Bad Service
Bad Food
Too Crowded and Worst Crowd

Someone Vomited in the middle of dance floor. Guess what, it wasn't cleaned for whole night by the Staff. People just kept dancing there. We had to stay as we ordered food prior to this incident.

After requesting a few times to the staff to please take care of this situation, what we get to hear is that we shouldn't try to create problems and just enjoy our dinner or leave.

Pros: None

Cons: No enjoyment for the time you spent there

I have come here earlier and it used to be an all right place. But its no longer the same. Last two times I have been here, it was my worst experience ever in a NYC club or lounge.

I suggest to never go there.

I was recently at Kemia and disliked the experience because of the bouncers/security people. They kept pushing people everytime they went through the crowd without a reason. If they had just used a flashlight or said excuse me, I'm sure people would have made room for them to pass by. Instead they said nothing and literally pushed everyone - spilling drinks and tripping girls in heels. I also don't like that you have to check your coat even if you're wearing a heavy sweater. It's winter, and it's cold!

I only put one star because I had to otherwise it would have gotten MINUS 5 stars. Kemia is the WORST place I have ever been to. Never in my life have I ever been treated with such disrespect. I've worked in the restaurant business and know how clients should be treated so I was appalled by the way the manager treated me.

So Saturday night my friends and I had a surprise get together at Kemia for my husbands birthday. I spoke to Ben the manager on Friday to make a reservation. He said we could have the table from 9:30-11:30 for 10 people.
The first sucky thing about Kemia is when my husband and I were walking in we were stopped by the bouncer who told us we had to check our coats. HAD TO for $2 an item.

So we get in, ok fine, have a hooka, some drinks, and then I get a voicemail from my friend who was meeting us there later. He tells me that the front door wont let him in unless he gets a table with bottle service. He tried to explain he was there for a birthday party which is already going on downstairs at a table. The girl keeps on about her bottle service requirement and tells him he has to wait outside. What?! By the time I got his message and ran upstairs to see where he was he was already gone. I asked the girl at the front what happened and she starts in about some bottle service crap. I had to explain to her 3 times that my friend should have been let in before she understands what I'm talking about.

So I was pissed and wanted to speak to Ben the manager. I asked the bouncer if I could speak to Ben and he said "Why?"......ummm why? because I'm a client and I said so? Unbelievable. Well he never even got him so I asked the waitress to please send Ben over. Ben finally shows up and I tell him the situation and explain that I was really upset that my friend came all the way from Queens just to be turned away for no good reason. He said "So? What do you want me to say?" I said " How about an apology? I have a table in here, we are clients spending money, my friend was supposed to join us and spend more money and you don't even apologize?". So Ben continued to be a complete prick, treated me with no respect whatsoever, and walked away. I was appalled.

So I told my husband who was equally pissed that our friend wasn't let in and the manager just treated me like dirt under his shoe so he wanted to have a word with Ben too. Lets just say it didn't go any better than my conversation. Ben was even more of an a-hole to my husband and they called in 3 huge bouncers who surrounded us like we were going to beat them all up or something. I'm 5'1 and my husband is a tall skinny guy. Not the most threatening looking couple by any means so the bouncers were a bit unnecessary.

Needless to say this place is a dump and they do not have any respect for their clientle. Oh did I mention that when I ran upstairs to look for my friend there was a line outside yet inside the place was mostly empty? Made no sense. I think this place is trying to be a big cool club but really its a little shit hole in a basement with a staff of pretentious a-holes. Trust me do not waste your time here. There are much better hookah bars where you will be treated well and not made to succumb to idiotic rules.

