I have been getting highlights for over 10 years and never had an experience like this---Carlina was the colorist and my hair came out white. I asked for natural highlight and it looked like peroxide was used. The Assistant put a brown

few years ago and how amazing it is. After going to Metodo Rossano Ferretti ( fantastic salon!) I decided to give Rita a try. After spending more the $600 I requested Rita to do my hair. To my expectations Rita excused herself as being "to busy" so I was ok with another stylist. After hair blower end up exploding in front of my face! I left salon with burned and bleached hair even tho I have allergies on bleach and clearly said not to bleach my hair!. Never again!.

I loved the color I got from Rita yesterday! I have gone through no less than 4 colorists in the last 6 months in an attempt to correct my brassy highlights. Discouraged, I decided to invest in Rita to correct my hair color. Within a few hours, she had made my hair color exactly what I wanted. Incredible!! So worth the investment!!!

Pros: Flawless!

I have gone to the Rita Hazan Salon twice now for cuts, seeing Eugene both times. The first cut was long layers that grew out perfectly -- the best cut I had gotten along these lines, and I've had long layers for a long time. The second cut was much shorter and I thought it was a bit of a risk. But Eugene understood exactly what I was going for and it turned out gorgeous! He cut it damp first, then had his assistant blow it dry, then he had me stand up to see how it looked that way and he trimmed it again. Then he flat-ironed it to see how the ends looked and he trimmed it AGAIN to make it just right. This man deserves an award. Never has anyone taken so much time to get a cut flawless, and it is SO flawless. Every time I look in the mirror, I think, "Now that is the best haircut I have ever had." My boyfriend loves it, my friends love it, I love it.

As for the atmosphere at Rita Hazan, it's just fine. People are friendly, they get you whatever you like to drink, and I found the vibe and decor to be pretty mellow, although a non-New Yorker might say different. It's a little art deco, if you care about such things. I never feel any pressure to buy any products or anything else. And it's always really fast, even with all the attention to detail. Great place!

Had a hair model appt there for highlights. I heard they had a great reputation etc. The first night someone called me within hours of the appt to tell me that class night had been cancelled. Okay, it happens, they scheduled me for the following week. The next week, again I get a call within hours of my appt cancelling. They told me someone had made the appt in error, I asked to speak to the manager (Erin) and she told me they were not willing to make any accomodations in view of their mistake. In the meantime, I turned down several offers from other salons for their color class nights. This was a total waste of my time and I will never schedule with this salon again.

I was in NYC on a short business trip that I chose to combine with pleasure and called 5 days prior to my arrival to get an appt. I was more than surprised to find that my colorist would be Rita Hazan herself! She had no reason to see me as I certainly wasn't a regular. Just a woman in search of great color. As I walked out of her salon I felt like I could have gone straight to a photo shoot. I have yet to have another colorist do as great a job. She is gracious and one would never know who she was if she didn't introduce herself . An absolutely fabulous New York experience.

Wow, I cant believe all of the negative stuff I am reading about the salon and most importantly about Rita herself.Rita started doing my hair when I was 18 years old and had seen her on an episode of newlyweds, and decided she needed to color my hair. I loved Jessica's amazing blonde and thought she was extremely talented. When I got to the salon in the old space, yes my first visit was a little bit nerve racking however I was met with this young girl who was under thirty standing there in a tshirt jeans and sneakers, no indication that she was THE RITA HAZAN herself except the gold rolex on her wrist, that is one of Rita's signatures. And if anyone knows her you love this about her, you dont think its unprofessional, this is a part of her personality that is great. She was nothing but gracious to me and and I remember leaving that day thinking what a remarkable person she was to be so young successful and have her own her own business, but most of all I couldnt believe how down to earth she was, that this now superstar colorist, treated me the same way she did Jessica Simpson.

Throughout the years, we have become friends and apart from doing my hair she has always made time to answer silly questions I send her on facebook about celebrity client's hair, new treatments they are having at the salon, recommendations for restaurants when we have gone to the same place for vacations. She encouraged me throughout my years during college and always pushed me to be a strong successful woman and reach for my dreams, as she did. I look up to her and admire her and I have gorgeous hair and highlights thanks to her which I am forever complemented on. Yes she is sometimes hard on her staff, but she is a perfectionist and most bosses are, you just dont see it.

