My friend and I both walked in for an interview for massage therapy position here. She has years more experience than I and is incredibly talented. The only difference is she is black and I am from Russia. When they turned her away and hired me, I was shocked. Of course I did not take the job, but I think businesses like this should be made public about their discriminatory hiring practices.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

I find it funny that the review below is written by a "professional," writer yet she can't manage to properly spell all the words she uses in her rant. The one titled "Horrible" as well--this format even offers spellcheck, perhaps a professional psychiatrist would be able to identify the connection between one's anger, with the inability to write a cohesive sentence. In any case, I found it interesting, and also wanted to say here that I am a regular client of Sava Spa. It's my home-away-from-home, my sanctuary, it's where I go to be made beautiful and to talk with Joanna, Galina and Marta, all the women who were put down in the first two reviews, and for the life of me, I cannot understand why.

For a man, having his eyebrows and lashes tinted could be a harrowing experience. But not so at Sava Spa. Joanna and her staff are the most friendly and professional people. Any guy wanting to put his lashes in the hands of a beautician does not want to come out looking like Ivana Trump. So let me say Sava Spa is the place to go if you want a terrific cappuccino, personal attention, great surroundings and eyebrows and lashes looking like they did twenty years ago.

I was shocked to read a critical review of Sava Spa. Every experience for me and my husband is always nothing less than perfect in every way. The incredibly talented Joanna and her fantastic staff offer exquisite treatments, personalized service and make each and every client feel special. We wholeheartedly recommend Sava Spa to anyone who is seeking a tranquil, soothing experience using the latest skin treatments that produce glowing results. Where else could you find such a high caliber spa above 59th street, and is it any wonder why the spa is frequented by major stage and screen stars? Hurray for Sava Spa!

My first visit there was my last one. The customer service was horrible. The front desk lady there named Galina could not speak English properly and was dressed like inappropriately. The owner Joanna had bad breath and on top of that I had to wait 20 minutes for my facial that was poorly done by a girl named Martha. They were all speaking polish among themselves which I found profoundly rude. To top it all, the bill was outrageous for a terrible service. Take my advise and never, ever lay your foot at sava spa.

I was shocked by the two reviews posted on 5/29. They have been clearly written by a person with lots of personal issues, looking to take them out on someone else.
I have been Joanna?s customer for 15 years and received nothing but royal treatment. The service is absolutely impeccable. The pedicure lasts for months and always gets me complements. More importantly, after every visit to Sava Spa, I feel beautiful, younger and energized. Joanna always knows how to improve my mood and how to motivate me. Unlike most people in this industry, Joanna is authentic. She doesn?t have to make an effort in order to please her customers. She simply enjoys her work and enjoys people (in all their shapes and forms). She is truly interested in people?s lives and able to engage in a meaningful conversation rather than small talk. I haven?t had much experience with other employees of Sava Spa but I know that Joanna selects them with great care and makes sure they remain motivated.
So, please go and check out Sava Spa for yourself and I guarantee you will want to come back!!!

In the months leading up to our wedding my fiance (now wife) encouraged (forced, dragged, ordered) me to go to Sava Spa. I was scheduled to receive a cleansing facial treatment. As a corn fed mid-western male I must admit I was not all that thrilled at the prospect of going to a spa for a facial, but I acquiesced. By the end of that first visit the owner, Joanna, and her staff had completely won me over. My facial was relaxing, cleansing and performed with enough vigor to let me know I was getting my money's worth. My time was made even more enjoyable by the pleasant conversation peppered throughout my treatment. The warm compresses she applied were heavenly and before she had even finished I was already reviewing my calendar in my head so I could schedule my next visit. In addition to the treatment I also appreciated the cozy upscale space they had created. It was small enough that I didn't feel like just another person in an assembly line of customers and the soft music and ambiance really added to the experience. I couldn't imagine a more enjoyable or effective way to relax and get my skin ready for all those wedding photos at the same time!

Where do I begin? When I first arrived at Sava, I was a spa-virgin. I hated the stuck-up, elitist atmosphere of other spas...so I stayed away. Then, one day I just happened to walk into Sava's door and all of that changed. Joanna (the spa's owner) and her girls greet me as if I'm home from a long trip everytime (and I've been back many times, believe me). They pamper me. They fawn over me--but in a way that's more like a group of girlfriends concerned for their friend's well-being. At Sava, I am not a business transaction. And Joanna is simply the most wonderful, warm and truly kind person in this big city. Her entire bubbly personality fills the place with an instant energy. Sava spa is, to me, a home away from home. And I'm so glad I found it.