Cons: everything

Kemia is the place to be. Went there Friday night after the parade with 2 of my friends for some hookah and relaxation. When we first arrived there we were told to come through the main entrance around the building. Mind you there is none. Come back to a rude door hostess who seats us and hounds us for orders. We decide to get a hookah which cost us 25 dollars and it was delivered by a waiter who not only hardly spoke any English but was extremely rude while asking us to pay telling us there was no change. Here comes the best part. The hookah didn't work and lasted no more than 10 minutes. After trying to speak to the hostess she directs us to the non English speaking waiter who proceeds to tell us it's our fault. We ask him what our options were and he offered to give us another coal for an additional 5 dollars! No way were we going to pay that. Instead we ask him to clean off the coal already in the hookah and he put his arms up and walks away. Leaving me to clean it off with a straw. So we ca the hostess over again to ask her if we could please speak to some type of manager and she had the odacity to lie to our face and tell us SHE was the manager. And asks us in the most rudest way possible "so what would you like to accomplish from all this?" ontop of it all they ran out of water so they gave us a huge bottle of water that nearly cost 10 dollars. All we wanted was a glass. So we decided to drink the whole thing while being stared at ny the staff in the corner. Before we could finish we were asked by the bouncer to speed it up and to get out because they were expecting people. Not a private party a public one. So we ask for the bill. Seeing as to how the service sucked we decided not to top. Which btw they include and leave a lime for additional tip. We decided not to pay the tip and pay the 12 we owed on water and a soda. My friend left a note on the receipt saying how we gelt about the service. As we walk out and down the street we are chased down by the bouncer who asks us to come back inside. The "manager" or hostess throws the receipt outside telling the bouncer we owe 2.12 and to "handle it" while she snapped her fingers and walked inside. As we asked the bouncer to speak to the REAL manager he radios him in to the litchen where we told them how we didn't feel tip was deserved. The manager said it's fine and told the bouncer to "copy or faces and never let them be seen here again" while the hostess stood there and snapped her fingers telling us never to come back.

Last night we went here wearing our bump its in our hair. We thought this place would be cute and low key. Walked in and could only stay for a quick drink due to hysterical laughter. Crowd: fobby, old, red headed step children that need to learn to dance.

i've been to two bdays here (a friend's and my sister's), and both times it has been no hassles whatsoever. it's posh enough to attract a good crowd (and good ratio), which has been heavy on indians (they do play some bhangra music). since we didn't order at the bar i can't comment on the bartenders, but the mojitos are really good. the dj is pretty hilarious and plays decent music. both times (months apart) he did this little umbrella dance routine on the bar to rihanna's 'umbrella,' which is funny the first time, but was retarded the second time. there are also hookahs there, which are of pretty good quality (and less expensive than, say, le souk). i probably won't frequent this place on a normal weekend night or to pick up girls, but it's a great place if you want to get a group together and not have a pain in the @ss.

Pros: great for groups, posh but not snobby, drinks

Cons: music just okay, the rest of hell's kitchen is pretty boring

If you love arabic music and relatively inexpensive drinks, this is the place. I threw my birthday party here & it was fantastic. There was a belly dancer with a candle lit chandelier on her head and the music was fun. The staff was fun, at one point the waitress even got on the bar to dance, it was super fun. Definately recommend it for people who like arabic music and a nice decor. Will definately go there again.

Worse bartender on Thursday night I have ever encountered. I disputed the price on my bill and she was RUDE and told me that I had bought all the drinks. I signed the check but told her she was the rudest person I have ever met. She served drinks with a sour look on her face all night. She cursed me out. What kind of place allows this behaviour from their workers...??? Unbelievable. Will never go there again.

Had my birthday party here last night and it was really great. I reserved the place about 1.5 weeks ahead of time, confirmed it the day before and got there with everything in order. Our hostess was extremely polite, attentive, non-pushy, and best of all prompt. The resident DJ plays all the tight hip hop, latin, indian, and arabic music. The place got really packed at one point (around 1230/1) and about 4 of my friends (out of about 25/30) couldn't make it in, so just let your crew know to get there before 12, else they could be left out. All the other people had no line drama normally associated at some of the other popular places (bouncer is cool and down to earth) but beware ... don't tick him off (like any bouncer right?). Now I'm just worried writing a raving review will have me waiting in line next time...

This is the 2nd years in a row that I've had my birthday here. The staff is very warm, the music is a mixture of everything dancable, the crowd in mixed and unpretentious and the reasonably priced drinks are delicious, especially the mohitos.