I dont know where these reviews are coming from but I have been going to the Salon for five years and always love the look of my hair that both Rita and Eugene my stylist gives me. The thing I love most about Rita as someone previously mentioned is that she will never really say no your hair cant do that, as I am a brunette and always lusted after Jennifer Aniston's sunkissed Highlights, she just goes for it, shes not lazy she gets the job done! Its so refreshing to have someone just do it and not say ahh, your hair really cant go that light, although ocasionally she will say, honey we cant make your bleach blonde your skin's too olive.

Rita saved my hair. I went to two salons near my office that I'd never been to before and had two terrible highlight jobs in one week. (The second was supposed fix it but only made it worse). I went to Rita for a color correction for my over -bleached, blotchy hair. She was very sweet and made it all better. My hair looks great and feels great too. She is worth the money. Now I just need to find someone I like to cut my hair....

I have been seeing Rita since her last location. All I have to say is that she is always accommodating and willing to fit you into her schedule. The quality of the work is excellent. I've had color done at several high end salons and no place comes romotely close to Rita's. Her demeanor is professional. She communicates and works with you on the desired look. She's very suggestive and knows exactly what will work with your skin tone, hair, lifestyle.

Of course it is expensive (but not for the quality) but you don't need to be in her chair every month. She looks at the integrity of your hair and will not perform a service if your hair is damaged but will recommend a treatment, shampoo, conditioner, etc. until your hair is in ready condition to receive color.

Although she is one of the most in demand colorists, she definitely does not carry the attitude. She's serious about her work and wants to give you her best attention. Therefore, some reviews may perceive her personality as being rude, but far from it. :)

If you want a customized look, look no further.

These guys are last minute life savers! I'm from New Mexico and was in New York City for the most important interview of my life!!! My hair had been fired by to many coloring and flat ironing and all that stuff and it NEEDED to look good. I wanted extensions and to look like the girls from the hills. (Ya know, thick curls, tons of hair... etc) In under 2 hours, my hair went from short and fried to down my back long amazing curls!!! I also got a spray tan while I was there and it looked awesome not orange! I was amazed that they could do everything I wanted in such short notice. I wish I had before and after pictures it was a true makeover! Thank you guys soooooooo much! Life savers! xx

I thought citysearch was to help people make educated decisions about where to go.
It seems that there are very few helpful reviews for the Rita Hazan Salon (who really cares what Rita wears to work???) and that this is a place for some disgruntled ex employee to be nasty.

I just an appointment to see for myself. They were very helpful and kind on the phone, I'll keep you posted.

horrible service, Rita is the worst colorist ever! she does the same thing on every highlight client! she charges a ridiculous amount for ordinary color. never will i go back. had to wait so that Rita could get her hair and makeup done. she was wearing a baggy gym sweater with jeans that showed the stretch marks on her behind and nike tennis shoes. so unprofessional. she's also very rude to her staff. i don't see how this salon is going to last much longer-

Cons: RITA, salon, staff, pressure to buy products, stuffy atmosphere, and EVERYTHING ELSE

This is my all time favorite salon in the city. Being in the fashion industry I need to make sure I look my best at all times so a good salon is a necessary splurge. Some of the other high-end salons I've tried were kind of stuffy and uptight. (Which I'm sure some people like) However, I prefer the laid-back almost party-like atmosphere at this salon. I pay money for the fashion forward expertise, not the white glove attitude. I love that everyone in the salon is around my age. It makes it more fun because I feel they can relate to me more and I trust that my look will be kept modern.

My personal favs! are John for Color (he's the only one that can do my red right!!) and Josh for my cut and blowout. Go to Natasha for manicures, I've NEVER had a mani last this long. <3!

