so decided to try it out for dinner. Was not disappointed. We ordered the fish and chips - very fresh - and the chicken meatballs. Doesn't sound very good, but was very delicious. Their hand-cut fries are good, too, so don't order them if you're on a diet! The ambience was very west village-ish: dim, loud atmosphere and casual waiters (and service). Very low key, but good food.

It is by far one of the best places to eat Brunch. Yes, the wait is long, but it is all worth it. The food is great, my favorite: The waffles, and also the fresh OJ.

You must go, it's addictive.

Looking for a brunch spot? Hungover? Too lazy to leave the house? This place has it all. Been here a few times, mainly New Years Day's over the past few years. The brunch menu is unbeatable.

Tasty, cheap, and a lot of meat. I ordered the chicken meat ball and it was perfect, --the portions are very generous here; so, come prepared to eat! All I can really say is the food here makes you full and happy. Downside to this place is the parking, although the later you come, the better, and service is great all the time.

Upon a recommendation from close friends, I skipped work today and took a stroll up 3rd Avenue to 30th and Lexington. I have mentioned downtown campiness before and this eatery had a couple suspects, but for the most part I loved the crowd, wait staff and especially the food. After a short debate on the influence of their decor (French country or English cottage) we decided to f**k it and enjoy the meal with nice conversation. When entering Penelope there is a baked goods section directly in front of you. Apparently the carrot and red velvet cake is delicious.

We decided to forgo the treats though and jump right into our meal. First off we ordered what was definitely the best spinach artichoke dip I have ever had (came with assorted homemade breads). I thought this dish only existed in the realm of frozen foods and chain restaurants so I was somewhat skeptical but in the end I was eating off the spoon. I washed the dip down with an Arnold Palmer as my main course was just arriving. A classic lobster roll piled atop a fresh baked brioche and a side of homemade fries. It was a little heavy after the dip, but delicious nonetheless.

My date opted for the "really really good" (her words) chicken meatballs accompanied by a lemony dressing and an arugula salad. The way the menu read you would be hard pressed to find something you would not like. I cannot explain how enjoyable this meal was, you simply have to see for yourself. We ate at around 4 o'clock but I have heard the brunch is amazing/the best. Fair warning there is known to be a wait during lunch when the mid town power hour is in effect, but we had no problem. Lastly, probably some of the best service I have had in a while. I absolutely loved everything about this place so please don't take anyone who will annoy me.

Been there two times for breakfast. The food is average, but not worth the bill. The menu is extremely over priced, and you do not get what you paid for (small portions and french fries instead of home-fries). The staff isn't very friendly and seams to busy to deal with you. It takes a long time (45 minutes) to get a table and the food is not worth the wait. I don't think you would be able to tell the difference between diner food and this place. On a positive note, the place is clean and has a trendy feel to it. In my opinion, I think Penelope's is the flavor of the month and it's more hype than anything. Definitely, don't waste your Saturday morning waiting for a table at this place. Not worth it.

Four members of Meetup's Thrifty Gourmets group joined me in field-testing this restaurant this past Tuesday.

I don't understand why this eatery has been praised so highly. Its staff would not accept a reservation and the host would not seat us until our entire party had assembled. As a result, we waited almost half an hour for a small table in a cramped, but attractive, space. Penelope's policies related to reservations and seating may be intended to drive traffic to its bar. Several members of our party reported that their drinks there were expensive.

A fellow member and I decided to share the hummus as an appetizer. We agreed that it was bland and unexceptional...no better than that available from Tribe in a nearby Food Emporium. The pita and breads accompanying this dish were also not memorable.

I ordered the burger for dinner, asking that it be prepared medium rare, closer to rare. It arrived with a hint of rareness, was dry rather than juicy, and the meat tasted somewhat like liver. It was topped with an excessive amount of goat cheese, making me think that the chef wanted to hide something about the dish.

Penelope's packed tables testify to something. I'm not sure what, but I don't think it's the quality of its food.

I tried to go there 3 times on sunday for a brunch, but it was crowed all the time. Finally I've been there for a breakfast on friday. We didn't have to wait. The breakfast was yummy, simple but innovative. Ths staff is really friendly, they asked if we needed sth quite often but it wasn't too much.
I recommend this place. But if you wanna for for a brunch, better to go there before 11am!