Pros: Amazing owner, kind staff, excellent services

Cons: It's a hike to Inwood, but well worth it

I have been a client of Sava spa for the past five years and have enjoyed all the services that they offer.
I am especially impressed with their leg waxing . When I made an appointment for a full leg wax, they recommended that I only wax my lower leg wax because my upper leg was not very hairy. I really appreciated the honesty. In addition, whenever I walk in to make an appointment , the lovely woman at the desk offers me a seat in one of the comfortable chairs and a delicious cappuccino. what better service can one ask for!!!

Sounds like someone has a personal axe to grind or why waste so much time & energy vilifying Sava & its staff? An angry FIRED ex-employee, perhaps? Certainly no customer walks in with a gun to her/his head. I've been going there for years - paid so much more elsewhere - but Sava is incomparable in quality of service. Current employees are consummate professionals who would never bad-mouth one customer to another. The ambience is relaxing, warm, and friendly - an oasis in the Big Apple.

Today I had the most fun I've ever had getting a pedicure!!! I have been going to the Sava Spa since it opened, and for me it's a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of life in the big city. In the beautiful quiet of this charming spa I met and chatted with one of Joanna's clients, and the delightful, always interesting Joanna herself. I didn't want to leave. The conversation was intelligent and inspiring. Everyone seems to be happy there. The clientele is as delightful as the staff and the experience as a whole is positive. Never mind the fabulous pedicure which had lasted for 5 weeks. Delicious cappuccino intermingled with friendly neighbors who just stop by to say hello reminded me what a needed addition this was to the neighborhood. The is always welcoming and I am looking forward to my next appointment. A gem in Washington Heights. Check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Staff, environment, treatment

Cons: Can be pricey, but who doesn't have to pay rent?

I spent several wonderful hours at Sava Spa. Modern and clean design, yet very comfortable and calming. Extremely talented and friendly staff ( best manicure, best pedicure, artful eyebrow shaping, fantastic facial and a fabulous collection of casual, yet chic clothes. The materials feel so good, I left the spa wearing the new clothes. Luckily I bought several pieces, so when it is time to change, there is another great piece to slip into.
Joanna the owner is just lovely. She is top quality and delivers top quality! So does her friendly staff.
It is a shame that some ONE STAR reviewers ( although if you look closely and pay attention to writing style and same misspelled words, you realize it is one and the same person writing these reviews) abuse this site.
Sava Spa is a high carat diamond and a shining star!
I have been to Sava Spa now several times and the service has been consitently superb. I am looking forward to many more visits.

I was shocked when I read those negative and poorly written reviews of Sava Spa. I have been a client of the spa from the day it opened and I have had nothing but superior service from all the staff there.
I have had about 35 pedicures there and they have all lasted for an impressive length of time. Although I do have a very tight budget I find the service worthwhile and clean! I find that the owner is an extremely intelligent and informative woman. While I was having one of my first facials, she noticed I had a certain skin condtion. I went to a top dermatologist a week later-and sure enough she was right!

Truly wonderful? Best Kept Secret? Simply Wonderful? my skin has never looked better? Wow. The owner must have spent quite some time writing these reviews.

Disclosure: I went once. And I?ve had enough. My esthetician was very nice, but the bill almost gave me a heart attack. My facial was ok, nothing special. My pedicure?a flake of varnish chipped off the next day and it was all ruined.

But that?s not the real issue I have with sava spa. You ready?
I actually know a person who worked there while in college and learned some behind-the-scene facts. Like that the owner is talking s*** about her (even old) costumers. She calls them names which I will not disclose here but one starts with a B and has a ?stupid rich? in front; and jokes about their being fat. Yup. It?s true ladies. Thought you should know. I?m plump myself and that made me see in red.
In fact, this place is a huge scam. The atmosphere among the employees is horrible? behind the scenes it?s like a jungle during a full moon. The owner is abusing her employees and will do everything to make the costumers (especially those poor ladies after 40) to buy a bunch of products they don?t need at all; only to laugh at their stupidity right after they?re gone.

I wish I could give a zero-star rating to this place. I agree with the other reviewer since something similar happened to me.
I was held for 30 minutes before my treatment, and there was no renovation at that time ;/.

As for the owner, I wouldn't mind her, but I noticed how awfully mean she was to one of the girls working there. She didn't even hide it, but scorned the girl in front of other costumers. I don't expect a woman who was doing pedis all her life and barely speaks broken English to be exceptionally cultured, but that woman is horrid. I wouldn't pay her again if that was the last spa in the country.