I recently had a baby and I loved what Rita did to J Lo's hair after she had hers so I begged my husband to let me go! Here is what I think, and I never go to NYC salons.
When i called to book the appointment I spoke to an absolutely lovely person who was super helpful. I explained that I could not afford Rita, so he took the time to talk me through it & made a referral. i think his name was Stass, super nice!!
i came in for my appointment & I was floored!! You expect NYC salons to be super pretentious and sterile but this was not the case. The front desk were smiling and acknowledged me right away. The manager Erin, was super sweet and offered a mimosa, which I thought was so cool!
I have to admit, once I was walked back I was a little intimidated for a second. It was a very busy saturday and Madonna was bumping. I felt like I was at a night club. Everyone around seemed so cool to me, being a new mom from the midwest it was pretty cool
I saw Adrian for color he made me feel totally at ease and really listened to what I wanted. He took the time to ask questions like how often will you be able to maintain this, do you wear your hair up alot, etc. He was so professional and genuinely interested in making me not only look my best, but in making it work for me. I still love the color.
After color was finished Adrian's assistant brought me over to Ryan for a blowdry. He was very funny and sweet. My blowdry lasted for a few days. All in all, it was not what i expected! Even just looking around the salon, the level of expertise is astounding. There is a totally cool NYC vibe and instead of making you feel like an outsider, they welcome you right in. Definitely see Adrian and Ryan! I absolutely love the Rita Hazan Salon and will be fan forever (even if my husband doesn't let me come back) :)

Do NOT recomend this salon AT ALL! I am very picky about my color and blonde is hard to maintain. I tried one of the stylist and he had no idea what he was doing. I brought it to his attention that the result was NOTHING like I explained or showed in a pic. He agreed and did it again. This time he BURNT my hair in the front and pieces broke off. I could sense something was wrong and they were covering it by ignoring the problem. I then went back to the head colorist and they put on a color which lasted 3 weeks and they said just keep coming back!!! Once again a nightmare experience in the city....

Sincereley Frustrated

Would not recommend this salon to anyone, NOT even my worst enemies!

Made an appointment at the nail salon and when I arrived they conveniently raised the price after the pricing was already confirmed over the phone. On top of that the nail tech seem to not have any knowledge as to what she was doing. So two thumbs down.

I absolutely hate the vibe of this salon but I trust Rita to hire professional colorists so I just deal with the scene. The price is moderate for single process color ($85 is cheapest) in Manhattan but that's without a blow-dry. Which, by the way I think is the biggest rip!! Why wouldn't you want to style your client and make them feel beautiful (and also check to see that the color looks right)? All that aside, the staff is friendly enough, in an "LA, I don't really care how you are but asking to be polite" kind of way. There is definitely cheaper salons out there but this salon uses really good product (shampoo and color) and the sceneyness of it keeps them on their toes for what's happening in the hair trend world.

I love and adore Carrie & Haruo!
Carrie was away and I saw Rita for my single.
You are right about having to wait, which I figured would happen.
You are right about the way she speaks to her staff. It made me cringe.
I know for sure, i am going to stick with Carrie! it was torture when rita called one girl to come on the floor to scream at her in front of everyone about the music. it made me feel even worse because i was really into the song! She said something like if you think this is a good song then you are retarded. it was only a janet jackson song or something. I always think the music is great, but I guess she always hates it. i like the salon, but probably wouldn't see rita again.

Hi,
For awhile the only person I saw here was Arsi for my waxing. I had read about her in Allure. She is a lovely person and very thorough. No frills and no pressure to buy products is what I love! Also, never an ingrown hair!!

I needed to go to my friends wedding and I normally have other services at other salons. they were kind enough to squeeze me in last minute for a style, makeup application and mani.

The stylist available was Eddie who I couldn't understand a great deal, but was very nice. He did a great blowdry with great loose curls. It was so hot out that day so he pinned it into an awesome messy up do. I liked it, it was not too contrived or over done which is my style. I will definitely consider seeing him again for a cut.

Next I saw Natasha for nails. She was a little quiet but it has been 6 days and my manicure still looks new! I liked how she also picked out a color for me. Normally I go to the place below my apartment for a mani and pedi for the price of her manicure but it was definitely the best manicure i have had in awhile!

Finally, the icing on the cake, was my makeup by Jordi. I have never felt so beautiful in my life! My eyes were amazing and my skin looked flawless.