Went to Penelope last Friday night with friend of mine. We didn't have to wait at all and the food was fabulous! The spinach artichoke dip was fantastic and the mac n cheese was the best I've ever had. It was the perfect meal after a wet, cold day in NYC.

After reading the wonderful reviews we decided to go over for brunch on a Sunday, we found the food to be woefully below par..... you are better off going to a diner. The Farmers Omlette was extremely plain and came without any toast while, the Nutella French Toast was downright poor...... the bread that was used was inappropriate for French Toast. There are far better places in NYC for brunch than this Penelope.

I found this place while walking to work one day - its very quaint with fresh, tasty, innovative and affordable meals. Where else can you get a lunch and drink in NYC served to you and pay $15, including tip (excluding the lobster roll, of course)? I've only tried a couple of the salads so far, but they have all been delicious and very flavorful. I plan on going back and working my way through the entire menu! I brought friends visiting from LA and they adored the place as well. If you can get there for a late afternoon lunch (2 pm, M-F) you wont wait for a table. Be aware, they accept cash only.

I was really disappointed by this place. Judging from the terrific reviews here and the long lines outside, it seemed like a prime brunch spot. Unfortunately the food is no more than good diner quality, which is fine if you're actually at a diner, but is certainly not worth the wait or the price that you get here. Try someplace else.

Sunday PM. This was just what we needed on this freezing cold night after walking to 2 other places with 1+ hour waits!! We remembered seeing Penelope's sidewalk sign on our last visit and decided to check it out, best decision this trip. Sooooo cute inside you wish it had a B & B attached. We ordered the Burgers even though most of the menu is on the vegee-organtic side. It was 2 inches thick, lean, cooked perfectly, juicy and tasted very fresh. They offer many cheese choices, we had the cheddar that was nice & sharp!! It's served on a thin english muffin(good idea-not too much bread) w/ onion, tomato, lettuce & a side of homemade FF's. We started with beaf stew(soup) and I had to try the Mac & Cheese which is enough for us 3 to share, creamy BUT could be a little more chedar cheesey. The Ice Tea was PERFECT!! w/ raw sugar cubes(nice touch). We finished w/ Hot teas & Great tasting double expresso(kind of small), moist choc. cupcake w/ vanilla icing & a "Magic Bar". Try this place to find out why it's "Magic". I saved 1/2 for later, OK tomorrow, too full tonight!! But I'll be back next time we're in town!! ALMOST FORGOT... PLAYS NICE HIP MUSIC, LOUDER AFTER 9PM.

I live in the neighborhood and eat in/take out weekly. More and more often lately I have been served stale, or sloppily prepared food that just isn't up to par with Penelope's previous consistently good food. Worse yet, I've been met with a complacent attitude from the staff when these lapses are brought to their attention.

If the line is short or you don't mind waiting, this is definitely the best place for brunch in the neighborhood. Went again this past weekend and it was delicious. My friend had pumpkin waffles which looked super yummy. Luckily it was raining so there was no wait but that was the first time that has ever happened. Generally there is a killer line.

I was a little doubtful about Penelope because I thought the price was a little steep for sandwiches. But what a sandwich! I got the Avocado/Hummus sandwich and it was really great. The ingredients were fresh and not skimpy, and it came with a side of salad with dressing which was tart and sweet.
It's a pretty small, cozy room and the staff is attentive. They had a small bar which wasn't loud. And a fresh dessert menu.
I will definitely go back to try the other selections.

i came here with two of my friends on wednesday night. the place is pretty low-key & has a neighbourhood feel to it. its also dimly lit, and we had to rely on the sole candle at the table to read our menus. our server was really friendly and nice.