Also, once their closing time was coming (but it was still 25 minutes to the scheduled closing time) and this depressing-looking long haired zombie girl started mopping the floor around me. I don't think she spoke any English at all, since she completely ignored me when I asked her not smear my new shoes with that dirty mop. ugh.

I can see why the other review is enthusiastic, since I've been at Sava Spa several times and I noticed that costumers that are friends with the owner or live in her building are treated way better. For us, average mortals, it's attitude, overcharges and waiting lines.

I don't see what the whole excitement about this place is about. I'm in the fashion industry and I know a lot about treatments since I deal with models and their looks a lot. Sava is not doing anything wrong in that part, but it's simply and absolutely AVERAGE. And the prices are hyper-ridiculous. NOT WORTH IT PEOPLE!

I do not usually leave reviews on websites such as these, but I am a disappointed customer of Sava Spa and would like to speak out after the NY Times piece that was so glowing. I was a repeat customer of Sava spa until I had a negative experience last month. I had set up a massage appointment almost a month ahead of time. I was called 15 minutes before my appointment to "confirm", which I thought was odd. When I got there, I was kept waiting for almost 30 minutes. I was not told why or what was going on. Since I was on a schedule I asked that my massage get turned into 30 minutes instead of an hour. I heard the manager of Sava Spa tell my massage therapist that I should get charged for an hour. Once in the room (finally) I was told by my massage therapist that there were not enough rooms for all of the appointments in the book, since Sava Spa was in the middle of renovations. He himself was upset and distracted since his room for his appointment was taken by someone else, and also upset since this was not the first time this happened to him. The 30 minutes I had with him, although he is good at what he does, was rushed and I spent the whole time feeling tense. If it was not for him speaking up for me, and handling the charges, Sava Spa would have tried to bill me for the whole hour, even though they had knowingly overbooked themselves without ever telling me. I felt extremely uncomfortable, my time and money was wasted - for what they are charging I will never go there again. There is no excuse for that kind of poor customer service in a place that supposedly prides itself on personal attention and privacy.

Joanna, and her welcoming staff , are AMAZING. I have been going for brows and facials for 1 year now, and wholeheartedly feel that I've finally found the perfect blend of warmth and professionalism. Joanna is full of knowledge about skin care, and will to share her thoughts on all aspects of it, including nutrition--just ask! My skin has always been the envy of friends and strangers, but last year I experienced a break-out, and thought--"Oh no! This is the end of all these glory years!" But between just two facials, and some new skin care products that she suggested, Joanna has completely restored my skin (I am nearing 40, but people still guess that I am 28 or 29!). Her brows and other waxing are also wonderful. My brows have never looked better, and I just got my first bikini wax as well. Cannot say enough about Joanna's fantastic, professional care, her beautiful, serene salon, and her sincerity and kindness. Try it and you will see!

Pros: Amazing, seriously professional care; easy A-train access; unpretentious; welcoming

Cons: Some may say expensive, but it is top-level care and worth it; not super fancy, if that is important to you. But absolutely lovely none-the-less.

THINK TWICE BEFORE GOING TO THIS SPA!!

After reading about Sava Spa on several sites, I decided to give this spa a visit for a badly-needed massage.

I was surprised to find the tiny "waiting area" (2 chairs, by the door), and the staff handed me some water and left me to wait, not bothering to check in on me until about 25 mins later when I was STILL waiting. (I had followed proper spa etiquette and showed up about 10 mins early) and even about 20 mins after my appt was supposed to start, I was STILL waiting, with no word from the staff as to when I would be seen.

Then, about 10 minutes after THAT a male staff member (OLD man) came out, walked past me twice without saying a word, and then the third time around, finally said he would be with me in a minute.

To my surprise, he was the one who would be giving the massage.

**PROFESSIONAL spas usually tell people AHEAD of time that they only have a man giving massages, because people do have preferences, and some - like me - prefer women. When I made the appointment, the staff member referred to the person who would be giving me a massage as "her."

So, being utterly disgusted with the long wait, lack of attention and professionalism, and not being told beforehand about the man who would be massaging me, I told him that I would not be staying and I told him and all of the attendants exactly why. - He was VERY nasty, CONDESCENDING and RUDE. After his behavior, I will NEVER go there again, and I WILL advise everyone I know NOT TO SPEND THEIR MONEY AT SAVA SPA.

A spa experience should be relaxing and soothing, not an encounter with nasty, snooty, unprofessional people. THE OWNER SHOULD BE ASHAMED.