All in all, I was impressed by the workmanship and quality. I didn't get any attitude. I thought the front desk was really nice. The only person I noticed an attitude from was the coat check girl. She was on her phone and looked bothered, but with all due respect, that will not deter me from going back again!

Pros: Jordy, Arsi, Natsha and Eddie

Cons: Haven't really noticed any yet but the AC can be pretty cold so bring a sweater

Ive never written a review, bad or good about any business but had to comment on my experience at the Rita Hazan "salon". I have been going to same colorist at Oscar Blandi but she recently went on maturnity leave and I was recommended to go to Rita. First off Rita was 30 minutes late. That would have been acceptable if she was busy and backed up. Not acceptable when she is getting her hair curled and just talking away. The ironic thing about that was I overheard her complaining about someone being 15 minutes to see her. Talk about glass houses! The color is okay but definitely nothing earth shaking...the highlights seem a little too chunky, and some of them dripped onto non-highlighted hair. BUT even if the color was amazing I would never return because of her attitude. I dont think I have met a more self absorbed colorist before!!!! Its haircolor- not surgery! She seemed very busy so I guess her personality (or the lack thereof) seems to be a non-issue to most. But if you want great color from a personable colorist go to someone else or another salon. If this salon is about decent color then they are spot on. Great color and fantastic customer service? completely lacking.

Badbetty's review is on point. I also saw Rita getting makeup while clients were waiting. I am posting because I searched online for reviews to let women know the scam that is Rita Hazan Salon. Badgirl posted that the staff lists posts here and she is right. When I was there one day, they were on this site looking at reviews and posting them. The last post about Jennifer Lopez is just a bold lie by an employee. Ms. Lopez hasn't been a client of Rita's since she was at her 65th St location. There is never a celebrity sighting since they moved from the townhouse to the tourist trap on 56th St. All of the regular clients are gone and so are the celebrities they claim to work with(except Jessica Simpson who is barely a celebrity). Their staff is arrogant and rude. I would sit with a stylist and they would talk about other stylists work under their breath saying the work came out tacky, unfinished, and more. They also make you wait to be seen sometimes even if they don't have a client, just to make you wait. I had good color by Rita but there are many other colorists available. In regards to the pricing, I am ok with it since it is comprable for other experienced colorists in Manhattan, if price was your complaint, you should have never went. I have moved on!

I never really write reviews, but I was compelled to today. I don't see Rita, so this is coming from a completely different perspective. Who in their right mind finds a celebrity colorist from a magazine or TV show, then books an appointment with them without asking the price and then complains that the person was too busy, or doing their makeup or that they charged too much or they only cared about the celeb that was there????? When I first called the salon I never even asked to see Rita! I asked for their recomendation. That's like going to Gucci and complaing that you can buy the same wallet at Target for $5. Your paying for status, for a label when you see someone like Rita. Of course she is going to be expensive! I mean come on, If you can't afford her, don't see her. I go to the salon and see Carrie for color. She is young, fresh, and is very talented. Her pricing is reasonable for the city and her work is consistent. I also have seen Sean James and Haruo who are each amazing. Really friendly, personable and both have done a consistent job whether it is a cut or style. Also Arsi has done waxing once and I swear that woman does not have a bad bone in her body. I encourage people to think before they decide to see someone. Don't just trash their name because you weren't happy, go to someone that will make you happy! I personally love Carrie, Sean, Haruo and Arsi. I love to watch the celebrities (I was there when Jennifer Lopez was! Very exciting) I love the action. I love the front desk, they are so nice and hysterical!