i ordered the mac & cheese, one of my friends ordered the nice chicken meatball sandwich, and my other friend ordered the curried chicken salad. each item was around $10. the food arrived quickly. i was pleased to find that their portions are huge. my dish of bubbly hot mac came with a side of greens drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette & scattered with dried cranberries. the mac and cheese came with a breaded top and a big slice of tomato baked right in. it was pretty satisfying, but i found the mac pretty watery (or milky) and not tasting sharp enough. i wasnt able to finish it because i was busy eating half of my friends sandwich. it consisted of thinly sliced spicy chicken meatball (almost like sausage, really), covered with tomato sauce & cheese, on toasted french bread. it was really good. the pile of fries that came with the sandwich were also amazing thick-cut, hot on the outside & mealy on the inside. the curried chicken salad was good too a huge pile of chicken in a sweet curry dressing served on a bed of greens.

we were stuffed after our entrees, but couldnt resist ordering desserts since penelope is famous for its baked goods. we split the carrot cake & the pie of the day (happened to be raspberry peach). the carrot cake was really good dense cake that was not too sweet and topped with a layer of lemon icing. the pie was pretty good despite being served cold the crust was flaky and the filling tart.

overall, i had a really good time. will definitely be coming back!

i ordered the mac & cheese, one of my friends ordered the nice chicken meatball sandwich, and my other friend ordered the curried chicken salad. each item was around $10. the food arrived quickly. i was pleased to find that their portions are huge. my dish of bubbly hot mac came with a side of greens drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette & scattered with dried cranberries. the mac and cheese came with a breaded top and a big slice of tomato baked right in. it was pretty satisfying, but i found the mac pretty watery (or milky) and not tasting sharp enough. i wasnt able to finish it because i was busy eating half of my friends sandwich. it consisted of thinly sliced spicy chicken meatball (almost like sausage, really), covered with tomato sauce & cheese, on toasted french bread. it was really good. the pile of fries that came with the sandwich were also amazing thick-cut, hot on the outside & mealy on the inside. the curried chicken salad was good too a huge pile of chicken in a sweet curry dressing served on a bed of greens.

we were stuffed after our entrees, but couldnt resist ordering desserts since penelope is famous for its baked goods. we split the carrot cake & the pie of the day (happened to be raspberry peach). the carrot cake was really good dense cake that was not too sweet and topped with a layer of lemon icing. the pie was pretty good despite being served cold the crust was flaky and the filling tart.

overall, i had a really good time. will definitely be coming back!

Pros: tasty food, carrot cake, service

Cons: mac & cheese not sharp enough

this place is adorable. the food is all homemade and hearty, brunch/breakfast/lunch/dinner - all are superb. the new england decor and ambience is so refreshing in the middle of the city and the staff are charming.
so you may have to wait a few minutes to be seated during peak times, but it's well worth it and the staff will bring you a drink etc. if you really can't wait - ask to sit at the bar to eat, same menu and it's just as good!
oh - and don't leave without the homemade cupcakes! i recommended it to some outoftowners who were in the city... they went back every morning. can't say enough about it, i only wish i lived nearer!

came to this place with a bunch of my friends. the wait was forever long! good thing they serve coffee while we waited.

the brunch menu seems reasonable. your typical brunch food. cute people everywhere. from the waiters to the customers. young crowd, but not crazy.

waitstaff are so nice. one of them came over and apologized for the wait. it's not like it was her fault or anything. so she hooked us up with a side order of fries.

i'm ready to try this place out for dinner one night.

definately cute and popular, but the food is terrible. the cooks lack complete any understanding of how to prepare food. i haven't had the mac/cheese, but if that's what people here rave about, and if that's your thing, then maybe you should go. who puts cold cheese, cold ham, and untoasted/cold bread with cooked eggs to make a breakfast sandwich? to be fair, bakery stuff was fairly good.

We found Penelope after doing an internet search. We'd gone to the Christmas Show and wanted to find somewhere less touristy and hopefully less crowded. Definitely less touristy..but mobbed. We thought everything was delicious. It's a funky little place...LOTS of young adults there. Great service...intersting menu...we will definitely go back!

I took a group of 10 women here on a sunday evening, and since they don't take reservations I called them day of to warn them. We hung out at the bar while we waited for the group o arrive and then were seated immediately. They were prompt in taking our order and all the food arrived at once! Everyone was happy with their meal, and the price is great for the portion sizes. One of the girls got some water dumped on her, but the waiter was incredibly apologetic and more than made up for it by comping her meal. I go to lots of group dinners and this was by far one of the smoothest. I will definitely take my husband here for the vegetarian options, although then I won't be able to flirt with the super cute bartender and waiters...