We were planning to celebrate my friend's birthday at this place. Four girls and three guys were already in. I arrived with two of my friends and management would not let us in saying that "there are too many guys in there". In addition they were very rude and inconsiderate. He told me to go to a gay bar if I wanted to be in a place with too many guys. The manager seemed to have forgotten that he is in the United States of America, not in some arabic country where what he did might be acceptable.

For all those who plan to celebrate an event in this place, bring more chicks or you will be out.

Went with my girlfriends last night for a drink and to take advantage of their fairly-priced Happy Hour cocktails. The drinks were tasty and good value, but the server was beyond bad. In the middle of our second round of drinks (we also ordered 4 plates of food) the server, who was a lazy, snotty brat the entire time, informed us that she, "needed our table for a reservation that was running a half an hour late". First of all, the place was full of other people who were also drinking and eating and it seemed unclear why she chose to attempt to kick us out when there were so many other tables to choose from. There was an identical table next to us full of older women, so perhaps she felt that b/c we were younger she should choose to kick us out. Secondly we had received our drinks 5 minutes beforehand! Were we supposed to gulp them down and go on the off chance the group eventually arrived??? Finally, if the reservation was late, why were we being penalized??? Turns out the table next to us was ready to leave anyway, the server was just to moronic to notice that they had been trying to get their check the entire time she was harassing us.

I threw a party at Kemia and was bringing a big crowd. I called ahead of time to see if Kemia was what I wanted. The person on the phone said they could give me a table and guarantee no problems for my party as long as we got one bottle. I agreed to this but, when we got there, the "bottle lady" tells me that the bottle had to be more than 200$ which its ok, but you should not have told me that bottles range from 150 to 300 if you wont let me get the 150$. Then, in the middle of the night, when the bottle is gone and my party is buying drink after drink, shot after shot, she tells me that for this number of people I had to get ANOTHER bottle. When I said that that's not that the lady on the phone told me, she replied -she's the receptionist, I'm the bottle service person. well, get your story straight from the beging then! I refused to buy another bottle as, clearly, everyone in my party was spending more money buying their own drinks. Everyone had a great time, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Yesterday, August 5th, I went to Kemia to celebrate with some friends. We had called one week in advance to make reservations, and they accepted it without telling us anything particular about the place.

So, today we gathered some friends - 7 in total, all professionals with ages varying from 28 to 38. My first surprise was to find out that they could only sit us if we were going to order food. After some back and forth they agreed to sit us for drinks only, but we would need to move to the bar once they needed our table. We said ok, although not very happily.
The place must have around 10 tables. We were occupying two. 4 tables never had anyone sitting on them, for either drinks or food. Still the hostess kept coming and asking whether we were going to order food, because they would need the table, and blah blah blah. So we asked if we could order a bottle of champagne and have the table for us. She said yes! So we ordered the champagne.

When we ordered the champagne the hostess said they could only keep on serving us if someone gave her a credit card and ID. I have never heard about such thing before! Sometimes I willingly give my credit card, but only when I want to open a tab...but as a means of insurance, it was ridiculous!

Then, the bar got crowded and they could no longer serve us drinks. We needed to go to the bar and order directly. The explanation: they had a promoter visiting the place and they were only serving bottles to the tables!

So, from the moment we walked in to the moment we left, I felt mistreated. I think a restaurant should be able to deal with the fact that a table (which was booked by us) was only going to have drinks. If people are coming for dinner, they should have made reservations and guarantted a table - after all, it is New York City, Summer, on a Saturday night...

If I can avoid it, Kemia will never see my face again!

Definitely very romantic, and the drinks were fantastic, but the food left something to be desired. The candles and overall lighting were extremely pleasant, as were the servers (when you could get their attention .. bartenders seem to play waitress and maitre d as well). Great place to bring a first or fifieth date.

I was at a blazing party at this joint last night! That bartender can make some mean drinks! My friends and I were sucking down that sangria and my girl loved the lychee drinks he made. Fun music, good food and a solid time. I've lived in Hell's Kitchen for awhile and didnt even realize the place was there. Now that I know, I will be spreading the word and coming back!