I was a client of Rita's for three years and left recently. Why have I moved on? Their service is terrible and their pricing is inconsistent. Do not trust the super positive five star reviews, Anna and Josh posted them! I always liked the color Rita did until three months ago. She was more interested in having her makeup done while we waited, same as another reviewer said. The color was uneven and she had to fix it because the color was off even though she did the same color on me every month. There are always clients who get the color redone when the drying starts because it wasn't what they wanted. Rita is capable of being a great colorist but because of her arrogance, she insists she is right about what looks best on someone even though it turned out like garbage. I have seen them compliment someone over and over even though it looked horrible, she then went to pay and the receptionist asked if she had an appointment, it looked that bad. They don't care about having a regular client base, they thrive off selling to tourists that saw her on Oprah and through PR about Jessica Simpson. Visitors to NY, be careful, they will sell you on every service because they know they can. They also raise prices when they choose, if you go there, make sure you remember what you paid before. Their stylists are amaturish and will drop celebrity names to make their work seem better than it is. Do not waste your money on hype and fake reviews. Also, to the long time client who reviewed below, Joaquin hasn't worked there for almost a year so why are you even mentioning him? He was one of their worst stylists and only wanted to do celebrity hair.

I'm a freelance makeup artist who works out of the Rita Hazan Salon. I was hurt by BadBettie's review. I know
. when Rita is quiet, she is thinking about correcting hair color. Quiet can seem to be unfriendly. Color correction is a difficult process and she is only trying to give that her full attention. I also do Rita's makeup quit often. We have fun at the salon and try to inspire the clients. I might be the guilty one who was doing the makeup. We both love makeup and hair color.it goes hand- in -hand . Sorry you had such a bad experience and I have taken your critisim to heart since I may have been involved.

This was a catastrophe in every aspect. Rita isn't friendly at all, I had to sit and wait with other clients while she got her make-up done, and after waiting she wasn't apolagetic at all. She doesn't seem to care about you if you are not an "important person" and she yells at her her staff and talks to them very condescendingly. I was shocked and appalled! The color looked good but nothing spectactular...never again!

So I was surprised to not see Carrie or Eddie mentioned at all in the reviews!
If you have a problem with Rita but want her talent, see Carrie. Carrie was trained by Rita and does an amazing job! She is very down to earth and sweet. At Carrie's suggestion I tried Eddie for a cut. He is kind of quiet but I really liked him and his assistant Mune! I liked how he has more of a downtown vibe. I hate hair that is too over done so I was pleasnatly surprised!
If you want quality, without having to worry about attitudes, they are your best bet!

I found out about the training classes via this site and decided to try it out for some highlights. At only $60, what did I have to lose? I read the reviews on this site and became increasingly wary of the salon, but it turns out my fears were unfounded. The reception staff were not exactly effusive, but certainly not rude or intimidating (maybe because I had resolved earlier in the day to overload them with kindness if they were unpleasant). I checked my jacket and bag and changed into one of the horribly unflattering polyester robes, which turned out to be of little use in protecting my white shirt from hair dye stains. It was a bit of a cattle call environment, with the clients being shuffled from a waiting area to a corner where the class is conducted. It wasn't the most professional, but I expected that. The man who taught the class seemed competent. He did not address me directly once until the end of the session. He seemed pretty abrupt and was on his phone the whole time, which irritated me. Overall the experience wasn't exactly luxurious. Megan, my stylist, did a great job with the color (a medium brown base with caramel highlights, nothing too adventurous). She did manage to get about a gallon of water down my back while rinsing me, and had a habit of randomly leaving me at the washbowl with no explanation as to why I had to wait there. I would still strongly recommend her to my friends- I'm thrilled with my color and think she's very talented.

Cons: unprofessional staff at times, shoved into some faraway corner like a Biblical leper

I read the reviews on Citysearch about this place so I thought I would give it a try and it was one of the worst airbrush tans I've ever gotten. Anna sprayed me with a clear spray and the next day I had a big patch of skin that didn't have any color on it. The color didn't look very natural and for the amount of money I paid it should have looked much better than this. I had better expectations than this, but I guess I will have to keep on searching for the right place.

My hair was absolutely ruined at Salon AKS by their colorist named J.Antony and in desperation I went to the experts at Rita Hazan. I wish this had been my first stop! A colorist named John restored the wreck that the other man created. My hair went from green to gorgeous when John removed the green and ash roots that AKS charged me a couple hundred bucks for. Thank you so much John, you created a beautiful strawberry blonde with light blonde highlights. I feel good again! I'm now going to continue seeing John and try the stylist he suggested for my next hair cut!