I kept wondering why all of the reviews of this spa never mention the massages. Now I know.
Sava spa - NEVER again.

Cons: UNPROFESSIONAL. RUDE, ARROGANT MASSSEUR. LONG WAIT.

I have had problems with acne for years, and various medical treatments, including Accutane, have failed to permanently solve my problem. Anyway, I have always found that any decent facial does help my skin, and I have seen various aestheticians in several cities (including at New York's Mario Badescu, which I found to be nowhere near as good as its reputation had lead me to expect). Sava is the first place that has made the experience such a pleasure and so incredibly helpful that I actually look forward to the long trek from Brooklyn (where I live) or midtown (where I work) to Washington Heights -- a trek which I now make regularly, and which is helping me to achieve very good results with my skin. The place is so cute and spotless and everyone is so nice, attentive and welcoming. It's also extremely comfortable, with wonderful suede chairs in the waiting room and these luxurious cashmere blankets you lie under while you have the facial. A hundred bucks for any old facial is on the pricey side, but considering the service you get at Sava it is a bargain. I can highly recommend Marta's facials, but I would be willing to bet that anyone you'd get here would be fantastic. Recommendations for products are spot-on (and, I should add, not pushy at all).

Pros: Best facials, by far, that I have ever had; really cute place and great staff

Cons: A little more expensive than other places

I've been visiting Sava regularly for about two years, and have always had a wonderful experience. Although I've had brow-shaping and waxing as well, the facials, and one recommended product in particular, have transformed my skin, and I regularly receive compliments from patients and others regarding my complexion. I can't thank Barbara enough! It's a wonderful atmosphere, and a delight to have such a service near my neighborhood.

I have been to this spa numerous times for brow shaping, waxing, and mani/pedi treatments both with Joana herself and her lovely crew of talented aestheticians. The experience has always been a pleasure. I was interetsed in having my brows shaped for my wedding and couldn't have been more pleased with the result (plus I got a lot of "who does your eyebrows, they look amazing', which was also nice). I have also been for their Brazilian wax, and they do a wonderful job, use good products, and are extremely hygenic. The result was clean with minimal irritation. And needless to say I've never had a nicer mani/pedi. The spa itself is lovely, very cozy and serene, the staff are ultimate professionals. I highly recommend this spa if you want something done right!

I was visiting the museum and looked up restaurants and spas in the area so that I could treat myself to a day of indulgence. Lets just say I never made it to the museum. I made an appointment for a facial and stayed for a manicure and pedicure. The products are luxurious as is the experience of being at SAVA. They treated me like a million bucks and served me cappucino that was delicious. Joanna is amazing! I've gone back several times once with Myrna and another with Barbara. Each is just great and so if you can't get Joanna the other women are just as wonderful. SAVA is better than lots of the places downtown and the neighborhood, food and museum are worth the trip up where you feel like you are in a small town.

I am new to the area and was looking for a small quaint place where I could get my waxing done. I found this place through citysearch and found that the reviews were right. The staff is great, skillful, and keen on details. Love them. I plan to visit again ... and again... and again.

I have been a client of Joanna's, the owner of the Spa, for five years now. She is a legend in her trade. When she opened her own Spa two years ago I followed her even though it meant a longer commute. Having a personal relationship with my aesthetician is important considering the services that I get on a regular basis. Joanna is a perfectionist and the only person I would consider for my waxings and facials. The only con I can think of is that Joanna is so highly saught after that it can be a tricky getting an appointment with her, but she always fits me in even if it means coming in earlier or staying later than the salon hours call for. She loves what she does and it shows.

A small piece of serenity. This is the next best thing to having an in-home spa. Joanna and her staff are not only professional and skillful at thier craft, but overall very personable and friendly. It is certainly worth the trip whether it's a block a way or a few miles away. Highly recommended.

I have searched all over downtown to find a bikini wax as good as at Sava, but I just keep going all the way back to Washington Heights. Joanna is just too good!

What can I say? The place is fabulous. The treatments phenomenal. And the staff are warm and welcoming (even when my 2 year old is wreaking havoc!). I have recommended Joanna and the ladies of Sava to many many friends -- all of whom have become regulars. It's the best!

Facials, bikini waxing, eyebrow waxing - I've had it all done at Sava, and each treatment was better than the next. The ambiance is beautiful - simple and clean. The products are wonderful - no one tries to sell you anything. And the prices are totally reasonable. No one will ever touch my eyebrows (and other stuff) ever again!