I went to the first Gypsy Wednesday party that Kemia held last night for the theater community and had a ball! So many of my fellow Broadway performers attended. The drinks were amazing! (The sangria was sinfully delicious.) The special prices for the party were great too! Such a fun time! The bartender/manager, said that they want to try to make this a monthly event! Well, my friends and I vote a huge YES! And...FRENCHIE DAVIS was there too!

Pros: crowd, drinks (well priced), atmosphere (fun)

My boyfriend and I had a very nice time at Kemia. It was romantic with the low lights and soothing atmosphere. We enjoyed the drinks and tapas fully. Highly recommend.

I attended a friend's gathering at Kemia last night and had a lovely evening. The food was really tasty and I particularly enjoyed the blood orange/champagne drink. I was unaware of this place before, but now that I know I will most certainly return!

I can't believe this place has been there for almost a year and I just visited! My friend had a birthday party there and we all had the best time. The staff was lovely and service was great. The drink list was amazing and quite tasty. I think we probably tried every drink! I especially love Jimmy's (the bartender) new drink, the melon one. Fun music and atmosphere! Djamal, the owner, was quite accomodating. I will be back this weekend with more friends and am planning my birthday party there too!

The service in this restaurant was so poor that they ruined a special birthday get together. The waitress had a bad attitude from the moment we stepped in the door, and it went downhill from there... the manager was defensive and argumentative, rather than accomodating, when we attempted to voice our concerns... and the last straw was when they brought our cake out to the wrong table and they make NO effort to rectify the mishap...10 minutes went by before they finally gave us the cake...with no plates and no apology... i will never go back there!!

We arrived with four people and had a tough time getting served by a waitress who clearly didn't want to be there. The place itself was nicely decorated and comfortable, and we ordered a round of drinks and dessert.

The drinks were small but OK, but the berry dessert I ordered was very poor and I didn't even bother to finish it.

Later after a disagreement with the staff about the bill we were given, the manager was extremely unhelpful and quickly progressed to rude despite my attempts to steer the conversation back to the bill.

There are too many nice bars in the area, and personally I'd recommend giving this one a miss.

Pros: decor, seating

Cons: , unsatisfying drinks, very bland food

Went here on a Thursday and was very impressed with the decor and attentive staff. The drinks were yummy as well. But all that didnt compensate for the fact that the below-average-tasting-food was so ridiculously overpriced for such miniscule portions even for tapas. In addition, our server didn't have any idea what certain food items were made of. I think she should just find out by asking the cook instead of making things up and just repeating whats on the menu!

I had my husband's 30th b'day party at Kemia and thanks to Djamal and his lovely staff, it was a BLAST!! Everyone, esp my husband has the best time and he will surely remeber this b'day for a long, long time. The belly dancer that Djamal suggested was incredible too.
Cheers,
Dipali

Strange man waiting at the door on a Sat. night said he had to check to see if there was space before he let us in. When he escorted us downstairs we saw that there were plenty of available tables. Great place to hang out in the red, dimly-lit backdrop so long as you have a good crew. I don't think it would be as much fun w/ just 2 people since the setup is more loungey to accommodate larger groups. Each lounge/table set up is custom draped in red chiffon overlay. Good time was had by all although the crowd was a bit cheesy. I think K is a much better venue.

Drove in from Jersey with some girlfriends on Saturday. Very crowded, but we all had a great time. Those Kemia cocktails go down so smooth. :)
We will be back soon!

Kemia Bar is one of a kind. A romantic, sexy place in midtown with creative food that can be a bite or a meal. Love it! A great find!

The problem with Kemia is that it is too themed, it almost feels like the Moroccan Oasis at DisneyWorld (if they had one.) A lush basement space with rose petal covered floor is cool, the mezze are good and inexpensive, the low seating is comfy (once you settle in,) but all of it together is just too much. Perhaps if they played non-themed music, it'd be a more real place to have drinks, but right now it reminds me too much of the Fashion Cafe (RIP) and Hard Rock.