I've been Rita's client for years - first at her old salon, now at her new one - and I've never written her a review, and given the mixed ones here, I thought I would contribute my perspective.

Rita's color is truly amazing. Even your mere base adjustment comes out sparkly, with dimension unlike anyone else's color. Add in the highlights and it's truly movie star hair. She changes my color a little every time - there is nothing she cannot do, and she will never tell you that cop out excuse, "Uh, let's work toward that" like others will - and I find she does the most amazing things when I just let her do whatever she's envisioning. I'm very controlling, so it's taken me a long time to trust anyone like that, but with Rita, I always adore it. Frankly, walking down the street, no one's hair is as pretty as mine.

This said, whoever said it was a factory is right. Rita will do numerous clients at one time and you can't be in a rush. Once you get to know her, she's fabulous, but keep in mind she's extraordinarily successful as an entrepreneur and along with that amazing success comes a bit of a diva attitude. I love this about Rita, but it means you aren't going to have someone fawning all over you and making you feel like her one and only, most important client. But frankly, why expect that? Just be polite and respectful and give her a little artistic license (after you show her some pictures of what you want) and I think you'll find she warms up. She's not a super smiley, warm and fuzzy person though.

Other cons are that she is extremely expensive, and sometimes the color fades a little. They are also extremely commercial, so you may feel pressure to get a dry or a haircut. In terms of stylists, Joaquin (pronounced wah-KEEN) and Sean are truly amazing for drys and cuts - really, again, movie star quality, hair - but Joaqin has major attitude some days so you have to deal with that. Sean is a total sweetheart and he's amazing.

I swear by Anna, she does the best spray tan in New York, You dont feel uncomfortable, she makes you laugh. I am very fair skinned of Mediterranean descent and have yet to meet someone that hasn't thought this was my natural skin color. The end result with Anna is a beautiful bronze.
I would follow her anywhere to any salon.I hope she starts doing house calls!!!!

I have to admit ,while reading other reviews I cant help but think the bad reviews were written by women who have some alterior motive . I have been a client of Rita's for a very long time(years) and have changed my color constantly. Every single time the color was gorgeous whether it was a dark warm rich brown or a blonde so believable and bright I would be stopped by strangers for my secret . All the while Rita who is extremely busy with her celebrity client list finds time almost immediately for my noncelebrity self. I am always greeted by her warm unpretensious staff and taken promptly. I have just newly become a client of Anna, who is very personable, detail oriented and applies self tanner with the precision of a surgeon. I am quite fair and leave 20 min later with a tan so natural..no streaks..no orange..no sloppy hands and feet..just a seamless all around perfect tan.. Rita's salon is a beauty must have...

My colorist was John. I asked for strawberry blonde highlights and I came out with Julianne Moore's dark red hair color - all over! I am still not sure how my NATURAL base color (which is blonde) changed when I asked for highlights. The one book I was shown did not feature strawberry blonde as an option (I should have left then). John seems to only know to do blonde highlights - I felt like I was at Dramatics (which probably would have been better). Over-hyped, over-priced and disappointing. Plus, their phone greeting hasn't been change since last September. They apparently are still closed for the Jewish holidays. SLOPPY.

I thought I would give this place a try since seeing Rita Hazan on Oprah. Her salon is very nice but certain people on her staff have major attitude and don't make you feel comfortable at all. I got the full body spray tan with Anna. She was very quiet and when I tried to make small talk with her she just gave me one word responses (I guess she was having a bad day). I told her I just wanted a healthy looking glow and when I got done I looked so dark that I almost started crying. I told her I was too dark and she said it looked really good. She said it would fade after a few days. I didn't want it to be that dark and wait for it to fade after a few days. On top of that - I had to spend $100 to get this done. When my friends saw me - they could tell I was unhappy and they commented on how fake it looked. It was very unnatural - i looked like a big orange. What a horrible experience. I will not be going back there.

I recently had color with "the Rita Hazan" herself and besides just being rough around the edges she was rude, sloppy and dis-interested! The salon itself is a bit romper room-ish. It is also filled with clients and more so STAFF that thrive on feeling like they themselves are celebrities. The color was nothing to write home about especially after seeing three other clients' color come out looking exactly like mine.