This is a great casual place on Lex. It has a southern charm feel but in the city. The food is wonderful...but the thing I am most impressed about is the service. We went for brunch with friends and had to wait and when they came for us that thanked us for waiting, then my friend wanted to order the BBLT which was not on the brunch menu. The waiter was able to make it happen. The BBLT is excellent as well as the mac and cheese. I don't think the locals want to let the tourist know about this gem.

This was, without a doubt one of the best dining experiences I've had in years. The menu was extensive and creative, the food was well prepared and delicious. My girlfriend and I shared the macaroni and cheese, a salad, an artichoke-spinach dip, and a chicken meatball sandwich. With every bite we were mesmerized by how delicious and unique the food was. The dip was the best I've ever had, the mac&cheese made me feel like I was down south at a world famous soul-food restaurant, the salad was perfect, and the sandwich tasted just like a beef meatball wedge. They had numerous creative and delcious wines and even allowed you to get a half a bottle, and if you got a full bottle, they allow you to take it home!
The decor was cute and comfortable and relaxing.
The service was quick and very friendly
EXCELLENT!

This is a great place for brunch. It feels like a homey breakfast place you'd visit while at the beach. The nutella french toast was decadent. There was a wait but they kept things moving.

I've been living in New York for about three years now and let me tell you, it's great to find a place like Penelope where I can escape for a while. The decor is calming, the food is comforting, and, given the opportunity, their staff eagerly remembers a repeat customer... and sometimes even how you like your burger done up! I discovered the place about a year and a half ago and have gone in probably at least twice a week since. The prices, thankfully, match the feeling that you're in a small New England cafe (low enough to allow you to come back again and again). I've only been in a few times for brunch as it does get quite busy, it's worth it though especially now that they have those amazing Blueberry Waffles... and that "blonde kid" waiting to take your name at the door.

This is a great place to grab a light dinner. The sandwiches and salads are delicious. I'm told the desserts are as well but I haven't had the opportunity to try them yet! The service leaves a little to be desired, but the ambiance and food surely make up for it! And it's cheap, too.

Encouraged by the long weekend lines and streetside chalkboard menu featuring Nutella french toast, we had been looking forward to bruch at Penelope. This morning we finally made it over to discover that the best part of the experience was the anticipation of good food. The reality was that we each paid $11 for some of the most mediocre breakfast food I've ever had the displeasure of eating. My poached egg with ham and fontina was one piece of tasteless sourdough bread, two eggs "poached" to death such that they were hard boiled, draped with one piece of cold deli ham. When I pointed out that poached eggs are not typically cooked solid, my waitress offered "oh, we make 'em like that, so next time request them runny." We left feeling sorry for those in the long line outside - crowded and looks promising, but skip this one.

I went there the first time because someone told me the food was great and inexpencive. I keep going back because I agree with them.

My girlfriend and I continually come back to this charming little restaurant. An associate of ours (who happens to be a waiter) bragged so much that we came, we saw, we ate... and we became repeat clients. ;-)

Great place for two... or even a group. We frequently have dinners with friends here.

Favorite dishes? All of their salads and their mac and cheese. Fav Desserts? ALL OF THEM!

This place is super cute and the waitstaff give off a very relaxed comfortable vibe. Nice little menu. I've tried most of the menu and really like the food. The mac&cheese is good, and the green apple sandwich is tasty.

I went with a friend. The decor reminded of that really annoy aunt that lives in the midwest. We went at night when the place had candles on every table that were brighter than the bulbs over head. I sat facing my friend and he sat against the blue wall. All this and wine cut down on the decor. The food was really great and cheap. It seems like a haven for single men with books. You are allowed to seat yourself and one of the single men sat next to us. I didn't mind as he wasn't intrusive in the least sense. More so, it reminded me of eating out in europe or maybe in a smalltown dinner. The waiter changed half way through our meal and the service took a sharp turn to the worst when this happened.