After experiencing a traumatizing hair cut somewhere else i decided i would splurge on my hair go to a nice fancy salon and get my hair done by a pro ! from the moment I walked in I was greeted very nicely the girls at the reception area were really welcoming then i had my coat checked in and i was thinking this place isn't that big until I walked to the back of the salon !! the salon let me just say is very very nice. i was introduced to my stylist Eugine and felt a bit nervous until he began to touch my hair he has MAGIC fingers !!! what that man did to my hair was AMAZING. his assistant Suzanna was also very nice. never was i treated so nicely with so much professionalism and that warm welcoming feeling the Rita Hazan salon gave me. I am defiantly a new client of the salon and of Eugine !! After reading some of the reviews on this page about how bad the salon is I just don't think they went to the same salon i went to because that was defiantly not what i saw and experienced that day.

This is no ordinary Hair experience.
Go to the "Rita Hazan Salon" only if you can Handle Looking fabulous !!!

Pros: Best Color and Cut Ever

.

"no attitude," and "unpretentious" are two words I wouldn't use to describe the Salon. I think Rita is probably the only colorist who fits that description and is worth seeing. Adrienne (colorist) was ok until one time when he did my hair, my whole head came out completely brassy and was damaged (fried and brittle) beyond repair. He didn't seem to care and suggested it might have been some medication I had taken. He didn't offer to condition it, apologize or anything - he couldn't be bothered. I once saw Deborah (colorist), a primadonna who couldn't not have been more aloof.
When I told her that I had wanted more highlights, she became so defensive, you would think I accused her of some horrible crime. She put in more foils and left for the day, without checking the color.

As I mentioned, Rita is a pleasure and very talented. If you can't afford her I wouldn't recommend this place.

This was my first time ever going to Rita Hazan Salon. I had seen a makeover show on Oprah and decided I wanted to go check it out. I get there and JOHN (colorist) takes the time to speak with me and show me books and really get a feel for the kind of color I wanted for my hair. A colorist who cared about what I wanted--YES! So we agree on a color plan and his magic fingers go to work! My color comes out FABULOUS!!!!

I already feel like a celebrity and then JOSH (stylist) gives me the same awesome VIP treatment. He talks to me, listens to me, makes his suggestions, listens to my suggestions and then BAM! His magic fingers go to work. So after I get colored and styled, I secretly get a little anxious about the blowdrying part because my hair is quite curly and I am thinking it might turn out poofy? Not a chance! I was SO happy to see how JOSH handled my styling to bring my new look together. My hair came out silky, straight and soft.

I was so excited that I kept my eyes closed and avoided mirrors during the whole process. When JOSH was done, he and JOHN (who, by the way, actually waited to see how my hair color turned out once dryed) walked me over to the makeup mirror and said "open your eyes." I SCREAMED WITH JOY! Not to brag, but I looked and felt stunning. Never before had my hair come out SO awesome at a salon. My highlights looked blonde like I wanted them to and did not have the typical brassy or orangy tones you get at other places.

I will never go anyplace else! I walked out of there with a stack of business cards and brochures for all my friends. Two words: JOSH & JOHN!

worth all the hype. My color has never looked better. Rita is a color genius!!!!!!!!!!!!! especially with Blonde hair. I have spent less money at other salons but have NEVER BEEN THIS HAPPY. I read the other reviews and have to say that Rita was very nice but very busy and maybe that is why people thought in the other reviews that she was not that friendly. Bottom line if you want your hair to look great this is the place to go

OKAY so I come in to get some highlights and maybe a few lowlights for a slight change for fall a more warm rich deeper color than my beachy summer look! I waited over 45 min to see my clorist Carrie she seemed nice but I didn't get a comfortable assured feeling with her , when I was describing what I wanted she just seemed to say okay with a blank spacey stare. When she begain my color I found it werid how she was doing my lowlights it was if she was coloring my whole head, at that time I felt guilty for straying from my awsome colorist who works at Freddrick Fekkai. When she washed me out and they sent to an assistant do blowout my hair which was another 50$ (btw) and had know clue how to blowout clury hair I started to see the color and I wanted to cry it was so awful too dark and very generic looking totally opposite of what I described so disapointed. I explained to her it was not what I wanted and was very dissapointed she told me to live with it for a few days and come back for a few highlights if I wanted to lighten it up ! Ugh Now what to do ??? Go back to the same person who screwed me up ? Well I decided okay everyone deserves a second chance she did the fixing no charge but stll didn't get it right she lightend it up almost to the point wher my bangs which our very fine baby hairs are breaking off !!! I have learned my lesson I will never try a new salon again it was a BIG MISTAKE... the decor was okay and yeah music was good but who cares about that I went there for hair !!! The stylist looked like they were trying to be trendy but mis the mark they looked average and sloppy I preffered the assistants look which was all black it looked very professional.I regret ever going there and besides I now have to live with this awful cheesy color now until my hair is healthy enough to color again !!! NEVER AGAIN ...

Pros: the assistants were very nice

Cons: everything else

I saw a great review on Carlos haircut and decided to try him. Stupid me, because what was good enough for the gal that wrote that great review about him turns a great disappointment for me. Carlos is a nice person; however, that is not qualifying him for the "man that does the magic". His haircut was below average and I end up looking like rest of the crowed.
In my opinion, Carlos has no extraordinary talents since he is capable pulling off only convenient haircuts. Safe, sort to say, that will make you blend in with many other women in the streets. Therefore, if you want a haircut that will turn many heads CARLOS ISN?T YOUR GUY. Try somebody else. Overall, I will not recommend this person to my friends. Recommendation to Carlos: Honey, improve your skills or do something else!

Pros: good service

Cons: if the haircut is below average , so who cares of the service ?

I had read a lot about Rita and wanted to test it out. I wasnt able to really afford her though being that its hard enough to make rent in this city! But I called up and spoke with a very friendly and helpful receptionist who instructed me that for my price range I could see another colorist who was trained by Rita. I went to see Carrie at the salon and from the minute I walked in the place I felt so comfortable and relaxed. Everyone is so sweet and hands down the best color I have ever had!!! I also was able to watch the color guru herself, color other clients. Anyone who is looking for a no-drama salon that does WONDERS, this is it!

It's not like me to write a bad review. In fact, I just wrote a wonderful review of another salon I went to...after this one. The experiences were so vastly different. I had read about Rita's salon and saved my money to go there. I found her rude, cold and even a bit insulting ("You have a lot of gray hair. I'm sure you were coloring it before, though"). The staff barely talked to me and I felt that they thought I looked like I couldn't afford to be a regular customer so why bother being friendly. Listen, for good service and results, I will spend the money. Rita was getting her hair done by one of her stylists right next to me and only talked to him about parties, people they knew in common, etc. Then, she came over, gave me a few highlights after my base color which although well-placed, were ashy and unflattering to my skin tone. Then she charged me $600. No one offered me coffee or water. No one asked if I wanted a magazine. When I paid my money, she took it without even a smile. I do not need special pampering as part of a salon experience and I definitely understand when a salon is slammed with clients, but I felt particularly ignored, ill-treated and worst of all ripped off because the results were so unsatisfactory. Luckily, I've found another place for half the price with wonderful talented people who listen and pride themselves on good service and building repeat clientele.

Even though Rita Hazan Salon is known for coloring hair they have the best Airbrush Tanning in NYC. Anna does such an amazing job that people dont beleive its a spray tan. Its lasts long and Anna pays particuliar attention to making sure your fingernails and toenails do not turn orange. I highly recommed paying a visit to this the salon.

I liked it! The salon was beautiful and fun! The music was upbeat, there was a great energy and everyone was having a blast. Not for anyone looking for a mellow spa experience. Great for a "girls day" or getting ready for a big night out.
Front desk was alot more nice then other NYC salons. Very friendly and accomodating.
Loved the spray tan by Anna. The complementary massage was amazing!
Color by Adrian was beautiful. Since I am not from NYC, they even gave me my formula to do a touch up at home!
All in all I left feeling like a star and ready to go out! I can't wait to go back with my girls!
